Chapter 12
Turning Up The Heat
His hands were clammy, his heart was pumping, and he could have sworn that he was looking at a ghost. He had done so much to escape Jenna, but here she was standing right in front of him. Memories started to flash through his head and he felt himself getting sick.
"W-What are you doing here?" He stuttered out as he backed away from her, but with each step he took back, she came forward.
He flinched when she kicked the motel door shut with her foot and she smiled at his reaction. He made sure to stay far away from the bed and he eventually ended up being backed into a corner.
"Awwww, didn't you miss me, Toby?" She questioned and he bowed his head down, so that he wouldn't have to look at the sight of her."It's okay. You don't have to respond because I know you did."
"No, I didn't." He said in deep, stern tone that surprised even himself.
"I like your place." Jenna said, completely ignoring Toby's words. She walked around the room and grazed her fingers over a few of his things. Then she got to the bed where she sat."It's not like your other place. I like this place better its easier to get ahold of you here."
His head snapped up as soon as she mentioned his loft. How could she have now what his loft looked like? That's when some thing started to click.
"You did it. You trashed my loft, not Andrew." His jaw clenched with every word he spoke to the point where he thought his teeth were gonna crack.
She chuckled maliciously."I did because I was hurt when you left and I missed you. But then I started noticing that a certain brunette had been hanging around there. I did some digging and found out that her name is-"
"Don't." He interrupted her."Don't mention her name."
"Whatever, it's not like she's really relevant right now." Jenna stood up again and walked over to Toby. He wouldn't look her in the eye, so she forcefully grabbed his chin and turned his head towards her."This is about you and me. And right now you need to get it together, so that we can get back to normal."
He jerked away from her hold and glared her down."There is no you and me. There's only me and Spencer."
That's when he felt the familiar sting on his face. He hadn't felt that in such a long time, but the memories all came rushing back. Jenna smacked him just like she used to, but this one seemed to hurt a little bit more than the last.
"Fine, have it your way, Toby." She walked over to the motel room door and opened to leave, but before she did she said to him over her shoulder."I'll see you around."
She slammed the door shut and left Toby standing in the middle of the room, holding his throbbing cheek. He was back in a place he didn't want to be. He was back in hell.
"Andrew, I just feel like we're not right for each other. I know you've been trying to change and that's great, but I feel like it's a little too late for you to change now. I hope that we can still be friends because I'll always still love you." Spencer's repeated this same speech over and over again. Shes been practicing in front of the mirror in her bedroom for hours. If she was going to break with Andrew, she wanted to do it right.
Ever since leaving Toby's motel room last night the only things that have been on her mind is him and Andrew. She had wanted to stay with Toby last night and almost went back if her mother hadn't called her again from the car. She went to bed that night with dreams of Toby. She dreamt about the way she felt safe and warm in his arms. How his kissed ignited something inside of her. And his eyes that showed just as much hurt and pain that her eyes showed.
"Spencer." She snapped out of her thoughts to see her mother standing in the doorway. Her mother looking as perfect and pristine as always.
"Yes, mom?" She said cautiously because her mother was rarely home or rarely visited her room when she was home.
"Andrew's downstairs waiting for you and he has a surprise for you." She smiled widely at her daughter and nodded towards the stairs.
Spencer let out a deep sigh before putting on that familiar fake smile."Okay, I'll be down in a sec."
She nodded before leaving and disappearing down the hall. Spencer took one final deep breathe as she got her thoughts together. She slowly walked out of her room to go downstairs. She slowly walked down the stairs and as she got to the final step she saw him.
Andrew was sitting on the couch, holding flowers with a goofy smile on his face. He looked up at her and stood up to approach her. He placed the flowers in her hands and kissed her before she could protest.
"Happy anniversary, babe." He said once he pulled back from Spencer. She looked at him confused until it finally clicked in her head that was there anniversary. Their three year anniversary. It was a shame that it would have to be there last.
She sat the flowers down on the ottoman before taking Andrew's hands in hers."Andrew, we need to talk."
His eyes furrowed at her as they sat down on the couch."Aren't you going to tell me happy anniversary? Or thank you for the flowers?"
"I'm sorry, but I need to tell you this before you hear it from someone else-"
He stood up abruptly with eyes wide."Are you pregnant?"
"No!" She shouted as she stood up with him feeling slightly uncomfortable."I wanted to talk about us."
"What about us?" He said questioningly as he crossed his arms over his chest.
She inhaled deeply before exhaling. She looked into Andrew's eyes, the eyes she feel in love with long ago. But now looking into his eyes all she saw was a stranger.
"Andrew, I don't...I don't think we're working out. I still love you, but I don't...I'm not in love with you any more."
He scoffed comically before his face broke out into a smile. He paced the floor for a little bit and Spencer gave him his space. He looked up at her with murderous eyes.
