The future Meets The Past
~ Vlad~
2008
Once Vlad had got home from school he shot noisily up the stairs, not caring if his dad was asleep or not. He got to his room and flung himself down on his bed leaving his bag and school blazer in a heap on the floor.
"Anything wrong master Vlad," asked his faithful wolf Zoltan who could always be found in Vlad's room and nowhere else. `
"It's nothing Zoltan," Vlad reassured his companion but still didn't lift his head from his pillow, "just stupid friend stuff, you won't be interested."
"I'm guessing it's something to do with the Branagh boy."
"Not just him Zoltan it's everything. I have friends here, I can go to school and this castle is not so bad, but things are just going wrong"
"The slayers?"
"Yeah they have been close to slaying dad more than once, and now Ingrid's transformation is coming up, I'm worried she's going to land up on the wrong side of Mr Van Hellsings steak, oh yeah and apparently I'm the Chosen One!"
"Apparently," Zoltan rolled his eyes, "The Chosen One is meant to be the most evil and strongest vampire of all time you are not evil or very strong."
"Thanks Zoltan," Vlad groaned getting up from his bed thinking about getting dressed then suddenly a ghostly voice whispered in his ear.
"Come to me."
Vlad jumped in surprise, "Did you hear that?" Vlad asked as he looked around the room.
"Hear what master Vlad?"
"Didn't you hear it? It was like a whispering sound."
Zoltan shook his head, "There is no one here but us Master Vlad if there was I would smell them."
But Vlad was sure he heard something and he was proven correct when he heard the same whispering voice again.
"To the mirror Chosen One."
"I'm not the Chosen One!" Vlad shouted across the room. Zoltan looked at Vlad as if he had grown a second head or something. Knowing he wasn't going to get an answer Vlad raced off to the place the voice wanted him to go.
The Mirror Room….
Vlad's footsteps echoed down cold stone hall as he made his way to the mirror room. The whispering and creepy voice called to him every now and then as he made his way through cobwebs and suits of armour trying to chop his head off. That voice made him feel colder than these stone walls ever could and he found himself wishing he had left his school blazer on so he wouldn't have to his hug his arms over his chest so as not to feel the cold. That was probably the one good thing about becoming a vampire, he thought, he wouldn't be able to feel cold but then he wouldn't be able to feel warmth either. Speaking of becoming a vampire he hoped this wouldn't be the day and all the possibilities of what would happen if he did, once he reached the blood mirror. Was he going to get turned into full-fledged vampire, having to face his refection but that impossible! He was not 16 yet! But he was the Chosen One.
Once Vlad got to the door he wondered if this was a good idea or not, maybe he should just turn back and leave. The he heard that voice again, it was so close…
"Already having doubts Chosen One," this sounded more like a taunt than a demand or respect and the word 'Chosen One' just didn't seem right to him, it was starting to get annoying. So being the brave boy Vlad was he took a deep breath and swung open the door expecting to see some scary dark figure standing in the middle of the room. But no, he was alone, with the Dracula family blood mirror standing tall and proud before him.
The last time Vlad had been in the mirror room was when Boris transformed and this place still gave him the creeps. Even though this room was not much different to all the other places in the castle he just felt a strange kind of dark presence here, he wasn't sure if it was the mirror that did it or it could be the thought that one day he would come here and become blood thirsty and evil monster.
"Hello!" he called "It's the 'Chosen One' here," he said strolling into the middle of the room hoping his sarcastic remark sounded clever. Unfortunately someone didn't think so. Suddenly the door to the mirror room slammed shut with a bang leaving Vlad in total darkness.
Vlad, in panic, rushed to the door and pulled at the door handle but it was locked tight. Vlad wasn't one who was scared of the dark. Being the son of Count Dracula he knew total darkness was nothing to be afraid off but in this case when you are locked in a strange room, with an evil mirror and a creepy voice that lured you here, well that is something to be afraid of.
