Chapter 9.

Reunion, Part 2

Rebekah decided to take Anja for a drink. She chose her favorite bar where she knew Marcel's guys didn't come very often. She liked her privacy.

They took the table in deep end of the room, where there were only few people and ordered themselves some vodka shots. Their conversation flew in random directions. At first it was just small talk, exchanging opinions about different topics. But more they talked, they both realized how easy it is for them. How comfortable they both feel. Like they knew each other for ages, even though they met few days ago.

After some time their conversation started to head in more personal direction.

"You're not scared sitting here alone with an Original." Rebekah stated.

"No I'm not." Anja smiled. "Don't get me wrong I know what your abilities are and I know how powerful your family is and it is scary but it's also fascinating."

"Fascinating?"

"Yeah, the life you have. The things you must have seen. Centuries of different people, places and cultures."

"Yeah, except the times my brother kept me locked in the box." Rebekah joked.

"Oh..." Anja didn't know what to say to that. "But you must also have experienced beautiful things. Tell me something about it."

Rebekah was hesitant at first but she finally opened up a little. She wasn't going to tell her whole life story because it would take ages but she chose some happier moments. One of them being 1920's in Chicago. Some of the happiest memories she has. Dancing, partying, enjoying the illegal events. That was so much fun. And then she and Nik met Stefan. Even though she felt kind of jealous of his bond with Klaus she knew Stefan belong with them, like he was part of the family. If only they didn't have to run that one night... Still it was one of the memories she enjoyed the most.

"Twenties must have been amazing. Wish I was alive then." Anja commented on Rebekah story.

"They were great but they also had some flaws." Rebekah was done talking about herself for now. She wanted to know more things about this girl. Maybe find out what is she really up to. Even though Rebekah didn't think that girl was evil or backstabbing, there had to be more to her story. "So how about you tell me something about yourself now."

"There is really nothing to tell." Anja explained. She became a little distant.

"There has to be." Rebekah wasn't going to give up that easily. "You can see ghosts of dead people. That is not the thing every human can tell about themselves. How was that like?"

Anja took her time before answering. Not looking at Rebekah directly she decided to focus on the glass standing before her. "It wasn't easy growing up with that gift. I was never good with people because I was always too direct and seeing ghost didn't really help with that. Sometimes it was hard for me to focus on my life. My parents always thought I was crazy, never believed me..." She paused her story and drank another shot. Taking deep breath she continued looking at the Original this time. "When I was in school it got worse. As I said It was hard for me to focus and then my grandmother died. I missed her so much. I tried to let all ghost in just to find her but I was never able to. Looking for her was too much... and I got a little... to enthusiastic about my gift. I didn't sleep and ate to little. I was on the roll you might say. So my parents - they got scared, I guess - and they locked me up in the mental hospital."

"I can't imagine how awful it must have been. And your grandmother? Were you close?"

"Yes we were. She had a gift too - and was one of only two people in my life that really understood me and believed me."

"She had a gift too? And what was your parents take on that. Didn't your mother had the gift too then?"

"My grandmother - her name was Stefanja - had the gift but my mother didn't. Apparently it skips a generation or two." There was another pause. You could tell from Anja's voice it's not easy for her to tell the story but she didn't stop. "As for my parents. They didn't believe her, that she has this abilities. She always supported me and helped me with managing the intrusive ghosts but my parents discouraged her when she did that. She was in concentration camp during the war you know. She was just a teenager then. But she was lucky, she survived. My parents always said that her seeing ghosts was the side effect of seeing this horrible things there, people being murdered. But I know it's not true. In fact that was what save her. Her gift was her salvage."

"Ghosts helped her escape the camp?" Rebekah was now intrigued with this story.

"Not exactly. A vampire saved her. He needed her help with ghosts so she helped him in exchange of taking her and few other children away from there. My grandmother was extraordinary woman and I will always love her. She told me everything about me and my history and thanks to her I'm stronger now."

"The war was terrible thing and I must say I'm glad I wasn't there to see it. Nik was in Europe during the war, so was Elijah and Stefan. Elijah told me a little about it. How he tried to help."

"Yes it was horrific. My grandmother was strong woman but she always cried when she told me stories about the war." When Anja finished talking there was an awkward silence. The bar was not a place for conversations like this. "You know lets change the subject because it's starting to get a little depressing and connect it with the alcohol we consumed - we will start crying soon." Anja laugh.

"You're probably right." Rebekah did the same.

"So you're helping Katherine?" Rebekah added after a while.

"Yeah. You might say that. But it's not only her I'm helping."

"But why?"

