Chapter 12: Corny Jokes and Turning Points
"What did the baby corn say to the mama corn?"
"No!" I moan, slamming my fists on the table. The stray giggle still makes its way out of me. We're in the library, working on our English assignment together. No, neither of us have been strangled yet. New, I know.
"Stop it, Marvel. Seriously."
He looks at me, unfazed, and says, "The baby corn asked, where's pop corn?"
I pound my hands on the table again in another fit of laughter. My stomach seriously feels like it's about to explode.
"See, I told you it was a corny joke!" he emphasises, stretching out the 'corny.'
Tears of mirth are almost flowing freely.
He laughs with me. "You look like a dying panda!"
Okay, not with me. At me.
"Who calls people dying pandas?" I ask, scowling now.
You did look like-" he starts, but then I whack him with the assignment paper.
His grin widens and he reaches out, tickling me on the sides.
"This is not okay!" I wheeze out between gasps. If that librarian comes around now…
I try to fend him off by hitting wherever I can reach, but it doesn't stop him. I squeal again and push him away, with no luck. Instead, I manage the push over a pile of library books set on the floor. If that doesn't call the librarian over, I don't know what will.
"Hey. You guys look like you're having fun," a voice calls out from behind. His hands fly off me and I leap away. We both whip our heads around searching for the intruder. A petite blonde stands, arms crossed and eyes piercing. If I wasn't paying attention, I wouldn't have been able to tell Marvel's slight posture change.
"Taffeta." His voice comes out somewhat stiff, but it quickly warms up. "I didn't expect to see you here."
"I was just going on a walk," she says, wrapping her arms around him. She snuggles closer to him and pulls him into a kiss, sitting down on the way. I roll my eyes. It's only now I notice the second graders staring from a corner.
I drop to the ground and pick up the pile of misfit books off the floor, placing them onto the table. When my head bobs out, my eyes are burning. Right in the middle of the library, Marvel and Taffeta are locked in tight embrace. Taffeta's manicured are in his hair and his arms are wrapped around her tiny waist. It's obvious to see that they are both completely infatuated in each other and blissfully unaware of anything besides each other.
I feel the wave of unease in the pit of my stomach grow stronger and stronger. When a hear Taffeta let out a low moan, I have enough. I clear all of my belongings into my sling bag in one swipe and leave the library. I don't look back.
Only one thought runs through my mind. What's wrong with me?
"Okay. Punch, pash, partner—Katniss, Delly and Annie," Cato says to Gale.
He pulls a face. "You're killing me, man. I have a girlfriend, you know."
"And? It's not like any of us are going to tell, Gale. Right?" He nudges me and I groan. We're waiting by the park for Glimmer to come before we head off the pool. Seriously, I'm going to kill her if she calls this fashionably late, like our Social Studies teacher, Ms Trinket—a.k.a. the fluffy headed nightmare.
"I don't even know why I'm listening to this stuff, Cato," I sigh. It's not the first time I've been involved in his… games. I sigh when I see his pleading face. "Fine." A smile starts to light up on his face and I add, "But you owe me a double scoop of peanut butter and caramel icecream."
He scowls, but reluctantly nods. He high-fives Gale, but his face turns sour again. "I'd punch Annie, pash Delly and marry Katniss."
Cato raises an eyebrow. "You would choose Delly over Annie?"
"Dude, Finnick would murder me!" Gale laughs.
"Then what about Peeta?" Cato counters.
I roll my eyes. Why am I even- I don't know.
"He doesn't know how to throw a good punch," Gale says.
"Hey!" shouts Peeta indignantly. "You know I'm right here, don't you?"
"Oops," he says sheepishly. "Cato. Punch, pash, partner—Clove, Glimmer and Katniss."
"I've answered this like, a million times already!" Cato moans. "Why is it always these three? You ask this every time, can't you come up with another three?"
"Well, you change your answer every time," I say snidely.
He looks at me. "Tell me, why are you even part of this conversation again?"
"Exactly my point."
He wipes his hands on his shorts.
Simultaneously, "Um, then punch you."
I pout, "Thanks a lot. It feels so great to be loved."
He ignores me and continues, "Kiss Kat and marry Glim."
"What about me?" Glimmer asks, walking up to us.
"Well," I start. "Cato was just saying how h-"
"Clove!" he yells, pouncing on me.
"-loves you," I finish smugly. Cato groans and I smirk at the blushing Glimmer.
"So, let's get to the pool," Cato says awkwardly.
Gale and Peeta follow, and I glare at them. Such a waste of an opportunity.
The day goes by quickly. After countless bombs off the highest springboard, walls of stinging water in our faces and hot chips, we rinse off and walk back home. Glimmer and I stay behind for a bit longer, basking in the sunset.
"Hmm, so you say he's a good kisser," I tease.
