The Princess of the Night
Chapter 16 – An Obvious Conclusion
A/N: Ok, so I know I said I was planning to end this at the season two finale, but when I wrote this chapter, I realised that it should be the last. It feels like a more natural conclusion. I feel like I've put Gerard through enough, especially after adding the fight with Marek in the last chapter. I realise it's a pretty short chapter, but there isn't really much to say about it. I really hope it isn't disappointing. I quite like it, it's the ending I think the respective characters deserve. But enough of my incessant rambling, here's the last chapter!
Gerard and Celestia materialised in Ponyville town hall. The princess was unsteady on her hooves, but after a moment regained her composure. Gerard looked around.
"No pony's home then. Damn." He turned. "Do you have any idea where they might be?" he asked Celestia.
She thought for a moment before replying.
"If Twilight know as much as I think she does, then she has probably gone to my old castle in the Everfree Forest."
Gerard nodded. "Can you take us there?"
Celestia, by way of response, teleported them.
They appeared just outside the main hall of the castle. For Celestia this was not problem, as she had wings. Gerard however, dropped like a stone before catching himself with his magic. He levitated next to Celestia in time to hear a voice:
"Ah reckon we really do represent the elements of friendship!"
Celestia chose this moment to raise the sun, enveloping herself in a ball of light before entering the hall through a window. Gerard rolled his eyes.
"Show off," he muttered.
"Damn right," replied Marek from inside his head.
"You be quiet, I'm still mad at you for trying to kill me.
"Oh come on, I was only joking!"
Gerard ignored this and teleported inside the hall, shielding himself from view behind a pillar. He heard Celestia speak.
"Princess Luna."
Gerard peeked around the pillar. He was not going to reveal himself yet. It was Celestia's time to make amends with her sister, and he was not going to interfere with that. But he had to look, had to see her again. He almost gave himself away by gasping. There was princess Luna, the pony he loved with every fibre of his being, and she was as beautiful as ever. It took all of his self-control not to run to her there and then. He jumped when he heard one of the other ponies, a bright pink one, burst in to tears. He was even more startled when she perked up almost immediately and said
"Hey! You know what this calls for? A PARTY!"
Gerard had followed the troop of ponies all the way back to Ponyville, waiting for the right moment to reveal himself. He hid amongst the crowd as Luna and Celestia disembarked from their carriage and greeted their subjects. He saw the look of shock on the lunar princesses face as two young Pegasi flew up to her and places a wreath of flowers around her neck. At this point Celestia turned to Twilight, and the attention of the crowd began to wander. This was his chance. Butterflies swarmed his stomach, and he found it extremely hard to breathe. He took a step forward, then another, and another, until he stood behind Luna.
Ok, come on, breathe. You know how to do that, right? You do it every day. Come on now, in and out. There you go! Now, say something! Gerard cleared his throat. Eloquent, as always. Luna turned around and laid eyes on the one pony she wanted to see above all others. Admittedly, she had never seen pony Gerard before, so she had to ask.
"Gerard?" she whispered, yet he still heard over the noise of the crowd. He didn't trust his voice, so he just nodded. Tears of joy filled her eyes and she leaned in to kiss him. The moment their lips touched, they teleported. Luna pulled away to look at him, aware of the sudden silence. They were in a garden, next to a castle she didn't recognise. It took her a moment to realise they were hovering, kept aloft by the red glow of Gerard's magic. She looked down to see they were suspended over a small lake, with a single willow tree by the shore. She laughed as the glow faded and Gerard said:
"Gotcha."
