Part II :)!
It was the moment of truth for Sam. Haley watched the small teenager look towards the bleak building. "Ready to go Sam? I don't think we're just supposed to stay in the car." She said lovingly.
Sam took a deep breath, "Uhm Is Brooke busy?"
Haley gave her a curious look, "What do you mean?"
She shook her head, "Nevermind I'll just call her."
Haley sighed, not knowing if this is how things were supposed to turn out. She didn't protest, instead she let the teenager do as she wished.
Brooke heard her phone ring , she had been talking with one of her employees, but excusesd herself and went into her office, "Hi Baby." Her voice exuded compassion, and it eased Sam's nerves instantly.
"Hey Brooke. I just wanted to let you know that I'm here and I'm gonna go in now." She didn't really have a reason for calling, she just needed an excuse to hear Brooke's soothing voice.
"Alright, well, remember what I told you this morning. Okay?"
"Yeah." Sam responded.
"Promise?"
"I promise."
"I Love You Sam."
"Thanks Brooke. Ba-bye."
"Bye sweetie. Good luck." Sam hung up the phone then looked at Haley "I'm ready."
….. ….. …..
Rebecca sat across from Haley and Sam. There was no hugs, no kisses. Just a weary smile from Rebecca, a scowl from Haley, and a pained look on Sam's face. Haley tried to hold Sam's hand, but Sam politely refused. The chatter of the other visitors and inmates swirled around them.
"Hey Sammy girl. How's it been?"
Sam cleared her throat, "I've been doing pretty good." Rebecca's face stayed blank. Sam tried to appease to her, "I, uhh, I got my grades up. I've been doing pretty good this quarter. You can even ask my Aunt Haley, she's my english teacher." Haley could tell Sam was trying to find approval in this woman, and it hurt her heart.
Rebecca blinked, "Good." She said a little too flatly for Sam's taste. Then looked at Haley and back at Sam, "So have you missed me?" She asked completely changing the subject, "Because I've missed you honey."
Sam looked at her enthralled by her response, "Really?"
Rebecca's face lit up, "We had such good times when you were little, right? And then when you came for that week, we had fun, right?"
Sam's shoulders slumped. She didn't have fun, there weren't that many good times. Was Rebbeca that blind?
"Yeah." She mumbled.
Sam looked back up, "So have you been doing okay? In here? Are they treating you well?"
Rebecca sighed, "Oh it has its ups and downs, but I'm okay here. I'm almost out! Just three more months."
Sam studied her. Her black hair now grayed was dishevelled. And she had gotten skinnier.
"Oh okay." Sam said.
Rebecca hesitated and moved in her seat a bit, "So, uhhh, Sam," She said trying to move past the small talk, "Do you umm, well did you bring me-" She looked at Haley who was staring her down and dared not finish the sentence. Sam nodded, as if to say "Yes I did.". She took out a folded envelope that was in her pocket and slid it to Rebecca who took it eagerly. She looked in it and frowned slightly.
The frown hurt Sam's heart, "It's, It's all I had….mom." She said at the look of disappointment written all over Rebecca's face. Haley turned to Sam, "Samantha what did you just give her?" She said firmly with a hand on her shoulder. Sam shrugged Haley's hand off, "None of your business." She answered.
"Watch it Sam." Haley warned her.
Rebecca rolled her eyes, ignoring Haley completely "Sam it's just, you know, not enough. I'll just have to ask someone else to come see me. I just thought with Brooke and Julian being rich and all you'd gimme something more hefty. But it's okay baby."
Sam's face contorted into anger, "What do you mean you'll have to ask someone else to see me?! That's, that's all fucking you cared about?!" Her voice went up an octave, causing some of the visitors to turn to their table.
Haley squeezed her hand, "Samantha calm down."
"Was it always about the damn money?" She said with eyes that bore into Rebbeca.
Rebecca looked at her sternly, "Young lady, if you were in my care, you would've been over my knee in a second. Don't you dare talk to me, your mother, like that."
Sam narrowed her eyes, her words were jagged, "Well thank God I'm not in your fucking care."
"Watch it little girl." Rebecca's face matched Sam's.
When did she decide to become so stern, and decide to act like she was a mother? These questions plagued Sam at that moment.
