Chapter 7
After Quinn finished explaining she let them take a moment to themselves to absorb it all. Everyone was stunned to silence. Not knowing what to say or believe.
"We need to board up the windows and doors. We don't want another incident like before." Quinn says.
"Uh yea, there's some board wood in the garage." Leroy says still baffled by what he just heard.
"I'll show you." Rachel volunteers.
"Whoa Rachel, are you sure that's safe?" Leroy asks worried.
"Yea, why not? We're just getting board wood. Besides I'd be safer with Quinn anyway right. She'd protect me." Rachel replies mostly looking at Quinn.
"Yes" Quinn says 'With my life' she adds in her head. She lets Rachel lead her to the garage.
After they leave, the rest spread out in the diner. They were all exhausted, tired, confused, but most of all scared. Scared of what was to come.
Leroy decided to take the first look out shift. He needed to get some air to process and let everything sink in. Sure he still wasn't buying too much into this whole God/Angels possession thing, but he couldn't deny what he saw with his own eyes. There was something freaky going on and the sad part was his baby girl was in the middle of it. Rachel and her unborn baby were in the middle of all of this and he might not be able to save them. He was going to let her down, just like he did with Hiram. His eyes began to fill with tears. He had already lost so much now he might lose Rachel too. He couldn't lose her. He'd die if he lost his little girl.
"Hey you okay?" Santana asks as she walks up to a quiet Brittany.
"Huh? Uh yea, just…thinking." Brittany says. "I'm scared." Santana nods, before taking a seat in front of Brittany.
"Are you like Quinn?" Brittany asks. Santana looks at her confused. "Chosen?"
"Oh. No, that's all Q. I'm just…along for the ride." Santana says.
"So why are you here? I mean you're like walking into the eye of the storm. You could…we all could die." Brittany says.
"I wouldn't really do well out there either don't you think." Santana jokes. "Quinn's my best friend. We've known each other since the fifth grade. She's my ace boon coon, you know. We've been through everything together. She's like my sister. Hell she is my sister. She's always had my back. There's no way I'd abandon her now." A pause. "If I die…at least I'll die doing something I've been doing my whole life. And that's having my best friend's back." Santana exclaims. "Besides from where I'm sitting, being here doesn't seem so bad. I mean hey I got to meet you." she says. Brittany looks up at her surprised before her face breaks out in a smile. Santana reaches up on the table and takes Brittany's hand in hers. "So as far as I see it, it's a pretty awesome day." Santana smiles. Brittany smiles back with a little blush. She looked down at their hands before turning hers over and connecting it with Santana's fingers. This brought a huge smile to Santana's face.
In the garage, Quinn was loading up boards while Rachel stood by watching her every move.
"So what did you do…before all of this?' Rachel asks wanting to know more about the blonde hero.
Quinn glanced at Rachel before going back to stacking wood.
"Oh you know same old. College student, pre-med major. Boring really." she answers.
"You were going to be a doctor?" Rachel asks shocked. Quinn nods. "Wow, so I guess you're just a natural at saving people's lives then." Rachel grins
"I guess you can say that." Quinn chuckles.
"How does it feel? Being chosen…or whatever?" Rachel asks curious.
"It doesn't. I have a mission to carry out and that's it. Although Michael couldn't have chosen a better way of telling me. Put some stress on my back." Quinn slightly winces before rubbing her back where the stitches were. She's a little surprised she hasn't felt much from them until now.
"Are you okay?" Rachel asks concerned.
"Yea, I'm good. Nothing serious." Quinn says going back for more wood.
"So why do you think he's doing this?" Rachel asks. Quinn looks at her. "Michael, why do you think he wants to save us?"
"My guess?" Rachel nods. "He was given an order that he didn't believe in. God lost His faith. Not Michael." Quinn answers.
"But why? Why still have faith after everything that's happened?" Rachel asks.
Quinn takes a moment to think about what Rachel said.
