A/N: Sorry for not updating this for so long, but I was in France on a school trip for a month and I had a staph infection in the lining of my stomach before that, so I haven't exactly been able to do much. Shout at me as much as you like, cos I deserve it, but until you do: here's the next chapter. And the next part of If Things Had Changed is being worked on as we speak. I promise.

Disclaimer (you probably knew this was coming): I do not own Doctor Who, I would have a very different life it that were true.

Chapter 4

"Rose Tyler, what is the meaning of this?" The door banged shut as a voice shrilled.

"Mum? What are you doing here? I thought you were going to be at working all day." So this was the famous Jackie. John groaned. He had not been looking forward to this. He shifted further into his armchair, trying to make himself as small as possible.

"Well I had a break so I thought I'd come and pay you a visit seeing as you never come round anymore. And now I know why. Who is this? Were you going to tell me about your boyfriend, huh? A mother deserves to know, Rose Marion Tyler, so don't you snicker at me!"

"I think you got the wrong message, Mum." John chanced a glance at her, "He's my friend." She laughed. Jackie stared at her with her mouth hanging open.

"Then how do you explain that!" Her mother gestured to the position they were in: Rose perches on his knee, typing away, while he scribbled on a piece of paper.

"Er... We're writing?" John tried.

"I'm sure that's what all the kids call it these days." Jackie grumbled as her hands rose to her hips, "Don't you try anything, Mister! I'll know if you do."

"Mum!" Rose groaned.

"Why don't you and Donna get together, dear? I saw her on my way here! Did you know she was getting married?"

"Yes Mum, I-"

"Lee's a sweet man, but not a person I'd expect her to go for, but when you know you know. That's why mum always said-"

"MUM!"

"Yes, sweetheart?" Jackie paused, smiling at her daughter, "What is it?"

"We're just friends." John nodded rigorously.

"Fine, but I'm still watching you." This was directed at John. He gulped.

"Oh hello, Jackie!" Then Ms. Smith thought it would be a good time to intervene. Oh, John could kiss her!

"Sarah Jane Smith, it's good to see you. Do you know who this," Jackie struggled for a moment, "this man is?" Sarah Jane laughed.

"Of course I do. This is John Smith, he's a writer and one of my best customers," She paused, "though he has been distracting my best worker as well." With this she gave a pointed look to Rose. The two in the armchair blushed beet red. Jackie glared at John.

"Well then, Mr. Smith, don't you dare hurt my daughter. If you do, I'll make you wish you had never set foot in the shop."

"Yes ma'am." He hurried.

"Mum!" Rose hid her face in her hands, "You better be planning on getting a whole lot of things if you keep this up!"

"Rose, sweetheart, why would I do that?" She was answered with a glower.

"I need to get back to work." And with that Rose ran back to the counter.

"Was it something I said?" Jackie asked Sarah Jane, "Rose doesn't normally get like this. Should I be worried?"

Ms. Smith shook her head, "I don't think it's worth the time. Just," She paused, "Just try and talk to her on her own. Buy something, you at least owe her that. Now I should be going back to work now. I'll talk to you later, Jackie. Do you want to do lunch sometime?"

"Yeah, 'course. Saturday sound good?" A nod, "See you then, dear." She picked out a blueberry scone and a black tea to go before glancing at Rose one more time. Then she left, taking care to glare at John as she passed the window.

That woman terrified him, she had reminded him a little bit of Mrs. Bennet just then. He shrunk further into his chair and sipped at his coffee, trying to shake the chills that were still running down his back. It was easy to respect Jackie, just as it was to respect Rose. Tyler women were wonderful, but man were they scary when they wanted to be. Maybe he should get back to his story, it wasn't like he had gotten very far with it anyway.

"Sorry about that." He looked up from his laptop,

"Huh?" Rose laughed at him,

"My mother can be a little overbearing at times. Well, very. There's nothing little about her."

"She said something about a Donna, that wouldn't have been whom you got the character name from, hmm?" He raised an eyebrow as he broke off a piece of muffin and stuck it in his mouth.

"Guilty." Rose put her hands up in surrender before snagging a piece of the snack as well, "I should be getting back to work. If you want, I could introduce her to you."

"Who, Donna?"

"Yeah, of course. And if you meet Donna, that means you'll end up meeting Shareen. Be warned, she comes off very," She thought for a moment, "Well, she comes off very strong... and that's putting it gently." John laughed and she continued, "If you manage to write another five hundred words by the end of the hour, I'll give you a free snack, yeah?"

"Brilliant!"

"Then get to it, Doc."

"You aren't seriously going to call me that."

"Watch me."

The world was running out of time. Tick tock, tick tock. The clock was spinning faster and faster towards its end. Jack had to hurry because something was headed their way whether he was ready or not. It was coming and the Earth needed a hero. All of its usual ones had been changed or didn't even exist, the Slayer was just an ordinary girl, the entire Winchester family had died in that fateful fire, a certain highly functioning sociopath was in prison and his doctor hadn't recovered from the war. S.H.E.I.L.D. had never been created and you already know what had happened to our favorite time traveling alien and companion. Jack was the only one left. The only man who remembered and boy was he going to pay for it.
