Chapter 40; Dying Hope

None

Leaving the room, Cece hurried Anne, Cole, and Kai out the door quietly. She felt in her heart she should not 'interrupt' Laura and Lloyd's 'moment'.

Of course what Cece had in mind did not happen.

Kai's eyes were on Cece. He was frustrated. When it came to sarcasm, he never could have thought someone could have mastered it that well. First he had to deal with Jay hitting on his sister then this?

Yet there was something about this chick that Kai could not stop thinking about.

Cece turned to his direction and he awkwardly blushed, turning his head away. With no doubt in his mind, he knew perfectly well about the sinister Cheshire smirk on Cece's face.

Recalling their last kiss, Kai was discombobulated. He strongly disliked Cece and strongly liked her at the same time. When her lips met his, it felt like a passionate poison. He loved it but could not admit it even to himself.

The feel of her body near his…

Kai shook his head.

He needed to focus about what was happening now.

Kai somehow found himself in the bridge with Cece, Anne and Cole. The four of them wandered here with Cole being the only one who had a clear mind. Taking a little longer to realize they had stopped, Cece bumped into Kai.

Blushing slightly, Cece stepped away from Kai but focused on what Cole was about to say.

"How should we go about attacking the Serpentine?" Anne asked.

Cole thought for a moment, "First, Sensei Wu, Lord Garmadon and Misako will watch Nya so Jay will help us." Cole paused, "I think Laura should stay here. Lloyd probably will fight though.

But what are the Serpentine doing now?

Why haven't they attacked us yet? They must be planning something so we must be on guard. If we wait here and wait for them to attack we will still not be at full strength. So, we need to attack them and get Skales' staff.

If we have his staff then we can UN-hypnotize Nya. Then we will build up our defense and wait for their next move. We have to protect the bounty also…"

While Kai and Cece were glaring at each other, Anne nodded in understanding.

While Emma turned the old-looking door knob, Zane peered over her shoulder. Twisting around, Emma looked at Zane with an accusing stare. Emma's boots overdramatically stomped on the old and spunky floor boards. Raising fine black eyebrows, Emma was curious why Zane was so inclined to follow her inside her room.

Concerned, Zane pondered Emma's earlier statement. 'MAYBE I AM OFF DEAD!' the scarring cry rang through Zane's memories, 'What is it that will happen that would make you want that, Emma? Want death?'

"I am sorry Zane. I just want some things to change so bad…" Emma said.

Interrupting his thoughts, Zane jumped a little bit.

"Emma, why can you not change it?"

"It is all set in stone. I see the genuine future. If I changed the future I see now then the future I see now would not have been the future. Therefore if I see what will happen in the future, I cannot change it."

"That is… logical." Zane said. Emma walked up to him and put her hand on his cheek.

"I can still decide what I can do now." Emma said, "And besides, I do not know everything…" Zane looked inside Emma's droopy eyes begging for sleep.

"You need to rest, Emma."

Emma rested her head on Zane's chest. "Yes…"

"Skales, what are we waiting for?" impatiently Skalidor asked, "I am sure half of them are wounded. Why not attack them now?"

"That ship is a fortress. Injured or not they have the advantage." The snake king said.

"So we are just going to wait here?" Acidicus asked.

"Yes." Skales said.

"Have you gone nuts?" Fangtom asked.

"No, they are going to have to get the staff if they want the girl. Let them attack us." The generals, even though they had doubt in their dark hearts, followed their king's orders. 'Skales was never a good leader…' Acidicus thought. Looking around him, he felt his hope of winning this battle die of starvation. He would question Skales, but he knew there was no other Serpentine better qualified. While he watched two Hypnobrai do something incredibly stupid, Acidicus thought;

'We are weak and hopeless. The tombs have drained us of our power. All of the great generals died defending us before we were locked inside those tombs… but Skales must be doing something right… because somehow… the Serpentine are slowly getting… stronger…

Skales is our last hope.'

Due to disagreements, Fangtom guarded the cage with Skalidor instead of Acidicus. Skalidor did not necessarily like Fangtom that much. Fangtom was Skales' second-in-command. Because he had the most military experience, Skalidor thought it would be right if he was second in command.

Skalidor never thought of himself as a king but as a young lad he always dreamed he would become general. Since he was a hatchling, the members of his tribe knew he would succeed his father.

Because of this, his father, the general, abandoned him. He was not exiled from the tribe, but he did have to fiend for himself. Skalidor remembered the moment he became second-in-command in his tribe. The stench of his opponent's blood on his hands… he remembered the mauled corpse well. He did not kill the snake of course. Yet his pugnacious and rambunctious youth scares him to this day. He seemed to be more… mellow now. Yet he knew he was still the courageous… hardy… and robust snake he has always been.

In regards to his father, Skalidor never talks about what happened to the past General. Majority of the Serpentine know the gist of what happened, but only a few snakes know the real story.

Meanwhile, Looking at Camille, Fangtom's fangs showed as both of his heads evilly smiled at the small girl.

Staring at him strangely, Camille couldn't get over the fact he had two heads.

Signaling him to turn back around, Skalidor hit one of Fangtom's heads with his staff. Rolling the eyes on his other head, Fangtom glared at Skalidor.

