Itachi, Kisame, and Deidara had barely gotten twenty feet away from the compound before they realized they had very little idea of what dog to get Pain, while they knew Pain was a sucker for dogs they had very little idea of what type of dog to get him. It took even less time for them to start arguing with each other over what dog to get.
"Well I know he's not a big fan of small dogs" Deidara said
"Why not?" Itachi asked with shock "You can literally carry them anywhere with you!"
"While that's true they also bark… endlessly you know Pain hates it when we start acting up, that's why Sasori is his favorite" Deidara said
"Okay so what about a Labrador then, they're really friendly and could probably look past Pain's scary appearance?" Kisame asked
"Look who's talking" Itachi muttered
"What's that supposed to mean?" Kisame growled
"You're a shark…like literally you're a freaking shark!" Itachi said
"You bastard! I'll kill you!" Kisame yelled out drawing his Samehada while tears were forming around his eyes
"Stop it you idiots!" Deidara exclaimed stopping Kisame from getting to Itachi
"Tell him to say sorry then" Kisame muttered
"I'm sorry you look like a shark"
"An actual apology" Deidara lectured
"Fine…I'm sorry I said you looked like a shark, I agree with you that getting a Labrador would be a good idea" Itachi said sullenly
"…I just realized do any of us have any money so we could buy a dog, or are we going to have to steal one?" Kisame asked quickly getting over the past offense. Deidara and Itachi looked at each other before checking their pockets and coming up empty handed.
"Well, looks like we're stealing one then" Deidara said
"How, we can't traumatize the poor thing?" Itachi asked
"Maybe you could just use some Genjutsu on the dog we decide to give to Pain?" Kisame suggested
"No, dogs are resistant to that stuff"
"They are?"
"Guys, I think Pain figured out we all ran away" Deidara interrupted
"What makes you say that?" Kisame and Itachi asked
"He's staring at us from the window in his office" Deidara pointed, Itachi and Kisame followed his finger and froze up when they saw Pain staring at them with what looked like anger. He mouthed something to them, before all three of them sprinted away from the compound as fast as they could. They ran for a good five minutes before they felt safe enough to look back and see if Pain was after them, he wasn't behind them and they couldn't sense any malevolent presence nearby so they decided to take a break.
"Okay so do any of you know of a village nearby that sells Labrador puppies?" Itachi asked
"Why puppies?" Kisame asked
"If you get them as a puppy then they'll have more time to bond with their Master, duh" Itachi answered
"You don't need to be an ass about it" Kisame muttered sullenly
"I feel like I've been to a village where they sold Labradors…but it's like a hundred miles away from here" Deidara offered
"I ain't travelling that far" Kisame groaned
"Me neither" Itachi agreed
"Fine well we'll have to think of another dog to get" Deidara sighed
"Golden Retrievers!" Kisame shouted happily
"Yeah they're cute, but they demand way more attention than Pain can give" Itachi pointed out
"Oh yeah…how about a Shiba Inu?"
"Such wo-" Deidara started before Itachi smacked him into the ground
"Don't even start that" Itachi muttered
"Fine well how about we just walk to a nearby village and see what they got?" Kisame suggested
They agreed on that plan, before heading out though they each transformed into someone less wanted by the authorities. They transformed into a normal looking family with Itachi taking on the role of a dad, Deidara the mother, and Kisame who transformed into a normal looking child. The first village they went to was a disaster, for one apparently cats were the favored pet and dog-lovers were hated but strangely dogs were in the village. Deidara quickly got into an argument with a cat owner that soon escalated into some threats followed by the three Akatsuki members getting run out of the town by an angry mob. The next village they went to was a bit more peaceful but the only dogs for sale were angry chihuahuas that bit Kisame when he got too close.
"Why did those things keep biting me?" Kisame muttered sucking on the bite wounds he had received
"They're pure evil that's why" Deidara muttered his hate for chihuahuas and cats amplified by their recent experiences
"Maybe it's cause they can smell that you're a shark, even if you look normal dogs can still smell the shark" Itachi offered transforming back to his original self
"I know that's supposed to be an insult, but I think you're right" Kisame sighed as he went back to normal
"So what do we do now guys, I know two villages is a small sample size but I'm kind of getting bored of looking for a dog for Pain" Deidara said sitting down
"Well then you can go back to Pain and get assigned even more work while Kisame and I get a nice fluffy dog for Pain and get unsuspended" Itachi said as he and Kisame were leaving Deidara behind
"Ugh, fine I'll come with you!" Deidara exclaimed running to catch up with them "But seriously this is going to take forever guys, it's not like some majestic dog will appear on a hill and willingly come with us" Deidara said before walking into Itachi who had strangely stopped in place
Deidara was about to yell at Itachi for stopping so suddenly when he saw that Itachi and Kisame were both staring at something that was standing on a hill in the distance. Deidara looked closely and saw that it was a dog, about medium sized with majestic black and white fur, its head rose and it gave a mighty howl. It then noticed the three oddly dressed ninjas staring at it; it returned their gaze before walking towards them. It stopped in front of them and looked at each of them as if to appraise them before it seemed satisfied and sat in front of them.
"It's…so cute" Itachi said reaching his hand to pet the creature, it let him rub its head before licking his hand causing him to giggle
"It's perfect!" Kisame said hugging the creature who was now wagging its tail happily
"But what is it?" Deidara wondered as he pet the creature
"It's obviously a wolf; I mean what else howls like that?" Itachi said
"But wolves aren't this friendly though, they're also gray not black and white" Deidara said
"Does it matter? It's friendly and it doesn't have a collar so we're not stealing it from anybody let's bring it to Pain!" Kisame exclaimed
The three of them had no trouble getting the wolf-like creature to follow them back to the compound. They saw Sasori who told them that Pain told him to inform them that they go to his office whenever they get back, he looked at the dog strangely before shrugging and going back to his room. Itachi, Kisame, and Deidara weren't scared anymore though and went confidently to Pain's office with their new friend in tow.
"You three realize you're in a World of…" Pain started before noticing the creature who was wagging its tail at him "Trouble…" he managed to finish, he could barely hold the excited squeal of seeing this fluffy wolf in his office
"Yes we know, but the reason we disobeyed your orders and ran outside the compound was to find a furry friend for you" Itachi explained
"You're openly admitting to bribing him?" Deidara whispered
"Look at his face, he can barely keep himself from hugging this fluffy thing" Itachi whispered back
"Very well then, Deidara I will not be giving you even more work for putting that sign on my door. Itachi, Kisame I have decided to reduce your suspension to just a single day, but please don't kick any more of our allies in the balls when on vacation" Pain said, he gave a bemused smile as the three S-ranked criminals hugged each in excitement before running off to find Sasori leaving Pain and the wolf in the room
"It's so fluffy" Pain said as he pet the wolf who seemed very happy and gave Pain a lick on his cheek "You know new friend, sometimes it's hard to do what I do. I make so many decisions that I look back on and wonder if they were the right ones, I'm only doing what's best for the world yet so few understand my noble intentions." Pain said filled with emotions, the wolf gave him an understanding look which made him smile before he noticed something odd
"Wait a minute, is that the Sharingan I see in one of your eye" Pain muttered before realizing who the wolf was "OBITO!"
