In Hogsmeade outside its church Kairi was unpacking some bags which Madam Rosmerta had put an extension charm on so they could carry all the food. Having nothing to do for the rest of the day Rayne had decided to help out. She was complaining about Namine lecturing her on using her powers.
"I mean you would think after letting out all of her anger out on that warlock she'd at least be a bit more relaxed" Rayne told Kairi
"Well I suppose everything's changing now we're" She paused on the arrival of an old woman "You know what"
"I like it. Now that I'm Charmed I can see whether what I do will be alright or not before – Hi!"
An old man gave a funny look before taking the tray off her and Kairi glared.
"What's wrong with you?! Have you lost your mind?" she demanded
"Please it's not like he took me seriously" Rayne replied
"You don't know that he could've. I think since this whole thing started we need to be a bit more careful"
"Well there's being careful and then being paranoid. Wanna talk?"
"Talk about what?"
They were interrupted by the priest greeting Rayne and asking how she was doing. Then Rayne left for Honeydukes and the priest turned his attention on Kairi and gave her a look.
"Alright! Got this friend has a little problem, could be bad, not sure what I should tell her" She said in a rush
"Want to come inside?" He asked
"NO! I mean I've gotta go"
"So what's the problem?"
"She thinks she might kinda sort of powers out of the ordinary"
"So evil beings again Kairi?"
"Not good is it?"
"Not I question I get every day I'll give you that. Do you remember your Sunday school lessons? 'Thou shall not suffer a witch to live'"
"Which means?"
"In old school it means put her to death she's evil"
Great, thought Kairi. So that's it she's evil and needs to die? But Rayne said the Charmed ones were good witches so surely they wouldn't be sentenced to death. Would they? Rayne meanwhile was down the road at Honeydukes buying a stick of gum, looking at the magazines when she heard an elderly couple discuss what numbers to use in the wizard lotto.
"Should we use the grandchildren's birthdays?" the man asked his wife then he noticed Rayne and smiled at her "It's a ten thousand galleons jackpot. Today may be our lucky day"
"Maybe," Rayne replied reaching out to touch the lotto tickets.
"If not we're going to lose our house"
Rayne closed her eyes and let the vision take over as the winning lotto numbers appeared before her eyes: 4, 16, 19, 30, 32, 40. Her eyes flickered open again and she muttered the numbers to herself while the shopkeeper looked at her like she was crazy. She walked up the old couple.
"4, 16, 19, 30, 32 and 40. Trust me sir, today is your lucky day and I think I'll get one of these lottery tickets too"
She made her way back to where Kairi was waiting for her grinning like an idiot. Kairi stared at her questionably as she wondered what had happened at Honeydukes to put her in such a good mood but didn't ask as she would probably regret asking later.
That night at The Three Broomsticks Namine had come to check up on Kairi and find Rayne. She found Kairi quickly ordering people around and run off her feet. Namine tapped her shoulder.
"Oh hey, remind why I wanted to do this for a living?" Kairi asked
"Well it looks like you're the only one of us that is going to be doing anything for a living" Namine told her "I think I messed up my interview"
That is when Namine spotted Rayne finally. She was sitting with a handsome guy wearing a very expensive dress.
"What is she doing?" Namine demanded pointing Rayne out to Kairi.
"Flirting" Kairi answered
"Wearing that? Where did she get that?"
"Not from my trunk. Look I better go I'll speak to you later"
Kairi left for the kitchen while Namine went towards the direction of the youngest triplet who welcomed Namine with open arms when she approached their table. She introduced Namine to the guy and introduced the guy as Darren to Namine.
"Nice dress" Namine complimented
"It's not yours don't worry" Rayne replied immediately
"Oh I know, I could never afford it"
"Darren, would you excuse us?"
She got up from the table and took Namine's wrist and guided her to the kitchen to have the argument that would surely ensue in a matter of seconds. As soon as they were in the safety of the kitchen Namine turned on her.
"How are you going to pay for that? You're skint." She exclaimed
"Well not for long" Rayne answered
"What do you mean by that? Please tell me you didn't use your powers again?"
"Maybe, maybe not. Are you telling me you haven't?"
"No I'm not but we're not talking about me are we?"
Kairi appeared literally out of nowhere as she came in between Rayne and Namine with a panicked expression on her face.
"whoa what are you two doing in here?" She asked
"the same thing we do at home" Rayne answered
"So what did you do place a bet or" Namine started
"The wizard lottery"
"Rayne!" said Kairi disapprovingly
"What did you expect me to do dear sisters? I couldn't just ignore the vision and not help a needy family! Sorry but I thought that was what we were supposed to do!"
