Hey! I know I haven't updated for a while but school always gets in the way. Hope you like it!

I DO NOT OWN HART OF DIXIE ;)

It was the morning of the day in which Earl would be admitted to the hospital and Zoe was having breakfast with Lavon. They were in the middle of a conversation regards Earl's disease when a happy Wade entered the kitchen to join them.

"Morning Lavon, morning sunshine" he had that hot cocky smile on his lips as he greeted his friends and Zoe couldn't help but notice, he was so hot. Her mind immediately wandered to the other night's almost kiss the two of them shared at the Rammer Jammer and she shivered at the thought of his lips on hers.

"What time do we have to be in Mobile this afternoon, Doc?" He asked as he joined them, sitting on a stool.

"Three thirty, Wadester" Zoe laughed as Wade shook her a questioning look.

"Well you always call me names such as Doc so I for once get to call you Wadester" she shrugged as Lavon simply shook his head and the bartender chuckled.

"You need a lift? I am off my mayoral duties for today so I can come with you"

"I was thinking we could go with my Camaro but it's having problems with the clutch lately" Wade explained and they both looked at Zoe.

"For me it's the same. Lavon," she turned to her friend "you could take us all if it's not a problem for you"

"No problem" he shook his head.

"Thanks buddy" Wade patted his shoulder as he got up, ready for a morning at work "I'll see you this afternoon, then" his friends said goodbye and he went out closing the door behind him. Zoe grinned as she watched her ex boyfriend go away and when she turned to Lavon he stared at her with half closed eyes and raised eyebrows.

"Did something happen between you two, by any chance?" He questioned.

She jumped on her stool "nothing happened, why are you asking?"

"Wade told me what you said to Jesse the other day, about you two breaking up because you went to New York and needed space for yourself" he admitted. Ops, Wade had advised him not to tell anyone, especially her. Well, it was too late to withdraw what he said, so he continued "you forgot to mention the cheating part?"

"I..." She took her time to formulate an appropriate response that didn't give too much away about her growing feelings – actually they'd never gone away – for the hot, sandy-haired bartender. "I kept that part off on purpose. You know better than I do Wade and Jesse's fraternal relationship is not the best, I didn't want Jesse to believe his brother is shallow and vain. I mean maybe he already thinks so... I don't know if it actually makes sense, anyways when I said that I thought it made sense" she rambled a bit too much.

Lavon nodded knowingly "Lavon Hayes knows better, you still like him a lot, don't you?"

"Lavon Hayes should stop talking into third person" she winked "then maybe Zoe Hart will consider actually answering his question. I have to go now, see you later!"

"You can't run from your feelings, Z" he shouted to be heard from Zoe who was already outside. He shook his head wondering when they would finally get back together. He remembered Wade's cocky smile earlier that morning and Zoe's one, too and it was obvious to him their smiles were caused by each other.

The car ride to Mobile went pretty fast and silent. Earl was in the front seat next to Lavon and he was half asleep, overwhelmed by his disease. Wade was in the back seat behind Lavon, he was stiff and had a worried look on his face, while Jesse seemed quiet as he looked out of the car window. Zoe was in between the two brothers and she was worried, too for both Earl and Wade. She glanced in his direction and saw his stiffness so she put a hand on his thigh next to the knee. He looked back at her, smiled and took her hand in his, squeezing it.

Earl was checked in immediately after they arrived in Mobile's hospital and doctor Wayne Marcus explained the group in what exactly the surgery consisted in, then he gave Earl and his sons some papers they had to sign.

The week passed quickly, Jesse was admitted to the hospital three days before the transplant as they needed to check him up and everyday Wade went to Mobile to visit them every time he could. Lemon was really patient and helped him in any way she could without complaining and the business almost wasn't affected by his absence. On the day of the surgery they allowed him to sleep in the hospital and hey gave him a bed in the on-call room.

That day Zoe paid him a visit.

"Oh, these on-call rooms... you'd never guess what happens in here" she told him as she stood near the door.

"You know they show Grey's Anatomy in the South, too, right?" he smirked as he approached her. She hit his arm "wanna try?"

"No thanks, I've already had my fair share of adventures in New York" she winked "come on, let's go, it's almost time"

During the whole surgery Zoe was in the waiting room with Wade and occasionally she went in the operating room to check on both Earl and Jesse.
It took only about three hours for the surgeons to take part of Jesse's liver and soon he was back in his room and Wade and Zoe were allowed to visit him for a few minutes. Jesse was still half asleep but he heard them go in.

"Hey" Wade said as he approached the hospital bed "feeling good?"

"Almost, these painkillers are really effective" Jesse grinned "but I feel like there's something missing in my body" Wade and Zoe just looked at him and smiled. His eyelids were already closing and you could see he was still very tired so they decided to leave him and go back to the waiting room.

"Wade are you okay?"

"I'm fine Doc" he said unconvincingly and leaned his elbows on his knees, resting his head in his hands.

"You know, there are good surgeons there with your dad and it's all going to be fine, I promise" Zoe put a hand on his back and rubbed it lightly.

He looked back at her and smiled "I don't know what I would do if you weren't here with me"

"But I'm here and I'm not going to leave you. Now, you should get some sleep, it's gonna take a while for them to finish"

"Come here" he patted his legs and she settled on his lap. He embraced her and as she rested her head on his shoulder he inhaled her scent and oh, he'd missed her so much.

Seven hours later Dr Marcus had to wake them both as the had fallen asleep into each other's arms.

"Mr Kinsella?" he called "your father's awake and he's asked about you and, I'm quoting, the pretty doctor. I assume he wasn't talking about me" he chuckled and glanced at Zoe. Wade didn't say anything, he was still numb so Zoe got up and stepped in for him asking Dr Marcus what Wade wanted to know.

"How's the surgery gone?"

"It's gone smoothly. No complications, he's already awake and those are positive things but anyway only in a couple of days we'll know for sure if the transplant has been successful"

"Obviously" she nodded knowing exactly what he was talking about.

The doctor shook hands with both.

"Thank you" Wade nodded "so can we see him?"

"Of course, but only for a short time, he's very tired and his body needs to recover"

They went to Earl's room, Zoe stopped and took Wade's arm. He turned around to face her, a puzzled expression on his face. He had bags under his eyes since he hadn't been able to sleep a lot those days and thank God he managed to sleep for a few hours in the waiting room. Still, when he looked at her he couldn't help but smile and his face lit up.

"I'm gonna wait outside while-"

"Doc don't be silly" he said sweetly, staring at her.

"I don't want to disturb" she shrugged. She feared the embarrassment that could be created by that situation, it was something between father and son and she felt like the third wheel.

"Oh, come on, he told Dr Marcus he wanted to see ya, too and I want you there with me so you're coming" she had no time to reply as he took her by a hand and dragged her inside.
