~I only own my Ocs and the chaos they might end up causing Please Review or tell Pm me with ideas. This story is long overdue for a fixer upper. I am still looking for a beta. If anyone would want to volunteer that would be great! Just leave me a comment or PM me saying so. For any and all mistakes I take full credit. I am currently going back through my fic and fixing some mistakes and maybe adding or cutting some things out. Thank you to my reviewers, and the people who followed and or favorited my story. This chapter will follow only bits of the movie, I have to change it to fit the OCs. OCs in this story are based off of people in real life that I see almost every day, and yes they really do have these personalities. No flames, the dragon fire later in this fanfic will be hot enough for me thank you. Now on with the story!~
P.S. This is now officially an AU
Anything in elvish will be in bold
(Rose's Pov)
I hurried to my rooms to change. Once in my room I looked around for the supposedly fire-proof clothes that Raweru had promised me would be here. I found them folded on the chair of the vanity. I unfolded it and found that it was basically the forest green and gold version of the clothes Sami was given to wear to dinner but in leather. But upon closer inspection I found that the sleeves and cloak-like part of the top were removable. I did this and then put the outfit on and looked into the mirror. I was in a vest that laced up in the front. It was fitted to my body but still allowed for a wide range of movement. The pants were the same way. I nodded to my reflection satisfied that this would work. I then picked up the dress I had worn for dinner and laid it out on the bed so that it would not wrinkle. I took off my circlet I replaced it with a strip of cloth on the vanity. It took me a moment to see the two bracelets on the vanity next to where I found the clothes.
"That's what I get for being off in dream land and going into auto pilot." I mumble under my breath.
I pick up one of the bracelets and take a closer look at it. It reminds me of Wonder Woman's indestructible bracelets that she could deflect bullets with. I smirked to myself and put them on. I tied the sword I took from the troll cave to my belt and left the room heading to the training field.
~time skip to the training field~
I arrived at the training field to find Thorin and Raweru waiting for me. Thorin had a scowl plastered on his handsome face... 'Whoa girl! Get your mind off that. No distractions even if he is quite stunning...No! Bad girl! Focus!' I scolded myself mentally. I am not sure if Thorin could tell I was arguing with myself or not but Raweru clearly could if the smirk on her face was anything to go by.
"Ah Rose I hope the clothes are to your liking." Raweru said mirth still in her eyes. I nodded not trusting myself to not growl at her.
"Good. Now on with your training. Tell me how much do you know about the elements. To start with how many are there? What are their various sub-forms? What happens when they clash or when they team up?"
I took a moment to consider her questions before answering, "There are six elements. Wind, water, earth, fire, lighting, and light. But the tricky thing about light is that like with four other the other elements it has an opposite. Most people don't count darkness as an element but it is still is due to being the opposite of light."
When I paused to take a breath Raweru interrupted, "Very good but you got a few small things wrong. Darkness is a true element. It is lighting that is not. Lighting is a sub-element. A sub-element is an element that only comes into existence under certain circumstances. Lighting only occurs during storms and sometimes not even then. Continue."
I let that sink in and glanced over at Thorin. He seemed shocked at what he had just heard but after a few seconds the words began to make sense to him too.
"What exactly do you mean by sub-forms?" I asked
"Ah so do you think like an elf young slegna. Well a sub-form is not the same as a sub-element. A sub-form is merely a simpler version of an element. Can you think of what some examples might be?"
"Heat, damp, brightness, and dimness would be sub-forms for fire, water, light and darkness."
"Well done. Can you think of any examples for wind and earth?"
"No." I said disappointed
"Do not be hard on yourself youngling. I can't think of any examples for those two either. Now on to the next question. What happens when two true elements clash? What about when they collaborate?"
"It depends on the circumstances. Two elements working in harmony can cause just as much devastation and destruction as to elements that clash."
"Very astute young one, but we both know that is not the answer I am looking for." Raweru said dealing out both praise for a good answer and scolding for being a smart ass. I hear Thorin chuckling and make a mental note to show him the sharper side of my personality.
"I will give you an example and you will tell me what elements are involved and if they are in harmony or pitted against one another. Let's start off with an easy one. Thorin feel free to answer as well but make sure that if you do wish to do so you let me know so that we can hear your answer first." Raweru stopped for a moment to think of a situation. She smiled and spoke, "Waves crashing on a rocky shore slowly grinding the rocks away."
I thought before giving my answer, "Well rocks are hardened earth. Waves are a combination of water and wind working together. But the waves are grinding the rock away so you have two elements working together against another."
