No! It was a joke! JUST A JOKE! THINK OF THE FANS!

Nemu swallowed.

The father-daughter dance. Why had she not gotten rid of that? Idiot, she cursed herself in her mind as she forced herself to let go of Uryu's hand and watch him back off to the side.

There was silence as no one approached. Nemu's palms grew sweaty.

The minister cleared his throat. "Erm, would anyone like to take the place of the father? Someone particularly close, perhaps?"

Still no one came up. Shunsui was asleep, and Nanao was avoiding her gaze. Someone coughed.

"Oh, for the love of..." the minister said in his reedy little voice. "I guess I'll have to pick then!" He turned to her. "You don't mind that, do you, dear?" Nemu shook her head. No.

"Well...how about...you!" the minister said, pointing at someone in the back. "Yes, you! Don't look at me like that, you get to dance with a beautiful young lady who was just married. Smile a little! It's a wedding, isn't it?"

Nemu bit her lip to keep from laughing, but a small smile formed. The minister had a way with words, in a twisted sort of way...

Just like her father.

No. No more memories. NO! Nemu silently screamed in her head.

"Come on, Nemu!" Uryu laughed as ran ahead of her.

"I still don't see the purpose of this!" she called to him, easily catching up. Uryu rolled his eyes.

"We're going to a special place," he said slyly, then took advantage of her confusion to race ahead.

"Uryu! URYU! You know I have limited time here!" Nemu warned. Uryu smiled.

"This won't take much time at all."

Finally, the two arrived at a secluded area by the river, hidden from sight by the branches of a weeping willow. Nemu sat on one of its lower branches and crossed her arms in what she hoped was a stern way. "Okay. Now tell me why you brought me here!" she smiled, ruining her sternness.

Uryu sat down next to her. "Well, we've been dating for almost two years now."

"This is true."

"And Nemu...I love you."

"A fact noted," Nemu said, then seeing the hurt flash across Uryu's face, she nudged his shoulder. "I love you too. Fool."

Uryu smiled a little at that. "Well...there's something I need to ask you."

"What is it?"

Uryu nervously cleared his throat and took a small box out of his packet. He knelt down before her. "Nemu Kurotsuchi. Will...will you marry me?"

Nemu gasped, bringing her hands to her mouth as he opened the box. An engagement ring inlaid with sapphire and pearl twinkled up at her. She gingerly touched it, as if fearing it would break.

"Yes. Yes! I will, Uryu!" she cried, happy tears staining her face. "I will marry you!"

Uryu stood up, smiling, and embraced her. "I love you so much."

She sniffed. "Is that a tear I see?" She pointed to his face.

He blinked, then stuttered, "C-crying? A manly man like me? Ha!" He scoffed. Nemu smiled.

As they lay together on the grass later, Uryu asked, "How will you tell your father?"

Nemu thought carefully before answering. "I suppose I will inform him. But not until after I have told the Head Captain and his wife."

"That's smart," Uryu said, closing his eyes. "You're a smart girl."

Nemu didn't answer. I have a smart father.

The stranger walked up the aisle.

Nemu bit her lip so hard she drew blood. It was all she could do to not scream.

Her father walked up the aisle, no make-up on, and a stranger to everyone but her.

How had he gotten here?

She had given him the invitation, after all.

Why was he here? That was the real question.

He reached her and took her into a dancing position, standing a good two and a half inches taller.

"Hello, Nemu."

The music started, and the words were lost to everyone but her.

And done! Had to talk about the engagement, I just had to.

Ooh, father-daughter dance! Yes, this was suppose to be longer, but I split the actual dance and the walking up the aisle into two separate chapters.

Jeez, how long is that aisle? A good 50 meters, it seems like. Everyone takes so freakin' long to walk up it...

Oh wait. That's my fault. Teeheehee...

Don't forget to review! Do I deserve it? No! But leave one anyway, because you're a good person!
