Anger and tranquility.
This was the dissonant state of Aaron Burr's mind as he stood in front of a certain door. This might be a dumb idea. No, scratch that. He KNOWS it's a dumb idea, yet his burning hatred for Alexander Hamilton made him stay there, whereas his normally logical self would've left minutes ago.
If he was going to do this, he wasn't just going to stain himself. He was going to stainheras well. And on top of everything else, their children. What would they think if they knew? Especially since this would make both parents of the Hamilton children cheaters. What would that makehim?
Every fiber of Aaron's being that has been accustomed to his waiting tactic was screaming, but Aaron decided against it. If he would get back at Hamilton, he would have to start acting. Now.
"Here goes nothing..."
It didn't take long for the door to open after he knocked. The beautiful wife of Alexander Hamilton was standing there, looking back at him with a curious expression.
"Mr. Burr, sir. I did not expect you." She greeted.
"Good evening, Mrs. Hamilton. I apologize for visiting at this time, if that's a bother, but I wanted to discuss something with you." He eloquently explained.
Eliza nodded in understanding, and stepped aside to invite him in. "Very well, come in then."
"Thank you." The two made their way to the living room where Aaron took a seat. "Would you like a cup of coffee, Mr. Burr?"
"That would be nice."
Eliza told him she'd be right back, and he nodded in response. Looking around the room, Aaron ran the situation through his head.
Everything is going good so far. Then again, I am yet to even implicitly announce why I'm here, so that might not last.
Eliza shortly came back with their two cups of coffee and set them down on the table. "Here you go, Mr. Burr."
"Thank you, Mrs. Hamilton. And please, you can call me Aaron."
"Very well." She took a sip of her coffee. "Then Aaron, what have you come to discuss?"
Aaron hesitated. The moment of truth is upon him.
"Mrs. Hamilton? Has any news concerning your husband reached your ears lately?"
Putting a hand over her chest, Eliza furrowed her eyebrows in concern. "No, nothing. Did something happen to him?"
Aaron shook his head. "No, God forbid. Nothing has happened to him, I'm positive he's still working right now." This was actually the reason why Aaron came today, he knew Alexander wouldn't be here.
The woman in the blue dress sighed in relief. "Oh, thank you God. If that's not the case, then what do you mean by your question?"
Taking a sip of coffee in preparation, Aaron looked at her. He had to admit, she was beautiful, like his Theodosia...
"Well, I have become Vice President, but it didn't last long. I almost won that election, if not for one thing..."
The more the man in front of her spoke, the more Eliza realized where he was going with this. She hadn't actually realized what happened in the election because she was...preoccupied, but if something stopped Aaron Burr from achieving his goal, it would be one thing.
"...Alexander."
"Yes."
Silence befell the two. Frankly, Eliza didn't know how to react. A lot of questions were on her mind.
"Aaron, I'm sorry to hear about that."
"Your husband's grounds for it is that I have no principles."
"...I figured. I appreciate you coming to me for comfort but...I'm not sure there's much I can do to help you."
Aaron raised his eyebrow. "Well, you might be able to, if you happen to hate him."
The cryptic response almost made Eliza protest loudly, but then she remembered her children are peacefully sleeping upstairs, so instead she scoffed and shook her head in disbelief. "What...what do you mean? Of course I don't hate him."
"Not even a little bit? After the incident?" Burr challenged.
The woman realized he was talking about the Reynolds pamphlet, a document written by her very own Alexander, admitting to a long-term extramarital affair. Eliza looked to the side.
"Well...Forgiveness doesn't always mean that hatred is entirely gone." She admitted.
"I do not ask for much, Eliza. If it helps, I might have a secondary reason for this."
"And...what would that be...?"
"My wife...my late wife..."
Realization kicked in, and Eliza could see what he was alluding to. Her face took on a more somber expression. "I am sorry for your loss."
"Me and the little one took it hard, as you can imagine."
"I know how it feels, Aaron."
Eliza suddenly stood up, Aaron following her with her gaze. "Please stand up, Aaron." And he did.
The two stood inches from each other for a minute. Eliza noted how Aaron was shorter than Alexander, but still slightly taller than she is. That should make it easier.
"We'll never speak of this. Ever."
"Of course, Eliza. We'll carry it with us to our graves."
She wordlessly nodded. Aaron added. "You know, you really remind me of my Theodosia, the way you look."
Eliza titled her head slightly. "I suppose it helps, doesn't it?"
"Yes, yes it does."
"Then are you ready, Mr. Burr?"
"Whenever you are, Mrs. Hamilton."
Their kiss was soft and tender, her hands were clasping his cheeks, and his hands were resting on her shoulders. In the moment, to both of them, there was nothing, except each other.
They pulled away.
"Will that suffice, my dear Aaron?"
"Yes, Mrs. Hamilton."
Eliza did a little teasing smile. "I must say, I'm surprised that you didn't want to undo my corset."
"No, I would never stoop that low." Aaron defended himself.
"But you still kissed a married woman. Maybe Alexander had a point, you aren't a man of principles."
"But you were complicit. Revenge was your motive as well, so does that not make you just as bad?"
"Hypocrisy, Aaron. Civilization's greatest virtue." Eliza retorted.
"I suppose so. I should be going now. Thank you for the coffee."
"I'll walk you to the door."
When they arrived to the front door, Aaron opened it himself, then looked back at Eliza. "Have a good night."
"You too. And Aaron, your wife and daughter are lucky to have you."
Aaron smiled. "Yours too."
As she watched him leave, Eliza pondered. "What would've it been like being married to you instead, I wonder." Then she closed the door, promising to cherish this moment until the day she dies.
Aaron turned around after he heard the door closed and shook his head. "I still feel unsatisfied with Alexander, but I'll cherish this moment until the day I die."
And so they did.
