24 Hours Earlier
"Hey Tobes," Spencer shouted from the top of the staircase.
"Yes love," he responded walking to the bottom of the stairs, meeting her gaze. "I have to pick my mom up from the airport. I'll be home as soon as I can," she said as she walked down the stairs to join Toby at the bottom.
"Okay, I love you," he said to his wife.
"I love you too, Tobes," she said before walking out the door.
…
Spencer had just arrived at the airport and was getting out of her car to pick up her mother. As she walked through the automatic doors she suddenly felt very dizzy. She spotted a bench not too fair from where she was, she walked over and took a seat to wait for her mother.
"Spencer!" Spencer's head shot up as soon as she heard her mother's voice.
"Mom! How was Vegas?" Spencer asked trying to make small talk.
"It was great honey. How have you been? Is there something you need to tell me?" Her mother asked, curiosity in her eyes.
It wasn't possible that she knew. Spencer hadn't told anyone, not even Toby! Was it possible that her mother actually knew her untold secret? Spencer deeply hoped that her mother would be happy, but as we all know, hope breeds eternal misery.
Spencer stood there shocked not knowing what to say. "Shall we be going," her mother said with a knowing smile.
…
In the car to Spencer's parent's house her mother spoke up.
"Spencer, no matter what you have to tell me I will still love you just the same," her mother said staring straight ahead.
"I know Mom, but I just... I don't know what to do. I mean I just got married a few months ago and I'm only twenty-six. This is all happening too fast," Spencer said to her mother as she drove.
"Toby already said he wanted to wait awhile until we started a family, I don't even know how or when to tell him!" Spencer continued.
"Spencer, Toby loves you more than anything on this planet. He will be happy and excited. You may not think you're ready for this step in your life, but I know that you are," her mother said with a smile.
Spencer had not expected to hear that come out of her mothers mouth. She had expected something more like, "I am very disappointed in you Spencer, Melissa never had Taylor until she was twenty-eight," she was thankful she got the much calmer version.
"How far along are you?" Her mother said, breaking the silence.
"When I went to the doctors they said it was somewhere between ten and twelve weeks," Spencer said with a slight smile.
"I am happy for you Spencer, I always hoped you and Toby would have children," Veronica said, surprising Spencer.
"Really?" Spencer said, clearly still in shock. Veronica responded be nodding her head and giving a slight smile. The pair had arrived to the Hastings' household only to see a familiar car in the driveway.
"Melissa?" Spencer said as her sister walked down the stairs.
"Oh my god, Spencer. I have missed my baby sister," Melissa said wrapping her arms around her little sister.
To say things were going good between the two would be an understatement. The two sisters had gotten along fabulously ever since Melissa found out she was pregnant with little Taylor. The siblings, all three of them, had grown much closer over the years. The three made it a tradition to get together once a month with their families.
"What's new with you Spence, it's been awhile. Catch me up on the life of Spencer," Melissa said, causing Spencer to roll her eyes. Veronica gave Spencer a knowing look as she walked upstairs leaving the two alone to talk.
"Well, I was planning on telling everyone all together, but now I'm thinking why wait?" Spencer said to her sister who knew exactly what she was about to say. "Oh my god, Spencer! Are you sure?" Melissa said cutting her sister off.
"Melissa I haven't even told you yet," Spencer said, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
"My baby sisters pregnant!" Melissa shouted, pulling her little sister into a tight hug. "Spence I am so happy for you! Congratulations! How did Toby react?" Melissa said, anxiously.
"Um.. I haven't told him yet," Spencer said trailing off. "Spencer," Melissa said, her tone soft. "I know that this is all new to you, but you need to tell him. He will be over the moon excited," she continued.
"I know, I just.. I haven't found the right time to tell him. I want to be special. I don't want to just come out and say it, what's the fun in that?" Spencer replied, waiting for her sisters response.
"Either way he needs to know. He'll be happy for you, if he's happy seeing you walk into a room he'll sure as hell be happy that you're carrying his child," Melissa said calmly.
…
As soon as Spencer had left her parent's house she got into her car and started her journey home. She couldn't stop thinking of what her sister had told her earlier. Her thoughts were racing back and forth like horses in her mind. She knew that Toby would be ecstatic, but he had said he wanted to wait. Spencer had finally decided... She was going to tell him tomorrow, on his birthday.
Present Time
"Alright Spence, we ate. Now can I please open it?" Toby said stretching out the syllables on please. "I suppose, since I love you," Spencer said, giving him the box and watching him open it nervously.
As Toby opened the box, he felt hot tears sting the corners of his eyes. He looked up at Spencer with love and adoration in his eyes.
"I love you, so much," he said, kissing her forehead and lips.
"I wanted to say that first," She replied with tears present in her eyes. She still wasn't quite sure what was to come, but she did know that it wasn't what she thought. Toby was happy and he loved her. At the end of the day, that's really all that mattered.
Toby sat in the chair across from her not being able to tear his eyes away from what lie in the red box. For it was a positive pregnancy test. It was the key to their bright future together. Toby slowly got up and bent down in front of Spencer.
"I love you Mrs. Cavanaugh," Toby said kissing her soft and smooth lips. "And I love you, Baby Cavanaugh," he said as he kissed her still flat stomach. From day one Spencer had hoped to marry a man like Toby and start a beautiful family. Maybe hope doesn't breed eternal misery after all.
