The next morning I woke up with that feeling. Unlike the other times it hadn't dissipated and it had sort of grown, but as well it wasn't as prevalent in my mind. It was sort of like a little thing in the back of my mind telling me that I should be alert.
Letting out a small sigh, so I wouldn't wake Lucy up seeing as how it was still pretty early, I pushed up on the cot and shuffled to my feet and across the room to where my bag was laying on the window seat. Pulling out my robe, I wrapped it around and tied it off before shuffling into my slipped and heading out the door. Softly closing it behind, I started downstairs where I heard someone shuffling around. Thinking that it might have been Mr. Pevensie getting ready to head off to the hospital I was completely shocked when I stepped around the corner and saw the missing Pevensie standing at the kitchen counter.
"Oh," I spoke in surprise and evidentially surprised her as well by the jump.
Wide eyed she turned with a slightly grimace until seeing that it was me. "Oh," She laughed softly, "I was worried you were Mum."
"I would have been too," I murmured and a bit angrily, but she didn't seem to notice or hear as she turned back to the counter.
"Do you want some coffee?" She smiled back to me.
"What no hello?" I tried to stop the frustrated and angry tone out of my voice and instead opted for a teasing one.
"Of course," She smiled and quickly walked towards me, pulling me into a hug, "it's nice to see you Eres." Before I could really get my arms around her, she was pulling away.
Furrowing my brow, I pushed it to the back of my mind. "I'll just go get the milk," I gestured over my shoulder.
"Thanks," She smiled and just giving a nod, I turned and started towards the front. Pulling open the door, I quickly grabbed the fresh bottle of milk right before heading back in to see Peter heading down the steps.
"You're up early, for you at least," He chuckled and I gave him a mock glare.
"I couldn't sleep well," I explained before dropping my voice to a whisper, "but I'm not the only one up." Giving him a pointed look, I nodded to the kitchen and he seemed to understand. Hurrying his pace slightly, he quickly moved towards the kitchen and I followed behind until he just paused at the doorway. Having been around him enough in my lifetimes, I knew that look well; the very frustrated, but restraining his temper, one.
Scooting around him, and basically wanting to get out before the restraint gave way, I moved up to the counter. "Peter," She smiled, having noticed him and moved up to give him a hug that was a little longer than mine, but not by much.
"Hello," He muttered out, in a bit of confusion. Pouring in a bit of milk and a spoon of sugar I filled the rest of my cup with coffee, almost, just almost making it out when it happened. "Where have you been?" He asked with the anger noticeable in his tone and face.
"I fell asleep at my friend's house. Why does it matter, all I missed was dinner," She sighed.
"And decorating the tree," He frowned.
"So?"
"It's a family tradition, we couldn't put the angel on top."
"Peter, it's a bit childish, really," She shrugged and got her own cup. "Now, would you please get out of the way so I can go up and get dressed?"
A bit dumbfounded, I think he just stared at her for a bit before side stepping and she moved around him and disappeared through the door way. Frowning slightly, I turned back to the counter and started pulling out some bread for toast. "I don't get it, Eres," He murmured after a few moments. "She used to love decorating the tree, you know that."
"Well she loved to dictate where to put things," I teased slightly but gave him a sad smile. "She's still the same person, Pete."
"Yeah, but not really…She always knew what was important back then, and these things aren't important," He huffed and slumped back against the counter.
"She's just trying to find herself, Peter. Give her some time," I tried to comfort him.
"I know, I guess I just thought that having us all here would help her get there."
"You can't force her to see it, Pete," I frowned. "She has to find it herself. And it might take some time because goodness knows you Pevensie's are stubborn."
Looking up at me, he narrowed his eyes slightly, but finally cracked a small smile. "I guess you're right."
"Of course I am. That's why your brother is marrying me," I scoffed jokingly as I slide the tray of bread into the over.
"Oh, of course," he nodded before giving an eyeroll and moving over to the kettle to pour himself some coffee.
Taking my mug, I headed back out of the kitchen and through the house to the front room, sitting down on the couch. Looking to the lit Christmas tree I couldn't help but think of that first Christmas here in this world. Yes, it had more than a few confusing and embarrassing times but in reality, compared to the year before it was pretty normal.
