CHAPTER 19 - He Knows
•~Annabelle Cullen~•
I sighed and lowered my gaze towards my hands. Will he reject me? Will he accept me? Will he reject me? Will he accept me? The questions kept repeating in my head.
I looked back up to them, my eyes flickering to each of theirs, and then back down at my hands in my lap. "I was born in London, during 1657," I started. Daddy looked astonished. I had let my usual American accent revert to my true accent as I said that; the original London accents, not the cockney you hear now.
"My family was well off. We weren't rich, but we were comfortable. I was the only child between my parents." I said.
"My father and his father were both pastors, so you can imagine how it would bring more shame to what I became. One night, while my father was out hunting for vampires, witches and werewolves alike, he went missing. He never came back for me – like he'd promised," my voice lapsed into a whisper towards the end. I looked up to Daddy, who was studying me with his piercing eyes.
"My Daddy was practically everything to me. He attempted to teach me how to read and write many times, but failed. He would never give up with trying though, as it always meant that we could spend time alone together." I laughed slightly; the memory of many pieces of parchment lying on the floor with ink sprawled across them came to mind.
"When he went missing that night, the family fell apart. Mother fell into depression and grandfather never stopped sending out search parties to try to find him...they never had any luck. I felt like I had been left alone – it wasn't easy," I explained. "Only a few months later, the plague hit this city."
My head fell forward, and my hair formed a small shield around my face as I stared at my knees. I was completely alert to every single pair of eyes in the room, looking intensely at me. "My grandfather was first to go, and then my mother," I drew out painfully. "Because of their deaths, I inherited the house and was expected to do what my mother did for a living – that was when I was just eight years old...from having all that responsibility thrown onto me, I was forced to grow up in order to survive." I risked a look up at Daddy who was staring at me with anguished eyes. He knew. He knew it was me, but I still carried on with my tale.
"I made friends with one of the villagers, a fellow survivor of the plague. His name was Carleton. He owned a bookshop down the road from where I lived. We always met up at night as he and I always had to work during the daytime," I paused.
"We used to spend hours discussing cures and remedies that were in some of the medical journals that he had available in his shop. We were equals in a time of inequality and it felt good to have a true friend – it kept me going."
I sighed. This was the unpleasant part of my tale. I rubbed my eyes with the palms of my hands, and then brushed them through my long hair. "On one particular night, as I was making my way to Carleton's, I heard screams of agony coming from a nearby alley – Carleton had been stabbed in the chest," I heard a couple of gasps from my revelation. Venom started to pool in my eyes, blurring my vision slightly. "I didn't know what to do or how to help him, so I just got down to the ground with him and lifted his head gently onto my lap. It was that night that he told me that he had fallen in love with me, which led me to kissing him softly," I lifted my gaze to everyone. The girls had glazed eyes from tears that would never fall, and most of the guys were comforting their mates. I had never gone into this much depth before with my family, but they knew the gist of it. "I told him that I loved him too, and he smiled, thanking me...he died a minute later, comfortably in my arms."
I paused again, and drew a breath. "Only moments after that, I saw movement from up the alley. Knowing I was in danger, and that Carleton would want me to get to safety, I got up and ran in the other direction. I felt so guilty leaving him on the ground there. That was when I was attacked. The last thing I remember of that night was the unbearable pain that followed the man biting into my neck."
I glanced up solemnly into my Daddy's eyes and grimly said, "I had only just turned eighteen." His expression broke and would be crying – if he could. He looked like he was resisting the urge to come and hug me tightly in his arms, but he was frozen to his seat.
"I woke up three days later, not knowing what I had become. The vampire had left me alone, probably thinking I was dead or that I wouldn't survive. There were many villagers out looking for me as I could hear them shouting my name from all directions. I was going to call back to them, tell them I'm here, but as I did that I, naturally, breathed in to reply,"
Jasper and Javonn – he and Yvon had rejoined us all half way through the tale – looked at me sympathetically, as did most of the others. However, Daddy looked either wrecked or angry – I couldn't tell the difference. Maybe it was both. They have probably all assumed that I murdered those villagers.
"They took one look at my eyes and all stopped in fear, just staring at me. It was only for a brief second before they started screaming that I was a 'blood-sucking monster'," I closed my eyes and shook my head. "The idea of killing someone hurt more than the little burning sensation coming from my throat. So, I did the only thing that came to mind...I ran away from them all." They actually thought that I had killed them as I heard their gasps of disbelief.
"It wasn't long before I adopted the animal blood diet and was pleasantly surprised when I passed a lake and found my eyes were turning golden from the animal blood." I said, smiling slightly.
"For the first hundred or so years I'd travelled alone, never staying in one place for more than a couple of years. When my thirst was under control to my satisfaction, I went to colleges and night schools. Throughout those years, I have become fluent in many languages and have studied Mythology, Psychology, and Medicine." I flash a quick smile at Daddy. "At night, I studied World Law and History, English Literature, and Music studies – which are where I learnt how to play the piano, harp, violin, and a lute – a guitar nowadays." I noticed Edward smirk at the last two studies. It seems we may have something in common.
A whisper brought me out of my thoughts. I peered up to see my Daddy with his head in his hands, shoulders hunched and quivering slightly. He was shaking his head, saying the same thing repeatedly. He was in denial. He couldn't bring himself to believe that it was really me, his daughter, right in front of him. He kept saying 'No, this is wrong. It shouldn't be like this.'
This was when my family politely excused themselves and drifted out of the room together, knowing to give us some privacy. His family barely noticed their absence, instead were looking at Daddy with worry and concern. Edward was the only one not looking at him, but at me instead. His eyes were just full of shock and wonder.
Daddy stood shakily and as he spoke, his voice was rough and croaky. "Annie?" he asked, he too, reverted to his original London accent.
My eyes filled again with venom and lips broke into a smile, "Hi, Daddy."
