Chapter Thirty-Two
Diane has been pacing the living room impatiently for the last half an hour. She's unable to occupy herself with anything while she is waiting for Kurt to arrive with his son. He said it wasn't hard to convince Miranda, looks like she's accepted that Diane would be a part of her child's life just like Kurt. And Diane finally feels ready to step into that part.
When the key turns in the lock she stops her pacing and turns to the door.
"We are here," Kurt enters with his son in his arms and the sight of them immediately makes Diane smile.
"Hi," she starts walking towards them slowly, eyeing the little boy, who notices her and she can see the interest in his big brown eyes.
"This is Kenny," Kurt introduces his son with a proud grin on his face. "And this is Diane," he tells the boy, while Diane steps in front of them.
"May I?" she holds out her arms to take the boy from him and he lets her. And Kenny doesn't seem to mind. "Let's get you out of these warm clothes," she brings him to the couch and takes his winter clothes off.
Kurt sits on the couch next to Kenny and when Diane is ready the boy climbs to his father's lap, which makes Diane chuckle.
"Apparently he likes being in daddy's lap," she remarks, enjoying the sight.
"He's used to me already, he will get used to you as well quickly," he says with a confident smile.
"Maybe I can speed up the process if we play something together," she replies with a mischievous smile.
"We've brought some toys with us," he brings her attention to the blue backpack. "The plush toolbox I gave him when we first met is still one of his favorites," he adds with pride audible in his voice.
"Well I know next to nothing about tools, but I know something about animals and I wanted to give him something to remember me by as well."
She can see how her confession comes as a pleasant surprise to him.
"You shouldn't have."
"But I wanted to."
She hurries to her study to get the box. She actually asked Will to help her with the present, who enjoyed the time they spent in the toy store almost as much as a kid would have. Even though in the end they managed to buy something Diane preferred, she didn't let him talk her into the boring cars.
Kenny grabs the colorful box as soon as it's within reach and Kurt decides to put him down on the rug, so they can open it more easily.
They sit next to him and Diane soon feels his hand on hers, pressing it gently. She glances at him and he says a silent thank you, which she returns with a smile.
"So are we ready for some farming?" she reaches for the box to open it.
"I think we are," Kurt replies and Kenny's incomprehensible but enthusiastic words suggest that he is ready too.
o-o-o
"I can't believe I heard you singing farm-songs and imitating animal sounds today." He is still under the influence of their afternoon with his son when they are eating dinner.
"I can't believe I did either, but I guess there's always a first," she laughs, not hiding that she enjoyed every minute spent with Kenny and Kurt, Farmer Eddie, the chicken, the horse, the cow and the sheep figures.
"You were wonderful with him and he obviously likes you. He kept asking about you on our way back in the car."
Diane doesn't doubt that the boy likes her, he even let her kiss him when they left with Kurt, but she finds it cute, how Kurt is overly excited.
"He doesn't even speak yet, how do you know he was asking about me?" she chuckles.
"I just know," he insists, making her smile even wider.
"It was my pleasure and he is welcome here anytime. I like him too and he looks a lot like his dad."
"His dad, the farmer?" he remarks in a teasing tone. "It was on purpose, admit it."
"Admit what? I bought your son an expensive toy. You're welcome," she replies with a cheerful smile.
"I guess I should thank you there were no guns involved," he laughs.
"I hope you aren't thinking of teaching your son to shoot yet," she asks playfully, knowing that he's probably already looking forward to that moment.
"Nah," he shrugs, "I'm going to wait until he is ten."
THE END
A/N: I'd like to thank everyone who stayed with this story till the end. Writing a not fluffy multi-chapter story for this couple was a challenge for sure. I'm glad you didn't hate all the evilness and trusted that I'd make things right by the end. I hope the end lived up to your expectations. Trust me, it wasn't easy to solve this mess I created, but I can only blame myself. :D
Next time I'm going to try something completely different. I hope you'll follow that McHart story as well. It's coming very soon. ;)
