Weeks later. India wasn't all alone in the library even though it was night. She is actually with other students without Billy and Olive. The college lets the students spend their study in the library until midnight.
She felt someone touch her shoulder from behind. She turned and there was Professor Duke Van Helsing standing. He smiled down at her.
"I know exactly how to find you, India". he dragged the chair then sat. "I hear you practicing".
She nodded. He spoke again. "Well, erm, we will soon be undergoing our final examination".
"Yes".
"And as you know, the student who scores the highest will be given the opportunity to serve as your research assistant".
Silent. "I see".
"India. You have consistently scored the highest marks in class for every written and oral exam. However my surgical technique leaves much to be desired, yes".
She sighs. "Professor, I can't tell you how often I practice, but the moment the scalpel pierces the epidermis, well my hands begin to tremble".
"I have always found that the secret to a steady hand is a steady heart".
"I don't understand". said India.
"You must believe in yourself, in your abilities to heal others. It is that simple, but I do. If so, then you will succeed. Until then, know this, the heart never lies".
India studies her laps. "Thank you, Professor".
"With pleasure. India?" their eyes met. "I know you can do it. I put my faith in you". he rose up. "Goodnight, India". As he walks.
"Goodnight, Professor". She took a deep breath.
She looked around the library, students starting to leave the library one by one. She looked at her watch, the time already past ten. Quickly gather her things, grab her bag, and walk out before the library is closed.
Outside the building. She has nowhere else to go. How stupid she was, she should tell her mother to pick her up from college. Olive and Billy are busy, where should she find public transport in the middle of the night?
She looked up as the sky rumbling with thunder and lightning. Suddenly the sky was pouring with heavy rain on the ground. She screams annoyingly.
"Seriously! GOD!"
She grabs one of her books to protect her head as she runs towards the nearest building for shelter. She sneezes and hugs herself fighting for the night cold.
Her clothes were completely wet. She doesn't know what to do and how to get home with this heavy rain. She had to go through it.
Her shaking hand reaching her cellphone inside her bag, turns out the battery is dead. She screamed again, cried.
"How could you do this to me! Oh, I hate you GOD!"
The thunder and the lightning seems to hear her cursing. She jolted when the lightning struck the tree right in front of her eyes. She backed away and stayed in silence.
"I'll take the chance".
She was out of her mind. She began to run back home. She can't stand doing nothing, she needs something or someone to help her.
Perhaps a car drove past her on the street that could be better.
"Oh, please God. I'm sorry that I am cursing upon you. Please protect me". she prayed.
She doesn't know where she is. She stopped in the middle of nowhere and completely lost her track. Why the night is so difficult to see compared to a day where she is going.
The place was so dark, only the street light company her walked. The rain is still not stopping but she should continue her walk so that she can get home quickly, but in the meantime she can feel her whole body shivering, cold and blurred eyes.
She has to fight those feelings. "There's no time to faint. Come on India! You can DO IT!"
Half past. She stops again, her sight getting blurring and blank. She blinked to get her sight back. There's no car driving past her yet, no one could help her, she's alone.. and she is so afraid something or someone will try to hurt her while she is alone.
Her feet numb, she had no strength to walk anymore. She was hopeless, without her notice both her knees dropped on the wet ground. She began praying more this time.
"Please god. Must.. get.. home.. quick.."
(Beeping sound) She could hear that sound around her. She even realized she started to breathe, inhaling like a Darth Vader without opening her eyes. She doesn't know where she is now.
Not in Heaven, neither in Hell. So where is she now?
The last thing she knew was that she walked in the middle of the night and then everything went black. She let out a grunt when someone approached her.
"India. Darling. Are you awake? Are you alright? it's okay now, you're safe. You're safe". It was her mother's voice she heard beside her. "Oh, India. Don't you ever do this again".
Slowly she opens up her eyes, a faint smile she gives to her mother. Kim was relieved to see her daughter was safe.
"Where.. am.. I?" she asked.
"You're in the hospital. You didn't know why you were here".
India shook her head, swallowing her own saliva. Her throat is so dry, she needs to drink something.
"Water.. water.. please.. water".
Kim desperately gave India a glass of water. Meanwhile the doctor entered the room, together with Olive behind the doctor.
The doctor checked on hers. "India? I'm doctor Lee Brian. Can you hear me?" she nodded weakly. "You've been unconscious for four day, you have high fever, are hydrated and almost get yourself killed".
Kim sigh, cries. The doctor continued.
"But don't worry you are fine. Someone rescued you from that heavy rain you were in it". he smiles, she snorts and her sight is still blurring. "Get rest. I'll be checking on you later".
Olive then stood beside her bed. "You're alive Bitch. That is what I'm talking about. I'm gonna get going, so relieved to see you awake". she kissed her forehead. "I love you.. see you tomorrow".
"Careful, bitch".
"Bye bitch!"
Kim rolled her eyes. She looked down.
"Hungry? I'll get you food alright". She is about to leave but India stops her. "Do you need anything darling?"
Slowly she gets up from bed, Kim helping her leaning on the bed. Her eyes were swollen.
"How can I end up here?"
Kim smiled. "Mr. Grayson found you unconscious on the street side. He immediately sent you to hospital".
"Mr. Grayson? How did he know where I was? ''.
"He just got back from the town, actually what he'd said. He bought groceries and on the way back he saw a girl laying there, it turned out it was you".
India shook her head, she would not buy the stories Grayson had created. That does not make any sense.
"Mr. Gunner called me soon Mr. Grayson got you in hospital".
