NOTE: I am proud to say that this is my last chapter and I have finished my season 4 fanfic for Nikita! Wow I've been working on this for a long time and it is my longest fic. It was my goal to complete it and I feel good about the outcome. (The ending may be a little mushy but I like romance ;)) Thanks soo much for everyone who read and everyone who have given me feedback. It was much appreciated! I hope you enjoy this last chapter.
Time to Live
Everyone left the White House and stood by their SUV.
"Where...should we go?" Sonya asked.
"I have an idea," a mischievous smile appeared across Birkhoff's face. "We should celebrate!" he lifted his arms up in the air. "Yeah let's go have some drinks people loosen up it's on me."
Ryan shrugged and smiled. "I'm in."
"I am too," Owen smirked.
"Alright let's go!" Alex said.
THE BORGATA, ATLANTIC CITY, NJ
Nikita and Alex and Sonya sat at the bar and watched Birkhoff, Owen, Michael and Ryan try to win money playing various games in the casino. Nikita took a sip of her martini as she watched Michael grit his teeth when he lost in a poker game. Owen was smiling and teasing him; he must have won. Birkhoff shouted and high-fived Owen.
"I don't know what I'm going to do with him," Sonya said jokingly.
"What do you and Birkhoff plan to do?" Alex asked Sonya.
"I honestly don't know, but I would really like to travel the world. Go home to London...I haven't been there in five years."
"Do you have family there?" Nikita asked. Sonya nodded.
"That'll be an interesting reunion. Then, I want to travel all around Europe and then maybe Seymour and I can settle down somewhere."
"That'll be nice," Alex smiled.
"What about you and Owen?" Nikita asked. Alex stopped drinking her soda and almost choked.
"What do you mean?"
"Oh I know," Nikita smirked at her. "I saw you two together."
"I didn't tell you because-"
"You don't have to explain yourself. I get it. We had too much going on. You didn't feel that it was the right time."
Alex nodded. Nikita knew her too well.
"I think you two are cute together," Sonya smiled.
"Thanks Sonya," Alex laughed embarrassed. "I don't know what we are going to do. We haven't really talked about it. Honestly, he is still dealing with his own demons. Being confused about his identity and all..."
"Mm. What do you want to do?" Alex sat and thought.
"I don't know..."
"Think about...things you need to do for yourself to move forward." Alex sat and thought for a moment. To move forward... Then, she remembered.
"So, Michael, are you and Nikita finally going to have that dream wedding I know you've been planning?" Birkhoff said with a smirk.
"Hopefully."
"Where are you going to have it?"
"We've been talking about visiting Brazil."
"Brazil?" Owen asked.
"I want it to feel like we are in paradise. Free from everything."
"It'll be perfect. She'll love it," Ryan smiled. Michael glanced over at her and saw her smiling at him.
Alex lay next to Owen in their hotel room overlooking the ocean. Alex lay on her side and stared out the window. Owen had been reading the newspaper documenting their journey to freedom. It seemed that everyone still had questions about who they were and how exactly they knew how to find the president, yet they had nothing to worry about. Whether or not it was a good thing, the United States government was good at covering up secrets. Owen set the paper down on his end table and turned over to wrap his arms around her.
"We need to decide where we are going to stay," Owen said.
"Yeah..."
"I still do have my apartment in Montreal, but ill let you decide."
Think about things you need to do for yourself to move forward...
"Before we do anything, there are two things I want to do. One I want you to do with me, the other I would like to do alone," she told him. He knew that she didn't want to go into details and that she would tell him later.
"Whatever you want, I'll be here," he smiled and kissed her. She smiled and closed her eyes yet felt a pang of guilt. Sean had been running through her mind since she stood on stage with her friends and received their pardons. Sean had to die as a traitor. If he were alive, he would have been able to tell the truth and live his life freely with the rest of them.
The next morning Alex met Nikita for breakfast.
"So, did you and Owen talk about what you want to do?" Nikita asked.
