Chapter 17
Well, I'm going home,
to the place where I belong
And where your love has always been enough for me
I'm not running from,
no, I think you got me all wrong
I don't regret this life I chose for me
Home - Daughtry
Hmm, no reviews for the last chapter. I thought I would have gotten a better response to what happened. Oh well.
Here it is, the final chapter of Wanted. I'm so thankful for all of you who have read this story. I loved writing it for you. There will be an epilogue, so that is something you can all look forward to. Also, let me know if you are interested in a sequel. I have an idea of where to go, but if no one is going to read it, I won't bother.
It took entirely too long for April to arrive. Hannah didn't have to put up with Lexi anymore. She hadn't slept in their room for weeks which made Hannah very happy. She didn't need the extra drama. Hannah was done with that.
All of her belongings were packed and ready to go. She only packed the necessities, objects she didn't need, she sold them for some extra cash. She made a decent amount. Something Hannah would need if she was going to start off from scratch. The process was going to be hard, but Hannah could manage. It was going to be difficult though, starting completely over. She would know no one. She was going to be completely alone. Aleaha was upset when she told her the news. Lucy was in tears when she heard that her "Auntie Han" was going far away. Hannah was going to miss them; there was no doubt about it.
The plane was scheduled to leave at eight o'clock that evening. That gave her five hours. There was no use waiting around the campus, all she had to do was say goodbye to one more person and she would be gone. This was going to be the hardest goodbye.
"Devon, are you busy?" Hannah knocked on the door. "Devon, I need to talk to you."
"Hannah, come in," he opened the door, smiling. "Don't worry he's not here. He went to go visit his mom back home."
"Oh," Hannah said. "Ok, I just wanted to catch you before I left and say goodbye."
"Goodbye? You're leaving?" he asked. "Where are you going?"
"I'm leaving, Devon. I'm going out to California."
"Why?"
"I need to start over, Devon. I can't stay here anymore," Hannah answered. "I need to get out of here."
"If that's what you want, then I won't stand in your way. I have your back no matter what. You know that," he said. "Did you tell Reid yet?"
"I haven't talked to him in weeks," Hannah replied. "How is he?"
"He's a mess. I'm not going to lie," Devon explained. "I've never seen the guy cry before."
"He's been crying?"
"Almost every night."
Damn, she never wanted that to happen. He must have really cared. Not just for her, but for the thought of the baby too.
After a few more minutes and a few more hugs, Hannah said goodbye for the final time. She didn't want to say it to him. He had been there for her through everything. She didn't want to give that up. They were the best of friends, but he had let her move on without a fight.
"Mom, I don't know what to do," Reid rested his head on the counter top. "I tried everything I could think of and nothing worked to get her back. Then there were all of these rumors going around-"
"What were the rumors about?" Meredith asked, mixing up something for dinner on the stove.
"She ugh- there was a pregnancy scare and word went around." Reid told her.
"Reid Garwin! I thought I raised you better than that!" Meredith swatted him with the spatula.
"Well, it turned out she wasn't pregnant."
"Why do you sound disappointed?" she asked. "Reid, are you saying-"
"I was going to ask her to marry me after graduation," he said. "She means everything to me, mom. I don't know what to do anymore."
"Oh, sweetheart. I'm sorry, but you will figure something out-oh seems to be important," Meredith watched her son pick up his cell phone. The discussion soon got heated. "Is everything all right, dear?"
"Hannah's leaving. She's moving to California," he exclaimed, gripping at his hair. "That's it, Mom. It's over. I lost. I lost her. I lost everything."
"Don't give up, Reid. When does she leave?"
"Devon said her flight is at eight. It's six already, there's no way I'll be able to make it to the airport in time," he sighed. "She's leaving me."
"Then stop her," his mother answered simply. "Tell her everything. Don't let her leave. I've never seen you this happy. I don't want you to lose the one thing that made you happy."
"As great as that sounds, Mom, I already told you that I won't get there in time."
"Are you a Son of Ipswich or not?"
"You want me to Use to get to the airport on time?" Reid exclaimed. "Who are you and what have you done to my mother?"
"Desperate times call for desperate measures do they not?" she asked. "Besides, Using once won't get you addicted. You haven't Used in ages."
"Thanks, I think."
"Go get her, son."
Hannah hated waiting. She had to wait to get through security, and she had to wait for her plane to board. She should have waited to leave school. Airports were boring after five hours, but thankfully the waiting was about to come to an end. The woman behind the ticket counter announced that the plane would be boarding, unfortunately she would be one of the last people to board. Just what she wanted, more waiting.
"Finally," Hannah mumbled when they called for the rest of them to board. Pulling her luggage behind her, Hannah got to the back of the line. "As if it could take any longer."
