One Day Late
~Prologue~
Pups barked and hopped around the pen, tackling and nipping each other. One pup, however, was sitting in the corner of the pen, playing with a neopets plushie. This pup was a fully black German shepherd, mixed with French spaniel. It seemed to be a loner as it laid in the corner, playing with its plushie. Children and people came into the shelter that day, some buying kittens, some getting birds, and others getting the pups in the pen. No one bought the black German shepherd mix. They all looked over him, adopting the others. Except for one girl, though. She happily walked into the shelter, a large smile on her face. A woman followed her, also smiling as she watched her daughter skip over to the glass pen, admiring all the remaining pups.
"Aw, they're so cute!" she squealed. Her mother walked up next to her.
"You can only get one, remember that," she spoke, and the girl nodded. The shepherd just continued to lay in the corner, his mouth still clamped down on the plushie, knowing he wouldn't be picked.
"May I have that one?" He heard the girl ask. With a happy 'yes' from one of the workers, the shepherd felt himself being picked up. He was surprised, though he kept his beloved plushie in his mouth. He looked down at the girl, who was no older than fifteen. She smiled back at him, her hazel eyes meeting his dark brown ones.
The mother and daughter spent about ten more minutes, getting a collar, leash, food, and even buying the toy he was playing with. After that, the girl carried her new pup home, thanking her mother over and over again for the dog.
"So, what are you gonna name him?" The mother asked, looking at the pup.
"Dream!" she replied, kissing his head. "His name is gonna be Dream!"
"Dream? Well, I guess it's a nice name," she chuckled, finally making it home. Once inside the house, the girl placed her puppy down on the couch and put the collar on him, a large smile on her face as he barked happily.
"I'll get your name engraved on your collar soon," she promised. Dream once more barked with glee, jumping into her arms and licking her face. She only giggled, hugging him and kissing his cheek. "I love you, Dream."