"I really don't know, Rachel." Quinn says. "I mean you're right. Why have still have faith with some much darkness in the world? I mean God chose us, human, as a subject to his love, and over time all we've done is trample that killing each other over race, greed, sexual orientation. Waging war over dust and rubble or words of old books. Just utter nonsense." Quinn says. The way Quinn's words sounded made Rachel almost regret asking. It almost sounded like Quinn was losing her faith. Rachel turns her head away from Quinn. "But then…in the mist of all the darkness, there's people that won't be bowed. People who won't give up." As Quinn speaks she starts walking towards Rachel. "Some people, who realize the being lost is so close to being found." Quinn stands right in front of Rachel. She places her fingers under Rachel's chin making her look up at her.
"He sees you Rachel." Rachel's eyes widens. "Fifteen years old, you have everything taken from you. Your father dies in a mysterious fire that also takes your home. Your other father withdraws from the world. You spend the next 6 years trying to help him find his way back." A pause. "You love a baby that was giving to you in the most horrible way known to man, but you love it with no thought of yourself. You would risk your own happiest just so that he can have the best life possible. You, Rachel, you are the reason to still have faith." Quinn finishes.
Rachel was stunned beyond words. She couldn't believe Quinn knew all of this about her and she hadn't even known the girl for a whole day yet. Then again she is being guided by an angel. That wasn't what stunned her the most. It was the passion and emotion in the way that Quinn said, it brought tears to her eyes. Just the power and conviction and the smoothness as if she's known her for years just did something to Rachel.
Quinn uses the padding of her thumb to wipe the tears from her eyes. Rachel couldn't explain why, but she felt so safe in Quinn's arms.
Realizing how close and how long they had been standing there, Quinn, reluctantly, backs away from Rachel. She didn't want to, but she had to. She had to keep her head clear for this mission. She couldn't get to close to Rachel because she knows that when this all ends, either one of them will die. Mostly her because she knows that she will fight till her dying breath to make sure that Rachel and that baby lives. But she can't get too attached. It would hurt less.
When she feels Quinn backing away, Rachel frowns, wondering what she might have done.
Quinn clears her throat.
"The next shift is starting. We have to get back inside." Quinn says walking away with the board wood.
Rachel stands there confused by Quinn's reaction before following her out.
After putting up the boards around the windows and doors, everyone went around looking for a comfortable place in the diner to sleep. Will decided to take over for Leroy on the next shift on the roof.
They stayed out all night looking out. Will found himself constantly drifting asleep before being woken up by the sound of the crows. On the other side of the roof, Quinn walked around the roof scouting out. She had been up just as long as everyone else if not longer, but she was wide awake and alert.
"Quinn" she heard a whisper. She looked around but found no one. Will was in the other corner sleep. She looked back into the dusk sky when suddenly there was a blinding light.
Quinn blinks the quick blindness away but finds herself no longer on the diner roof. This sky looked different. It didn't look as if she was looking at it from a building or from the ground. It looked as if she were in it. She looks around trying to figure out where she might be and what was going on. More importantly, who brought her here.
Not far from where she was standing, Quinn saw two tall figures. She couldn't see their faces, but she could tell they probably weren't your usual humans. They had this strange looking things on their backs. Kind of like…wings. Quinn's eyes widens. These guys were Angels. So if they were angels then she must be in Heaven. But how? She wasn't dead. Michael must have sent her here. But why? She looks back out at the figures. She might not be able to see their faces, but she could hear them talking.
"…since He has made them, He has taught us to love." figure one says.
"They have brought this judgment upon themselves." figure two, who Quinn couldn't really see that well because he was hidden in the dark, says.
"They're just lost. It is up to us to guide them. That is what we are here for." figure one argues.
"We are here to obey." Figure two says.
"Tell me, Gabriel, do you wish to be the son who gives his father what he asks for or what he needs." figure one says.
Quinn's eyes widen. Whoa Gabriel. So if that was Gabriel, then the other must be…
"This is not your test, Michael." Gabriel says coming from the darkness. "Do not presume to know His heart."