"No! The Book Of Shadows says we are not to use our powers for our own personal gain!" Namine snapped
"Please not so loud!" Kairi begged
"You said we needed money right? Well I'm getting some!" Rayne shot back
"Please guys!"
"So why don't you get a job like everyone else?!" Namine demanded
"I'm using my mind" Rayne defended herself.
Just then Harry made an appearance.
"Hey Nami, can I talk to you? Hermione said she saw you go in here" He explained
As he took a step forward so did a waiter who was carrying a stack of plates they walked into each other and the waiter dropped the plates on to the floor, pushing Kairi's panic to its peak.
"Watch it!" She screamed and held up both hands and the kitchen came to a complete standstill. "No! No, no, no! Not again"
"Good job Rayne, now look at what you've done?" Namine blamed
"This is my fault" Rayne shouted at her
"Wait why aren't you two frozen?" Kairi asked
"Guess it doesn't work on us, Kairi how long does this last?" Rayne asked as Namine took a peek outside to see the rest of the pub still moving.
"I don't know!" Kairi cried "Not very long!"
"Umm guys, it doesn't work out here either" Namine informed them
"Merlin! Tell me this isn't happening!"
"Calm down, its okay. It's all going to be fine" Rayne assured Kairi
Namine took another look outside and saw Ron walking towards the kitchen looking for Harry and quickly informed her sisters of this, who then pushed her outside to distract him while Rayne tried to calm Kairi down and find out how to unfreeze the kitchen.
"Breathe, Kairi breathe!" Ordered Rayne as the kitchen door swung open to reveal Ron but luckily everything unfroze just in time and Kairi took a deep breath and Rayne sighed in relief. Kairi then shooed everyone except the workers out of the kitchen and Namine promised to talk to Harry tomorrow.
The next morning Hermione and Namine had left for breakfast together and Rayne had just woken up and was in the middle of drying her long black hair after going in the shower. Kairi was in the room they found the Book Of Shadows in flicking through said book. Running back her conversations with Father Williams in her head. When she heard the sound of the hairdryer being cut off and the door open. Kairi looked up to find Rayne leaning against the door jam.
"Morning, what are you up to?" she asked
"Reading" Kairi answered "Thinking"
"Really? About what?"
"About how messed up we are now we're Charmed."
"Oh, that"
"Rayne you don't understand, you don't think we are. You're never afraid of anything. I envy that about you and I always have"
"Well Kairi you shouldn't because it gets me into trouble a lot. C'mon talk to me sis"
"I guess it's just our whole lives we've just been like everybody else. Rushing off to classes, going on dates, shopping and then suddenly we wake up one day and everything has changed. We're Charmed now and I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing"
"It's a great thing"
"We don't know that Rayne. We don't know anything about these powers and that is what scares me the most: We don't know why we have them, what they mean, where did they come from? How do we know it's from evil? How do we know it's not from Voldemort? Training us up to be his evil Hench witches."
"Kairi c'mon we've been through this. We're good witches"
"We don't know that. What about Jeremy? What about the other warlocks The Book Of Shadows said would be coming after us? How do we know we aren't like them? That is what scares me. I just want to be normal again, as screwed up as that was. Is that really too much to ask?"
"Listen to me Kairi, you are the sweetest, most caring person I know and I mean that. You're always there to help anybody. Even strangers. So there is no way that you have been given this – this gift if it wasn't to do good things. To protect the innocent just like it says in the book. Besides I think if any of us should be concerned of being bad it's me right"
Kairi laughed.
"You've got nothing to be afraid of" Rayne assured her "Now I am off to have my picture taken"
"You're going to ditch class?" Kairi asked sceptically
"Yep but it's for a good cause. Cover me alright sweetie. Bye, love you"
"Love you too"
And she was off to meet up with Darren leaving Kairi shaking her head after her. That's when she came rushing back in.
"Did you forget something?" Kairi asked
"No it's just I think this place needs a name" Rayne told her "And I was thinking how about the Room Of Shadows? Get it coz this is where we found The Book Of Shadows."
"Yeah I get it. I like it, you should tell Nami"
Rayne smiled and went off to the Great Hall to grab a slice of toast, tell Namine about her suggestion then sneak out to Hogsmeade (as unlike Kairi she didn't have a job there so she couldn't go whenever she wanted to) with George Weasleys help.
Kairi however was going back to the church even though Rayne's words had soothed her worries slightly she still needed proof she wasn't evil that there was really nothing to be afraid of. Stood back across from the holy building looming over her telling herself it was okay and repeating Rayne's speech in her head to encourage her before starting her short walk across the road from where she stood towards the door. She took hold of the handle then quickly swung the door open without hesitation then stepped in then out again quickly as if doing a little dance. Then she stepped in properly and found herself to still be alive, with a massive grin on her face she confidently stepped outside again.
