Wow, I'm on a roll here. And by 'roll', I mean I'm going to be paying more attention to this fanfiction from now on. Yay!
Disclaimer: Okay, okay, so I don't own Bleach. Sue me.
Oh wait. You can't because I have an official disclaimer! Hahahahahahaha!
Ahem. Enjoy!
Golden eyes met green. Nemu's breath hitched in her throat.
"What are you doing here," she hissed, forcing her hands to not flinch off the blue-haired man in front of her. His right hand held her waist, and she could feel the elongated middle nail digging into her skin through her dress.
"You were the one who invited me," Mayuri Kurotsuchi sneered. He gripped her hand tightly, and started to lead.
Nemu heard the music in the background. The intro sounded familiar. A 'C'. Then a 'D'. Then a 'B'. Back to 'C'. I recognize this song, Nemu realized suddenly. It was American pop from the 1980s. But...isn't this a song about romance?
"I need to talk to you, Nemu," her father said with a trace of disgust in his voice.
"Why should I listen? Why don't I just reveal you right here?" Nemu questioned quietly but angrily, her eyes hard. A flash of fear echoed in the captain's eyes, but it disappeared when he chuckled softly.
"Why shouldn't you listen?" he fired back.
He spun her around.
"I didn't know you knew how to dance," she said cautiously, hate trying to make its way to the surface. Nemu pushed it down, forcing herself to remain as calm as possible.
"Don't change the subject!" Mayuri snapped, barely keeping his voice unheard by the others watching.
"Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick and think of you." The lyrics had started. Nemu struggled to remember the title of the song, anything to take her mind off of her father dancing with her. "Caught up in circles; confusion is nothing new."
"Nemu," Mayuri said, this time in control of his voice, "Why should you not listen to me?"
"Flashback, warm nights...almost left behind."
"Well, for one you never treated me like a human being, much less your daughter," Nemu said coldly.
"Suitcase of memories, time after -"
She almost had the title. She could practically taste the words on her tongue.
"- sometimes you picture me, I'm walking too far ahead."
"Nothing I did was ever good enough for you."
"You're calling to me, I can't hear what you've said."
"You punished me. You pushed me to my limits. You broke me," Nemu whispered, tears streaking her face.
"Then you say go slow...I fall behind. The second hand unwinds."
"Yet I always followed your instructions," Nemu said bitterly. "And I was always there for you, no matter how badly you treated me."
"If you're lost you can look and you will find me. Time after time."
That was the name of the song. Nemu felt faint as she remembered that piece of information, and fainter still when she saw the sneer melt off of Mayuri's face.
"If you fall, I will catch you, I will be waiting. Time after time."
"Stupid girl. Do you think you are the only one who has felt pain before?" he laughed dryly. "Idiot."
The refrain repeated, and Mayuri spun his daughter again.
"After my picture fades and darkness had turned to gray -"
"You have no idea what it has been like for me. Rejected everywhere. Thrown in the Maggot's Nest. Known as the insane captain of Squad Twelve, and such a pity after such a good leader as Kisuke Urahara. 'If ONLY Urahara hadn't been a criminal. Why did he even save this man from jail?' they all say," the captain said, hate burning in his eyes.
"Watching through windows you're wondering if I'm OK."
"No one ever assumed that I had feelings. Why else did you think I created you?" he spat.
"Secrets stolen...from deep inside. The drum beats out of time."
"So someone could finally put me first. Instead of having to 'earn' someone's respect by discontinuing my experiments and completely changing my personality!" Mayuri glared at her, spinning her once more. If Nemu hadn't known better, she would have sworn she saw a glistening drop of water on his face. But that couldn't be. Her father was merciless, heartless, and, according to him, without tear glands.
"If you're lost you can look and you will find me. Time after time. If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting. Time after time."
Nemu drew in a shuddering breath. "You're LYING."
"You say go slow...I fall behind. The second hand unwinds."
"If you're lost you can look and you will find me. Time after time. If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting. Time after time."
No, Nemu realized. He wouldn't. He has never lied to me. Not to anyone. He distorts the truth, but never lies.

"Would I lie to my daughter on her wedding day?" Mayuri looked Nemu straight in the eye.
"If you're lost you can look and you will find me. Time after time. If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting. Time after time."
No, Nemu realized. He wouldn't. He has never lied to me. Not to anyone. He distorts the truth, but never lies.

"I...I believe you," she said cautiously, a small smile on her face. He smiled back, though it appeared like more of a leer.
"Time after time."
"But you can't control my life anymore," Nemu felt compelled to say.
"Time after time."
"I can make my own decisions. And I have Uryu now."
"Time after time."
"But I will never not consider you my father. You will always hold a place in my heart."
The music ended.
Nemu and Mayuri have a serious father/daughter chat! Yay~!
And Mayuri's softening...a bit. Don't want to make him lose his edge, but still want to make him slightly more humane. So right now, the whole 'emotions' thing is new to him.
Oh! And if you didn't catch on, the song is 'Time After Time' by Cyndi Lauper. Why? Because when I first heard that song one day, I immediately thought it was made for Mayuri and Nemu.
Yup, changing romance songs into family ones in an instant. But really, it works either way.
Reviews? Chapter 8 is coming soon, I promise! Just...holidays and stuff...
