CHAPTER 24 - Vampire at Dusk

•~Garrett~•

I was walking in the streets of Columbus, Ohio, running the last conversation I had with my friends, Peter and Charlotte, before they had left, holding each other's hands. "I think it is time for you to settle down, my friend. Find your mate and be happy." He had said. He told me with such a knowing looking in his eyes, not helping much when his mate gave a sly chuckle at her husband's words.

The chances of me, Garrett Williams - a solider for the American army during the Great Revolution of our country that recited a war on us - finding a woman capable of returning the love that I know I would give thee...it's impossible. To me, a woman should be intelligent but not arrogant; sharp enough to hold her own ground; powerful so she can protect herself if I cannot be there to do that for her; want me for who I am and be able to compromise with each other. That's all I've ever wanted now thinking about it. 'Argh! Why did you have to say anything Peter?' I asked myself silently, pulling at my sandy blonde hair. If I laid eyes on my mate or caught her scent, I think- no. I know I would sense it straight away.

Right know though, it's time for me to feed. Dashing into a nearby ally as the sky darkens, providing me with the perfect cover; I stay hidden among the shadows. I always try to go for all the annoying tourists from Britain, the ones that no one will ever miss - normally the drugged up and criminal ones. I've always been perspective of people and automatically analyse and learn how they move, act, and react, giving me a near perfect indication as to how they are. But besides, nobody really liked them...or is that just me being judgemental? 'Oh, who cares?' I thought to myself.

As I heard a man coming my way, I listened to him. Singing...well, attempting to sing with the most God-awful sounding voice ever heard to man. Definitely drunk, no doubt about it, as I smelt the alcohol fumes rolling off him. They were the slowest to understand what was happening to them. I smiled. "Unlucky night for you," I chuckled faintly.

I stalked the man patiently, waiting for the right time to strike. He was carrying a guitar case, if you could call it that - looked like it has had its life and was ready to be disposed of, just like this man. But a musician, really? He couldn't even sing on key without bursting my eardrums...and mine can't even burst! I ran up to him from behind and pinned him roughly against the wall, taking him by complete surprise. He started struggling and attempted to call for help, but his words caught in his throat as I clasped my hand around his neck roughly.

"Shut up," I told him. "No one is coming to help you," I told him in a dead whisper, smiling evilly. The man's eyes wide like saucers and was still trying to escape under my grip, but had zero success doing so. "And just for the record," I continued taunting him. "I hated the first British invasion, I hated the second one even more, and don't even get me started on The Beatles" I said coldly, making a good point of myself before getting ready to bite, venom pooling in my mouth.

"Garrett?" Someone asked behind me. I looked to find a fellow nomad vampire, a female that travels across the country with me and has grown to be just like the sister I've always wanted.

"Yes 'Trina?" I asked her. Katrina Pierson. A petite woman, appears to more vulnerable than others but fights like anything I've ever seen in my existence. It was her hair that first had me drawn to her decades ago - long waves flowed down to her waist and as black as the night - it reminded me of my mother's hair, which is calming and peaceful to be reminded of each time I see her.

"It's time to go," She said eerily. 'So we are on the move again?' I sighed. I haven't heard her say it like that in years.

I dropped the man. "Sounds interesting, when you say it like that, 'Trina," I tell her softly, nodding slightly. "But first, I better finish my meal." I resorted and grinned. I ran back to the man and biting into his jugular and drained him up, cutting off any sound that was about to escape his mouth. 'Ahh, O-negative, my favourite,' I sighed, enjoying the blissful high I feel from the taste of human blood. As he fell limp in my arms, I stood up, dropping the now-dead man aside and wiped my mouth on my right sleeve. It came as a habit from my human years.

"So, where are we off to now, little one?" I asked her, suddenly intrigued.

"To the state of Washington. Everything will explain itself, once we get there. We have to go on." She replied. Katrina has this gift where she feels a pull in the direction and path of our chosen future. Similar to Alice Cullen's gift of foresight that was based upon peoples' decisions, except Katrina doesn't know what lies ahead of the chosen path. She does know for sure though that it would never lead to danger, just good things.

"I love a great adventure. I'm in." I said without thinking. She smiled in relief, but then paused.

"Wait, I'm getting something," she announced suddenly, her eyes closed with concentration. Before I could ask what was the matter, her eyes snapped back open. "Forks," she breathed. "We need to head for Forks,"

I looked at her crazy for a moment. "What? As in the cutlery name 'forks'?" I questioned, bewildered.

She gave be her best glare but amusement failed to stay absent in her eyes. "Not the utensil, you imbecile. There's a town in Washington State called Forks. We must head there," she explained. My reply only being my lips as they formed an 'O' with understanding.

We started running in the direction of the town. Jumping, ducking, dodging, and swimming through the terrain of water, forest and mountain ranges that we had to as we made our way to this isolated town in the top left-hand corner of America all the way from Ohio. As I was running, my mind drifted back over the conversation with Peter and Charlotte, nothing in specific though, just my curiosity peaking as usual.

After hours of just running, we came to an abrupt halt when we reached the "Welcome to Forks" sign. Katrina just turned her head, grinned at me, and then back to stare at the weathered sign. I smelled the air around us and smelt the scents of many vampires on one side and werewolves on the other, as if an imaginary line separated them, and made scent one bad cologne mixture. 'Ugh, I hate werewolves,' and for the first time since I've known Katrina, I was beginning to have my doubts about her ability, but didn't dare to say it out loud. I knew that there were already many vampires here but had no idea why. One: Why would Katrina's gift pull us here? Two: Why were there an abnormally large number of vampires taking up residence in one, very small area? And three: Why weren't the werewolves and vampires attacking each other? We are natural enemies after all.

Comments from Reviews for Chapter Twenty-Three:

- thiree - Thanks for the review, it was awesome! Yes Bella is in this story, and I was thinking of putting Edward with Bella in this story but I'm unsure for the moment; and I also like your suggestions for this story too.

- Breezy930 - Ahaa! Yes I know right? The Cullen's are going to feel so out of place for the time being with the Volturi and all of Annie's family too.
