Chapter 2: Broken

Clouds of smoke filled the room and invaded his lungs. He could feel the heat from the fire as the flames engulfed the walls. Toby coughed trying to clear his lungs, but more smoke replaced his air to breathe. Suddenly, the smoke became darker, flames hotter, and his vision blurred into blackness.

A blurry white light gave way to a vanilla-like haze. It was almost clear, but Toby couldn't quite make out the shapes and images surrounding him. His head spun. His chest ached. Yet, he felt a sense of peace in his chest. He was being pulled towards a light. At first, the light was nothing, but then it molded into a familiar shape. The shape became a figure, and the figure had a face, but Toby could barely make it out. If he strained his eyes well enough, he could almost make out a set of brown eyes looking at him. The eyes filled with worry and sorrow. As he looked into those eyes, he felt safe, comfortable, and loved. A hand reached out to stroke his cheek. He reached out to touch the hand. And he did. He touched the hand. It belonged to a woman as did the eyes. Yes! He was sure he was looking at a woman. Could it be? Was it his woman? Was he dead? Is he finally going to reunite with his love? She came into focus only well enough for Toby to recognize the outline of her face and eyes. He could see her mouth moving, but he couldn't make out the words.

"You can't do this," he thought he heard her saying.

"You have to stop." A hand combed through his hair gently. Her touch was so soft it made his eyes well up. "Please stop," the trembling voice begged.

Toby tried to open his mouth to respond to her. To tell her that he misses her. That he loves her. That he wishes more than anything she was back with him. But he couldn't speak. His throat was burning. Suddenly, the woman before him started to lose focus. She was slipping away from him! Again! He reached for her, but she was being pulled away. He cried out. Suddenly, a white flash clouded his vision and was replaced with blackness once again.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Toby began to stir. His eyelids opened, then instantly squinted at the bright lights. These lights weren't as comforting as the ones he had seen before. They hurt his eyes, and the hurt traveled up to his brain. He tried opening them again and this time his eyes landed on a gray wall. He turned his head towards the ceiling when shock took over his body.

"Spencer!" He cried out. Toby bolted up right in his bed. "Spencer!"

A hand reached out to lean him back, but he shoved them away. He pulled off his oxygen mask, ripped out his I.V. and swung his legs over the side of the bed ready to leave.

"Sir," an unfamiliar voice called out. "Sir, you need to get back in bed. Sir!"

"Spencer!" Toby yelled again, completely ignoring the woman.

"Toby," a familiar voice was calling to him this time, but it wasn't the familiar voice he wanted to hear. "Please listen to the nurse."

The nurse tried again to get him to lay down, but he shoved her so hard the nurse fell to the floor. Toby stood up, but two more people he did not recognize came into the room. Another followed with a syringe.

"Sir," he heard a grown man say. "Get back in bed."

"I want Spencer!" Toby screamed.

He felt something poke his side and he started to feel dizzy again. His body slumped back down as two people moved to catch him before he hit the ground. The medical team worked together to get Toby safely back into bed. A nurse put his mask back on and another got another IV going. The person with the familiar voice came to his side and gently stroked his arm.

"It's okay," they said. "It's going to be okay."

"Spencer," he said quietly. His vision began to go again as he felt tears pierce his eyes. "Spencer," he said one last time before falling into a black world slumber.

Toby awoke again. This time his vision came back rather quickly. When he woke, he couldn't understand why he felt calm. He could still feel hurt, sadness, and anger, but those feelings were somehow being overcast by calm. He tried to move but felt restricted. Toby looked down to see that his arms had been put into restraints. He looked around the room until he saw an old friend sitting in a chair in the corner of the room. She had a cup of coffee. She looked pretty well considering the circumstances. Her long black hair dangled over her shoulders. Ripped jeans and a plaid shirt.

"What happened?" He asked.

Emily looked up surprised to see him awake. He thought for a second that she almost looked afraid, but mostly worried.

"We've been trying to find you for a while now," said Emily. "It's been four months since we last heard from you."

Toby turned his head away from her, bitterly he said, "I had somethings to take care of."

"Yeah, I know," Emily stood up. "We all know. You've left quite the blood trail."

"It was only the people that deserved it."

"You killed two people! Noel Kahn and his brother are dead because of you."

"And Spencer is dead because of them!" He barked back. "They had it coming."

Emily shook her head, "I get you're hurting and you're angry. Yes, maybe these people deserve some payback, but what you're doing is wrong! You can't keep going on like this!" When Toby turned his head away, Emily moved so he was in his line of vision. "Spencer wouldn't want you to live like this."

Toby glared at her, "don't tell me what she would want."

"Why?" Emily challenged. "Because you know I'm right?"

Toby looked away again. The room fell silent. Toby scanned his surroundings.

"Where am I?" He asked.

"Radley," Emily said flatly. "A mental hospital. The girls and I pulled some strings to have you admitted here under the ideal that you're insane instead of sending you to prison."

"How did you do that when you're supposed to be in hiding?" Toby asked, with concern.

"I reached out to my dad."

Toby nodded, "I suppose I should thank you for getting me out of that burning house."

Emily shook her head, "no, I didn't get you out."

Toby looked up, "the firefighters must've got there pretty quick then."

Again, Emily shook her head, "they told your doctors that you were laying 10 feet outside the burning house."

Toby was confused. How was that possible? He passed out inside the house. Lucas didn't get him out because Toby remembers watching him escape before he blacked out. How did he get out? There was no way he walked out on his own. Someone had to have saved him. That's when he remembered his vision. His dream. He touched his face where he dreamt Spencer had touched him. He felt a tingle against his skin. He saw her eyes. But it was just a dream. Wasn't it? There's no way…

"When can I get out of here?" Toby asked.

"As soon as the doctors are sure you're no longer a danger to yourself or others."