But Vlad was not about to give up, repeatedly he bashed on the door with fists, feet and shoulder all the while shouting "LET ME OUT" surely someone must have heard him by now, but after ten minutes it looked like no one was coming.
Vlad sunk to his knees and leant his head back against the door tired of all the kicking and shouting he had just done. Suddenly a bright blue light lit up the room Vlad noticed it was coming from the mirror.
"Don't go near it, don't go near it, don't go near it," Vlad kept muttering to himself with his eyes tightly shut to block off the light that wanted to lure him into the mirror. He felt it beckoning to him pulling him into a world of light that he so craved.
"Don't go near it, don't go near it, don't go near it," but he couldn't resist. The moment he took a peak through his fingers he found himself on his feet and getting closer to the glow.
Only then he was gone…
2013
What a strange year it had been so far and he had no doubts in his mind that it was going to get stranger. Vlad had spent more than half the year listening to his father complaining about the vampire times and other vampires claiming they are him, also dealing with Renfield who thinks he's a girl, Magda's strange disappearing act (Which was slightly deserving), and getting Robin and Chloe back which was one of the few good things. Well the point is that things were running smoothly for the past year but maybe a little too smooth.
Isn't a year with 13 on the end meant to be unlucky?
So far none of the council members have tried to savage his plans, The Count wasn't looking to marry him off or disown him again, the re-vamps were greatly improving, the slayers have been no trouble at all, Mina was sorted out, Jonno is still his friend, no power hungry maniacs have tried to kill his family for once and Ingrid had seemed to stay in line this time and no sign of Erin or Malick, which is probably for the best. He was just waiting for his luck to run out for everything to go horribly wrong. There still another few months for something big to happen, something really big.
But not today, today he was in his special room, the mirror room. Reading and re-reading the vampire councils demands and changes, without Bertrand and his advice Vlad would have to read the contracts very carefully before signing anything. It was sooooooo boring. Oh well someone had to do it.
While reading his tenth paper the candle that flickered on the other side of the table suddenly blew out leaving Vlad in total darkness. Vlad blinked in surprise, he felt no wind that could blow out the candle and he was sure he was the only one here. Hastily he clicked his figures and the light of the candle came on again. He searched the room, but he couldn't see nor sense anyone's presence, but he did feel a creepy vibe buzzing through the room making the hairs on the back of his neck stick up and feel his body stiffen, like he wanted to bolt out the room but was too afraid to move. It's like that feeling you get when you're a little kid and it's the dead of night and you feel something is watching you but you can't bring yourself to move even though your mind is telling you to get out. Well that's what Vlad was feeling right now.
But he was the Chosen One he had faced more dangers than this even before he knew he was the Chosen One.
"Who's there?" he demanded, not willing to show any fear, suddenly the candle blew out again. Vlad was sure he felt no wind, so how can the candle go out? Ok there was definitely someone here even though he couldn't see them. He opened his hand out to produce a ball of fire which lit up the room.
"Hello!" he called out, "Ingrid this is not funny," he said sternly hoping this was one of Ingrid's pranks trying to scare him but he doubted it.
He turned when he heard the door to the mirror room lock. He zoomed to the door pulling at the door knob but it wouldn't budge. But this was no trouble at all he was vampire he could walk right through it. Putting the fire ball in his hand out so not to burn down the door and tried to walk through but he just ended up banging his nose on the solid door. His intangibility didn't seem to be working, someone must have put some kind of metal around the door when he had been reading the papers. Last time this happened it had been his father, Ingrid and his so called brother trapped and it was the shape shifter who trapped them in. But Elizabetta was long gone he had made sure of that, so who could be doing this.
Suddenly the blood mirror started to glow a bright blue around the frame. Vlad look at in surprise he was the only one who could control the blood mirror, unless it was doing this by its self…
Vlad curiously made his way to the mirror taking one step at a time not knowing what this mirror wanted to do next. But what shocked him the most was that he could see his refection in the mirror but vampires didn't have refection's! What was going on?
