Chapter 17:

Chris looked up as the she heard the locks click and the door swing open, finding herself face to face with the man that was in the wedding photos that where on her sister's desk.

"Hi" she said

"Hey" Scotty replied

"Um, is Lilly here?"

Scotty shook his head "no she's out with some friends"

"Oh"

"I'm Scott her husband, but everyone calls me Scotty" he said, holding out his hand.

Chris shook it "hi, I am Christina, her sister but I suppose you already know that"

"Daddy, it's about to be your favourite part, the bit where Woody and Buzz are at Pizza Planet" Laura called out as she followed her father down the hallway to the front door, coming to stand beside him.

"Ok baby, I'll be there in a minute"

Laura nodded "who are you?" she asked bluntly, staring up at Chris.

Christina looked at Scotty, unsure of what she should say. Scotty simply bent down and picked his daughter up "this is Christina"

"Hi" Laura said happily, waving at her "do you want to watch Toy Story with us? Daddy can make more popcorn 'cause Matthew and James ate it all"

"Ah…no thank you sweetie, I was just about to leave"

Laura shrugged "Ok goodbye"

Scotty smiled at his daughter and kissed her cheek "why don't you go and get another packet of popcorn out of the cupboard and I'll be there in a few minutes to put it on" he suggested and he lowered her back to the floor.

"Ok Daddy"

"She's gorgeous, looks just like Lilly did when she was younger"

Scotty nodded "yeah, I lucked out"

"Look, I don't want to cause trouble between you and my sister, so I'll just go"

"Do you want me to tell her that you stopped by?"

Chris sighed and handed him an envelope "can you just give her this, tell her the phone number of where I'm staying is in there and she can call me if she wants"

Scotty nodded and took the envelope from her "sure, I'll give it to her"

"Thanks, I know that she probably told you about our history…frankly when you said she wasn't here I was expecting you to shut the door in my face"

Scotty fingered the envelope in his hands and sighed "yeah she did, but know that although Lil wouldn't say, that she misses you. I just hope that you can work something out"

Chris nodded again "that's all I want….thanks Scotty"

"No problem"

He watched as she turned and walked back down the footpath, before he closed the door.

Scotty looked up from his book as Lilly pushed open the bedroom door, looking exhausted but content.

"Hey Baby, how was your girls night?" he asked, dog-earing the page he was up too.

Lilly smiled as she kicked off her shoes, coming over to sit on the bed beside him "good, we talked about Lindsey's wedding plans, you know, a lot of girl talk"

Scotty chuckled "I am glad you had a good time, you deserve it"

"What about your night, what did you and the kids get up too?" Lilly asked

"Watch a few movies and ate popcorn"

"Sounds like fun, wish I'd stayed" Scotty sighed heavily and Lilly frowned "what's wrong Scotty?"

"Lil you gotta promise not to get mad at me"

Lilly knew any sentence that Scotty started with 'you gotta promise not to get mad at me' was bound to get her exactly that, mad at him.

"What did you do?" she asked him, trying to keep the frustration out of her voice.

Scotty paused, as if weighing up what exactly to tell her "your sister stoped by the house"

"She what?"

"Lil, I know your upset with her but I really just think she just wants to talk to you"

Lilly shook her head and stood up, starting to pace back and forth, her anger spiralling out of control "What the hell Scotty, why did you talk to her?" she said angrily, trying to keep her voice down as not to wake the kids.

"Cause she's your sister Lil" Lilly opened her mouth to rebut but Scotty was quicker "and don't give me that crap about her not being your family, she's your blood and that is one of the most important thing in this world. Now you can continue to deny it all you want Querida but I know you care about her. She left you something, she wants you to read this letter" He had enough and he was putting his foot down, Scotty took the envelope off the bedside table and held it out to her "just read it"

Lilly sighed, still glaring at her husband and eventually she reached out and took the manila envelope from him. She came back to the bed, sat down and tore open the envelope, taking out the letter, unfolded it and started to read.

Dear Lilly,

I know that I hurt you in the past and I want you to know how sorry I still am. I know it is no excuse but that night I was drunk, I would never have done that too you if I was sober. I can't tell you the amount of times over the past ten years that I started trying to write this letter, it was so hard, thinking about how betrayed you must of felt when you walked into your bedroom. You're my big sister, you looked after me when we were kids, always made sure that I had something to eat, even if it meant you went hungry, you made sure that I went to school with clean clothes and that Mum's boyfriends didn't hurt me.

