Chapter 35: Arkham Aberration
Expanded Universe, Chancellor's Office…
Anakin Skywalker walked into the office of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine angrily. It had already been a month since he encouraged the Jedi Council to assist him on his search in finding his Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, and even though the Chancellor was his friend, he still needed every resource in order to find her. Now, Palpatine requested Anakin to come to his office immediately for some big news. This better be about Ahsoka. He angrily told himself. If the Chancellor was lying to Anakin, then so help him, he would be aiming his lightsaber at Palpatine with physical harm instead of a calm threat.
Chancellor Palpatine turned around in his chair and smiled to the Chosen One. "Anakin, tell me, how is your search for Padawan Tano?" he asked. Anakin sighed and shook his head. "With all due respect, Supreme Chancellor, I haven't had any luck so far." He admitted. The Supreme Chancellor mumbled to himself before standing up and looking out his window. "Fortunately, my spies in the far, Outer Rim have located signs of a young Togrutan female matching the descriptions of Ahsoka." He informed the Jedi Knight. Anakin immediately darted from out of his seat with his eyes wide with surprise. "Where is she?" he asked. Palpatine turned around and smirked.
"Word is that she has been seen on the planet of Yavin IV." He replied. Anakin smiled and nodded. "Thank you, Chancellor." He said. With that in mind, he ran off to his personal Star Cruiser, the Resolute to take off to the system. Palpatine scoffed at this and sighed. "My boy, I know that you seek your Padawan with all your heart, but if Lord Tyranus is telling the truth about an alternate universe, then I must get to her first." He quipped to himself sinisterly. After stating that, the Chancellor sat back down in his seat, looking over a set of encrypted files from his apprentice.
Earth-16, Mount Justice May 20th 1526 hours EDT
At the Cave, everyone was doing their usual thing, all taking a break from all of their past missions. M'gann was taking care of Garfield Logan, who was now under the hero alias of Beast Boy, as well as M'gann's biologically blood-related brother due to her past blood transfusion. While she was with her younger brother, Serra was in hand-to-hand combat training with Black Canary. She was still recovering from her battle with the male Leaguers under the command of Syrena, but she needed a good workout after all of the fighting and since Serra knew her so well, she was the perfect candidate for sparring with the Bird of Prey. At the same moment, Robin and Kid Flash were playing a videogame as Artemis and Zatanna started to spar with each other as well. Rocket and Jaybo were working on a project together while Aqualad and Saw exchanged battle tactics with one another. Superboy was watching TV, and all Ahsoka was doing was meditating in her room.
As much as she tried, Ahsoka just couldn't stop thinking about what had been happening ever since they met up with Raven and Jinx. What is going on inside of me? She asked herself mentally. As she was meditating, M'gann, concerned for her best friend, was starting to make her way over to her room. Ahsoka, of course, didn't notice this, but when the Martian knocked on her door, she stopped her meditations as she let out a sigh before turning to the door. "Enter." She calmly said. M'gann soon came into the room, showing some concern on her face as she walked towards the Togrutan. "Are you alright, Ahsoka?" the young Martian asked. Ahsoka looked to her Martian friend and sighed before speaking up. "To be honest, something about me doesn't feel right." She stated. Miss Martian nodded at this as she started to sit down next to her.
"About the way you handled things in Vlatava and in Bialya, what happened?" M'gann asked. Ahsoka remained silent for a moment before looking to her hand and clenching it into a fist soon after. "Do all people feel like they have some sort of monster hidden within them?" she asked. M'gann nodded as she stood up. "Connor felt that way when he was released from Cadmus by Robin, Aqualad and Kid Flash, but he soon came over it. I had the same feeling when I was trying to conceal my true Martian identity to the Team, but with their confidence and support for me, I was able to overcome that as well." She said. Ahsoka smiled at this as M'gann started to go on. "If you happen to have that kind of beast within you too, then it's alright. Everyone deals with it, after all." The Martian stated.