"Well done. Now try this one." Raweru smirked "A hurricane verse a dust devil"
"Wind and water clashing against wind and earth."
"Fire storm and earthquake"
"Fire and wind combined and earth"
"Well done. Now we move on to practicing with light and darkness. Those are two that must be worked on together at the same time."
(Sabriel Morwen's Pov)
As I tend to my fire I go over what I have seen. Rose has mastered two elements, failed epically at another, danced on a table and sung a few songs. Seems normal for her at this point. Rose and Thorin clearly fancy each other but both are too blind to see the other's feelings. It would seem that Sami and the large dwarf with tattoos are in the same situation. Fili appears smitten with Ashley, who doesn't notice and does not quite look at Fili that way. Macy, Alex and Chuckles are all up in the air yet. Bugger! People really need to figure out how to open up their eyes.
Outside the cave I had chosen to rest in for the night after making sure that it was free of any goblin traps the world suddenly went dark. Next it was blazingly bright. I sighed, better check on Rose, the elleth and Thorin. I closed my eyes but left the rest of my senses open and thought of Rose. I could hear nothing and watched as her left hand started to shine brighter than the sun and her right hand was shrouded in a void blacker than a moonless night while she looked to be saying something. Soon both the light and the dark faded. Her wrists now held a single tattoo each. I wish I could hear but that would leave me very vulnerable if Goblins found me and decided to try sneaking up on me.
(No one's Pov 5min earlier)
"Rose hold your out hands flat with your palms facing upward." Rose did as she was told. "I am not going to lie this will hurt but it is the only way to control the elements of light and dark. They need to be anchored to your body in some fashion. Now clasp your hands over the opposite wrist. Good now repeat after me. Gwedhi i balan ned duath a calad an enni. Anna enni taur tortha or nin balan. Oh and Thorin you may want to cover your ears." Raweru said
Rose repeated the two sentences but the last word ended in a scream as her hands and wrists began to glow or become shrouded respectively while the world flickered between first into darkness then back to light. When the pain finally dulled and Rose had screamed herself hoarse she took her hands away from the opposite wrists not surprised at the deep nail marks in her flesh. She must have broken the skin in her pain. But that is not what held her attention. She stared at the tattoos on her wrists. One tattoo on each wrist. On the left wrist was a black star with six points. On the right was a white sun.
"Now to activate and control those elements you need memories to fuel them. Happy ones for light which is the easier of the two to control. For darkness you'll need memories of sadness, hurt or anger. Normally you would need to worry about darkness trying to take control of you but due to the second part of the binding it is not something to worry about. Which one do you want to start with?"
"Light." Rose responded trying to pick out some happy memories.
"Choose your memory and tap on your tattoo for light."
Rose thought about her childhood focusing on the time before her siblings were born. But she was unable to find any that were clear enough for her to use. Next she thought about the times between her sister's birth and the end of elementary. Books and reading came to mind along with the days away from that blasted school.
Thorin watched as Rose's face shifted between frown and half-smile.
Rose kept searching her memory shifting to look through her memories of high school and Jr. High. The first thing she thought of was her ninth grade year and the band trip with her friends, five of them where here in middle earth with her. Singing a lead role in a song with two other girls. Her being chosen for that role. She tapped her right wrist and soon she was surrounded in blinding light that seemed to come from within her very body. After a while she let the light fade and looked to Raweru for instructions on how to control it after generating the light.
"The souls of those who have been hurt the worst often shine the brightest and my dear that is the brightest I have ever seen anyone glow. To control the light just think about what you want it to do. Now again."
Rose brought up the same memories and added some new ones to the mix. This time she shone even brighter than before. She mentally linked the light to her hand and it all gathered by around the limb. Rose moved her arm in a way that suggested casting something from her. The light flew away but stopped when she made movements to do so. Her hand traced patterns in the air that the light followed. Thorin watched as slowly a picture of a young girl riding a wave formed. Then Rose thought of an idea. If Water, wind, earth and fire could produce solid forms why not light or darkness? She pictured a weapon and the light forming a single-edged sword with a single hand hilt.
Rose feel the weight of the weapon that had formed in her left hand and hear the gasp that came from behind her.
"Well done Rose now try darkness. Same procedure."
She closed her eyes and started her search. Unlike with the happy memories Rose didn't have to dig deep for memories filled so full of sadness and hurt that she came close to crying. Her seventh birthday. Being yelled at for everything the devils she had to call her siblings did. Rejection from first her father's side of the family then her mother's. Never getting to see her father. Being friendless alone and feeling unwanted and hated. She tapped the tattoo as first one tear then another began to roll down her face.