"I could give you a crap about this balance in nature thing but I won't. I'm helping her because I think she is not really that bad person. I'm helping Nadia because she deserves second chance with her mother. And I'm also helping your brother."

"Yeah him, he doesn't really deserve it too." Rebekah stated casually. "I'm just curious. What's in it for you?"

"I know it may sound insane but..." Anja needed another shot to help her confession. "You know this vampire that saved my grandmother... It was Klaus."

Rebekah was shocked. Her brother was the one saving her grandmother? But why? "Why?"

"Why did he needed her. I don't know exactly - It had something to do with your father and a weapon against him."

"So you helping my brother because he was the one taking your grandmother from concentration camp?"

"Yes. She was all I had and if it wasn't for your brother she could have died there. And I could have never been born."

Rebekah realized that this confession must have been a lot for Anja, so she decided they should head back to the mansion. Anja didn't object.

When Rebekah and Anja came back to the mansion Rebekah helped Anja with her bag and led her to the other guest room. One that the girl was suppose to share with Caroline. She came into the room and put Anja's bag on the bed sitting on it herself as well.

"It's a very nice room." Anja said while she looked around.

Both of them stayed silent for a while. Both feeling this weird connection. Heavy atmosphere filling the room. Cumbersome but exciting.

"Would you mind keeping me company till Caroline comes back?" Anja finally asked breaking the silence.

"Yes... of course." Rabekah responded and smiled at her.

Anja baldly approached Rebekah looking her straight in the eyes. She raised her hand to Rebekah's face and slowly caress her cheek. Moving her face closer, she pushed her hand to the back of Rebekah's neck and play with the roots of her hair. Anja lied a gentle kiss upon the Original's lips. Waiting for her to react.

Feeling the overwhelming sensation Rebekah took the lead, she responded to Anja's kiss tasting her lips with a tongue. She grabbed Anja's arms to bring their bodies closer, generating this heat wave between them.

They parted only for a second to remove their shirts and joined lips again. This time the kiss was more urged, more passionate. Their hot breaths exchanging making them wanting to push their bodies even closer.

Anja reached behind Rebekah and undid her bra, sliding it slowly down her arms - fingertips brushing her skin whole way down. Finally dropping the undergarment on the floor.

At first Anja's delicate hand were roaming around Rebekah's waist, then she felt them shift to the front. Pressing them on her belly.

Anja started moving her hands slowly upwards until they finally reached Rebekah's full breasts causing her to shiver.

She moaned when Anja began massaging them gently, the worm feeling spreading through her entire body.

She decided to deepen the kiss to feel more of this electricity between them, sliding her hand into Anja's hair at the same time...

Rebekah thought she heard someone clearing their throat. She broke the kiss, turning her head to the side and realized Klaus and Caroline entered the room.

She jumped at the sight of unexpected guests.

"Are we interrupting something?" Klaus said sarcastically.

Rebekah reached for the bed sheets to cover herself vampire-speed. Anja did the same but she was not able to do it as fast as the Original.

"Klaus! Get out!" She screamed at her brother, angry. She felt embarrassed because Caroline was standing next to him. They both clearly aware what was happening here but at least Caroline averted her eyes to save Rebekah and Anja form total embarrassment.

Caroline was going to leave the room and wanted to take Klaus with her but he was keen on making his sister miserable.

"Isn't it like the second time this month?" He laughed.

"Leave Nik! It's not your fucking room!"

He wanted to respond but Caroline grabbed his armed intending to pull him away from the room.

"I think we should leave them to have some privacy." Caroline was clearly uncomfortable with this situation. She saw that Klaus was about to say something more but she urged him with her sight. He smiled and nodded while they both exited the room leaving the girls alone again.

Rebekah looked at Anja to asses her state of mind. Realizing the girl wasn't as shocked as she thought she would be she spoke. "Well, that was..."

She lacked for word when Anja finished her sentence for her. "...awkward."

"That is putting it gently." As Rebekah said it they both burst into laughter.

"I guess I should be going." She continued as she picked her clothes from the floor and got herself dressed. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight, Rebekah." Anja responded seeing Original Vampire leaving the room.

That was definitely new experience for her.

When Elijah came back to the mansion he noticed that something was happening. His sister was back - he noticed her car parked in a driveway - but there was also another car he did not recognize.

He came inside the house and made his way straight to the study, where the voices came from, noticing his brother talking to Miss Forbes.

Elijah was surprised. He didn't expect to see one of Mystic Falls' resident sitting in their home. Considering they were always on the mission to find a way to neutralize his brother, it was un characteristic for one of them to visit Niklaus in New Orleans.