Ahsoka sighed at this as she went to sit down on her bed. M'gann watched as she started to pant in frustration, wincing her eyes closed as she tried to hold back the monster that was beneath her skin. "There's a monster in me." She stated. M'gann sighed as she stood up and walked in front of Ahsoka. "What do you want?" M'gann asked. "I'll help in any way I can." The Martian added on. Ahsoka panted, standing up and looking to Megan sternly. "If I happen to go out of control, kill me." Ahsoka said. M'gann immediately gasped at this and started to clench her fists, shaking her head in disagreement with tears forming from her eyes. "I can't do that!" she exclaimed. Ahsoka sighed and placed her hands on the Martian's shoulders. "It will be the only way to stop me." She reasoned, but M'gann let go of the grasp and slapped Ahsoka in the face.
"You're a great friend, but I can't kill you, even if you do go out of control." She remarked. Ahsoka sighed; falling back onto the bed, but M'gann caught her and put her back onto her feet. "We'll find another way, I promise you that." She stated, giving Ahsoka a look of assurance. Ahsoka smiled at this, but the moment was soon interrupted as Batman's voice came into the systems. "Team, report for mission briefing in five." He ordered. The two girls shrugged as they started to make their way to the Mission Room.
In the Mission Room, all of the Team, including Beast Boy, stood around, waiting for their orders as the Dark Knight brought up a holographic image of Eastern Europe. "The League has spotted strange activity in the Eastern European country known as Zandia. We suspect that either Kobra or the ORDER is behind it." He stated. Robin stepped up and looked to his mentor with understanding. "So, are we just to report what is happening there, come back alive, and then report to you about what either the Kobra Cult or the ORDER are planning?" he asked. Batman sternly nodded at this. "We are unsure of any operations going on as of the moment, but I have faith that the twelve of you will be able to discover what the plans are for any of the organizations." The Dark Knight stated.
At that moment, Artemis stepped up and placed her hand out. "Wait a minute!" she exclaimed, catching everyone's attention. "What do you mean by the 'twelve' of us?" she asked. Batman growled softly as he turned to Ahsoka. "Ahsoka Tano is to come with me to Arkham for an interrogation with one of its criminals, the Joker." Batman explained. Robin gasped softly as he looked to M'gann. "Set up a Psychic Link." He softly said. The Martian nodded as she turned to Ahsoka. "Be careful out there." She said. Ahsoka just raised an eyebrow in confusion as Robin started to gesture his hand over to his mentor. "Arkham Asylum is known for holding some of the world's most notorious criminals." The Boy Wonder added on.
Ahsoka sighed as the Psychic Link ended, now starting to think about the Citadel back in her universe. Even though it was meant to be a Jedi infirmary, it was turned into an asylum, and it seemed impossible to escape. She then turned back to Batman, nodding to show that she was ready for the task. "I'm ready." She stated, in which the Dark Knight nodded soon after. He then turned to the Team and nodded. "Team, head for Zandia immediately." He ordered. He then turned to Garfield and sighed. "Beast Boy, you are to stay here under the supervision of Black Canary and Red Tornado." He added on. Beast Boy sighed and nodded as Dinah started to direct him over to another room where Captain Marvel was waiting, as well as Red Tornado. The Team nodded as Ahsoka and Batman started to take their leave through the Zeta Tubes.
Before they could go, Artemis and Serra ran up to the Togrutan, both shoving each other aside as they neared her. "Can I pilot your Starfighter?" they both asked. Ahsoka looked to see that Batman was already waiting for her, sighing impatiently as she turned back to the two girls. She started to point her finger at each of the girls, deciding which one to allow to pilot her Jedi Starfighter. Finally, she turned to Batman while looking to the two girls. "Serra, you ride the Starfighter to Zandia." She said to her Jedi friend. Serra gave a "yes!" of excitement while Artemis groaned, but Ahsoka then turned to her after talking to her Padawan friend. "Artemis, you get to ride it on the way back." She added on. Artemis gave the same gesture, but Ahsoka then shot daggers at them. "I want no scratches, damages, losses of parts, and/or maybe/probably, but not likely/possible destruction of my Jedi Starfighter while I'm gone." She reminded them. Both of the girls nodded before Ahsoka asked, "Is that clear?" Serra and Artemis both nodded as they headed to the Hangar Bay, arguing about the Starfighter.
