It was a warm darkness that Coyote had sunken into, drifting soundlessly through embers of dreams and half-broken memories. Deeper and deeper he drifted into the void, closed eyes and pale faced, clinging to the last images of his waking consciousness, the last whispered words of "Goodnight, Coyote," and "Goodnight, Father," followed by the comforting grip of a strong hand on his before his world was swallowed by shadow.
But it was a comforting shadow, encompassing him like a soft blanket. He felt safe in it, he didn't feel sick anymore. His whole body surged with a sort of numb calmness relaxing him until he felt like he didn't even need to breath….
…breath…
Can't…..breathe….
"Doctor, we're losing him!"
"Get the defib', stat!"
"Heh, you weren't expecting him to try to fight back, were you, Brawler?"
"…the sickly little punk did manage to catch me by surprise, General, but it looks like he's paying for it now."
" Just remember what will happen to you if you let him die."
"Yes, General…"
"HEY, IT LOOKS PRETTY STRESSED OUT IN HERE! ANYONE WANT ANY JAZZ?"
"ROMEO WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN HERE?! GET OUT!"
Coyote's eyes snapped open, starring in surprise up at the brown-skinned, glasses wearing man leering over him. "W-w-what? Am…am I dead? God, is that you?...what happened to your beard?!"
"No talking during examination, subject CT-325," he intoned, jabbing a needle into his arm.
The jaeger winced, "wh-who's CT-325?...who are you?!" A rising panic filled his chest as he began to regain enough of his senses to realize that he wasn't in the same room he went to sleep in the night before.
The soft yellow wallpaper was replaced by sterile white paint, the worn floorboards turned to over-scrubbed, lemon-y scented tile of the same color. He could see himself in the large mirror that spanned the right wall, he could see the metallic hospital bed he was currently strapped down to, and the flock of lab coats clustered around him like snow-colored vultures waiting for him to die.
Sweat slicked back his light brown hair as terror seized his being, heart pounding, he stared up at the doctor taking a blood sample on his arm. ""Wh-wh-who are you?! Where am I?! Wh-wh-where's Marshal Pentecost and Crimson and Striker and Cherno and Gipsy? !"
The man straightened up. Casting his gaze over to a (very) short woman sitting in the corner, idly reading a gun magazine. "He's still talking, Brawler Yukon, what shall I do?"
"Let him talk," she responded in a bored tone, stroking one of her dark grey braids, "he probably doesn't remember what happened, and is most likely very scared and confused." At this point the magazine fell to the floor, revealing the jagged scar cutting across her face and the fresh, multi-colored bruise darkening one of her piercing green eyes.
"B-Brawler? You must be a jaeger, then," a small light of hope filled his eyes, because he could trust his own kind, right? "P-please….I-I-I don't know what's going on."
She kicked the rolling chair away from her, striding over in her combat boots and bomber jacket. Standing, she barely reached over five feet, but her slightly stocky build made up for it. The doctors scattered like frightened sheep as she approached Coyote. "So you don't remember how I got this, then?" She pointed to her bruise, scowling.
Coyote shyly shook his head.
This caused her to smile. "Good….er-I mean, such tragedy, really. I'm sorry, kid, but you won't be under the Marshal's care anymore."
"B-but I'm his jaeger," he defended weakly, "where is he? What happened to my family?!"
For some reason Brawler didn't look as sad as she should of, "I'm really sorry, but your 'family': Pentecost, Gipsy Danger, Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon, and that Australian jerk…well…..they're all dead. "
His heart stopped for a few seconds as his world slowly began to crumble around him, "Dead…..dead like Yancy?"
Her frosty grin lit up her whole face, "yes, dead like Yancy."