"Hannah! Hannah!" her head lifted, she knew that voice, but it couldn't have been his. "Hannah Davis, don't you dare get on that plane!"
"Reid?" Hannah spun around to see the blond standing before her, panting as though he had just run a marathon. "Reid, what the hell are you doing here?"
"What does it look like I am doing? I'm stopping you from getting on that plane."
"Why?" Hannah crossed her arms over her chest.
"Why do you think?"
"Excuse me, Ma'am," the woman at the counter spoke. "Are you going to board this plane?"
"Hold on a minute please," Hannah said. "Reid, I can't do this right now. I need to go."
"No, you don't," Reid grabbed her elbow. "Don't do this. Don't run away from this. From us."
"What us, Reid? There hasn't been an us for weeks," she cried. "Let me go."
"No," Reid said firmly. "Not this time."
"Ma'am, if you're going to be on this flight, you need to board now."
Hannah was fighting with herself. She wanted to hop on that plane and leave everything behind, but there was something pulling her away, and it was Reid. He had come for her. He came to the airport to stop her from getting on the flight and running away, running away from everything that they had created. How could she let that go? She hadn't realized until now, but she had been crying the entire confrontation. Why did he have to do this to her? Why wait this very moment?
"Ma'am?"
"I don't think she's going to board this plane tonight, do you?" Reid asked her. The woman smiled at the couple, calling to the pilot that everyone was on loaded on. "I'm not losing you again. I love you, Hannah. I said before, you're it for me, and if you think that I am going to let you get onto that plane and leave everything behind, you're crazy."
"Reid-"
"Don't say anything just yet," he stopped her. "I need to do this now before I freak out and get cold feet. Hannah, you changed my life. Before I met you, I was a bad guy who didn't give a damn about anything. I slept around. I drank too much. I didn't care. But that day we bumped into one another at the bar, you did something to me, and I can't thank you enough for it. We became friends which soon turned into something more and it was the most amazing thing in the world to me. When I heard the pregnancy rumors going around, I freaked out at first, but then I began to realize that maybe that's the way our life was supposed to go. I could see us with a family, but when you told me you weren't having a baby, I don't even know how to explain it, but if it wasn't supposed to be it wasn't supposed to be. I never stopped loving you. I would wake up every day, and you were the first thing that would cross my mind. You're the reason I want to be a better person. I want to be better for you. I want you in my life. For now and forever," Reid dropped down onto his knee and pulled the box our from his pocket. "I was going to wait until graduation, but I think this is a better time. Hannah Davis, will you marry me?"
Hannah was at a loss of words. He had just spilt his heart out to her. She was wrong, she was wrong about so many things. He did want a future with her. Why did she have to push him away?
"Coming to an airport and spilling out your feelings; how cliché is that, Reid?" she asked. "Proposing in an airport? Is that how you really want to ask me?"
"Only if you say yes," he smiled back at her. "I feel like I'm in a cheesy, romantic movie right now."
"So do I," Hannah giggled. "And I think everyone else staring at you would agree."
"My knee is losing feeling. Just thought I would let you know."
"Are you suggesting that you're getting old, Mr. Garwin?"
"Just answer him, lady." Hannah jumped at the man's outburst.
"Reid, I never thought I would meet another guy after what Trey did to me, but I'm glad I did. I'm sorry I didn't let you explain about what happened that that morning, and I'm sorry I jumped to conclusions. I was just afraid what happened years ago was happening again," she said. "I had been dreaming about this moment for months now. I never thought it would be like this though."
"So, is that a yes or a no?" Reid asked.
"Yes," Hannah said. "Yes, I'll marry you, Reid Garwin."
"Thank God," he got to his feet, cupped her face and kissed her. Something he had been missing for weeks. "I love you. I love you so much."
"I love you too," she replied, kissing him again. "I am so sorry."
"You don't have to be sorry," he told her. "Let's get out of here. Everyone is staring. I don't like this. Is this how movie stars feel when they are filming these scenes? I'm very uncomfortable."
"But what am I going to do, Reid? I sold almost all of my stuff," Hannah said. "What am I going to do after graduation? I have no job offers. Nothing."
"I was going to wait and tell you this later too, but I contacted the company that puts on the auditions and explained why you missed your time slot, they're going to give you another chance."
"What?" Hannah shouted. "Reid, I don't know-how-"
"Don't worry about it," he said. "I know how much it means to you, and it's your dream after all. You shouldn't have missed your shot at it because of something so stupid. It's the least I could do."
"I love you so damn much!" she kissed him again. "Take me home, Reid."
Home. He liked the sound of that.