As soon as that was done with, Ahsoka turned back to Batman and shrugged. "What are you gonna do about them?" she asked amusingly. Batman showed no reaction to the joke, causing Ahsoka to scoff as they left for the Zeta Tubes. "Sheesh! Don't you even have a single hell of a sense of humor?" she asked. Batman said nothing as they both started to enter Gotham. Recognized Batman 0-2, Ahsoka Tano B-1-1. The female computer voice announced as they left the Cave, not entering Gotham City.

M'gann sighed as she was flying the Bioship. She just couldn't stop thinking about what Ahsoka had told her earlier. Ahsoka feels like she just can't control herself. She thought mentally to herself. Still, I just can't kill a best friend, can I? She thought further on. She then looked to the rest of the Team, as well as Serra, who was currently piloting Ahsoka's Jedi Starfighter while Artemis watched in envy. Connor turned to M'gann, taking notice of her worried face in the window reflection. "Everything will be fine, M'gann." He reassured his girlfriend.
M'gann nodded at this and winked. "Thank you Connor." She said. The Boy of Steel nodded as he went back to gazing out the window. Miss Martian sighed and smiled, now going back to flying to Zandia with positive thoughts of Ahsoka still in her mind. Still, she has her friends, and I'm sure we can find a way to cure Ahsoka of this sickness. She thought to herself, now focusing on the positive side of things. Soon, the Team started to near Zandia with M'gann safely landing the Bioship onto a safe ground.
Arkham Asylum 1600 hours EDT
Ahsoka and Batman walked into Arkham, the Togrutan looking around at the surroundings and the prisoners. She could see many familiar faces, such as Doctor Zsasz, Bane, Killer Croc, and much to her disgust, the feminine jokester known as Harley Quinn. "It's safe to know that these guys are behind bars." She remarked, catching Batman's attention as he turned to her and nodded. "These are all very dangerous criminals, Ahsoka. We must be careful about how we do around them." He stated. Ahsoka nodded as they continued to walk.
As the two were walking, Ahsoka started to take notice to one cell. There was a man with dark hair, as well as a scar on his face and two rings on his fingers. Batman looked to the man and scowled with disgust. "Who is he?" Ahsoka asked. The man in the cell started to limp towards her and reach his arm out through the bars. "The name's Joe Chill, Ahsoka Tano." He stated madly. Ahsoka stood back as Joe looked her in the eyes. "If you mess with Batman, or even dare to go after his loved ones, then you will regret it for the rest of your life." He exclaimed, now cross-eyed and dazed in a mad state. Ahsoka shook it off and Force-Pushed him back into his cell. She then turned to Batman and raised an eyebrow in confusion as the Dark Knight seemed to be feeling the urge to kill the man. "What did he do?" she asked, pointing to Chill. Batman growled softly as he started to walk away. "He murdered a family." He simply replied. Ahsoka's eyes widened as she looked back to Joe, sending a dangerous glare. Joe still stood in shock as Ahsoka started to walk over towards Batman, entering an interrogation cell.
As the two entered, Ahsoka took notice of an even more despicable criminal: the Joker. The Crown Prince of Crime, sitting behind a desk for interrogation, stared her down as she and Batman stood in front of the desk, ready to question him for answers. "We've been given five minutes alone with you, Joker." Batman spat dangerously, causing Joker to scowl and for a brief moment, scoff. Ahsoka slammed her fist onto the table, sending the Joker back. "We hear that you needed to talk to me and me only." She stated in an interrogation voice. "What is it that you want?" she demanded. The Joker scoffed and laughed, causing the two to tense up. "This is about that stinkin' ORDER organization. They want something that has to do with the Jedi, and since you are the first to arrive on this planet, you should know." He warned them dangerously. Ahsoka scoffed and crossed her arms. "Spill, Joker." She demanded.