"I'm good" she cheered not caring if anyone was around.
Out the corner of her eye she saw an old woman, turning so she could see her properly she saw that she resembled her Hufflepuff friend Hannah Abbot. Kairi approached the woman to get a closer look and took her hand to help her looking down on her hand she saw the same tattoo Hannah said not trusting her eyes Kairi looked back up at the woman.
"Hannah" she asked
The woman looked at her with a confused expression.
"You know me? Is that my name?" she questioned
Something had obviously happened to her to make her fast forward into a grandma and made her lose her memory but what Kairi didn't know and so decided to take her back to Hogwarts and to the sister's room in Gryffindor tower.
Namine was in the archaeology classroom as she surprisingly to her passed her first interview and was asked to do a second one. Professor Snow had gathered various artefacts and was quizzing her on them while the caretaker Filch was above them on a ladder painting as Professor Snow had requested it.
"So what can you tell me about this piece?" Professor Snow asked indicating to a magnificent painting.
Namine took a good look before answering.
"Madonna of the meadow, it dates back to the 16th century" she told him confidently "It would be worth around 4 million galleons if it was real"
"What makes you think it's not?" asked Miss Lockwood
"It's too well preserved if this was an original it would have yellowed and the painter never used pine frames"
Just then Filch knocked the can of paint off the top of the ladder and would have gone all over Namine if not for her powers. She brushed off Professor Snow's apologies and left after he presented her the winning fifty house points. As she left the professor turned to his assistant.
"So what do you think?" He asked her
"I think she's either the luckiest witch alive or she's Charmed"
Ten minutes later Namine arrived in the Gryffindor common room and rushed up the steps to her dorm to tell Kairi the good news however she was distracted when she walked in to find Kairi sitting an old woman down on the edge of her bed before noticing Namine's presence. Namine shot her a quizzical look.
"You're not going to believe this" Kairi started to explain "I'm not fully sure I do but that is Hannah Abbot from Hufflepuff"
"Yeah cute Kairi and I'm Cho Chang" Namine drawled
"No really look at her hand! See she has the same tattoo and then I asked her some questions things that only Hannah would know. It's her I swear!"
"Okay you check the Book Of shadows and I'll try and contact Rayne"
Kairi flicks through the Book and her eye catches the page titled Javna and called for Namine who rushes in unable to contact Rayne.
"Here. It says Javna steals youth from young witches using the powers of the evil eye." Kairi told her
"Is there a way to reverse it?" Namine asked
"Yeah it's here: The Hand Of Fatima, evoked centuries ago to banish Javna back to Hell"
Just then they hear a crash come from near Rayne's bed. They quickly went to see what had happened and found Hannah on the floor who seemed to have fell in her hand was a piece of paper that had the photographer's -that Rayne went to meet- number on it. Kairi picked it up reading the name.
"Darren that's who Rayne went to see" Kairi said confused
"Javna" Hannah gasped
Kairi and Namine both looked at each other the same thought running through their heads: Rayne. They grabbed the spell and bolted for Hogsmeade.
In the studio Rayne was tied to an operating table as Javna starts to use his eye beams to take away her youth, Namine and Kairi burst through the door and Namine flings him away from her sister. Kairi rushes to Rayne taking out her wand to use alohamora. Looking for what had disturbed him from his snack Javna's eyes glued themselves to Namine and started up his eye beams again but was thwarted as Namine picked up a mirror and deflected it back. Now free Rayne and Kairi go over to Rayne who takes the spell out if her pocket. Together they chant:
Evil eyes look unto thee,
May they soon extinguish be,
Bend thy will to the power of three,
Eye of earth evil and accursed.
Javna disintegrates into a pile of ashes and the three sisters decide to stay in Hogsmeade a bit longer to enjoy a victory butter beer in the three broomsticks.
"Okay you guys were right I have got to be more careful in the future" Rayne admitted
"Did she just-" Namine started to say nudging Kairi before being interrupted by Rayne.
"Yeah yeah hand me some parchment and I'll write it down for you later coz you're never going to hear me say it again."
"I'm glad we helped those people" Kairi piped up "It's refreshing to know that our powers actually are good"
"Told ya"
The old radio next to them crackled out that it was time to announce the winning wizard lotto numbers. Rayne's eyes lit up and she got out her ticket only to find the numbers wiped she slumped back into her chair while her sisters giggled at her.
"See you can't use your powers for personal gain" said Namine smugly
Rayne groaned and Kairi laughed raising her new bottle of Butterbeer.
"To the power of three" She announced "Love it or hate it"