"Dear brother, it's so nice you're finally back." Klaus said as he noticed his brother entering the room.

"I was out checking few leads I had that regard the problem we are having." Elijah said vaguely. "What is going on here?" He asked wondering what brought Caroline to New Orleans.

"Well, you see Caroline here brought some friends from Mystic Falls with her, to warn me about a threat on my life. Apparently there is someone planning to kill me and they are putting their plan in motion as we speak. Would you believe, Elijah?" Klaus was playing with Elijah. Taking pleasure in watching his brothers confusion. It was rare to see Elijah disoriented and it was amusing to Klaus.

"Would you stop playing games with me Niklaus and explain what has been happening?" He paused and looked at Caroline sitting in front of Klaus. She look very uncomfortable about the situation playing in front of her. "Or maybe Miss Forbes will explain it to me if you are too busy making fun of the situation." His voice serious as usual.

"No need to get angry brother. Have a sit, we will explain everything to you."

Elijah sat down in one of the armchairs awaiting for Klaus to speak but he didn't. He saw his brother looking at Caroline instead.

"Me?" She finally asked, realizing Klaus wants her to tell Elijah everything.

"It's your story to tell after all." Klaus responded. His usual smirk appeared on his face and Caroline felt the need to punch it of his face.

She didn't know where to start. She never spoke with Elijah before. She heard from Elena he is honorable and honest but she felt nervous. He was an Original after all. She decided to tell him the whole story from the beginning.

"It all started few months back, on the graduation. Katherine and Elena got into a fight. Elena to beat Katherine forced the cure on her..." Caroline began to explain Elijah the reason she came here.

Elijah listened to her words but couldn't believe what he was hearing. Katerina has taken the cure and that meant she was... "Is Katerina human now?" He asked her. Could it be possible? Different thoughts run through his mind. He felt... confused.

"Not exactly..." He heard Caroline respond to him.

"What do you mean?" Elijah asked slowly. He acted like he was calm but inside he was beginning to worry. What happened to Katherine? Was she all right? Somewhere in his mind a regret appeared. He realized that leaving her alone might have not been the best idea.

"After some time Katherine realized that becoming human wasn't her only problem. She was dying." Caroline was concern with what her words will do to Elijah. "Fast."

No! The voice inside Elijah's head was screaming at him. She cannot be dead.

"Oh don't worry brother. Your beloved Katerina is not dead." Klaus said. He was openly laughing at his brother. "I see you will never learn when it comes to her. You are a fool."

"I don't think taking pleasure from your brothers pain is the way to go, Klaus." Caroline looked at Klaus with a suggestively. He assumed she was referring to the conversation they've had earlier today. Yet he couldn't help himself when it came to Katherine and her relationship to his brother.

"Miss Forbes, because my brother is so eagerly refusing me the answers, could you tell me the whole story, please?" Elijah decided to ignore his brother and focus on his guest instead. He was getting worried. Not knowing what happened and what to expect was unsettling. He thought he came to terms with leaving Katerina, making their lives part for good. He assumed it would be better for both of them but hearing that she was in danger, made all the pain he felt then, come back.

"It's Caroline." She responded to Elijah with a kind smile. "Let me continue with what happened."

Elijah carefully listen to every word that came from Caroline's mouth. He couldn't believe that these few months, they were apart were, so difficult for Katerina. First she couldn't find a place to stay when she became human. Then she found out she was going to be dead within a few months. Caroline told him about their journey to Europe and how Katherine collapsed few times.

Elijah was panicking. Usually calm and cold on the outside, he found it hard to contain his emotions.

When Caroline was close to finishing the story, Elijah was on edge. Hearing that she was upstairs - dead and in transition, not sure if she will wake up and become a vampire for the second time - Elijah stood up. He didn't wait for Caroline to end. He just left the room. In a hurry.

Elijah made his way upstairs preventing himself from running in vampire-speed the whole way. He couldn't believe what Niklaus and Caroline told him. All the regret he had, flooded his mind all once. The reason he left Katerina in the first place was to keep her alive. To keep her safe from his brother. If he were to leave with Katherine, he was sure Niklaus would go after both of them, making her suffer and making Elijah suffer in the process.

Leaving her alone in Mystic Falls was the hardest decision he'd ever made but it was to ensure Katerina's further survival. Faith likes to play with him. It turns out now that everything happened just the opposite to what he planned. By leaving her alone, he put her in even greater danger. And now she was here, in his brothers house. And Niklaus was the one that helped to save her - what a cruel irony. Surely he did not help her because he forgave Katherine. Nor was it because he changed his mind about allowing Elijah to know happiness with her. There was a reason behind it and as always, it was purely egoistical. Elijah couldn't be sure how long it will take for Klaus to get angry at Katerina and go back on his word. But this time he knew, he will be there for her to protect her himself.