The Joker chuckled and soon after, sighed, lacing his fingers together and sitting back in his seat. "The word is from a former ORDER operative under the name of Ol' Maxie, crazy man, he is, that the ORDER wants to create a Jedi!" he exclaimed. Batman's eyes widened under his mask as Ahsoka started to lean in closer. "What do you mean 'create' a Jedi?" she asked in an angry tone. The Joker laughed as he stood up, his hands still cuffed together. "That's all I know, Tano!" he remarked.
Ahsoka's eyes then started to glow yellow, causing her to grip her head in pain, much to the surprise and shock of both Batman and the Joker. She then got back up and began to push the Crown Prince of Crime into the wall. She then grabbed the leg of the table and placed it against his neck, the splinters started to reveal themselves. "Tell us what we want to know right now, or so help me, I will, without hesitation, gut you like a Rokarian Dirt-Fish!" she yelled angrily. The Joker started to cringe in fear at this, but Batman soon stepped up and placed a hand on Ahsoka's shoulder. "That's enough." He stated. Ahsoka looked to the Joker and scoffed, shoving him to the ground and dropping the leg. "Be thankful that I didn't use my lightsaber." She retorted. The Joker nodded nervously at this as the two started to leave the room.
Batman looked over to Ahsoka with much shock. "That was a nice interrogation move you pulled back there." He stated. Ahsoka scoffed and looked to the Dark Knight as her yellow eyes started to fade back to blue. "He was just pushing me. I doubt it's ever happened to you, since you're all so stoic and never joyful." She quipped. The Dark Knight froze up at that moment, causing Ahsoka to widen her eyes with surprise. "I'm sorry." She said sadly, now looking down to the ground with disappointment. Batman sighed and then placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "It's alright." He replied back. Ahsoka smiled slightly at this and was about to reply back, but then, it happened.
The alarms started to go off and the lights started to flicker. Both of the Knights looked around as the sound of footsteps started to fill the halls. "There's something wrong here!" Ahsoka yelled out. Batman nodded as they saw some guards run down the halls. One of the Arkham guards looked to the two and panted. "There's been a breakout!" he exclaimed. Batman's eyes widened under his mask as Ahsoka gasped. "Take us to the cells!" Ahsoka ordered. The guard nodded as they started to run over to the prisoners.
Poison Ivy, now free, choked some of the guards heading their way with her vines while the Riddler led another prisoner, a young boy named Kid Wykkyd to free the other prisoners. Killer Croc looked around and snarled. "I want this whole place to be ours!" he yelled out. All of the prisoners yelled at this as Harley Quinn picked up a dropped gun and shot some guards. "It's Our House Now! Only greedy, dirty deeds are allowed!" she yelled insanely. Kid Wykkyd nodded at this and freed Doctor Zsasz. "Riot!" one of the prisoners yelled. Everyone else exclaimed in agreement as they started to go after the guards.
Ahsoka and Batman soon arrived on the scene, the young Togrutan Force-Pushing Kid Wykkyd back into his cell as soon as she entered. The Dark Knight scowled in disgust immediately when he saw the escaped prisoners. "We need to contain this situation effective immediately." He stated. Ahsoka nodded at this as she looked around. She then spotted a security camera, still active ever since the sudden breakout. "Let's see what we can get from there." Ahsoka said, pointing her finger over towards the camera. Batman nodded and started to run over towards it, but Bane got in the way, causing the Caped Crusader to take a stand and fight against him.
Luckily, Ahsoka saw this coming and immediately ran over to help. She jumped into the air behind Batman and when she landed on the ground, she dropkicked the giant brute, gesturing a nod over to Batman. The Dark Knight nodded as Ahsoka soon Force-Pulled the camera over to them. She looked to Batman and panted. "Let's get somewhere safe to look over what happened." Ahsoka stated. "Agreed." Batman simply replied. The two then started to run away, but unknown to them, Killer Croc was on their tail with Kid Wykkyd, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and Bane right behind him, all in pursuit of the two Knights.