"I want to visit Sean..." Alex said without making eye contact almost feeling guilty that she didn't tell Owen. Nikita knew that after some thought, ALex would come to that conclusion. She needed to let go of what happened in the past and forgive herself. Nikita took a sip of her orange juice and looked at Alex.
"Where were you going to do that?"
"The last place I saw him was Divison. I can go as far as the barn." Nikita never told Alex what she did after Sean died. By then, Alex had run off angry at herself and what she had done to her friends. Nikita decided to do what Alex wasn't capable of at the time and had been looking for the right time to tell her.
"Alex, I never knew how or when a good time would be to tell you this but... when Sean died...we had him cremated and then I asked some of the Division agents who were left to bury his urn with his mother. I figured that is where he'd want to be." Alex had tears in her eyes surprised and thankful. Without a word, she stood up and hugged Nikita. Nikita smiled, she was happy she could put Alex at ease even if it were only for a little.
Alex drove to the grave site and remembered exactly where Madeline Pierce was buried. She had visited with Sean before and watched him cry once she finally convinced him to let it out. It was hard to watch, but he needed to heal. She walked up to the grave and stood staring at Madeline Piece written on the stone. He'd never be properly buried or get the recognition he needed. He was given a fake death and fake grave so that he could start his life over in Division. She knew that grave meant nothing, just like hers. She stood over it and let out "Hey Sean." Her heart felt heavy and she knelt in front of the grave.
"Oh-" Owen was happy to see Nikita walking to the hallway back to her room. When he woke up, Alex wasn't there. She didn't answer when he called. "Where's Alex?" Owen asked.
"She had to go take care of something. She'll be back." Owen puckered his eyebrows confused by her vague answer.
"Where'd she go?" Then he remembered what she had said the night before. She had to do something alone. Pierce... Owen felt a pit in his gut, a heaviness on his shoulders weighing him down. Nikita knew that Owen had it figured out as she watched his face twist into sadness. She got close to him and grabbed his hand.
"Owen...she loved him like you loved Emily. She wants to be with you. In order for her to do that...she has to let go." Owen avoided her eye contact and gave her a quick nod before walking to the elevators.
Alex sat staring down at the grave with buried eye sight. She tried her best to keep the tears in.
"We made it. We beat Amanda. It feels strange to say that. She's been such a huge thorn in our side that without her we are all wondering what to do. None of us know how to start our lives over. I'm going to go visit mama and I'm taking...there's something I want to tell you. I tell you this because I care about you and would never want to hurt you. Although, that is exactly what I did and I don't know if I can forgive myself for it. It was my fault. I am taking Sam with me to visit mama, because we are together...taking it slow. I'm still trying to move forward with my life, but I think about you everyday. I feel guilty because I wonder if you were still here, would it be us celebrating this victory and starting our lives together. It is funny how life works. You never know what to expect. My whole life has been a struggle. But maybe if what my papa said about the butterfly is right, maybe we do get a second chance at life. If so, you are living it right now, it must be nice. I'm going to try to start my life fresh instead of dwelling in the past. Wish me luck. I think I'll need it," she smiled and stood up.
She looked at the grave one last time. She knew it would be her last visit. Then, she she kissed her fingers and placed them on the grave. She turned around and walked back to her car without looking back.
Alex went back to the hotel and made her way to the room she shared with Owen. She hadn't called him or let him know where she was going and she knew she'd have to face him. She walked into the room and it was empty. She sighed, relieved that she wouldn't have to explain herself just yet. Yet, her relief was short lived when she heard the door open. He paused with a huff and stood there expecting her to say something. She was trying to figure out a way to tell him.
"I'm glad you're okay," he said. She bit her lip. She felt guilty disappearing without telling him.
"I was going to tell you but..."
"You had to close one door to open the next...I get it. But I wish you could've trusted me with that, Alex."
"And what would you have said if I told you that I was going to visit Sean's grave?"
"I would have said 'I'm happy." he walked up to her. "You needed that."
"Now...I need you," she walked closer to him. "I want us to start our lives together."
"I want the same." she smiled.
"And I want you to go with me to see my mom."
