"Al, I want to go scuba diving." Piper yelled from the bathroom the next morning. The room went completely silent and Piper had to hold back from laughing. Alex liked to swim but she wasn't to sure she was going to jump off a boat with her in a wet suit with a tank strapped to her back.

"O...Okay..You don't need me do you?"

"Oh come Alex. You might enjoy it."

More silence. Piper bit her lower lip and tried not to laugh. She was going to get Alex onto that boat if it was the last thing she did this vacation.

She walked out of the bathroom to the sight of Alex sprawled on her back across the bed with a pillow over her face. "Why is everything so fucking bright?"

"Because the sun is up. And so should you be. Are you going to spend this entire vacation sleeping?"

"No. Just the times that the sun is awake."

"Alex. Get up!" Piper jumped on the bed and ripped the pillow from Alex's face. She laughed as her girlfriend squeezed her eyes shut, as if that would help darken the room. Piper ran her hands down Alex's hips and tickled her.

Alex squirmed and let out a little shriek. "Okay okay I'm up! Fuck."

Laughing, Piper threw a bathing suit at her. "Hurry up. We have to get to the boat in a half an hour.

Alex groaned but put on the suit and a pair of black shorts and a t-shirt over it.

20 minutes later they were sitting on the back of a boat, Alex downing her third cup of coffee, waiting for a few others before they could leave the doc.

Their instructor, Rehendhi, was standing in front of all of them going over a few rules. "Always jump with a buddy. You never know what you could run into down there. Don't push your self. If you aren't a strong swimmer, don't go so deep that you will run out of stamina on the way back up. You only have a limited amount of air so pay close attention to it.

We are just going to stay really close to this boat today, as this is a first time for all of you. Please stay with your partner and don't go to far. And most importantly, have fun."

With that, they all got to the edge of the boat and one by one entered the water. The wet suits made the water a desirable temperature. Alex stayed right by her shoulder and side by side the girls went under the water.

The experience was like no other. The fish were vibrant, the water crystal clear. This wasn't the first time they had gone diving, and Alex was slowly seeming to enjoy it. Or slowly waking up. It was hard to tell.

Alex's face lit up as she pointed over Piper's shoulder. Turning around, she saw a medium sized fish that she swore could be seen miles away. It's body was a neon blue with orange for it's fins and a yellow under belly. It was gorgeous.

They spent the next hour playing in the water and when everyone's air started running thin, they spent the rest of the afternoon out of the wet suits jumping off the boat and swimming.

Piper screamed as Alex ran off the back of the boat and right on to her, knocking her under water. "Bitch." She laughed as Alex stuck her tongue out at her and gave her a kiss then swam a few feet away. Her attention was taken, suddenly, by a bird that was circling a school of fish, some hundred yards away. Piper stared at her. Alex was beautiful. That was apparent that anyone could tell. But right now, with her hair soaking wet, and her attention elsewhere, she was just stunning. The way she focused on something interesting, how her face was when she didn't have that sly grin on. It was the same thing when she slept. A look of pure innocense. Piper wanted to look at that face for the rest of her life.

Which brought Piper to a roadblock. She had always envisioned the white picket life and little kids. She had never imagined it with a women, when she first started thinking of the future. She never thought of it with a man either though. She hadn't cared. As long as she loved the other person, it hadn't mattered what gender they were. But now she wanted it with Alex. Had wanted it with Alex for a long time now.

Alex had made it clear all those years ago that she was not the settling down type. She wanted to be with Piper, that was blatently obvious. But she wasn't the kind of person to walk down the aisle in a white dress.

"Alright, it's time we head back now." Rehendhi was saying. One by one everyone from the group climbed back onto the boat and sat down. Alex wrapped a towel around the two of them and sat close together."

"You two make a wonderful couple," A girl with bleach blonde hair and piercing blue eyes commented from the seat across from them.

Alex smiled her thousand watt smile. "Thank you. The name's Alex. This is Piper."

"Laura." She smiled as they shook hands. "How long have you been together?"

Alex hesitated. It wasn't such a simple question. Piper spoke up. "We were together a long time ago for about two years. We had a...falling out," Piper chose her words carefully as to not upset Alex. "We found each other again a few years later. It was a real rocky time for both of us and we tried again but failed. It wasn't until about a year after that, that we slowly started talking again. We were able to repair the relationship and it's been about five years now. And going strong." Piper kissed the top of Alex's hand as the brunette tried to hide the grin that had formed on her face.

"That's great. I'm glad you were able to work it out. My girlfriend and I are on the outs right now. After ten years things began to get a little tough and she needed 'space' or whatever." Laura sighed. "I came here with my best friend in hopes I could forget about her for a little while. It was my friends idea, of course. I wanted to wallow in my self pity and a pint of ice cream watching soap operas."

"It gets better." Alex commented. Piper glanced at her. The pained look on her face gave her away. It never did get better for Alex.

"That's what I've been told. Personally I plan to give her as much space as she needs and hope she comes back. It's been about two months and she started texting me again right before I left. I am taking that as a good sign."

Piper reached forward and rubbed the girls knee. "That's good. Always good to stay hopeful."

Before they knew it, they were back at the dock. "Where are you guys staying?" Laura asked them as they exited the boat and got back onto dry land.

"At the cottages, just over there." Piper pointed to her right. "How about you?"

"There is a resort down the road from here. That is where my friend and I are. Would you like to meet up for breakfast tomorrow morning maybe?"

"That sounds fun. See you then."

With that the girls parted. Hand in hand, Alex and Piper walked back to their room to get ready for dinner.