Rose was swallowed a column of darkness. Now that no one could see what she was doing just the column, in the center of which she stood. Rose wiped the tears off her face and out of her eyes. She hardened both her heart and her resolve and began to manipulate the darkness around her. The light had been easy to control but the darkness was even simpler. With a wisp of a thought Rose now held a sword in her right hand that was the dark twin of the light sword from before. She changed the column into a colossal dragon that stood in front of her.
Now that she had the darkness under control she let go of the memories that were causing her so much pain and thought of the happy ones and taped her light tattoo. She formed the light sword. Now she held both the light sword and the dark sword. With those in hand and the dragon at her side she turned to see Raweru and Thorin dumbstruck. Before she could speak she began to feel light-headed and let the elements go. The swords and dragon faded in to nothing as though they had never existed.
(Thorin's Pov)
"Rose. You not only shine the brightest but control the darkness the easiest. Sit and rest a moment I will be right back." Raweru said. I looked at Rose, into her eyes and found a whirling storm of emotions so torrential that I had to look away. She spoke first breaking the silence that stood between us like a wall.
"I did it Thorin. I mastered two more." Her voice was weak and she sounded tired. From how easily she was working those two elements at the same time I would bet that it was the memories not the actually use of her powers that had tired her out.
"Here I took this from dinner. Thought you might be hungry since you didn't really eat anything." I say handing her a bread roll.
"There wasn't really anything TO eat. It was all rabbit food." At my amused look she said, "What? I don't eat leafy shit...Thanks...for the bread." She said haltingly before eating the roll.
I grunt in acknowledgement not knowing what to say. She starts to sway back and forth and falls backwards before I can do anything. Just as she starts falling she whistled to summon a breeze to lower herself gently to the ground. After she is safely on the ground she releases the wind and just stairs up the stars that have begun to appear in the sky. Not wanting to seem awkward standing while she is on the ground, I sit next to her.
"When I was younger I used to know all of Middle Earth's star constellations and where they were in the sky. Now the only one I remember is Durin's Crown but I don't know where it is." Rose said
I don't know why but I felt almost compelled to tell her, to remind her about that which she has forgotten.
"It is found in the Northern sky. The other constellations are Anarríma, Menelmacar, Remmirath, Soronúmë, Telumendil, Valacirca, and Wilwarin. Anarrima, Valacirca also hang in the north with Durin's Crown. Soronume is in the west and Remmirath is in the east. Menelmacar, Telumendil both can be seen from almost anywhere."
I found Menelmacar hanging in the sky right above us and pointed it out to Rose. "That is Menelmacar-" "Isn't he called the swordsman of the sky?" Rose interrupted me. I turned to look at her and scold her for interrupting me but thought better of it when I looked at her face. She had a look of deep concentration chiseled into her features.
"Yes he is." Her face eases into a thoughtful expression. "We have a song where I come from at tells of a women and her man. She cries for him when he is summoned off to fight because he has nothing to defend himself with. He has neither sword nor shield. So she sells everything except the clothes on her back and her home to buy him a sword. In the end he has won many battles but his woman still has just her home and a few clothes. She is living off the bare minimum. She dyes her petty coat red to show that she is proud of her man. But in the end of the song he dies and she is left with nothing but her house and two sets of clothes. It is a song that teaches us that the lowliest people can rise to great heights just as easily as they can fall. No one is invincible." Her voice seemed weighted as though she was reminding herself of something.
"Since you already know so much of my world tell me about yours." I say trying to draw her away from her sullen thoughts. Her golden eyes darken, I think may have brought up some unpleasant memories.
"It is slowly dying. People have become greedy wanting only power and wealth even if it comes at the price of other people's lives. Forests are being cut down, rivers, lakes and parts the seas and oceans are being filled with pollution. Wars are fought for oil. My world is at war with itself. People against People. People against nature. But despite all that bad there is still some good." Now her eyes lighten again and I can see hope for her world shining like a thousand lanterns in them. "Every day more people begin to fight against tyrants that try to control them. Families are starting to see what matters again. There are still some places untouched, wild and beautiful in my world and more people are beginning to realize that we need those places to stay as they are."
I think over everything that she has told me and then remember that I have that strange thing that the crazy one used to blast sounds at me and my company earlier. I take it out and hand it to Rose "What is this?" I ask
She takes it surprised. "This is called an iPod touch. It plays songs and can be used to play games. Who did you get this from?"