Blending into this world, despite the training from Polly and then the Pevensies had been difficult, even with the knowledge I had from a lifetime in Narnia. For one I had forgotten just had mean girls could be, after all those times in my life had been a very long time ago. But, when we all arrived to school months after being just around Polly and the Pevensies it was a shock. Once again I had to remember how to be that child again and not the honored Queen that I had been all that time in Narnia. Susan had helped me a lot with that, she taught me how to create this other sort of persona and that's probably why I could understand why she was acting like this now.
She had gotten a little lost in her persona, one that she had built up amazingly in her time away from Narnia. And knowing the pain of losing it, which I secretly think was the reason to pull away so much, I understood it very well.
Just to show it even more, right then a shot of pain in my chest pulled me out of my thoughts and I almost dropped my mug from it. Hurriedly setting down the mug on the coffee table, I tipped my head down and pressed my hand to my heart to try and get rid of the sudden ache.
"Erie?"
A bit wide eyed, I looked over to the doorway to see Edmund standing there with that typical worried look on his face. "Morning," I pushed out a smile.
"What's wrong?" He asked, narrowing his eyes slightly as he moved around and sat down beside me.
"It's just a little heart burn or something," I tried to shrug it off, but even now it was hard to concentrate on him.
Frowning he looked at me for a moment before standing up, "stay here."
"Ed," I started but was instantly cut off.
"No, stay here."
Heaving a sigh, I leaned back against the couch as I heard his footsteps pound up the stairs. I couldn't help but feel all these things, the twinges, the sick feeling, the aches and pains had something to do with Narnia. But, with the idea that I hadn't had anything like it until right now, when I was an adult once again and combining it with Edmund's worrying I was starting to think that maybe it was because I was getting sick again and just associated it with some of my worse times in Narnia. I did remember getting headaches back then along with everything else, but that was towards the end, after I was too tired to do much else.
Biting the inside of my lip, my own worries getting up there I immediately looked up to Mr. Pevensie as he entered with Edmund right behind. "So you're not feeling that great?" he asked.
"It's just a head ache," I tried to brush it off because while I might be worried I more than anything just didn't want to ruin this Christmas.
"Her stomach's been feeling queasy as well," Edmund butted in.
"Only sometimes," I sighed.
"Well let's just have a look," Mr. Pevensie grinned and sat down across from me on the coffee table. Grabbing a instrument from his bag, he flicked a small torch on and off and even still I caught Edmund smirk a bit off to the side. Rolling my eyes up to him, I narrowed my eyes slightly before looking back to Mr. Pevensie. "Just follow the light," he spoke and I followed directions looking this way and that. "How long has this been going on, Eres?"
"Just a couple months," I answered.
Nodding he moved to another instrument and went about checking my ears and throat. "Besides your stomach and headaches, has anything else hurt? Any unusual muscle aches?"
"No, not really," I answered as he took out the stethoscope.
"Can you take off your robe for me?" he asked. Giving a nod, I started to undo it when I saw him look to Edmund. "You could give us some space, son."
"But…" He huffed slightly and I had to stifle a chuckle as Mr. Pevensie raised an eyebrow to him. "Fine, I'll be in the kitchen."
Smiling slightly, I shrugged off the robe. "Alright, deep breath," He spoke, putting the end of the stethoscope to my back and I complied. Moving the position he had me repeat it a couple more times then went to checking my hear, reflexes, and even my neck. "Everything looks to be in top shape," he answered as he sat back down on the table across from me. "As for the headache, you probably just tweaked a nerve when you were sleeping on that uncomfortable cot. There's a bottle of acetaminophen up in the bathroom closet. Just take two of them."
"Will do," I smiled in relief.
Smiling back he closed his bag and stood up. "I better be off."
"Thank you," I called slightly as he moved towards the doorway.
"It's not problem, Eres," he grinned. "See you at dinner."
Nodding, I waved to him and he moved out, calling goodbye to the rest of the family. It wasn't two seconds before Edmund was right back in the room. "What did he say?"
"He said that everything was in tip top shape. The headache was probably just because of sleeping weird." I answered, glancing up to him as I pulled my robe back on. "Now would you go get me two tablets of acetaminophen from the bathroom closet?" Pursing his lips slightly he gave a small nod and started across the room. "You also forget something," I spoke, crossing my arms over my chest as I leaned back into the couch.
At that he got a small smile and took a few steps back until he was in front of me. "I'm sorry," he whispered and leaned down. Smiling, I met him in the middle and pressed my lips to his. "Good Morning, Love."
"Much better," I whispered and pulled back.
"I'll be right back," he finally gave a full smile and continued on his way up the stairs.