"He's not bad," Glimmer smiles.
The playful banter stops. At first, I think she's kidding, but when I look over and her eyes widen, my heart stops. What? Is she serious? Anger builds up inside of me, and strangely there's a tinge of disappointment.
"What?" I manage to croak out.
"Clo-" she starts, putting a hand on my arm.
"Are you kidding me?" I jump up, brushing her off. "You know what, save it."
"Clove. Can you please calm down?"
"Calm down?" I shout. "Calm down? You've been hooking up with my best friend behind my back so I should calm down? You tramp."
As soon as the words come out, I regret them. I know I've gone too far. But fury takes up my mind and my ability to think rationally disappears.
"You know what? I thought you'd be supportive about this. I understand. You're mad. But that does not give you the right to call me whatever you want. I am not a tramp, and you know it," she says, jabbing a finger at me. "It wasn't a fling. We're dating now."
It clicks in my head. The way Glimmer blushed whenever anyone mentioned Cato. They way they both defending each other subconsciously. The subtle glances. The way they'd interacted at the ice cream parlour. The thought makes me sick to my stomach.
Glimmer didn't tell me. Cato didn't tell me. My two best friends didn't tell me. I close my eyes and take a deep breath, desperately trying to calm myself down.
"How long?" I whisper.
She gulps and I mentally brace myself. She doesn't answer me.
"How long?" I repeat, this time harsher.
She still doesn't reply.
"How long?" I'm on the verge of screaming. "Glimmer, answer me."
"Since the start of the year," she murmurs quietly, taking a step back. The start of the year? That's almost been, what is it, three months? She continues, "I didn't tell you because-"
"The start of the year?" I roar. "I thought you were better than that, Glimmer. I thought you were my friend."
Subconsciously, I feel like I'm acting like a spoiled tween. The funny thing is, I don't even care.
"I am your friend," she says firmly. "I knew you were going to be upset, so I wanted to see if it actually worked out with him first."
"And it took you three months to figure that out?"
She sighs. "Clo-"
"You've been lying to me for three months now. Do you know how that feels?"
"I never meant to hurt you," she says slowly.
"Well, you did," I snap.
"Can you at least try to understand?"
"Maybe if you told me three months ago, yes. Now? No. Glimmer, you went behind my back. I thought I could trust you. It's going to be hard to get that back."
"Clo-" she tries again, but it's futile. I grab my bag and walk away, trying to stop the storm of emotions inside of me. My anger starts to direct towards Cato as well, and on impulse I march towards his house. My feet are sore and I'm shivering by the time I reach his house. I ring the bell and he opens the door.
I glare at him. "Why didn't you tell me?"
The way it slowly dawns on him makes me even madder.
"How did you know?" he asks weakly.
There's no messing around when it comes to Cato and I. We both know what the other is thinking, there's no way to hide it.
"Your girlfriend slipped up," I sneer.
Suddenly, he grabs my shoulder. "What did you do to her?"
"I gave her what she deserved."
He lets go of me, disgusted. "You didn't."
"She deserved it," I protest.
"She didn't, and you know it. I knew you were going to be upset, but not like this. This is going too far, Clove. You will apologise to her," he snaps.
"I will not," I hiss. "You guys went behind my back."
"See? This is exactly why we didn't tell you. You are overreacting. Big time."
"I am not." I hope he doesn't sense the slight doubt in my voice.
If he picks up on it, he doesn't say anything. "You're overreacting. I'm going to say what Glimmer didn't have to guts to. Grow up."
With that, he slams the door on me. Shaking, I stagger back towards my house and run into the hallway. I'm hoping to make a clean go, but halfway in my blind flight, Sean sticks his head out of him room to ask, "Clo? Are you okay?"
I run past him into my bedroom. I jump onto my bed, hiding under sheet like a toddler running away from monsters. My head burns and I try to rid myself of all emotions, but nothing works. Finally, my eyes fall on the phone lying on my desk.
I take a deep breath and wipe my eyes as if there were actual tears. Trembling, I punch the number in. The line rings and then the person picks up.
"Marvel?" I curse myself when my voice breaks halfway.
"Are you okay?"
I don't say anything, but wipe my eyes again when the overdue tears threaten to leak out.
He doesn't hesitate and says, "Hold on. I'm coming right over."
A/N: Woah. Marvel and Clove have come a long way for sure.
Okay, so a few of you asked me to do a Clato fanfic, and I'm going to go ahead with it. I'm haven't written much, but I do have a basic plot line. It will be set in 1920s New York, kind of Great Gatsby-inspired. Not sure when it will come out though, hopefully in a few weeks.
Thank you for the reading this chapter, and I would love to hear back from you! It would be amazing if we hit 90 reviews, maybe? I know, a big goal, but we can always try. ;)