Her voice grew stronger, " If I were in your care, I'da been in a fucking foster home...again, 'cause you know you're in fucking prison. How can you take care of me from here? And if you weren't in damn prison, you would've been too busy selling your fucking drugs, or inhaling them like a fucking fiend."
Haley was not appreciating the language coming out of Sam's mouth, she knew she was trying to make a point. But they were coming dangerously close to her forcefully ending this meeting.
"And guess what mom?" She said mockingly.
"What?" Rebbeca responded menacingly, "Samantha, you are and always have been a WASTE of my time."
Haley stood up, "Alright! We're done here!" She grabbed Sam's hand, but Sam pulled away. "Stop!" She said. "Wait Aunt Haley."
Haley was at a loss, she let go and watched the rest unfold.
Sam bent in close to Rebbeca, so close she could see the wrinkles that were beginning to show on her face, Sam stayed quiet for a moment in this position, both glaring at one another.
"FUCK YOU." Sam spit at her in a low whisper.
Rebecca saw red, without a moment's pause she lifted her hand and slapped Sam heartily. The slap resounded across the room.
In an instant Haley got up and grabbed Rebecca by her collar, "Don't you touch her! Don't you dare touch her! You were never there for her! You did nothing for her, you bitch! Who do you think you are?!"
The guards separated the two women. Rebecca was escorted back. Sam held onto her cheek and watched as Rebecca was manhandled, but of course, she still kept the white envelope.
Haley and Sam were escorted by guards out of the jail.
Sam held in her tears as they drove back. Haley looked over and could tell she was trying to be strong, "I'm sorry this didn't turn out how you thought it would." She told her, "Some people just never learn."
Sam nodded her head. She didn't want to be with Haley, she didn't want to be with anyone. She wanted her blade, but that wasn't an option either. "I'm fine." She squeaked.
Sam was closing down. When they go to her house, Sam ran in and went straight to her room. Haley stayed and waited for Brooke to get home. When she explained everything to her, Brooke was about ready to fly off the handle, "That BITCH. She tricked Sam into giving her money, and then treated her like trash!"
She went straight into Sam's room not bothering to knock, "Sweetie." She said firmly.
Sam was at her desk writing furiously, "Brooke get out."
"Samantha, please don't do this."
"Do what?" She said turning around to face her.
"You're closing down. This is not okay."
"Get out! Get out! GET OUT!" She yelled.
Brooke got closer, but Sam pushed the chair back, Please mom. Leave." She said in a quieter tone. Brooke saw the pain in her eyes, and it hurt her to just leave, but they weren't going to get anywhere now.
"Fine." She said trying to hide her own anger.
Haley and Brooke spent some of the evening talking. Haley looked at her watch, it was already 6:30, "When's Michael and Julian coming home?"
Brooke pushed her hair back, "Michael's getting home at 8, and Julian's staying late tonight."
Haley gave Brooke a kiss on the forehead. "I have to go Brooke, but promise me you'll maintain your composure, you can't yell about Rebbeca to Sam."
"Hales I know." She said sounding tired.
…. … …..
Sam kept replaying the events in her head. She knew Rebecca's insults were made out anger, but to every insult there was a kernel of truth. It was driving her crazy. She threw her work across the room. She felt alone. Jack's phone got taken away, so she couldn't talk to him, not like his foster parents would let him either. She fell onto the bed kicking the covers off in anger. Worthless. Waste. Pointless. Stupid. Bitch. Everything swirled in her head. Wanting to hurt herself she stripped off her clothes and looked at herself in the mirror with just her bra and panties. She examined the cuts, and touched them gingerly. They no longer hurt, but oh man, did she ever want them to hurt. She changed into something more comfortable and paced across the room. She had to do something before she became self-destructive, the tears were falling freely. Everything was catching up to her. 'She stole everything from me." She thought, "She left me! And she acts like it's my fault!" Her thoughts were screaming at her. Her head was reeling. Everything in her room seemed like the perfect object to cut herself. She balled her hands into fists and grabbed at her hair. She had to get out of there.
She left her room to find an empty house. She saw the light in her mom's room. Suddenly emotions hit her like a ton of bricks, swallowing her pride she flung open the door, to find Brooke reading a book. Brooke put down her book and saw the flushed face and tear stained Sam.
"Mom?" She said in a faint squeak.