In the distance, Fangtom saw two Constrictai coming closer and closer to the Generals.

Fangtom turned one of his heads to see a smile like a can of expired sardines on Skales' face.

With a glare that was like an erupting volcano, the famous seer was being dragged by her knees by two scaly munchkins.

Shocked, Camille, Skalidor, and Fangtom shook their heads in sync. After being released by the two Constrictai, Emma stood straight up rubbing her sore knees.

"You couldn't get two taller snakes to drag me over here could you?" Emma asked, looking up at Skales.

Skalidor looked away in shame realizing those were the tallest Constrictai in the tribe.

"Well look at what we have here?" Skales purred. "Where are the others…?"

"Probably they're drinking some nice hot tea on a flying ship without me."

"Have you come here to defeat me…?"

"Yes."

"You, and what army?" the snake king asked.

"Where have I heard that before…?" Emma looks around her, "YOU GUYS GOING TO COME OUT OR NOT?"

Suddenly, a loud crashing could be heard around Skales. He turned away from the seer and saw the rest of the Cosmic Legion and Ninja fighting snakes. They somehow snuck their way up this cliff over the ocean.

Emma smirked. Bringing out the daggers that the snakes foolishly ignored, the blades glinted in the pale sunlight.

Emma aimed to cut through Skales' shoulder but Skales reacted quickly and blocked with his staff.

Knocking the dagger out of her hand, Skales brought his staff towards him.

Thrusting the staff forward, Skales' attack was dodged when Emma jumped backwards.

Quickly, Emma kneeled down to grab another dagger hidden in her boot. In one swift motion, Emma's chin tilted upwards as she threw the dagger at Skales.

Skales wacked the dagger off course and propelled the staff downward at Emma.

Rolling to the side, Emma shot up and stood in high guard. Emma threw both daggers at Skales' tail and punched him in the face. Emma grabbed his staff and refused to let it go. Holding the staff firmly, Skales started to wrap his tail around Emma. Emma then twisted the staff so it would hit Skales in the head.

Skales released the staff but Emma was still his scaly trap. Skales then punched Emma with his knuckles hitting her temple just right. Emma gasped in pain. Holding the staff in one hand, Emma reached behind her and pulled out another knife. She plunged the dagger into the scales on the snake king's tail. Before Emma was released, Skales took back the staff.

Emma spilled on the sandy grass. Getting back up, Emma kicked Skales in the face and landed gracefully on both feet. Skales head stung with pain but he ignored it and swept his tail under Emma's feet. Emma landed on her knees.

Before his tail could slither away, Emma grabbed one of her daggers on the ground and stabbed it into his tail.

Because of her overwhelming adrenaline-given strength, the dagger went straight though his tail and into the ground. Emma grabbed another and stabbed his tail again.

Skales screeched in pain. Thrusting his staff downwards, the staff hit Emma in the stomach.

Crashing on the ground, Emma held her abdomen. Curling up in a ball, Emma felt like she was going to throw up. Emma closed her eyes tightly and waited for Skales to hit her again.

Skales was about to hit Emma again, but suddenly his precious face was hit once more. Electrified, Skales was flung back. After hitting Skales with his elemental sword, Jay quickly grabbed the staff.

Emma looked up like a kicked puppy and saw both Zane and Jay standing over her. Zane looked at Jay and the blue ninja left with the staff.

Taking all the will-power she had, Emma stood on her feet without any help from Zane. the pain was so bad, Emma could cry. However turning around, she felt more adrenaline dull the pain.

Wiping away some blood on his face, Skales stood up and ripped the two daggers out of his tail. Without a weapon, Skales slithered to find another. Skales took a large sword from a knocked-out serpent.

Emma pushed forward but Zane stopped her. Emma's hair whipped in the stale air as she turned to look at Zane. Petrified, Zane was could not compute the overwhelming anger swarming like blue-grey bees in Emma's eyes.

Emma could not focus or think. Emma knew that this anger would be her downfall. Calming herself down, Emma looked away from Zane. Trying to step forward, Emma's knees buckled and she fell on to the ground. Responding rapidly, Zane helped Emma stand on her sore knees. Zane glared into two crimson eyes and he stood up protectively over Emma. A snowy aura surrounded Zane as he shot a snowy fist to Skales' stomach. Flakes of snow bounced of Zane's pale skin as he started to glow. Enraged, Zane threw an uppercut at Skales and he flew a few feet away. Staring into the eyes of a monster, Skales retreated to the helicopter.

Zane calmed himself down. Relieved, Zane turned around to look at Emma. Aghast and almost in tears, Emma felt the unbearable pain and the shock of Zane's outburst of power. Zane walked towards Emma.

It was only till it was too late when Zane remembered they were not alone. Revenging their king, more and more Serpentine threw themselves at the pair. Zane fought off as many he could. Because of using his true potential and defending his love, Zane's strength quickly diminished. Zane felt like he was stuck in a raging sea with peril enveloping him. Zane soon was drowning inside Snakes and flailing weapons.

There was a second of silence.

Ripping a shuriken out of a snake, Zane stared into four ghostly eyes.

Suddenly, he saw a golden blur in a fiery blaze thrash into his head.

Watching in horror, Emma heard a loud plunk as Zane tumbled on to the grass.