"It fell out of Macy's pocket. She tried blasting us with a bunch of noise. It said something about Misery loving its company or some such." Her eyes widen and she tapes of the dark side of the 'iPod' thing.
"Go figure that would be her password." Rose says shaking her head and tapping it again until the same noise is coming out as earlier.
"That the one?" She asks. I nod and she taps it again turning off the noise. "It is called Misery Loves My Company by a band called Three Days Grace. Most of their songs are like that." She explains, "One of my favorites is call Animal I Have Become. Here, Thorin, try this one instead." She taps the thing a few more times and out comes a different song.

I smiled at her. "That was much better. Do you have one of these things?"
"Sort of but I have less songs." she said. I wondered what sort of music was on her 'iPod'.
"Enough resting now. Time to learn how to control fire." Raweru said coming up behind us. I still don't like her. But now I REALLY don't like her because she interrupted my talk with Rose again. Damned she-elf!
(Rose's Pov)
I sighed. As much as I wanted to learn control, I liked sitting and talking with Thorin more. Oh well better do as she says. I got up off the ground and waited for Raweru's instruction.
"Fire is not unlike water in the way to control it. But just like wind, light or darkness it needs to be summoned or have a source. But if need be it can be generated." At my confused look she said, "All the elements really are is energy in different forms. Fire is basically the physical form of energy without any modification. Fire doesn't fall into the categories of Liquid, solid or gas. It is its own thing, a combination of all the categories."
That made sense. I nodded to show that I understood.
"Hold your hands out with your fingers curled slightly upwards. Good now make them face each other. Keep them a little ways away from each still tilted slightly skyward."
It look like my hands were holding an invisible ball of some sort.
"Now think of a fire about the size of a fist." I did so and felt rather then saw when the fire came into existence. It was the same color my eyes had been with tints of green in it. "Good. Since you are in fire proof clothes and your skin is naturally fire proof you don't have to worry about burning yourself. Show me what you can do."
I thought about the fire making a circle and nothing happened. I huffed
'Okay Rose. Think. If you can't control it mentally how about saying what you want it to do-'
"Talking to the fire won't work either." Raweru said seeming to find my frustration amusing.
'What about movement. Let's try that.'
I parted my hands. Both held a ball of fire about the size of a golf ball. Okay not what I intended but so far so good. I thrust my right hand out and into a circular movement. A circle of fire appeared in the air in front of me and just hung there. I spread my fingers out and the circle split into five smaller circles. I flicked my left wrist and the fire in that hand went out. I closed my right hand in a fist and the fire converged into a single ball of silver blue and green flames.
On instinct I turned in a circle keeping my fist out so that the fire created a ring around me starting at the top of my left hip going to the bottom of my right one. I then conjured both sad and happy memories and taped both tattoos and created two more rings one from darkness and the other from light and made those two twist around one another and put that ring across my right shoulder to my left foot. Next I summoned a breeze and commanded into form a semi-visible ring that went from my left shoulder to my right foot. Next was water. I focused on the pulse that was water. I mentally commanded the water to form a ring opposite the fire. I realized I was trying to do something similar to what Aang did in his battle against Firelord Oazi.
(Thorin's Pov)
Rose stands in front of me surrounded by her elements just as she was both during the troll fight and when the orc pack had us cornered. The only thing missing was the earth and lighting. Even without those two elements she looks both beautiful and dangerous beyond believe. I almost feel sorry that Smaug is going to face that if, no when he messes with us, then I remember all those who died the day the dragon came and can't wait for that worm to face his doom. Rose is strong she would have no trouble slaying that beast even without her friends help. Besides if it came down to it. We now had our own dragon. But Rose was defiantly the strongest and I am proud of that. I wonder if am I proud because I like her or do I like her because of the possibilities of what she could do?
(Rose's Pov)
I turned to face Thorin and Raweru. Thorin's eyes held an emotion that I had never seen before along with pride. Raweru looked impressed and said, "Try earth once again."
I sighed. I had mastered five out of the six. Now I just needed to try earth again.
I remembered what happened last time Raweru tried teaching me to control the earth. I feel for the pulse that is the ground and think of it rising. I was good as long as I didn't try to make things that had bodies.
