"What is she doing here?" Jade hisses, covering Jasper's head as if not liking the fact that Tori was even breathing the same air as her baby was. Cat stands and takes Jade's hand, and her face creases in confusion.
"We're having coffee, Jade," she states, smiling at Olivia. "Hi, Olivia! How's my favorite girl, then? Are we good? Yeah!" Cat reaches out and picks up Olivia who kicks her legs happily.
"That's Olivia?" Tori asks. "How precious! I haven't seen her since she was a baby. Oh, Jade, she's gorgeous." And while Jade was still angry, Jade felt her temper ebb away and she smiled at her little girl. She'd never be able to resist compliments, and she loved her little girl and little boy so much. She smiled sadly at Tori.
"Yes, she's my little doll," Jade says. She'd failed them in life so far and hadn't been a good mother, but she was determined she would be and a good friend to Cat. How could she, when she begrudged her one other friend? In the midst of things, Jade had forgotten her good news.
"Would you like a coffee, Jade?" Jade nods.
"Please,"
"And you, little madam? Would you like something?" Cat asks the child in her arms, who was intently staring at Tori. "Livvy? Come on, tell me what you want."
"Water, please! And a biccuit?" She begs, doe eyes glittering, and eyelashes fluttering.
"What does Mommy say?" Cat laughs. Jade smiles.
"Yes, that's alright."
And as they talk over coffee, it's almost nice. Cat holds Jasper and he happily gurgles and kicks his little legs in his blue sleeper, and Olivia sits on Tori's lap, asking her many many questions.
"You're Mommy's friend?" Tori glances at Jade for a moment, unsure, and Jade laughs.
"Yes, baby, she's Mommy's friend."
"And Aunt Kitty's?"
"Yes," Tori smiles at the little girl.
"I have some news, guys," Jade grins. "Don't we, Livvy?"
"Yeah!"
"What is it?" Cat asks, excited.
"Yeah, what?" Tori asks.
"I have a new job! I'm a piano teacher!"
"Oh, wow! Congratulations, Jade," Tori said, and Cat jumped up to hug her.
And while they celebrated, they had no clue what was looming around the corner..
"Stop worrying, Cat, I'll be fine!" Jade laughs, doing up the buttons on Olivia's coat. She would drop Olivia off at nursery and then go to her first lesson, where she would teach an eight year old girl how to play. Then she would do two more hour long lessons, pick up Olivia, go back to Cat's and pick up Jasper just in time for Cat to go to work and then go home where Beck would just be getting home from his work at a building society.
"How are you not worrying?"
"Because you do enough for the both of us."
"Yes, well, I have reason enough, don't I?" Cat snaps. "Sorry."
Her first three lessons went well and she rushed off to the nursery. By the time she was on the front path, she could hear Olivia's screams. "Oh, boy..." She braced herself for having to speak to the nursery staff, but looking at her phone, she just didn't have time.
"Hi, Mrs West, do come in," the nursery group leader said.
"Hiya," Jade said, picking up Olivia from the mat on the floor. "I'd love to talk but I have to pick up my little boy,"
"Oh, but Olivia has some issues we have to talk about, or it's just not going to work." Sighing and stifling a yawn, Jade faces the teacher.
"What is the problem?"
"Well, Olivia seems to have some attachment issues. She wouldn't stop asking for you or her Aunt Cat, and she wouldn't settle when we said you'd be back. Maybe it's nerves, but it seems more than that."
"I'm sorry about that. She hasn't really had other carers outside of her family. I'll talk to her. Anything else?"
"Yes," she continued, "Olivia refused to let us clean her knee up when she fell over. Her tights are ripped a little and her knees are still bloody, but she wouldn't let us go anywhere near us and your phone was off."
"Yes, I was at work! What about the emergency numbers?"
"It was busy."
"Well, I'm sorry, but that's a bit pathetic. She's three - just tell her what you're going to do."
"We're sorry, Mrs West, but we cannot do that, it's against our rules." Jade shifts Olivia to her other hip and sighs impatiently.
"I need to get home to clean her knees and get her baby brother. We'll have to discuss more in the morning. Goodbye, Mrs Woods."
"Wait, Mrs W-"
"I don't have time! Goodbye."
And as Jade rushes off, trying to be in two places at once, she wonders what she got herself into.
"Cat, you were supposed to leave your phone on! Olivia's skinned knees, I'll just clean them up and then I'll be off." She pauses, confused. There was no sound. "Cat?"
She steps lightly up the stairs and knocks on Cat's bedroom door. She hears footsteps and scrambling. "I'm coming in, okay?"
"No! No, stay out, Jade.." Cat giggles, and Jade opens the door. When she sees what's behind the door, she bursts out laughing, and is glad she left Olivia downstairs.
Cat, only in her underwear, and Robbie behind her, also half naked, looking very embarrassed.
With a laugh, Jade takes a look over them both. "Well, well, well...look at you! Dirty stop outs, you are! And you're supposed to be looking after a wee baby, too."
While Jade laughs now, she wouldn't be laughing in the very distant future, because she didn't know that from the beginning, she was destined for disaster.