Soon, the two heroes reached the main control room of the asylum. "Let's see just what happened before." Ahsoka stated. She then brought out a wire and a holo-recorder, both being used to see the footage of what had occurred earlier on. Soon, footage started to show on the display screen, depicting Killer Croc choking one of the guards and even managing to steal his keys before breaking out and starting to destroy the other cell gates holding the other prisoners. "Arkham really needs to get some better security." Ahsoka quipped. Batman nodded at this as they started to take notice to some of the hall monitor cameras.
"Killer Croc is coming for us, and he brought some friends with him." The Dark Knight remarked. Ahsoka's eyes started to widen at the large group with shock and angst. "Is there a way to get them all back into their cells without killing them?" she asked. Batman nodded as he took out a handful of small bombs. "OC gas, phenacyl chloride, and sulfur." He explained. Ahsoka's eyes widened at this as she sent a smirk to the Dark Knight. "Tear gas." She deducted. The Dark Knight nodded in a stoic expression as Ahsoka grabbed one of the grenades. "Let's let them have at it, then." She remarked. Batman nodded as they started to head towards the door.
Killer Croc growled as he and his team approached the control room. "Not such a good place to hide, wouldn't you say so, boss?" Kid Wykkyd mused to his leader. Croc nodded at this as he gestured to Poison Ivy. The florist nodded at this and started to conjure up some plants, which started to make pollen to surround the area so that the two heroes wouldn't be able to escape. Kid Wykkyd then started to walk up to the door, creating a dark portal and reaching his hand inside to try to find Ahsoka and Batman. Wykkyd then turned to Croc and craned his head. "If I succeed on this mission, will I be able to join your ranks?" he asked. Croc growled and nodded slightly. "I prefer to let the results do the talking!" he exclaimed. Kid Wykkyd nodded at this and continued to search around for the two heroes.
At that moment, the door burst open, revealing Ahsoka and Batman, both wearing masks and armed with tear grenades in both of their hands. "Come and get it." Ahsoka quipped under her mask. Killer Croc gasped at this as Ahsoka started to throw one of the grenades, followed by Batman doing the same with his own. Harley Quinn gasped and attempted to run away, but some of the gas hit her, causing her eyes to tear up and herself to fall to the ground. Batman's grenade hit Poison Ivy, causing her to fall off of her mounted plant and just like Harley; she did the same and fell to the ground. Zsasz ran at Ahsoka, but she just grabbed him by the collar and punched a grenade into his face, causing him to tear up as well. Killer Croc and Kid Wykkyd gasped as every one of their helpers started to fall down in tears. Hush and the Riddler fell soon after, leaving only Croc and Wykkyd left.
Ahsoka sent the two a smirk, followed by Batman readying a batarang. Killer Croc growled at the result of the breakout and screamed into the air with anger and frustration. "There will be another day, heroes!" he exclaimed. He then gave Kid Wykkyd a nod and soon, the two disappeared with the twirl of Kid Wykkyd's cape. Ahsoka and Batman looked at the scene in confusion and tranquil anger, knowing that this would be far from over. As soon as the smoke made by Poison Ivy and the tear grenades faded away, Ahsoka and Batman started to remove their masks.
The young Togrutan then sent Batman a small smile soon afterwards. "You know, with you on the lookout, it's no wonder that every criminal in Gotham is so afraid." She mused. Batman slightly nodded at this before letting out a sigh, causing Ahsoka to raise an eyebrow in confusion. "What's wrong?" she asked. Batman gestured his head over towards the exit door and nodded. "There's something I need to show you." He stated. Ahsoka shrugged at this and started to follow the Dark Knight out the door as they walked away from the asylum.

A large group of ORDER Operatives were soon being tied up by Jaybo and Robin. Aqualad looked around them and nodded. "Batman should know that the activity here was nothing more than an illegal trade system going on between the Chinese Triads and the ORDER." He stated. Artemis and M'gann nodded as they soon came back with a crate. "This is more of that Symbio Enhancer stuff we saw Xever use in the Philippines, as well as what gave Black Widow her new powers." The Martian added on.