You gave up your childhood to raise me Lil and I never thanked you for it. Instead I went and ruined everything by sleeping with Patrick. I don't blame you for hating me, I hate myself. I screwed up so badly and I don't expect you to ever forgive me but I wish you would, I miss my sister.

If you want to talk, I'll be staying at an SRO in Centre City called The Brewer. Call me there. Please.

Love Christina

Lilly read the note three more times before folding it and placing it back in the envelope and putting it away in the drawer beside the bed. She sighed and turned towards her husband.

"Do you really think that I should go and talk to her?"

Scotty nodded "I really think that you should give her a chance"

Lilly rolled her eyes and sighed again "I am still mad at you, you know"

"I know"

"But….I also know that you are only trying to help in your own annoying way" Scotty chuckled and leaned over and kissed her cheek.

Lilly smiled "I am going to go take a shower, but after, if I am still mad we can have make-up sex"

"Ok baby" Scotty replied with a chuckle

Lilly got off the bed and walked towards the bathroom, she paused and turned around "if I go and see her tomorrow, would you mind if I missed church"

Scotty nodded his head "sure Lil"

She grinned and closed the bathroom door behind her.

Lilly pulled up the car in front of the SRO that her sister was staying at, noting the dilapidated condition that it was in. As she walked into the lobby and saw the kind of element that was staying there, her big sister protective instinct kicked in for the first time in over 10 years.

She approached the reception desk that was protected behind thick glass and attracted the attention of the man in the blue singlet top sitting on his swivel chair as he read the paper.

"Excuse me"

The man looked up and his eyes travelled over Lilly's face, pausing briefly to stare at her chest "Were full up sweetheart"

"No, I am looking for a guest of yours, Christina Rush"

The man looked over the guest ledger next to him "Room 201" her replied "take the stairs the elevators broken"

"Thanks"

The man shrugged and returned to his paper.

Lilly rubbed her baby bump tenderly, trying to calm her churning stomach. Nerves were starting to get the better of her and she decided to knock now before she chickened out.

She wrapped on the mottled wood and waited.

She could hear someone moving around the room and the door slowly opened, she was once again face to face with her little sister.

"Lil!" Chris said in a surprised voice "I didn't think you'd actually come"

"Scotty can be pretty convincing when he wants to be" Lilly replied, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips "can I come in?"

Chris nodded and stepped aside, letting her sister into the apartment.

Lilly looked around the dingy place that her sister was staying, feeling her skin crawling at how disgusting it looked. "So, how are you?" Lilly asked as Chris shut the front door and took a seat on the couch.

"I'm fine, what about you?"

Lilly rested her hand on her tummy again "I'm alright, feeling better now that the morning sickness has finally stopped. Think it was worse than when I was pregnant with the triplets"

Chris smiled "I am really happy for you, you know. Scotty seems like a really great guy and I saw your daughter the other night when I stopped by the house, she's really gorgeous. She looks just like you did when we were little. I always thought you'd make a great mum"

"I didn't think I would at first" Lilly admitted "when I was first pregnant, I was frightened but with Scotty's support….I think I am doing a good job"

"You couldn't do any worse than mum" Lilly nodded and they fell into silence, unsure of what to talk about next "sit down, please" Chris pointed at the armchair opposite the couch and Lilly sat down.

"I read your letter"

Chris swallowed thickly "I just didn't know what to say to you in person, thought it would be easier to write it down"

"I appreciated it"

"You deserved to hear it long ago, but at first I was mad at you….which I know sounds crazy, but I figured that you shouldn't have been angry with me. I was selfish and a coward. I hurt you and all you did was look after me…I was a complete bitch. I hope that one day you could forgive me…or at least get to a point where we could be friends again"

Lilly nodded "I would like that too" Lilly admitted "I mean you have two nephews and a niece that you've never met"

"And I'd like to meet them too"

Lilly and Chris smiled at each other, it was the first time in years that they had and Lilly found it comforting.

"I can't believe that you're staying in this dump" she commented "it's disgusting"

Chris shrugged "it's all that I could afford"

Lilly sighed "maybe you should come and stay at our place….we have a crappy fold out in the den but its yours if you want it"

"Are you sure?"

Lilly nodded "sure, I mean if we are going to try and get back to where we were before…." She trailed off not wanting to bring up the past once more and threaten the tentative truce they had going "….then we are going to have to be under the same roof, aren't we?"

Chris nodded "I suppose we are, if you're sure Scotty won't mind?"

Lilly grinned "He'll be fine with it"

Christina immediately got to her feet and practically ran into the bedroom, to throw her clothes into a suitcase.