But unlike the other characters Vlad noticed that the stone creatures that guarded the mirror turn their heads to face him. Vlad stared each creature in the eye not willing to back down. The creatures moved from their position and each put one of their stone hands on Vlad's back and their other hands pointing towards the mirror, these creatures were loyal to him and they wanted to show him something.
So willingly he stepped into the mirror.
Vlad found himself not in the sitting room where all the rest of characters went but a forest. Not much different to the one where he imprisoned Elizabetta but he knew it wasn't the same. It was something about the trees, the light and the lake, that made it a lot prettier. There was no mist or fog but the trees closed in to each other so Vlad couldn't be burnt by the sun's rays. The most noticeable difference between the forests was that there, in a large spacing between the trees, was the same two black seats and a glass table with writing carved in the glass that belonged in the mirror room. They looked very out of place in the middle of the woods was he meant to be expecting someone?
Suddenly a blue portal appeared between two trees and young boy about thirteen, sorry young teenager (sorry thirteen years olds) wandered out of the portal as if in a trance. In fact he was in a trance and he recognised who the boy was.
Vlad rushed to the boy like a human would do, he didn't want to worry his young self that he was alone with a vampire. When he was younger he thought all vampires where blood-thirsty and evil and thinking back to his own blood lust and the evil he committed last year he was probably right.
He clicked his fingers in front of the boy's face the boy blinked in surprise and took in his surroundings. Vlad firmly took the boys shoulder in his hand and the younger Vlad turned to face him.
"You ok?" The older asked. The younger Vlad nodded trying to think where he had seen this man before. He looked familiar, It was obvious he was a vampires his touch was cold, his skin was pale and his clothes where black but he didn't look evil he looked quite concerned for him, they had never even met before but he did look familiar.
"I'm ok thanks," the younger Vlad replied, "Where are we?"
"No idea," the older said shaking his head, "but if I had to guess we are in a forest!" The older held his hands towards the trees stating the obvious, trying bring a little light heartedness into their situation earning a little chuckle from the younger Vlad but then he asked seriously,
"Well, where in a forest, I mean a minute ago was at home in our castle but now I'm here outside in middle of some trees?"
"I think the mirror transported us into some other dimension or other," The older Vlad guessed and then asked, "You did come through a mirror didn't you?"
"Yeah I came through my family blood mirror." The younger Vlad replied.
"So did I" The older replied hoping his younger would pick up that they were the same person. But he didn't seem to the young Vlad just nodded and looked behind the older Vlad.
"Is that a table and sofas?" The younger asked in surprised, it was not the kind of thing you would see in a forest.
"Yeah" the older Vlad shrugged "It's so strange, I'm too worried of what might happen if we sit down on them," again trying to bring some light heartedness back in to the conversation, but the younger being the serious boy he is said,
"I'm sure it's fine," and younger Vlad sat on the sofa and shrugged his shoulders, nothing happened. The older Vlad sat on the sofa opposite with his hands pressed together thinking about what to say next. But he didn't have to it been the younger Vlad that spoke first.
"You're a vampire aren't you?"
The older Vlad nodded,
"You look familiar," the younger Vlad continued, "but all the other vampires I see are my dad's friends and they are more like a thousand years old but you look young and the only other young vampire I've ever seen is my cousin Boris."
The older didn't know what to say to this, should he tell his younger self the truth about who he was or should he just wait for his younger self to catch up?
"I have a cousin called Boris," The older said.
"Must be quite a common name," the young Vlad shrugged, "unlike Vlad, dad says Vladimir means 'to rule with greatness.'" The younger Vlad rolled his eyes, "Like anyone would want me to rule."
"It also means peace," the older Vlad pointed out.
"I didn't know that," the younger Vlad lifted his head up, the older Vlad was sure he saw a glimmer of hope in his eyes "Are you sure?"
"Well that's what is says on Google."