"You're breaking up with?" He asked in disbelief. Spencer swallowed down her fear and nodded her head.
"Yes. But I still hope that we can be friends." She said as nicely as she could, but she still had her guarded up.
It was a good thing that she kept her guard up because after a few moments Andrew snapped. He picked up the glass vase on the table and flung it at Spencer. She was lucky enough to duck and for it to hit the wall behind her. Before she was fully standing again, he was charging towards her. She closed her eyes and braced herself for the repercussions of there break-up.
"Hey!" Spencer opened her eyes at the sound of her mothers voice. Andrew was only a few inches away from her and she could see the hurt and anger in his eyes."What is going on in here!?"
Spencer looked around at the scene around her. The broken glass from the vase scattered around the floor. The ottoman was flipped over and the flowers crushed. Andrews hand was slightly cut from throwing the vase, his hand dripping with blood.
"Nothing. We just had a misunderstanding, Mrs. Hastings." Andrew said with his most assuring smile that anyone would believe, but Veronica wasn't buying it.
She walked over her daughter and protectively pulled her into her arms."Spencer, are you okay?"
Spencer was still in shock, so she stood there frozen. She wanted to tell her mother that everything wasn't okay. She wanted to her that she was afraid, but the words couldn't come forward.
Her mother didn't need her to say anything. The look in her daughters eyes said it all."Andrew, I think you need to leave."
"But, Mrs. Hastings-"
"Don't!" She shouted causing Andrew and Spencer to jump."Get out now and don't you dare come back here."
He looked between Spencer and Veronica in disbelief. He shook his head and a low growl sound came from his throat as he turned around to leave. He slammed the door as he left causing Spencer to flinch. As soon as Spencer was sure he was gone, she broke down in her mothers arms. Because she knew if her mother wasn't there, then she might not be here right now.
"Shhh, it's okay." Veronica whispered into her ear as she rubbed Spencer's arm."Me and you have a lot to talk about."
"I asked it before and I'll ask it again. Why did you vandalize Toby Cavanaugh's loft!?" Peter yelled angrily at Detective Wilden.
Wilden snarled at him."I had nothing to do with that. It wasn't anyone on Rosewood P.D."
"You're lying."
Wilden chuckled before taking a seat in his office chair."I don't have any reason to lie. What am I gonna do arrest myself?"
Peter paced the office floor as he spoke."You can't do this to him. He doesn't understand what he's getting into."
"No, he understands perfectly. You told him to leave and he didn't. You told him to stay away from Spencer and he didn't." Wilden gave a careless shrug."He knows what he's doing and he knows the risks. It's his choice and choices have consequences."
"But-"
"No more buts." Wilden and Peter looked over to see Robert Campbell standing in the doorway. And he did not look very happy."We have a bigger problem."
"I think I can fix whatever problem you have, sir."Wilden said as be stood up to take direction, but Robert held up his hand to dismiss him.
"I don't need you," He turned to Peter."I need you."
Peter was more confused than ever."Me? For what?"
He smiled a sinister smile before he said."I need you to get my son and your daughter back together."
Andrew bounced his leg vigorously up and down as he sipped on his coffee. He was beyond pissed off. He was mad as hell. He had just lost Spencer Hastings. Expect, he wasn't going to let her go not by a long shot.
That's why when he left her house, he set up a meeting at the Brew. He had called his father and told him what happened and his father said he would take care of it. Andrew didn't want him to take care of it because obviously nothing his was father was doing was working. That's why Andrew had a plan of his own a full proof plan.
The door to the Brew chimed and Andrew's head snapped up. He smiled when he saw her walked into the door. She gracefully strolled over to him, turning a few heads in the process.
"You wanted to see me?" She asked, getting straight down to business.
He sat up straight and leaned in a little close to her."I need you to handle something-well someone for me."
She raised her eyebrows looking intrigued."What's there name?"
"His name is Toby Cavanaugh. I want you to get him as far away from my girlfriend as possible."
"Is that it?" She inquired as she pulled a tiny mirror from her purse to check her make-up.
"Yeah, expect I don't just want you to distract him. I want you to dig up any dirt you can get on him."
She snapped the mirror closed and squinted her eyes at him."That'll cost you extra. I'm not some super spy."
He held up his hands in defense and chuckled slightly."I'm willing to pay whatever it is to get my girl back. Any other questions?"
"Just one." She leaned in close to him to whisper in his ear."Why is this girl so special?"
"Because this girl is my world and Toby Cavanaugh is just some guy who's not even worth the scum off the bottom of my shoe." He smiled at her and looked her up and down."That's why I needed you. You're the best."
"Well, I'm always willing to help out a friend." Alison smiled at him before standing up and leaving the Brew to go find Toby Cavanaugh.