(Thorin's Pov)
I watched as Rose made column after column of dirt until there were 22 of them. This time she didn't speak to it aloud. Soon she tired of making columns and made all shrink to certain heights. Then I realized what she was doing. She was making a version of our company. The columns formed a line. The tallest in front followed by the one my height and so on and so forth. She made the columns go through a tunnel made of water. Then through another made of light. Again through one of darkness. And into one of fire. The tunnel of fire most likely represented the lonely mountain. I guess she figured out what she had done wrong the first time. It looked like she wanted to make up for not mastering earth the first time like she had with the other elements by using the ones she had already mastered to spice up the show. After the dirt columns went into the fire tunnel she made the earth form a ring around her like she had with the other elements.
She let the elemental rings alone for a moment while deciding what to do. After a while she made up her mind. She seemed to will the rings away from her body. They floated above her before the rings became strings and wove themselves into a six strand braid. The braid then cut itself in half and formed into two circles. These circles moved to hover one around each wrist. They shrunk until they came in contact with her skin and began to blaze bright. Even the strand of darkness seemed to glow in its own way. After the brightness faded away there was a six strand bracelet on each of her wrists just above her tattoos.
She looked satisfied and gave me a small smile. I watched as Rose began to sway back and forth before getting her balance back.
"Rose do you have any idea what you just did?" Raweru asked awe in her voice
"No..." Rose allowed the sentence to drift off.
"For centuries elementals have been trying to bind all the elements in once place. Connecting the elements not only to each other but to those who use them. And you my dear have just done so. Move one of the bracelets up a little." Raweru said
Rose did so and beneath where the brace let had been was a new tattoo. It looked like the just like the bracelet.
Raweru gasped and just barely managed to say, "Rose, eldest daughter of Susan, blazing sword, slayer of trolls, orcs, and wargs alike I believe that you have just earned yourself a new title. Rose, ultimate mistress of the six elements. Very well done. You did in one night what some spent eons trying and failing to accomplish. Go rest now, you deserve it. For the next two weeks you and your friend shall meet me here at noon every day." With that she walked away.
Rose seemed to be lost in thought. "Rose."
She looked at me. I held out my arm for her to take and we walked back inside arm in arm.
Time skip two weeks
(no one's Pov)
After two weeks the whole company was rested and the only thing keeping them in Rivendell was that Rose needed to read the moon runes tonight. After the moon was high in the sky and Elrond and Gandalf had left for the meeting of the white counsel Rose lead Thorin, Balin, Bilbo and Sami to the moon stone. Once they had reached the chamber Rose motioned for Thorin to hand her the map. He did so and she laid the map out on the stone. A cloud moved to reveal a crescent moon. Beneath the map the stone began to glow thus making the hidden runes on the map visible. Rose read out the words that she had memorized so long ago.
"Stand by the grey stone when the thrush nocks. And the setting sun with the last light of Durin's day will shine upon the key hole."
"What is Durin' day?" Bilbo asked
"The start of the dwarves new year. It is when the sun and the moon are in the sky together." Sami explained to the confused hobbit
"This is old news. Durin's day will soon be upon us."
"We have some time yet Thorin. We have to be standing in the right spot at the right time." Rose said
"We will have to leave early in the morning before the elves realize we are gone." Balin said.
Rose and Sami nodded in agreement and headed back to their chambers.
(Rose's Pov)
After I fell asleep I met Galadriel in my dreams.
"Rose I am Galadriel. I know of you and your powerful friends young elemental."
"Then you know that I and one or two others hold future knowledge of middle earth. You cannot allow Saruman the traitor to know of our existence."
"Very well. But you should know that when the troll ate your cousin he returned to your world. He believes it is all a bad dream. You and your friends have been forgotten about. No one realizes you are missing. When you reach Erebor you will find a choice waiting for you there. Go home or stay forever in middle earth the choice is yours. All your friends will face a similar choice. But now you must wake your friends and the company of Thorin Oakenshield and leave Rivendell. Go now."
"Thank you my lady."
I woke and got dressed in my fire proof clothes after reattaching the sleeved part. I packed the clothes I had been wearing when I reached Rivendell along with the rest of my provisions. Which included my iPod, earbuds and solar charger all of which I gotten from Macy when I got back from training. I packed my circlet with a note to Alya thanking for the gift worthy of royalty. I also packed my dress. After arming myself I went to wake everyone else. After everyone was packed, dressed and armed I lead the way out of Rivendell with Cree, Sami and Alex flying overhead. All six of us from earth now had mastered our powers. All that is left to do is find Bails and head to the lonely mountain.
~Rose has come a long ways from having no control to mastering all six of the elements.~
