Castle woke up to a whimper that was starting to turn into an unpleasant cry. His wife groaned and Castle rolled over to kiss her forehead before getting up and heading into the next room. This was the first time in months that Gracie hadn't slept through the night.
"Hey, monkey, what's wrong?" Castle said, tracing her belly. The baby whimpered again/
He picked Gracie up and carried her to the kitchen, humming to her as he went. He made a lap around the island and went back to her room when she was finally calmed down. But, when he laid her down, she grew fussy again. "Shh, it's alright. You're okay." He comforted, giving her a bottle and snuggling her in her crib. He leaned in and kissed her forehead. "Goodnight, monkey."
An hour later, Gracie started screaming and crying. Kate rolled out of bed and walked briskly into the baby's room to see what was the matter. Gracie had her fist in her mouth, trying to get some relief from her new teeth. Kate picked her up and rocked her back and forth, but her discomfort grew.
"Kate?" She heard Castle mumble from the other room.
"I'm sorry, Castle, I'm trying to calm her down." She walked into her bedroom to talk to Rick.
"It's alright. Is she okay?" Castle asked, sitting up.
"Yeah, I think she's teething." Kate continued to rock the baby. "What should we do."
"There should be some teething rings in the fridge. Go get one and I'll hold her." He stretched his arms out and Kate approached, handing their daughter over.
Gracie's discomfort seemed to be growing. "Shh, I know it hurts, sweetie. I'm sorry," Castle said, cradling her in his arms.
Beckett walked in with a teething ring and took Gracie back in her arms. She sat on her side of the bed, cradling the baby in her arms and giving her the ring to suck on. Gracie took it and immediately her crying stopped. She never took her eyes off her mother as they sat in the moonlight of the bedroom.
Minutes later, Castle got out of bed. "Babe, what are you doing?"
"I'm getting the pack and play so she can be closer to us."
"Should I put her in the play pen to sleep?"
"No, just hold her for now. She's content. And if you put her in now she's just going to freak out." Castle smiled lightly at her and got back in bed.
"I'm sorry, Castle, I know you have a book signing tomorrow." Kate looked at him with an apologetic look.
"It's alright, hun."
"I'm your biggest fan anyway." She smirked.
"I'm half asleep already." He leaned over and kissed Kate briefly before leaning down and smoothing the baby's hair and kissing her as well.
The next morning when he woke up, Kate was sound asleep on her side with Gracie snuggled up next to her. He gently picked up the sleeping little girl and put her in he crib so she could sleep more soundly. He then went back into their room and covered Kate with the sheets before kissing her temple.
