Liam began to feel awkward during the whole exchange between Rachel and the new arrival. "Rachel, I think I'll see you later." He said standing to leave. "This doesn't seem like something I'm meant to be a part of." He kissed her cheek, ruffled Spencer's hair and left.
Every head turned in the direction of Gar.
"Why didn't you say anything, when you left?"
"Spencer go play with Bella in her playroom." Rachel suggested, and he sensed the energy in the room and nodded and left. She abruptly stood up, a scowl on her face and walked passed him heading for the front door.
She knew he'd follow her, so she waited.
"Rachel," he said turning her to face him. "Don't I deserve an explanation?" He asked anger, hurt and betrayal clear on his face.
"I couldn't stand it anymore...I was alone..."
"Who's kid is that?" He asked cutting her off.
"He's my son," she replied glaring fiercely, so much so that the light above their head exploded. "You know what, Kori told me you were gone for ten months...so I'm going back in, taking my," emphasis on my. "Son and going home."
She stormed back into the house, went to get Spencer, grabbed her purse and walked over to Kori, the entire time tears falling down her face.
"I'm so sorry Kori, I'm gonna go." She looked around the room. "It was great seeing you all again, but I'm leaving." With that she left the room, avoiding eye contact with Gar as she hurried passed him. She walked out to the curb and called a cab on her phone.
"Rae," she turned and saw Vic coming over. "Hey baby girl," he pulled her into a hug as she sniffled into his chest. "He dealt with that the wrong way."
"Mommy don't cry." Spencer sniffled, staring up at him mother sadly.
"Oh baby, I'm ok." She said kneeling down and hugging him. "I'll definitely make plans with you again, I'll call you ok?"
"Sure thing." He said as he ruffled her now black hair.
Later that night as she was tucking him in, Spencer asked her a question she was dreading.
"Mommy who was that man?" He asked, staring up at her curious.
"A very old friend of mine, who I lost touch with." She explained as she kissed his forehead. "Now go to sleep, we're going shopping tomorrow."
"Ok mommy, g'night." He snuggled down and closed his eyes. She left shutting off the light and closing the door halfway.
She walked into her room, and curled up into a ball on her bed. That night for the first time in five years, she cried herself to sleep.
It was a couple weeks before she was able to see any of her friends again, and it happened to be Vic and Karen' baby shower.
She walked into their house, Spencer ran off to play with the other kids, she found the guests of honor.
"Hey congratulations you two." Rachel said handing them a large gift bag. "He's not here...right?"
"No, he said he was busy." Vic said sadly. "I can't stand this, you two avoiding each other, you were so close."
"Yes but he left, and I couldn't let him know." She replied. "But enough about that, it's about you two today." She turned to Karen. "May I?" She gestured to her large stomach.
"Of course." Karen laughed.
Rachel placed her hands on Karens stomach and immediately felt the little life in there, she smiled when the little one moved. "Hello little one," Rachel said. "I hope you're not
causing too much trouble for your mommy."
"She likes you, she's really moving for you." Karen said smiling at Rachel, as she stood back up.
"Rachel!" Kori came skipping over, and wrapped the shorter girl in a hug. "Glad you came."
"Yeah," Rachel said smiling.
"Well we had a really great time." Rachel said she she walked out with Spencer.
"Glad you could make it, and thanks for the gifts." Karen said as she gave her a quick side hug.
"No problem," and she continued on to the car. She'd just gotten Spencer into the car, when she was spun around to face the one person she didn't want to see.
"Why won't you just talk to me?" He asked the pain in his eyes made her chest clench. "I've wanted to see you for five years, and the first time I do you won't tell me anything!"
"Look, I really don't have time for this," she said turning away, trying calm her racing heart. She pulled out of his grasp and went to the drivers side of the car. As she was pulling away from the house, she watched him in the rear view mirror, looking dejected.
"Man, what are you doing?" Vic said, putting a hand on his best friends' shoulder.
"I had to see her," Gar said with a sigh. "She won't give me the time of day."
"She's got her own stuff to sort out, I'm sure at some point she'll be ready to talk." Vic said.
"I'm gonna go, sorry for even showing up." He said with a tight smile. "I knew she wouldn't talk to me, I was stupid to think she would."
"You're not stupid man," Vic said sadly. "You two need to sort your stuff out, but I'm not gonna get into ya'lls business."
"Yeah I know, see ya dude." Gar said as he walked away, hands shoved into his pockets.
Kori walked into her house with Bella, who immediately took off, and Gwen who was asleep in her arms. She laid the toddler in her bed, and went to the living room to relax, when she heard a knock at the door.
She opened the door to a very distraught Rachel. "What's wrong?"
"Can we come in?" Rachel asked, Kori then noticed Spencer looking worriedly at his mother.
"Yes, of course." She ushered them in.
"Spencer go play with Bella, please." Rachel said, and he walked away slowly.
When he was out of sight, Rachel let out a shuddering sigh. "I saw him," she whispered.
"Where?" Kori asked rubbing her back soothingly.
"As we were leaving, he stopped me at my car." Rachel said. "I hurt him really bad, didn't I?"
"Do you want the truth?" Kori asked.
"I really don't have an excuse for what I did, other than a selfish fear." Rachel said wiping her eyes. "And I want him to know, it's just I don't know how to do that."
"It's hard, but you'll figure it out." Kori said. "But it's you, who has to figure it out."
"Can we just hang out? I need a breather from thinking about this."
"Of course."
