Chapter 8
Raul Lopez was angry as he stared at his reflection in the dirty mirror. He was not only upset because his face hurt, he was also upset because the intruder had ruined everything. That night, Lopez was going to use some leverage against Esperanza. He was going to tell her that the debt had been settled as long as she would agree to be his wife. Who was that man anyway? He had never seen anyone carry a whip on his belt like that. Was he a suitor? If so, he had to be dealt with, and swiftly.
Lopez took his shirt off and lay on the bed, thinking about his next move. Dia de los Muertos was coming up and he had a feeling that this years' celebration would be the most spectacular one yet.
He would make Esperanza his bride and show her an even bigger world that she had ever seen.
Then there were the dreams. In the latest dream, he had seen a vision which felt as real as his reality. In the dream, he was sat cross legged and surrounding him were several artifacts of a long lost civilization and he was raising an army which would make him the most powerful man in a long line of leaders.
He closed his eyes and it was not long before he saw it. The old abandoned church in the square. There, hidden deep inside a wall, was a box and inside that box were treasures. But not just any treasures. They were the ones from his earlier dream.
Lopez' eyes snapped open. He had to get to the church. Now.
"How long has this been going on?" asked Indy.
"For a few months now", replied Esperanza. "Lopez seems to think that I owe him money and I have the feeling that he wants something else, too."
Indy didn't need any explanation as to what the man was after.
Some time later, Esperanza realized the time.
"Señor Jones", she began. "It is getting late and I must retire to bed."
Indy stood up. "Of course".
Esperanza went pale.
"What is it?" asked the archaeologist. "Are you concerned that Lopez will come back?"
"Yes. Unless…" her voice trailed off. "Indy, I know this may seem a little bit forward, but would you, I mean, we have a spare room, and…"
Indy rubbed his eyes. He was extremely tired.
"Senorita, I would appreciate that".
"And I know that you will be the perfect gentleman", she smiled.
Indiana Jones was no stranger having to wake up suddenly when his life was in danger, but the evening passed without incident.