"He made this world. And that tells me He shouldn't lose faith. Not now. Not yet." Michael protests.
"It's too late now. The order has been given. The weak will turn on the strong, and we will undo what has been done. And if you shall defy Him…you will have angered Him for the last time." Gabriel says.
"Only if I fail." Michael counters.
"The war of man is coming Michael, whether you like it or not. The dogs of heaven has been unleashed."
Above them a typhoon of Angels were flying around in one direction as if they were heading towards earth. Quinn looked from the swarm of angels back to the two arch angels, but she only found one, and he was staring at her.
"Pleasure of you to join." he says.
Though startled, Quinn remains poised. She looks around but didn't see the other angel anywhere.
"Where's the other one?" Quinn asks walking closer to the angel man.
"Getting ready for battle I'm sure." he replies dryly.
"Michael right?" Quinn asks. Michael nods. "Cool. You're taller than I imagined." Quinn tries to joke, but Michael doesn't crack a smile. "So… this doesn't look like much of a prison." Quinn obvious. "And telling from what just went down between you two I'm guessing this is where it all started. Where you decided to go against your orders." Quinn says.
"You would be correct." Michael says.
"We're in your head…aren't we?"
"It was the safest place I could think of." Michael replies.
"Figures." Quinn says. "So I'm sure you didn't bring me here for small talk, so what's up?"
"Something bad is coming. Lives will be lost." Michael says.
"Yea I know. Why you sent me in the first place remember." Quinn says.
"You must stay with the girl. Keep her and the baby safe. Never leave her side in the peak of danger." Michael says.
"Wouldn't think of it." Quinn says confidently.
Michael looks closely at Quinn.
"The girl…you're smitten with her…aren't you?" Michael asks.
Quinn stares at wide eyes at the man, though really should she be shocked. He was an angel after all.
"I guess. What are you gonna tell me some shit about it being against God for me to be a girl with feelings for another girl." Quinn says with a slight roll of the eyes.
"I honestly couldn't care who you have feeling for, gender or otherwise, just don't let this hinder your mission." Michael says.
"Well don't worry it won't. If anything it fuels my determination to keep Rachel and the baby safe." Quinn says confidently. Michael nods. "So, just by chance, is there any way you can tell me what happens or who dies? Just a hint." Quinn asks with a sheepish look.
"I am afraid I cannot reveal that to you." Michael says. "Just know that you will need to be with the girl. She will be needing you more than ever soon enough."
"Hey had to try." Quinn shrugs. She looks at Michael. She could tell there was something he wasn't telling her. "Michael."
Michael sighs. "I'm sorry, Quinn." he says.
Quinn looks at him confused for a moment before understanding what he meant. He may not have said anything, but she knew what he was referring to.
"It's cool. Really." Quinn says. "And hey if we're honest…I lost my family in the car accident." Quinn says.
Though an angel, Michael couldn't help but be shocked at the girl's words.
"You knew?" he asks.
Quinn nods. "Figured it out when I first walk into the diner. It's really around the eyes you know. Nose too." Quinn slightly jokes. "Then of course there's the name. I mean how many Fabrays do you know." A pause. "But really, it was after I watched them after…after my mom was taken."
"Quinn…"
"Really, it's cool." Quinn insist. "Sucks, but it's cool. I'm sure we'll be together again. Maybe."
"You know there still can be some time to spend with them." Michael tries.
"Thanks, but you and I both know that's not true. Besides I doubt they even know that I'm well me." Quinn says. "It's all good though, you sent me there for a mission and I plan to carry that out." Quinn says with conviction.
Michael really had to say he was shocked at the blonde standing in from of him.
"I knew I made a good choice in choosing you." Michael says with a hint of a smile.
"Who would ever doubt you?" Quinn grins. Michael grins back.
Quinn blinks and suddenly finds herself back on the roof of the diner. She looks around to find that no one has noticed her absence. She looks back at the dark skies.
"It's go time."
