Billy waited inside his truck with the window rolled down right on the treaty line; he saw a couple of headlights approach him and the patriarch of the Cullen clan stepped out of his fancy car to greet him at the side of his door.
"What seems to be the problem chief?" Carlisle Cullen said beaming his smile.
"I have an issue with your boy, he seems to be scaring the sheriff's daughter." Billy said not really looking at the 'man'.
"I have been told he has never even spoken to the girl." Carlisle said innocently.
Now Billy looked at him. "That's only because she's been running away from him."
"And why is that chief? Did you by any chance forget the clauses of our treaty?" He said with slight accusation in his voice.
"She has no idea what you or your spawn really are; but she was perceptive enough to avoid them." Billy said with a hint of pride in his voice.
"I find that very hard to believe, specially given what my gifted daughter has seen in her future visions." Carlisle said smiling more widely.
Billy felt the blood drain from his face. "What did she see Cullen?"
"She saw the Swan girl as one of us, and Edward's mate."
Billy felt shaken to his core but tried to school his features.
"Now we still don't know exactly how it happens, Alice sometimes doesn't get all the details..." Carlisle was saying casually as if he was just talking about the weather. "We suspect maybe there will be an exception made for her turning..."
"The Swan girl is my son's mate Cullen, you know as well as I do that boundary is absolute." Billy said in his most authoritative chief voice.
Carlisle looked at Billy for a beat and smiled again before continuing. "From what I understand, miss Swan is not married nor even betrothed according to the laws of man. And to our knowledge your son has never phased, so he cannot possibly claim her by sleeping with her, as the rules of your tribe say. They are just, as the kids call it now a days, fooling around."
Billy sat up straighter and said: "Shall I remind you Cullen that turning anyone will be considered a breach of our treaty and that would be a sure way to find yourself at war with our Tribe. The Swan girl is under our protection and you will be wise to advise your kin to stay away from her AND her home."
Carlisle was surprised by the implication. "Edward would never..."
"He did! He was caught inside her room at night, swaying her mind while she slept." Billy was angry now.
Carlisle felt offended. "That's a myth..."
"Is it Cullen?" Billy said venom dripping from his voice.
Carlisle began to justify. "If she decides to get romantically involved with him..."
Billy cut him off. "If she decides to get romantically involved with him I will immediately be convinced the sway is real and she has been brainwashed by your sickly haze."
Carlisle was appalled. "Brainwashed! What about your kind? I happen to remembered a legend that your scent has a similar drawing effect."
"Our scent only works on our destined mates! It is no myth! The fact she's so drawn to my son even before he's phased should be clear enough proof of how they are meant to be together."
Carlie smirked. "We have no way of proving she's really drawn by him, maybe he's just as charming as you are chief."
Billy turned the truck back on and began closing the window.
"Tell your son to BACK OFF Cullen, or else..."
That evening Billy asked Bella and Jacob to sit around the Black's small table and discuss something important. Bella and Jacob were nervous but sat next to each other hand in hand watching Billy struggle to begin.
"I spoke to Dr. Cullen last night, and I know you guys just told Charlie about the two of you." Billy tried to smile reassuringly "He's thrilled by the way." He took a breath before continuing. "But here's the situation, I need you two to get married."
"WHAT?!" Bella and Jacob both yelled.
"We can keep it a secret, or you can just get very publicly engaged, whatever you prefer." Billy said casually as if that made it better.
"Why is this an issue?" Jacob asked confused.
"They'll only stop harassing her if she's your wife." Billy closed his eyes and took a breath. "Jake...they want her for their son." Billy said solemnly.
Jacob jumped up knocking his chair over. "OVER MY DEAD BODY!"
"What?! I have no say in this?!" Bella asked puzzled.
"You wouldn't have." Billy said seriously.
"What sort of sick twisted sex cult is this?" Jacob asked reaching for Bella almost unconsciously.
"A bad kind. Hence the marriage."
Bella had her hands on her head processing. "I can't believe this, I want to marry Jake, but not like this."
"You do?!" Jacob asked frankly surprised.
Bella reached her hand out to hold his gently and looked up at him sweetly. "Of course I do. Ever since I was 11. That's why Renée sabotaged our letters remembered?"
Billy cleared his throat and adjusted in his chair uncomfortably. "That wasn't Renée."
"WHAT?!" Both Jacob and Bella were shocked.
Billy's face looked pained. "I'm sorry Bella, that was me."
"Why?!" Bella asked betrayed.
Billy looked genuinely ashamed. "You're... not from the tribe. Jacob is the next chief, I thought maybe it was just puppy love between you two. I thought the distance would make him forget you and find a Quileute wife."
"How could you dad? You saw how much I missed her." Jacob looked deeply hurt.
A single tear rolled out of Billy's eyes. "I was wrong, I know that now, you two were destined. Nothing I did changed that. Bella you are obviously special to be in this situation, there's a reason they want you too. That's why we can't loose you to them, please, I'll take full blame if Charlie ever finds out. Just take the truck, go to Port Angeles and have a courtroom wedding, you're both 18 you don't need your parents anymore."
Bella was beyond moved at his tears, she reached her hand toward Billy and he reached out and squeezed it. "Alright." Bella said decidedly.
Jacob placed his hands on Bella's shoulders still pissed at his dad but aware of the urgency of the situation. "We'll go tomorrow, first thing in the morning."
"Thank you." Billy said emotionally still holding Bella's hand.
