Note From The Author: I am so sorry this took so long guys! My muse went away for a while. Dantana don't get much screen time but hopefully that changes in the future. I also apologise for the angst but there might be a bit of that too come. Things will get better eventually though!
Prancing into the apartment with the biggest grin on her face Rachel twirled around still caught up in the Broadway of it all as Kurt closed the iron door behind them. "It was so amazing, can we go to a show every night?" She asked, turning back to see Kurt was still just as impressed as he was when they left. It wasn't until Kurt had finished saying his hellos that Rachel caught onto the slightly shocked expression he now had.
Stepping forward Kurt slung his coat over the back of the arm chair before advancing towards Santana and Dani, who were now sitting at opposite sides of the couch looking like someone just died. Taking a moment to comprehend what he might've almost seen Kurt scratched his chin, looking between the two girls. "I'm sorry, did we come in at a bad time?" Kurt asked in an overly happy tone.
Shaking her head almost as soon as Kurt started speaking Santana was about to do everything in her power to stop him from talking. "Bad time? No? Of course not, we were just watching some crap movie." Santana blurted, the intensity of her voice giving the whole situation away.
Laughing Kurt leaned back in the chair and crossed his legs. "Oh really?" He began, not being able to hold back the snickers as Santana and Dani's eye's grew wider and wider. "You see to me it looked like you two were about to kiss? Or am I seeing things now?" He continued, finding the expression on Santana's face too funny.
Rachel just stood there. She hadn't moved from the door, almost like her feet were bolted to the floor. Was Santana really about to kiss her. There's was no way… Rachel didn't want to believe it but Santana wouldn't be acting so suspiciously for no reason. Taking a shaky deep breath and trying to hold back the tears Rachel turned away to hang up her coat. She was also using it as an excuse to try and compose herself before she could face them all again. It was hard pretending not to be disappointed when you have spent your life wearing your emotions on your sleeve. Back in high school if she felt like crying or just felt sad in general Rachel could always just go to the auditorium and sing her feelings out. It was something she definitely missed about last year.
'Just breathe' she said to herself before turning to face the group again. She caught eye contact with Dani first; it felt like a dagger going through her stomach, then Santana. Seeing the girls face made her heart melt and break at the same time. It was so obvious. 'Did it have to be her? Or anyone? Why not me?!' She asked herself whilst her legs instinctively carried her towards her room.
"Rachel?" Kurt asked, sounding concerned as his friend stormed off without a word. "Goodnight then… I guess." He added when she gave no excuse.
Rachel was sulking, Santana was internally slapping herself and Kurt was prying, Dani felt embarrassed and stupid. It was time to leave. Standing from the couch she chose not to look at Santana before she left. Bidding Kurt a goodbye Dani got her things and made her way home. If Santana was so embarrassed of the thought of being caught kissing her then clearly it was a bad idea.
Watching as Dani left Kurt was even more confused. "Do I smell or something?" He joked. Everything had turned sour very quickly.
With that Santana was now agitated and not ready to have some gay-to-gay bonding session with Kurt Hummel. Removing herself from the couch she headed towards her own room.
"Oh not you too, what the hell just happened?!" Kurt yelled after Santana as she left him alone in the living room. Waiting for the house to go silent Kurt decided he was going to get to the end of this. Quietly tip-toeing his way to Santana's room he slowly pulled back the curtain and before it was even halfway open Santana was already telling him to not bother and leave.
"Get out Hummel." She deadpanned, it was slightly muffled as she had buried her face in her pillow but Kurt was used to Santana's mumbling now so he got the jist of it.
Not listening Kurt stepped inside, closing the curtain behind him.
His friendship with Santana had always been rocky. They didn't exactly hang in the same circles at school and even after they were both in Glee Club it didn't stop Santana being Santana towards him. Since moving in she had calmed down, Kurt and Rachel were her family away from home and deep, deep down she had mad love for them. She just didn't always show it.
Smoothing out a spot on Santana's unmade bed Kurt timidly took a seat on the mattress, he wasn't going to push her too far to talk, that never worked with someone like Santana but he was going to do his best. Something was obviously bothering her or she wouldn't have left too.
Clearing his throat Kurt thought of the best way to word it. "Look I'm sorry, I didn't mean what I said. You guys were obviously just hugging? I was just joking around, Santana." He put himself in the wrong, hoping that approach would work. "I wont make jokes like that again if it hel-" This was it, he was about to get slapped.
"You were right." She mumbled from the pillow.
"You two kissed?" Kurt whispered.
"No… but we almost did." Santana finally admitted.
Looking around Kurt was confused as to why Santana would get so worked up about that. "You tried to hide that because?" Taking a moment to prepare for a punch in the face Kurt braced himself. "Do you like her?" He asked gingerly.
Nothing.
"Santana?" Tapping her shoulder lightly in case she had fallen asleep.
"No." She mumbled quietly.
"No?" Okay this was getting annoying. "Santana can you please stop talking in code? If you don't like her why did you kiss her?" He asked in a slightly louder voice.
"I didn't!" Santana hissed in return. "I said almost Kurt, that means I didn't go through with it you idiot. You guys walked in just before we actually touched lips." She shouted through the fabric. "I don't like her. I don't like anyone. I can't like anyone." Her voice had gone very quiet. She hated being vulnerable.
Features softening Kurt shuffled a little closer on the bed and let his hand rest on Santana's back. "You can like whoever you want, Santana." Rubbing her back lightly Kurt felt his heart sink, he knew why she was like this now. "I know you got hurt Santana, I've been there. I promise it gets better." In the past Kurt had never cared for Santana but things were different now and he truly did just want her to be happy again.
Santana could feel her eyes stinging; she really didn't want to talk about this now, or ever. "I'm fine, can you go now please?" She ordered, but it came out more like a desperate beg.
Sighing Kurt nodded, she couldn't see but he did it anyway. "Okay, I'll go. Just know you're capable of loving again Santana." Moving off the bed Kurt left her in peace.
Lying in bed that night he could hear her crying. It was weird; he had never felt so passionately about Santana in a friend way before. He wanted her to get better, it was really hard for him to see someone he knows who has gone through a lot still be so broken. He would try again another day but for now she just needed to cry.
END NOTES: The next chapter will feature some very said news. I hope you guys think the way I handle it in the story is okay because I don't want to screw it up.
