Mutants of the Mansion

Chapter 26

Sorry about the huge delay, guys. You know how bad I am at breaking laptops. Hopefully, a desktop won't die as easily.

(Jubilee)

"I don't understand. Why are we trying to hear their conversation?"

"Because they may say something interesting!"

"Why not just ask them?" I sighed and placed a hand on Laura's head.

"They kicked us out of the room. They don't want us to hear."

"Then why are we trying to listen?" I groaned and hit my head lightly against the wall. "Also, how are 2 cups and a piece of string going to enable us to listen?" Better not ask about childhood.

"A lot of kids did this when they were young. Trust me, it works." I grinned, taping the cup to the wall. I put my ear to it and waited.

"-Can't keep her here!" Victory! I smiled broadly and gave Laura a thumbs-up. She rolled her eyes.

"Who said that I'm keeping her here at all? Besides, I don't think you have any authority over her." It's been a while since people argued over me. I shifted away from the cup a bit so that Laura could listen, too.

"I'm the only person capable of being her legal guardian!"

"Yeah, because trying to kill people totally makes you capable." That made her smile.

"How about I put the suit on and we go a few rounds?" Okay, they might be actually fighting over me. I cringed at the thought.

"That has to be the worst idea that I've ever heard." The approaching sound of heels almost made me panic. I pushed myself up And pulled Laura up when she gave me a confused look. "Jubilee!"

"Come on!" I grinned, sprinting down the hall. After a second, I heard Laura following me.

"JUBILATION LEE, GET BACK HERE RIGHT NOW."

"Well, she's angry." I smiled at my sister.

"I've dealt with her before. Think that we can sneak out of here?"

"Most likely."

"Can I say bye to Tony first?" The taller girl nodded, grabbed my hand as we rounded a corner and pulled me into a small room. "Geez Laura, I didn't know you liked me this much." The response I got that time was my mouth being covered. I was tempted to lick it. Although that would get me clawed. As soon as the heels stormed past and faded away, We left the room and ran back the way we came. Tony was stood in the doorway, looking slightly defeated.

"There you are, kid!" He smiled, lifting me into a hug. "I see that you two escaped." I just shrugged.

"I've done it before. Look, I'm actually going to head back to Manhattan with Laura."

"Escaping the wrath of the White Queen?" I nodded. "Can I join you?" I just smiled and hugged him again.

"Thanks for taking care of me, Tony. And for the upgrades."

"It's just been nice to have somebody else around." I have to admit, it was hard to let go. "Need any help getting past the Ice Queen?" It shouldn't be too hard. When Frost is pissed, she doesn't really pay attention.

"We could just take the elevator." I grinned and nodded to Laura, then gave Tony one last hug.

"Don't forget to visit."

"Why would I forget?" I managed to stop myself yelling in surprise when my friend grabbed the back of my coat and pulled me into the elevator. I have to admit, I don't really want to leave. It's been loads of fun. But if I don't solve this once and for all, it's never going to leave. And now that everybody knows that I'm still alive, they'll want me back. I think. I hope. "Do you have 2 helmets this time?" I asked as we got outside.

"I don't have anywhere to put a second helmet." I just rolled my eyes and caught the helmet she tossed to me.

"Just be thankful of your healing." As soon as I got it on and sat on the bike, Laura was off. I was almost falling off for a minute. "Give a little warning next time?!"

"I saw Emma about to leave the building."

"That doesn't mean you can just drive off before I'm barely on the bike!"

"Just suck it up." I sighed and pressed my forehead into her back. This is gong to be a really long journey. Especially if we get stopped. And I don't want to fall asleep again. Waking up with your hands tied around someone is not a good feeling. "Do you have a plan for when we get back?"

"They were all in the room, right?" I got a 'hm' instead of a yes. That kinda makes things easier. "Hopefully, they'll try and get me before I get off the bike."

"What do you mean 'hopefully'."

"Then I won't have to go through the tricky tasks of luring them out."

"You mean 'we', right?"

"You can't help me with this one, Laura. My problem and I'm going to solve it." She just 'hm'ed again and focused on the road. Yes, it's a really stupid plan. But it's the best shot I have. It's best if only I get hurt.

(Third)

It was late at night when the dull roar of a motorcycle alerted the only three people awake that their two awaited girls were finally back. Although to a half-asleep Wolverine and Storm, they barely registered it. Kitty, however, jumped up from her seat and ran upstairs. Only the flexing of the couch jolted Wolverine awake.

"Whassat?" He mumbled, sitting up and stretching. "Kitty?" Seconds later, the dull roar was replaced by s single shot and the screeching of towers and metal colliding with the exterior wall. That woke everybody up. Storm and Wolverine were the first outside, finding Laura leant against the wall, wincing in pain and pressing her hands against a slowly closing wound on her side. "Laura, what happened?" She glanced at Wolverine, who was kneeling next to her and lifting her up.

"I'm not entirely sure. I was driving into the yard with Jubilee, and somebody fired a gun at us. I lost control." Both adults perked up at the name and looked at each other. "She got me out from under the bike and ran off with somebody following."

"Any idea of who?" She shook her head and lifted her now red hands away from the wound. "You alright?"

"I should be. Can't say the same for my bike, though." Wolverine let himself chuckle And let his clone stand on her own feet.

"That means the assailant is out there." Storm confirmed, looking back at Gambit and Rogue, who has just come outside. "Check who we're missing."

It makes me sad to say this. There is only going to be one more chapter and then an epilogue. Been at this for over a year. It's sad that I have to end it, but nothing can go on forever.
