Chapter Twenty-Four

When Kurt wakes up, he finds the other side of the bed empty. The clock shows 7 am. Could it be that Diane never came home last night?

A slight worry takes over him as he quickly gets out of bed to check the rest of the house. His breathing only calms down when he notices his wife sleeping fully clothed on the couch in the living room. He stayed up long, waiting for her, for a chance to talk, instead of fight, but eventually he fell asleep.

He's relieved that she is home and he knows better than to wake her up. He fetches a blanket and covers her before he goes to the kitchen to put on some coffee. He'll eat something for breakfast, take Justice out for a walk and wait until she wakes up.

Not that he knows what he should tell her exactly. He isn't angry anymore and if he'd had the chance to calm down before facing Diane, their conversation would have turned out a lot differently. But he cannot change what happened. He knows that he obviously needs to apologize for certain things he said, but she needs to do the same, because she hurt him too.

He really wanted her to meet his son, that's why he offered her to come along each time, but she always declined, said she needed more time. Now he knows why. Maybe it's foolish, but he's still hoping that once she meets Kenny, she will change her attitude. The kid is innocent in all of this, Diane just needs to finally accept his existence, because he's never not going to be a part of Kurt's life anymore.

"Are you making lunch already? What time is it?" Diane appears in the doorway of the kitchen, almost startling Kurt, but he's actually glad to hear her voice, that they won't just give each other the silent treatment.

"It's almost noon," he replies and quickly fills her mug with coffee and walks there to hand it to her.

"Thank you," she takes it and stares at him without tasting the drink.

"I'm sorry for last night," he decides to swallow his pride and offer an apology first, hoping she will do the same.

"I'm sorry too," she answers and those few words are enough for him to forgive her, because he knows that she means them.

"Sit down, are you hungry?"

"I may have drunk a little too much last night," she admits and he is tempted to ask what exactly happened, but he doesn't want to push her, he knows she will tell him eventually.

"The coffee will help," he says softly and considers whether or not he should sit with her or continue preparing their lunch, when she makes the decision for him.

"I want to meet your son someday, I just still don't feel ready for this step."

"I understand, but you need to trust me," he takes a seat next to her, using this chance that they can talk about it calmly this time.

"I do," she looks at him for a second, before she hides her face again, "But you can't blame me for being jealous when you spend time with her. You have a child together."

"I'm spending time with my son," he reminds her.

"I know and you seemed happy with him. I know it's my fault that we haven't really been happy lately. I'm not dealing with his existence too well."

"Look at me," he touches her chin to make her look up, "I'll give you all the time you need to deal with this, but please don't shut me out, don't go behind my back. I promise that I'm not the least interested in her and she isn't interested in me like that either."

"I've learnt my lesson," she replies, "It won't happen again, I promise."

"Okay," he nods, "Enjoy your coffee," he says and leans forward to place a kiss on her forehead, before he stands up to get back to the cooking, "I hope you'll be hungry by the time lunch is ready," he teases her as he continues the chopping.

"I'm sure I will be…I was with Will by the way, just in case you were wondering," he hears her say and he finds himself smiling that she shared it without him asking.

"So you two are back to bonding over drinks now?"

He is glad that they are starting to mend their friendship, at least he knows Diane had someone to turn to, someone he also knows and trusts.

"Just like old times."

"Next thing I know you'll announce that you're leaving the Supreme Court, because you miss the firm."

"You know I do."

"I do," he replies.

He wouldn't be surprised if she actually decided to say goodbye to Springfield someday and start all over again in her original profession. She hasn't been a lawyer for decades for nothing. He knows she misses it and doesn't feel she belongs where she is now.

"I need to get something for this headache," she wants to stand up, but he interferes.

"I'm bringing you something, just stay put."

"Thank you."

After he hands her the pill, he observes her for a little while. Even in pain and slightly hangover, she is still the most beautiful woman to him. Despite what she'd done and the ugly words they threw at each other's head the previous night, she is still the one he loves. For him this marriage with her will always be worth fighting for.

to Justine: thank you so much for the review, it was nice to hear from you again :) I'm glad you like that Jack is involved, I'm having fun including him in the story, even though I didn't really like him on the show. And ofc Diane 'using' Will is acceptable :P I hope this chapter was worth the wait ;)