Spencer felt emotionally and mentally drained. She had just got done telling her mother about Andrew. About the things Andrew had been doing for the past three years. Her mother cried. Spencer cried. But it was like a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She had never felt so loved when her mother held her so tight in her arms. She felt even more safe when Melissa came home and joined the embrace.
"You look at me. He's never gonna touch you again. Okay?" Veronica said to Spencer as hugged her again before she could reply.
The doorbell rang downstairs causing Spencer to tense up. She looked at her mother and sister with scared eyes. Veronica held her close to comfort her. And Melissa stood up.
"I'll get it." Melissa said before she slipped out of the room. Spencer didn't fail to notice that she took her filed hockey stick with her."It's your friends!"
Her friends. Spencer completely forgot about them. She didn't want to tell them because she was always the strong one and right now she felt really weak. She also didn't want her friends to worry about her. Now, she was backed into a corner and she had to choose. Tell them now or tell them never?"
"Do you want to see them?" Veronica asked and Spencer silently nodded her head."Alright, I'll send them up."
Spencer watched her mother leave the room and she felt that familiar feeling. Fear. She wiped her eyes to at least look a little put together for her friends. She sat up on he bed and prepared herself. Within a few seconds, Hanna bursted into the room with Emily and Aria on her heels.
"This is it, Spencer. We are tired of you disappearing on us like a ghost. I mean seriously what is your pro-" Hanna's yelling stopped when she finally turned to face Spencer. She saw Spencer's puffy eyes and broken expression.
"Spence, what happened to you?" Aria asked as she raced over to her best friends side and held her hand.
Emily was next to join Spencer's side."Are you alright?"
Spencer bravely nodded her head, but too many emotions overcame her at once. She shook her head and let the tears fall out again. She leaned into Emily and felt Aria and Hanna's arms wrap around her.
"Spence. Hey, talk to us. Tell us what happened." Hanna said as she held onto her best friend tight, but only three words fell from Spencer's lips.
"Call Toby, please."
"Are you sure that this is a good idea, Toby?" Caleb asked as he loaded another box into the backseat of his car.
"I can't stay at this motel anymore." Toby said more coldly than he meant to. He was just on edge about Jenna being back. He needed to get out of that motel.
After Jenna left, he called Caleb and Jason and told them he had to leave. He was going to move anywhere. He would even stay on his truck just to stay away from Jenna. Caleb and Jason both offered to let him stay with them, but Toby didn't want them to get involved with Jenna.
"Dude, you're checking out in the middle of the night. Where are you gonna go?" Jason asked as he placed a few more of Toby's things into Caleb's car.
"Anywhere."
"Why don't you stay at Spencer's place? In her barn?" Caleb suggested, but that thought made Toby's blood run cold.
"No...no I can't stay there. I'll think of something." He stammered out as he put his last box in Caleb's backseat and shut the door.
Jason cocked his head to the side and looked at Toby questioningly."What's the matter, Tobes? Something's up."
"Nothing is wrong. I just need to go." Toby said defensively before walking away from his friends to get into Jason's car.
As he was getting into the car a few cars pulled into the motel. And it wasn't just any cars. They were police cars and there were about three of them. Toby closed the passenger side door and walked cost towards the cars. His face turned into a scowl when he saw that it was Wilden.
"Detective Wilden." Toby acknowledged him, but you could hear the distaste in his voice.
"Toby." Wilden smiled at him before flashing a flashlight in the eyes Toby and his friends."What's going on here?"
"Nothing." Caleb spoke up and Wilden turned his attention to him."We were just leaving."
"It's a little late to be checking out." Wilden shined the light into the back of Caleb's car."In fact, it's a little suspicious to be leaving in the middle of the night."
"We didn't know it was a crime." Jason said sharply as he got up into Wilden's face.
Wilden chuckled before putting the flashlight away and pulling out handcuffs."Well, you know now. You're all under arrest."
"For what!?" Toby inquired as he stepped away from the officer trying to handcuff him.
"I don't know yet, but I'll think of something good." Wilden said gleefully as he turned to the fellow officers behind him."Take 'em in, boys."
The officers closed in on Toby, Jason, and Caleb. They pushed the officers away and prepared themselves for a fight. Toby didn't mean to get his friends involved with this. They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Wilden glared at them as he pulled out his baton."Fine if you don't want to go willingly, then we are authorized to he force."
Toby felt his phone buzz in his pocket. He hadn't had his phone with him all day and he was really hoping it was Spencer. He really needed to hear her voice. He momentarily glanced down at his pocket and that was the wrong move. He heard the painfully escape Caleb's lips as he was struck with the baton. Toby's head snapped up, but he was instantly tackled down by three officers and he felt the blows come and come and come. It felt like it would never end until everything blurred and then faded to black.
*Sorry for any errors, but I had to do this quickly because I'm out of town and where I'm staying I have no Internet, so I had to his this quickly while I was out.
