Chapter 26

With Lilly due in two weeks, she decided to start her maternity leave. Scotty and Mike spent a weekend putting the baby furniture together, and clearing out the study to set up the nursery. They decided that the baby would stay in the nursery for the first couple of years and then they'd move him or her into one of the other kid's room when he or she were a little older.

"You like the paint colour Querida" Scotty asked her as Lilly leant against the doorframe, watching him and Mike arranging the furniture "we still have time if you want it re-painted"

Lilly smiled "No, it's nice….makes sense being a neutral colour since we don't know if we are having a boy or girl" Lilly replied rubbing a hand over her bump.

"Oh Lilly before I forget, Allie gave me her TENS machine to lend to you for the birth, it's in the backseat of my car" Mike said, smiling at her.

Lilly smiled again "thanks Mike" Lilly winced, rubbing her lower back and Scotty frowned in concern.

"Baby go lie down for a bit, get off your feet"

She shook her head "no, it's fine. It passes" She spied the rocking chair in the corner that Ramiro and Rosa had given them and it did look rather inviting "well I guess I should try out the chair" she said as she lowered herself into it.

Scotty squatted down in front of her, pressing a kiss to her bump "you look really tired sweetheart, can I do anythin for you?"

Lilly reached out and ran fingers through his hair "no, I am fine…unless you wanna have the baby for me?"

Scotty chuckled "would if I could Querida, speaking of which….have you packed the hospital bag yet?"

Lilly nodded "yes mum" she teased and Mike sniggered.

"Hey don't you laugh" Scotty snapped, turning to face his brother "when Allie was pregnant you were more maternal than she was"

Lilly rolled her eyes "I am just hoping that James and Matthew don't end up behaving like you two when they grow up"

"I am afraid it's a certainty Mi hija" Rosa said as she walked into the room, pausing to kiss Scotty and Mike on the cheek

"Hey Ma, what are you doing here?" Scotty asked

Rosa waved him off "I am just dropping off some more baby clothes that I finished and I have brought you some wool and needles if you still want to learn"

Lilly nodded "got to have something to do since Mister Worry Wart won't let me do anything"

Scotty helped her to her feet "I'm just being cautious Lil"

"I know" Lilly replied "that's why I love you"

Rosa guided her back down the hallway and into their bedroom.

Scotty came home from work absolutely exhausted; he cooked dinner with Chris, helped Laura with her homework and took Humphrey for a quick walk. He had barely enough energy to drag himself back upstairs before stripping off his clothes and jumping in the shower. He was so tired that he almost fell asleep as he was brushing his teeth.

He pulled back the blankets and collapsed onto the pillows.

"God I am tired"

Lilly leaned over and kissed his cheek "long day at work?" she asked him softly

Scotty closed his eyes and nodded "We think we finally got a break in the case, we arrested a few of the key lieutenant in the Mexicalis and one of them agreed to flip on his Bosses for a deal"

Lilly smiled "that's good"

"We have him in holding downtown, bringing him up to the DA's office tomorrow for his statement before they bury him in the witness protection program"

"I am proud of you Baby"

Scotty rolled his head over and opened his eyes "thank you Querida, so how was your day?"

Lilly chuckled "your kids been doing somersaults all day, she stopped for a while…only started up again when you came to bed"

Scotty reached over and rubbed her swollen belly, he leaned down and pressed his lips to her stomach "hola bebé, papa está aquí ahora, Dale tu mama un descanso así que ella puede conseguir domir un poco"

Lilly giggled "what are you saying to her?"

Scotty lifted his head up moved to lie next to her "tellin' him to let his mummy sleep"

Lilly kissed him gently "she likes her Daddies voice"

Scotty sighed "I can't wait to hold him in my arms Lil, smell that new baby smell…hell I am even looking forward to those 2am feedings"

Lilly smirked "I can live without the 2am feedings but I know what you mean"

Scotty closed his eyes "I really got to get some sleep, big day tomorrow…then I'll be able to start my paternal leave and I can be here when you go into labour"

Lilly reached over to her side of the bed and turned off the lamp "goodnight baby, I love you"

"Love you too Lil" Scotty replied as he drifted off to sleep.

