"Olivia Marie Oliver!" Jade screeched. "You never ever do that to Mommy. You don't run into traffic!" She looks bewildered.
"Mommy Mommy Mommy!" Olivia cries. "Daddy!" Jade looks up and sees Beck on the other side of the road and she groans.
"Okay, darling, I know. You can speak to Daddy later." Jade struggles to lift her daughter, because she's arching her back and screaming. "Stop!"
"No Mommy!" Olivia yells. Eventually, Jade gets her home, and she's sat on the naughty step.
"Do you understand why?" Jade asks after a while. Olivia scowls.
"No!" Jade gives her a warning glance.
"No, Mommy."
"That's better. You're here because you absolutely must never run into the road. You could get hurt, okay?" Jade makes her sit through a half hour of Max And Ruby: Road Safety! It bored Jade but she felt the need to install danger into her fearless daughter. After it was done, Liv smiles at her Mom expectantly.
"Daddy now?" Jade wavers. She wants to say no, but she knows that's the cruel thing to do, so she punches in Beck's number reluctantly and puts the phone on loud speaker.
"Hi?" Beck says on the other end. Olivia squeals.
"Mommy Mommy! Daddy here!" Jade smiles.
"Hi, Beck. Olivia wanted to speak to you," Jade says pleasantly.
"Oh, I'm glad you called," he says, regret evident in his voice. "How's my princess?"
"Good Daddy!" After Olivia has a whole host of "interesting" things to tell him, Jade takes the phone and presses it off of loud speaker.
"You need to see her," Jade states, nibbling on her thumbnail. "Next Thursday." Beck swallows noisily, and breathes out in relief.
"Yes," he breathes. "Is she okay?"
"She ran into traffic today so be careful, try to teach her..."
"Why?"
"Why? Oh, she wanted something on the other side."
"Oh."
"I'll drop her off about two."
"That's fine."
"Lov-" Jade stops breathing for a moment. "See you."
"See you..."
"Hey, I'm home!" Cat calls into her noisy home. She smiles. "Everything okay?" Jade looks up and nods.
"Yeah. We're good. Playing with..uh, Baby Born." Cat giggles.
"Yes, I see. How fun," she walks over to the kitchen.
"We're having pasta bake for dinner, it'll be ready in about an hour, alright?" Jade nods, and resumes playing with Olivia. She smiles and tickles her and tries so hard to be a mom. Cat is proud.
Later, at the dinner table, Jade pushes her food around. She looks up. "Olivia's seeing B-E-C-K on Thursday."
"Oh, really? How exciting! You should tell her." Jade wrinkles her nose.
"Are you sure? What if the plan falls through?"
"Hope, Jade, hope." Jade nodded and turned to her daughter. "You can do it."
"KK. Liv. You'll be seeing Daddy on Thursday! Three more sleeps!" Jade smiles warmly. "Are you excited?" Olivia is bouncing up in her seat.
"Daddy, Daddy, Daddy!" She cries in glee. The two women exchange glances over her head. Cat is the first to talk.
"Daddy missed you, too."
"Mama will miss you on Thursday, but Daddy will be so happy. Do you want to take Dolly?"
"Baba born!" Olivia corrects a giggling Jade.
"Are you taking Baby Born?" She nods excitedly. They finish dinner in a comfortable silence, each taking careful precision to eat properly. The adults worry about Thursday, but Liv can only think about her daddy.
Thursday rolls around without a hitch, and Jade is cursing herself for arranging this. On the outside, she holds her daughter's little hands carefully, but on the inside, her anger is boiling her blood. Temper never was her strong point. She raps smartly on the door, sighing as it takes awhile for it to open. When she hears footsteps, Jade kisses Olivia, and tells her to be a good girl. Beck flings open the door.
"Hey, Jade. Hey, sweetheart. Come in."
"I'll pick her up at about six?" Beck nods, helping his daughter up the last step. "Be good, Olivia. Beck, don't mess this up."
"Not for the world," he promises. "Not for the world."
The hours seem to slow when Olivia isn't around. Jade was itching to pick up her baby girl at three, just an hour later. It irked Cat. "Calm down! She's fine. In good hands, you know that." Jade nods, but still couldn't wait. Cat shooed her out of the door at five forty five, as soon as possible. Jade smiled because it was typical.
"Be civil!" Cat muttered. "I'm sure you will.." Jane anxiously drummed her hands on the steering wheel. Drum-de-drum-de-drum. Finally, at five to, Jade can't take it, so gets out. She's greeted by Olivia, fiddling with the lock and laughing.
"Olivia, why were you opening the door? Where's Daddy?" Jade peers round the door frame, picking up Livvy's hand.
"Daddy said me could. Lounge."
"You shouldn't open doors, Liv. But good girl." Beck ambles into the hall, smiling and in a daze.
"She's a good girl." She nods.
"We better get going. Say goodbye." Jade instructed.
"Bye bye! Love youyou.."
It broke his stony heart to see his daughter waving good bye to him, but he only let the emotion show when he was back inside.
"Tough, huh?" The gnarled old man asked. He tried to smile, and shook his head. Jade called all the shots here, he knew. He just prayed his little girl would be back in his arms very soon.
"Very tough." Beck sighs, shaking his head so his hair moves. "So very tough."
A/N:
I'm really sorry this took so long. I just had a lot to do, and didn't have the time for working this out as it's hard to write. Thanks for your patience. I really hope it's okay for you!