Brooke sat up and opened her arms, "Honey come here." She said beckoning her. Without a moment's hesitation Sam fell into her arms, positioning herself on Brooke's lap. Brooke held her and rocked her, soothing her, "Shhh. Shhh. It's okay Sam. Let it out. Go ahead." Sam let her broken sobs overcome her. "I'm sorry I screamed at you!" Sam said while crying. Brooke nodded looking down at her, "I know." She said sympathetically, "Don't worry."
Sam didn't care anymore she became an open book, she was precariously on the verge of regressing. But she maintained herself. "I didn't tell you everything today! I- I had an accident, I wet the bed, I did. I'm sorry!"
Brooke rocked her once more, "I know you did Sammy, there's nothing wrong with that, you had a nightmare. I understand. Don't be sorry. Don't be." Brooke was worried she would regress further. Sam buried herself in Brooke, "She said she'd spank me. She said I was a waste. She just, she just wanted money mom. She just wanted my money."
Brooke kissed the top of her head, "She won't touch you. She's wrong Sam. She's wrong, I promise you with all my heart, she's wrong."
Sam said nothing else. She just listened to her mother's comforting words, and let the pace of her mother's breathing move her. She put her thumb in her mouth and began to suckle. After some time, Sam had calmed down significantly, her sobs were now hiccups and sniffles, but Brooke had not let her go, and Sam did not make an effort to leave the comfortability of her mother's embrace. It was clear she had regressed at some point. Brooke looked down and she was still sucking her thumb. She brushed Sam's hair with her hand and massaged her back. Then she felt Sam touch her growing stomach, it was five months, but Brooke's stomach was not very big, to her excitement of course.
Brooke smiled, "Can't wait to meet the baby?" She asked Sam. She felt Sam shrug.
She took advantage of the moment and began to ask Sam more questions, "So you gave her money huh?"
Sam's thumb made her way out of her mouth, "Am I in trouble?" She asked her mom.
"Not this time." Brooke said with a smile on her face.
"Sweetheart, can I see your cheek?" Brooke slowly let her go and Sam still on her lap hesitantly showed Brooke where she got slapped. Brooke could see the faint redness, but luckily it wasn't bad enough for her to go down and strangle Rebecca. She noticed Sam's uneasiness, "Don't be embarrassed Sam, she's the one that should feel horrible right now, not you."
Brooke kissed her cheek, "If it was any worse I'd have to go down and kick her ass."
Sam smiled, "Yeah well I wanted to hit her too, but Aunt Haley beat me to it."
Brooke laughed imagining Haley fighting with Rebecca. Sam slid off Brooke's lap and just laid near her, "Is it okay to hate her?" She asked absentmindedly.
Brooke looked at her daughter, "Hate often ends up hurting you, than the person you hate. Trust me, I know."
"Well let's hope this feeling goes away." Sam muttered.
Brooke kept passing her hand through Sam's hair and cheek, "You'll be okay."
As Sam slowly started to fall asleep Brooke noticed what seemed like a small cut on Sam's thigh.
"Sam, what happened there?" She asked touching the cut. Suddenly awake, Sam pulled her short down, "It's just a cut. It's nothing."
Feeling self-conscious and in danger of being discovered, Sam got off the bed. "Mom, I'm, I'm gonna go to the restroom."
She went towards her bathroom and sat on the toilet. her emotions still reeling. She caught sight of one of Julian's new old-fashioned blades. Her body started to itch with temptation. "Just once more." She thought. Sam grabbed onto the blade and played with it in her hands. She swallowed hard trying to contain herself. She lifted up her shorts and put the blade to her thigh, but then lifted it back up. She couldn't do it anymore. She was stronger than this. But it was too late, Brooke had saw her with the blade in hand, placing it on her thigh, "Samantha!" She yelled. Instinctively, Sam dropped the blade.
"I-I was just looking at dad's blade, is all."
'You idiot, you forgot to lock the door.' Her mind yelled.
Brooke's mind was racing. Not giving her time to think, Brooke bent down and pulled the running short up to her underwear and saw the multitude of cuts across her thighs. Sam stood up trying to get away from Brooke, "MOM STOP." She said loudly.
Brooke was in shock. "Samantha have you been, have you been-cutting.." The words got stuck in her throat, "Oh my God."
Sam was about to leave through the door but Brooke grabbed onto her. "Let go!" She said.
Brooke held on tighter, and pulled Sam back into the bedroom, then pulled her shorts down. Sam was in shock. "What the hell?!"