Lilly was woken the next morning as Scotty leant down to kiss her; she sighed and cupped his cheek "I had a terrible dream last night"

"Oh yeah" Scotty asked taking a seat on the edge of the mattress "what about?"

Lilly frowned "about you, I dreamt that I was locked in this room and couldn't get out….I tried calling out for you but you didn't come"

Scotty leant down again, kissing her lips "that would never happen Querida, I am always gonna be there when you call for me"

Lilly smiled "It was just a stupid dream; I know that…it was still scary"

"You are never gonna lose me Lil, I don't plan on going anywhere"

Lilly nodded "I know"

Scotty kissed her forehead "I gotta go to work, I'll see you tonight"

"Be careful today"

"I am careful every day Lil"

"Just don't do anything stupid"

Scotty stood up "I won't, I love you"

"Love you too"

Juan Pedro, a 25 year old father of three, joined the Mexicalis when he was just 13. He knew that the Mexicalis would want him dead for talking to the Feds, but he had to think about his wife and daughters. He hadn't gotten much sleep last night, he was worried about his family, even though the Boricua Fed promised that his wife and girls were safe and would he would be joining them after he testified to the DA this morning.

The looked up as he heard the electronic buzzing and saw the two Feds walking down the corridor by his cell.

"You ready to go Juan?" The gringo asked him

"Sí" Juan said as he stood up, walking over to the bars to be handcuffed "¿Está mi familia?"

"Son bien Juan, hablé con su esposa est mañana" the Boricua replied and then translated for his partner.

"the sooner we get you to the DA, the sooner you can be with them" The gringo added

Juan nodded.

Scotty and Jack led Juan into the parking garage, all the Agents on high alert for possible retribution "looking forward to your parental leave?" Jack asked his partner.

"I think Lil is going stir crazy on maternity leave"

Jack chuckled "think my ex threatened to kill me a few days before she was due"

Scotty nodded "I know that well, Chris tells me that you asked her to move in with you"

Jack nodded "Yeah"

"Ain't it a bit quick, you haven't been dating that long"

"I love her man, why wait when you sure"

The sound of a motorcycle took them all by surprise, a man; dress in black leathers was speeding through the parking lot towards them.

"GUN!" An agent yelled

The sound of bullets spraying the concrete walls and metal cars revibrated around the parking structure. The agents returned fire and they knew that they gotten the perp as he slumped over the handle bars and skidded to a stop near a ramp.

Jack lifted his head as he heard his colleagues yell that the gun was secure and he helped Juan to his feet where he and Scotty had pulled him down.

"That was close, huh Scotty"

He turned to face his partner, only to find him still lying on the ground, a deep red stain spreading across his white dress shirt.

"Oh crap, Agent down!" he yelled

He dropped to his knees, pressing his hand into the wound "hold on man, we have a bus coming" he reassured him.

Scotty coughed, blood leaking out the side of his mouth "tell…Lil…..I love her….that I will….always love her" he whispered.

"No Scotty, you can tell her yourself…you are gonna make it"

Scotty shook his head, rasping for every breath "you promise me man, tell her I want her to be happy"

"Where is that damn ambulance?" he called

"It's on route sir, eta is about 2 minutes"

"Hear that Scotty, the ambulance will be here soon, just stay awake alright"

Scotty nodded

"Get the witness outta here before someone else tries to shoot him" Jack added angrily

The two agents that had grabbed hold of Juan and dragged him towards a black sedan.

The triple burp of the siren, announced the arrival of the ambulance and the two paramedics immediately jumped out, rushing over to where Scotty lay.

"Looks like two gunshot wounds, possible hemopneumothorax" one of them told his partner as they applied gauze to Scotty's skin "let's scoop and run"

The other paramedic nodded, running to the back of the ambulance to grab the gurney.

"We're taking him to Memorial" the paramedic told Jack.

"I am going with him"

"No can do sir, against the rules"

Jack tried to argue but Agent Carter, who came downstairs after hearing about the shooting, grabbed hold of his shoulder.

"You need to go tell his wife Jack, his family needs to be informed. I'll go to the hospital and see if I can get an update"

Jack hesitated for a few seconds, watching his partner and best friend being loaded into the back of the ambulance before turning on his heel and running, full pelt towards his car.