"That's what you were talking about last night." she nodded. "Of course."
she leaned in to kiss him. She was still scared, unsure, and nervous about what the future may hold. She no longer had to fight. None of them did. It was an amazing feeling.
ONE MONTH LATER...
"Nikita, do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?" the wedding officiant said to Nikita. She stared up at Michael in her yellow strapless dress and pink flower tucked behind her ear. The all stood in the sand along the Prainha beach in Brazil. It had been a hot day and the sun had begun to lower leaving the sky a deep orange and magenta. Michael and Nikita had managed to get the team together and they all stood together watching and smiling along with a group of curious onlookers.
"With all my heart," she smiled.
"Michael, do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"
"Most definitely," he smiled back in a white button up and tan slacks.
"With the power vested in me, I know pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride." Nikita didn't wait for Michael. She threw her arms around his neck and pulled him into a kiss. Everyone cheered and clapped. We made it, Nikita thought. Finally.
Everyone swarmed Nikita and Michael giving them hugs and wishes. Nikita gave Ryan a long hug. She missed him.
"I'm so happy for you," he said to her.
"Thank you. How's everything with the CIA? You must be happy to be working there again. Especially since they promoted to work alongside Avet."
"It's truly a blessing. I've been working hard trying to catch the mastermind behind the Shop. We're getting close."
"I'm glad." Birkhoff came up behind her and she turned around.
"Niki, congratulations!" He gave her a hug. "I'm so happy that you and Mikey can finally be together."
"Thanks Nerd," she smiled and placed her hand on his cheek.
"And you look stunning, Nikita," added Sonya as she grabbed Nikita's hand. Nikita immediately noticed the diamond ring on Sonya's hand.
"Sonya...is that-" Birkhoff smiled and put his hand around Sonya's waist.
"Yes, we are engaged." Nikita let out a yell, clapped her hands, and hugged both of them. Michael, Alex, and Owen walked over and learned the news.
"That's amazing! Congratulations!" Alex said. "We'll have to come visit." she held Owen's hand.
"Yeah D.C. has been a little hectic. It'd be nice to see London."
"We'd love to have the diplomat Alexandra Udinov to come crash," Birkhoff teased.
"As long as her bodyguard can tag along," Owen added.
"Turns out he is the only person I can trust to protect me," Alex smiled.
"Hey!" Birkhoff said walking over to everyone with a bottle of champagne. "Let's have a toast, shall we?"
"Thanks for bringing champagne Nerd," Nikita smiled.
"It was my idea," Sonya whispered to her with a smirk.
They all stood in a circle and held up their glasses.
"I would just like to say that I am glad that you all were able to make it here. I know it is far from home for everyone," Michael said. "I also want to say that I am proud to be friends with all of you. We have been through a lot together. I also want to say that I cannot wait to spend my life with this woman. She'd strong and intelligent. She's the only person I'd die for and I love her." Nikita kissed him then stepped forward.
"Wow. I never thought for a moment that I would have such amazing people in my life. Before I met any of you I never thought I'd be someone that could make a difference. It is amazing how much we have all accomplished. We have survived a lot and have lost some along the way." she looked over at Alex and smiled. "But we won the battle and don't have to live fear what exists beyond Division walls. We can embrace it. And that is what I want to do with you." She looked up at Michael. "I'm glad I have you to show me what happiness is. Let's celebrate us, our family and the start of our own freedom."
Everyone shouted and raised their glasses higher. They drank their champagne and left their glasses in the sand. Nikita looked up at Michael.
"I know I said I wasn't sure..."
"About what?" Michael asked.
"Having children." Michael leaned in.
"Do you want to talk about this now?"
"I'm just scared, but...I trust you and I love you. I want us to have a family. I want to see what that 'boring' life can be like," she gave him a playful smirk.
"Boring with you? I doubt it." He smiled back.
"Race you to the water?" She had already kicked off her heels. Michael darted towards the ocean without warning but Nikita was quick to follow after. Her dress caught the water and slowed her speed. He turned around and she splashed him with water. Michael pulled her to him and hugged her into his arms. And in that moment she felt safe. She felt home. She felt like she could live.