Brooke, ignored Sam's indignant cry, and looked at her daughters small thighs, and saw the cuts criss crossed across the top of them.
"Sweetheart." Brooke's hands covered her mouth. Sam was about to pull her shorts back up, but suddenly Brooke's voice became steely, "Don't you dare." She said. She got closer to her and then sat her down on the bed, "Where else?" She said trying to control herself.
Sam looked at ehr pleadingly, "I don't do it anymore! I promise! I stopped, I won't do it again, believe me!"
Brooke blinked once, "That's not what it looked like right now."
It hurt to see Sam so frantic, especially after what had happened, but she had to be strong, for her, "Where. ELSE. Samantha?"
Reluctantly Sam lifted up her sleeves, and showed her. "Sammy take off your shirt." She whispered.
"Why?" Sam said embarrassed that she already had her shorts taken down,
"because I need to make sure you haven't hurt yourself anywhere else."
"Brooke, please don't make me." Sam said with big eyes.
"Sweetie, if you don't do it, then I'll have to do it myself."
Sam panicked, and in her panic she couldn't get herself to move her hands. Brooke sighed and went over kneeling down then lifting Sam's shirt off, "Lift your arms Sammy" She ordered gently. "I'm not a kid." Sam muttered, but Brooke was not in the mood for defiance, "NOW." She said firmly.
Sam wouldn't do it. "I don't wanna." She said looking at Brooke. For a moment Brooke let go of her shirt, "Sammy, please don't make this harder than it has to be. I'm trying to help you."
The sincerity in her voice made Sam give in. She lifted her arms and felt her shirt come right off. Brooke stood her up and began inspecting for other cuts.
"When's Michael getting here?" She asked painfully conscious of her partial nudity.
Brooke looked back at her surprised where Sam's priorities were. "In an hour." Brooke continued her task as tears fell down her face, they were all older cuts, and only one or two of the cuts seemed fresh. "Oh my God, Sammy…..My little girl." She said putting her hands across the cuts.
"Mom I wasn't going to do it today. I promise. I really wasn't." Sam said coming close to crying again. Hearing her mom cry was not easy, knowing she caused it was worse. "No, I'm sorry Sammy."
Sam nodded wildly, "No, no, no! Stop. Brooke it's not your fault, it's not! I stopped. i didn't even do it today!"
Sam looked at her mom in a trance, but was snapped out of it when she felt Brooke lead her back to the bed.
"Stay here." Her voice was no nonsense. Brooke came back with Neosporin and put it on certain cuts. Then she came back with alcohol. Sam saw it and tried to steel herself, "Brooke that's gonna hurt. Where are you gonna put it?" She whined.
Brooke bent down and put alcohol on a piece of cotton.
She looked at her daughter, "On this one." She said pointing to her most recent cut, "It's pretty deep Sam. It'll only sting a little."
"Mom no, please." Sam said in a quiet plea.
"Sorry sweetheart."
She cringed as she felt the sting of the alcohol, but Brooke opened a band-aid and carefully placed it on that one lone cut. She kept her eyes tightly shut, but opened them when she felt Brooke pat the side of her upper thigh.
Brooke opened the covers, "You're sleeping in here tonight."
"With you and dad?" She asked.
"Yes." She responded.
"Brooke I'm not a child!" Sam said loudly, "It's not even nine yet, and I can sleep by myself!"
"I know!" Brooke replied louder than expected. She took a deep breath, "Sam, you're tired. You've been through a lot today, and I just, I'd feel better if you slept in here tonight, okay?" Sam heard the tired yet terrified tone in Brooke's voice. She meekly nodded, not wanting to make things worse with Brooke, and hoping that Brooke believed her.
"Can I at least put my clothes back on?"
She saw as her mom picked up her shorts and shirt and hand them to her, "Go ahead."
Carefully Sam put on her clothes.
Brooke watched with her arms folded as Sam changed. There was worry written all over her face. Worry for her fifteen year old daughter. When Sam finished changing she slid into the sheets. Brooke walked over and then kissed her on the forehead, "We'll deal with this tomorrow. Okay?"
Sam nodded, "Fine." She replied.
Brooke came back to find Sam almost fully asleep. She placed the blanket and her teddy bear between her arms. "I'll be back later tonight to sleep okay?" She whispered maternally.
Sam only nodded, embarrassed, tired, and emotionally drained.
