Drabble: Girl Talk
"Aw, come on Syd. It doesn't matter that he's an evil creature of the night, you like him." Sydney could hear Rose's teasing, sing-song voice on the other end of the phone.
Why, had she decided to call up Rose to get her advice, Sydney couldn't determine. But, she knew that the reason she called up Rose was because she trusted her. Rose was like Sydney's best friend, not that she'd ever admit it.
So, here she sat, listening to Rose's ridiculous, yet mildly amusing teasing, about how Sydney might possibly have feelings for Adrian Ivashkov.
"It's not like that. I'm an Alchemist. You remember what I told you happened to Keith? They would the same to me, only worse." I retaliated, after a few more comments.
She could hear her Dhampir friend sigh on the other end, considering. After a few moments of what Sydney hoped was actual thinking and not time wasted on coming up with more teases – not that Rose ever needed time – Rose asked,
"So, what do you wanna do? I'm here to help you all the way." Her voice was firm and reassuring, and Sydney felt herself smile softly. She could always rely on Rose and her loyalty,
"I promise I'll even help break you out of the reeducation centre, or whatever. I mean, I did break out a notorious criminal from the most high security prison ever." And, her joking tendencies were back. But Sydney knew, beyond a shadow of doubt, Rose actually meant those words.
Sydney laughed a little at that, "Well, I was hoping it wouldn't come to that. As for your question, I don't know, Rose. I mean I really like him and all, but does he really like me?" I bit my lip, insecurity seeping into my voice.
After a heartbeat of silence, Rose's voice came over the receiver, sounding baffled, "Are you kidding me, Syd? You told me he called you beautiful and complimented your eyes. Adrian never does that."
Sydney scoffed, "You mean to tell em he never called you beautiful?"
"Well, of course he did, on several occasions," Sydney felt her chest tighten at the prospect, "But, that's beside the point. Adrian doesn't pay attention to individual detail. Trust me, Syd. He likes you, a lot."
"How can you be sure? I mean, he used to be in love with you, and you're…" She trailed off.
"I'm what? Come on, Sydney. You're amazing, don't undermine yourself. You're beautiful, smart, and talented; any guy would be lucky to even be considered by you. And, as for Adrian…he loved me, I don't doubt that, but I don't think he was in love with me. He might be with you, though." She whispered the last part quietly, curiously, with a hint of happiness.
Sydney gaped, "Y-y-y-You t-think he m-might l-l-love me?"
"Yes," Rose said resolutely, "Or at least he will be, soon. Sydney, I love Adrian, despite what he might believe, and I know him. You're perfect for him, you comfort him, and you want him to want to be a better man."
Sydney just sat there, holding the phone to her ear, gaping at the blank wall.
"Personally, I say you take a chance. Adrian wouldn't hurt you; I know that much for sure. So, why not give it a try? Take a leap of faith? Take a risk, Syd. That's my advice."
Sydney inhaled deeply, "Okay, I'll see what I can do."
No sooner had the words left her lips, that she heard a squeal – or as close as Rose came to squealing – on the other end,
"That's great, Syd. He deserves to be happy after what I did to him." There was a hint of sorrow in Rose's voice, and Sydney wanted to comfort her, but before she could, Rose interrupted,
"Oh, and I want details." With that, the girls both laughed lightly and moved onto other topics.
So, What'd you think?
I wanted to show a lighter side of their friendship, so tell me what you think! ^^