The younger Vlad smiled, "Well I hope it's right for once, hey why am I telling you all this?"
"You can trust me."
The young Vlad thought about this for a second, he had never spoken his feelings to a vampire before, the only people who knew were Zoltan, Robin and Chloe but they just didn't understand. All convincing him that vampires were cool and it was in his blood but it just didn't help. But he was talking to a vampire so he would probably not say anything different from what his father tells him.
"Well, let's just say I don't think you would understand," The younger Vlad said trying to sound polite.
"Try me," The older Vlad challenged. He knew what his younger self wanted to say, but he wanted to hear it, to remember when he was a thirteen year old boy so full of innocence, who knew right from wrong, not someone who ends up dusting vampires whenever they get on the wrong side of him. "I won't tell anyone," he added that's when the younger Vlad decided to spill out his feelings.
"I don't want to be a vampire," and Younger explained, "I don't do evil and nasty, I can't stand the sight of blood and I sleep with a teddy bear, but my father expects me to carry on the Dracula tradition but I don't think I can!" The younger Vlad stopped, the atmosphere seemed to grow tense, the trees felt too closed in, it was almost suffocating. The older Vlad looked at the younger with sympathy and descried to help him out, clearing the air.
"But that's not all is it; you're scared of failing your father and everyone else and that everyone would be disappointed in you but…" The older Vlad paused, "you're scared of failing yourself more than anything, in three years' time where would you be? Who would you be? Would you get yourself out of being a vampire in time, staying good? Would you be out hunting with your father feasting on innocents? Or maybe kicked out on the streets waiting for the next slayer trying to stab you in the back?" His mind started turning back to Erin… 'No stop it Vlad!' his brain mentally shouted 'She's nothing to you now, she's not the girl you first met!"
"And what's your life like?" his younger version asked breaking though his thoughts "because… You seem to understand what I'm going through yet you're a fully grown vampire, tell me please"
The older Vlad thought about this for a second he couldn't tell his younger self about being the Chosen One he didn't need to look on the table to read that, but he couldn't lie though. He felt that now the spot light was on him.
"I can't tell you it is easy," the older Vlad spoke slowly choosing his words carefully, "dealing with the blood lust, just not to sink your fangs into a humans neck, I end up having to steal from my dad's blood cellar and replace the bottle with soy," Vlad couldn't help but smirk, not looking to see his younger versions expression. "But that's not it, I did a lot of bad things last year, when I thought I was doing the right thing, I thought I had my reflection under control but instead I let my new power corrupt me. I'm so powerful, stronger than any other vampire but I became a danger to myself and everyone around me. I killed my tutor, my girlfriend left, I nearly lost my friend and my father nearly disowned me."
"But you're trying to make amends?" The younger Vlad asked who was a bit shocked at the vampire sitting across from him, "You feel guilty for what you did?"
"I do," The older nodded, "if I could go back in time I would, but I can't can I? I just have get though with who I am now and know I'm make progress in trying to change and so far this year I have not killed anyone….. yet," he smiled.
"Well that's a good start," The younger laughed, "I feel better now that I have spoken to someone about my feelings and that someone actually understands."
"Me too," The older replied. Then sadly the bells began to ring and two portals appeared behind the two Vlad's.
"Looks like they want us to go home," said the younger Vlad standing up, the older followed suit. "Will we meet again?" the younger Vlad asked with sadness in his eyes "I don't have anyone else to talk to like this."
"Nor I" The older replayed but this Vlad was full of hope, "but I don't believe in goodbyes and nor should you, you have a long, long life ahead of you don't waste it on worrying what you might lose."
"Thank you," The younger Vlad said, "you're right and maybe you should stop thinking about what you had in your past and just look what you have got now."
The older Vlad thanked is younger self and took his words in mind, he was just about to go through the portal when the younger version called out to him.
"Hey I didn't get your name!"
The older bit back a smile as he stepped into the present with all hope for the future.
END….
NOT! LOL