He came into the room and saw Katherine, lying on the bed - her body still. She was dead. The woman Miss Forbes spoke of sat next to her. She was definitely an old vampire - he could sense that - probably transitioned during her mid-twenties.

As soon as he walked inside her sight shifted from Katerina to Elijah. She glanced at him suspiciously, estimating, analyzing. Assessing the risk of this situation. Then she spoke to him.

"So you must be the infamous Elijah Mikaelson?"

Elijah haven't responded to her at first, looking at unconscious body of Katerina. She lied there with no life and it broke his heart into a million pieces.

He approached an armchair that was placed across the room and carefully sat on it not taking his sight of Katherine.

"I am." He finally responded. "You are Nadia." He stated. It wasn't a question but he could hear Nadia's confirmation. "How long till she wakes up?" Elijah continued.

"Well..." Nadia started answering but had no idea what to tell Elijah. Katherine should have woken up some time ago but she was still dead. She was getting worried herself, because there was a chance the plan did not work. She and Katherine knew it was a possibility. "She should have already been done with the transition for some time now but she still like this." Nadia continued to answer Elijah but it was really hard for her not to show all her emotions. He couldn't know that she's her daughter. Caroline swear to keep a secret and Rebekah so far did not said a word. So there was still a chance for both of them to get out of here as soon as Katherine wakes without Klaus realizing who she is. If Klaus knew Nadia was Katherine's daughter he could use it against them. "There is a possibility she won't."

Elijah didn't respond to what he heard from this woman. He did not allow the thought of Katherine being dead to get to him now. His Katherine lived for more than five centuries. She couldn't be gone now.

An hour have passed and both Nadia and Elijah were still sitting in silence, waiting. Non of them spoke a single word for the entire time.

Elijah couldn't handle the wait. Always patient, collected Original couldn't handle his thoughts and doubts. The guilt was eating him alive. The idea of Katerina not waking up and him being partially responsible for that overwhelmed him.

"You are old vampire." He spoke to Nadia to break the silence to distract himself. Besides it was good for him to gather some more information. "I would say you as old as Katherine is. How did you both meet?"

Nadia didn't respond him at first. Gathering her thought, not wanting to lie to much to the Original. He could have sensed it if she did.

"Yes, I am almost as old as her. You might say I owe her my life..." Well that was the truth since Katherine gave birth to her.

"Where did you meet?" Elijah's voice was calm, even stoic but deep inside he was intrigued. Katherine saved her, which proved to him she always had a good side in her heart.

"I first encounter her in Bulgaria but we rekindled our relations few months back..." Nadia wanted to continue the story but was interrupted by noise. She realized it was Katherine, waking up, fighting for every breath.

Both Elijah and Nadia approached her in high-speed. Helping her get comfortable. Nadia reached for the blood bag she kept ready.

"What... Where am I?" Katherine was confused. She noticed Nadia and Elijah? Was Elijah really here or was it her hallucination? She decided to focus on what she knew. Her daughter. "I need blood." She finally said and took it from Nadia.

"How are you feeling?" her daughter asked.

"Well I feel better than the first time. So I guess that's good. Maybe the third time will be piece of cake." Katherine joked and sank her teeth into blood bag.

Elijah was watching Katherine drinking the blood voraciously from the bag. He could feel a relief that she was alive but couldn't help a sight of regret appear that in his mind. He was watching Katerina become vampire, when he so desperately wanted her to be human again.

She appeared to ignore him focusing on her companion instead. Her face, even though baring a sign of tension, seemed more at ease that he has ever seen her. It was another side of her, yet another side Elijah wasn't acknowledged with.

He was standing there beside the bed, she was resting on, when she finally turned to face him and spoke.

"What are you doing here, Elijah?" She asked, her voice sounding accusatory.

"Caroline told me everything. That you were dying and about you needing Klaus to transition..."

"Yes, that was unfortunate." She interrupted him. "You can say karma is a bitch."

"I am glad it worked."

Elijah was looking into her eyes. He knew her well. Even though she pretended to be fine, she was hurt and angry. They were both alike that way. Covering pain with stone expression, that was why he knew what she felt.

Neither of them realized Nadia left the room to allow them some privacy.

"What do you want Elijah. I didn't come here for you. I came to see your brother and to make a deal with him. When the deal is done I will be gone."