Zatanna soon came back with Rocket and Serra as they leaned against a rock and let out a sigh. "We found nothing else." Raquel stated, in which Serra sighed and nodded. "It seems that the ORDER abandoned everything the minute their sensors picked up our ships' comm systems." Serra added on. Kaldur nodded and gestured to the rest of the Team. "Let's go home." He said. Everyone else nodded at this as Artemis jumped into the Starfighter.
Serra took notice of this and smirked. "Hope you know how to fly one of these things." She teased playfully, causing Artemis to tense up. "Oh, I do." She quipped. Serra shrugged and the Team started to take off. Artemis started to go away at the controls, as she learned from Ahsoka a while back on how to use a Starfighter. She turned her attention to R7 and nodded. "Come on, R7. Let's go home." She said. R7 chirped happily and soon directed the Starfighter into the air, following the Team in a smooth flight pattern.
Gotham City 1852 hours EDT
A couple of hours later, the two entered an alley ion Gotham City, somewhere near an old movie theatre. Ahsoka looked around, readying herself should anything come their way. The place seemed to be abandoned, and there were two engraved footsteps on the ground, as well as a bronze bullet. Ahsoka started to feel weary of the place, bringing back a memory of the day she was being tracked by the police of the Coruscant Underworld. "What is this place?" she asked. Batman remained silent, causing Ahsoka to place a hand on her hip annoyingly and ask, "What have you brought me here for?"
Batman looked to the ground and let out a huge sigh. "A long time, twenty-seven years ago, a boy named Bruce Wayne was walking home from a movie with his mother and father, Thomas and Martha." Batman started out, as if he were telling Ahsoka a story. Ahsoka's eyes started to widen at this as she listened even more on what the Dark Knight was saying. "When they entered this alley, a mugger, who was hired by a crime dealer, demanded that the mother and father hand over all of their valuables, but they refused." Batman added on. Ahsoka started to feel a bit of hurt when she heard this, thinking about the boy and how he must have dealt with the pain back then. "What happened next?" she asked. The Dark Knight sighed and looked to the ground with sorrow in his eyes. "The mugger, Joe Chill, shot the two parents, and the boy was left to live on his own. He used the occurrence on that day to give him strength, eventually becoming the Dark Knight needed to protect this city from crime and harm." Batman concluded.
At that moment, Ahsoka's eyes widened with shock. "Then, what you're saying is that boy was…" Ahsoka stated, but Batman cut her off, knowing what she was saying as he reached for his hood and revealing his mask, causing Ahsoka to gasp. "You're him, you're the young boy, you're Bruce Wayne." Ahsoka exclaimed in surprise. Batman, now without his mask on, nodded at this and looked at the alley. "Joe Chill was soon caught by Batman, and I tried to make a decision on what to do with him." He added on. Ahsoka nodded and stepped up, as she now knew the pain that Batman held in his heart. "You spared his life and handed him over to the police." She deducted. Once again, Batman nodded. "I carry a heavy burden on my heart, Ahsoka. This loss is something that no one could relate to." He remarked.
Ahsoka shook her head in disagreement as she stepped up and placed a comforting hand on the Caped Crusader's shoulder. "Years ago, my master lost his mother to savages." Ahsoka started out, causing Bruce to turn around with amazement in his eyes as Ahsoka went on with her own story. "He went to try and save her, but after what she had been through, she died, and Master Skywalker never forgot what had happened, as he was always looking out for me." She finished up thoroughly. "You two are one in the same, Bruce." She added on, causing the Dark Knight to sigh and turn away. Ahsoka wouldn't have it, as she placed her hand on his shoulder again.
"You think that you're alone, but you have friends: your ward, friends, the League, and even me to help you out." Ahsoka stated. Batman thought about this for a moment as he started to reach for his hood. As soon as his mask was placed back on, he turned around and did what Ahsoka would never expect him to do: hug her. "Thank you, Ahsoka. My eyes… have been opened." He stated. Ahsoka smiled and soon released Batman's grasp from her abdomen. Batman, for the first time, smiled as they started to walk away from Crime Alley. "Let's go home." He stated. Ahsoka chuckled and started to follow. "You're never alone." She stated once again, walking back to the Cave with Bruce, a true friend to her heart.