"I wanted to apologize, Katerina." He stated.

"For what? Leaving me alone in Mystic Falls. How many times was it now, Elijah? huh?" Katherine was angry but she tried her best to remain calm. Not to show her emotions to Elijah. Not to show him that he has hurt her this much. "You know what. I doesn't matter anymore. I was never good enough. Your family always came before me. I understand you now. I get you will always choose your brother over, me. It was me, who made mistake thinking you will act differently for once. So I don't blame you. No need to apologize." She wanted him gone. Out of her room.

"Katerina..." He cupped her cheek with his hand.

Katherine wanted to believe that he loves her but she always ended up hurt, when she trusted him.

She retreated from her position, allowing herself distance between them. She was on a mission now and she needed to think clearly. She needed to control her anger.

It's too late for us now. She thought. How many times can we do this dance. It always ends up with hurt.

She gathered all her strength and looked inside his deep, chocolate eyes.

"It's OK Elijah. It wasn't meant to be. You have your family. Your psychotic, paranoid brother. And I have my family now."

"What do you mean?"

"Nadia." She paused, not sure she wanted to tell him the truth. "She's my daughter."

"I... I don't understand." Elijah was confused. Miss Forbes never said anything about Nadia being Katherine's child.

"When they took her away from me after birth, I thought she was lost. But it turns out she searched for me, Elijah. She wanted to find me. She became a vampire to find me. Well at first she wanted to punish me for abandoning her." She laughed. "But when I told her I didn't. That she was taken away..." Katherine was fighting her tears. "I have her now. And she is my life now, Elijah."

Katherine wanted to turn around and leave but Elijah stopped her.

"You have a second chance now, Katerina." What was he suppose to say to her? He didn't want it to end like this. Her walking away angry at him. "You understand why I need that second chance with my family too."

"Oh I do. I think I understand it better than you." She was angry again. "But you know what? At least I was always honest with you. You say you need to save your brother because his your family. But the real reason you want to safe your irredeemable brother is not for him. It's for you. So you can prove to yourself that you are not a monster your mother said you were." She knew it was a low blow but her anger overpowered her in that moment. She was now screaming at Elijah. "Because when you can make Klaus be better, maybe there is also hope for you. So please don't lie to me, don't pretend to be so good and honorable. Because you are not better than us Elijah. You just put up a facade. Difference is - yours is much more polished and well prepared. We are all monsters Elijah. You should really accept that."

Elijah didn't say a word. What Katherine said had touch the right place in his soul. She was right. He was just like Niklaus. Or even worse because he thought of himself as a better brother, as a savior of this damaged family. Truth is, he couldn't save Klaus when they were little children and as much as he tried he failed. Now they both needed to be saved. Or was it too late for them.

"If you don't mind." She said to him, bringing him back to ground. "It's late. Nadia and I would like to rest, because I'm sure your brother is very anxious to learn, what it is we know about the plan against him."

"Yes. Naturally." He said. "But Katherine." He called her Katherine. "Please say goodbye before you live, whenever it might be."

Elijah didn't wait for Katherine to respond. He went out.

As soon as he left the room Nadia came back inside.

"When do we leave?" She asked Katherine.

"We will stick around to find out everything Anja knows." Katherine said quietly so she wouldn't be overheard by anyone. "After they are all busy with finding the way to prevent this Banshee from killing Klaus we take the first window of opportunity that presents itself. If we find ourselves rid off all of them, we run."

"What about Elijah?" Nadia wanted to know what were Katherine plans for him. If she really loved him as much as Caroline said, she might have some doubts about leaving him.

"What about him?"

"Are you going to leave him here? Not even saying goodbye?"

"We've already said our goodbyes. It's all in the past and we have to take care of our future. We are both survivors Nadia. We don't need anyone else, we will manage on our own. It is how its suppose to be. I wasn't good mother for you. I was no mother at all. Now it's time to try and fix it." Katherine really wanted her relationship with Nadia to work. She made so many mistakes in her life but Nadia was her legacy. The only good thing she ever did.

"But you love him?"

"I don't" She said.

Nadia knew Katherine was lying and she didn't even try to hide it. "Please Katherine, who are you lying to? Did you forget the art of lying and deception is my craft too?"

Katherine sat on the bed and looked away. "I use to. But I don't anymore." She let out a sigh of regret and she looked back and Nadia again. Her poker face once again covered up her feelings. Now she was Katherine Pierce -the cold bitch - again. "As I said it is all in the past. We're leaving as soon as we can." Katherine got up and grabbed her bag to search for change of clothes. "Now let's sleep."