Kim smiled, playing with India waving hair. Even though she is sick, her daughter still looks pretty. "We should thank him .."
"No. Come on! No invitation to our house please".
"You try to run away from him aren't you? just what you did last week, you went to carnival and Olive had to break her promise to me. You are a stubborn daughter just like your father, India".
India snorted, sigh. "I hate when you mention him while I'm sick. For me he's dead, he didn't exist in our life, mum. You understand that?"
"We have each other now darling, just you and me". the mother and daughter smile. Kim then buys food at the cafeteria.
Night later. Hospital. Grayson was sitting on the chair beside India's bed, watching her sleep. She didn't flinch as he came to visit her secretly, no one saw or noticed Grayson was coming for a visit.
The visitor shouldn't not be in the hospital after six o'clock, guess Grayson had special abilities where no one else can see him around the corridor.
He's invincible.
"I made my promise that I won't reveal myself who I was. You won't believe it if I say.. because it didn't exist in this century. You are living in your new world while I lived in my past. If you asked me to tell you the truth, it depends. But here, well, I'll tell you now. Nothing has been the same since first I saw you. You're a magic beyond my understanding. I know it's impossible, but you are Josette, come back to me. But you are more than that. You are India too. Now, I've tried to keep my feelings close. But I cannot. You make me want more than I could possibly have".
Grayson cried. His finger trails on her skin.
"My love, Josette. I've been longing to have you in my arms. We belong together forever, that's my promise and you belong to me.."
India jolted from her sleep. She turned on her right where the chair stood, no one.
There was no one sitting on that chair, her eyes quickly searching for the clock. The clock shows her the time, gently getting up from the bed.
She felt hungry and thirsty in the middle of the night. She opens the door, peering at the empty corridor outside the room, no doctor and nurse we're seen.
The coast is clear, she made her way to the elevator. Pushing the button waiting for the door to close, she leaned on the wall.
"How did I end up like this?" she muttered under her breath. As she arrived at the first floor, there was no one at the lobby she could ask for help.
What kind of hospital is this? mean.. please anybody. Where did they go?
"Hello? anyone? hello? I'm hungry that all.. just need to go to the cafeteria. Can anyone show me the way?" she sighs. "Funny. I talked to myself". she bit her lips, walking out from the building.
She took a seat on the bench near the fountain, the weather was nice and cold so she decided to take a walk with the patient gown she was wearing right now.
Hoping sooner she will get someone's attention, she just needs fresh air away from the building. The Smell of medicine inside the building was suffocating.
She then walked aside of the road, her eyes saw something on the surface of the puddle, something that stunned her, calling her to go there closer.
A reflection of the woman she knew trying to reach her arm out from the puddle, India trying to reach the woman's hand but suddenly her life was surrounded with full of darkness.
The next day. Grayson rushed inside the hospital building as he found out from Renfield about her last night. Someone had found her unconscious on the ground side of the road, they carried her back to the hospital.
Grayson got out of the elevator, urging himself inside the room where her mother Kim was there before him.
She cried beside India's bed, he stood facing her bed.. worrying. He gasped, shutting his eyes, then opened as he heard India awakening like she knew his presence around her, her eyes blinking trying to get her sight back again.
Inhale, she looks around the place. Same room for a couple of days.
Kim touched her hair. "India? who did this to you, why-why you were out there alone. Like how?" she didn't answer, her eyes met Grayson.
"Mr. Grayson?" she said, he smiled worriedly. "What are you doing here?"
"I got called. As a neighbor and my student I couldn't.. I couldn't see my student getting sick and I want her to come back as soon as possible".
Kim nodded. India shut her eyes and went to sleep again. Grayson smiled a bit, so glad she was alright. But tonight he will see her again, no one will know he was here for her.
Late at night. Grayson again sat on the chair, studied her face. Remembering that night he found her on the street. India was right about him all along, he wasn't there on purpose, he was there as he been watching her.
There are no groceries involved or going to town or whatsoever.
He knew she would be staying up late to study, so he overheard her conversation with Olive. So he decided to wait outside the building. He had followed her from afar until she was suddenly unconscious. He doesn't want her to know he was stalking.
This is all his fault, he blames himself.
"Mr. Grayson?" his eyes wider, the memory of that night was messed up, shocking to see her eyes staring at him back. He is about to leave but she stops him. "Was it allowed to visit at this time, Mr. Grayson? You keep coming back".
He sits back on the chair, chuckles. "I can't help myself. I am a special visitor. They allow me to see you tonight". he lied. "I brought you another". he pointed at the four roses beside her bed. She smiled.
"So it was you. It's beautiful. Thank you".
Grayson studied her face. "What happened?"
"Uh, I got lost".
"The doctor says you may have a concussion".
"Yes". (clears throat)
"Did you wander outside?"
"No, I didn't. Well of course. I'm hungry so I left. I hate hospitals".
Grayson laugh. "You know, that's gonna be a problem when you become a doctor". both laugh, she feels pain in her head.
"Ow. Don't make me laugh. That hurts".
"I apologize".
"Oh". she sighs, laid flat on bed. "I was hungry. Then I forgot I don't have any money with me". their eyes met again. "Mr. Grayson?"
"Mm-hmm?"
She sighs again. "I hope there is nothing happening between us.. right".
"Why not? we're neighbors. If you wanted to say thank you because I saved you, I would take that compliment".
"About that urm.. (bite her lips) yes, thank you. I mean besides we're neighbors I don't want anything to connect people who will think we are lovers. I don't want that to happen and I don't want to hear from their lips".
Grayson nodded. He gave her a smile. "I don't know. All I can say is... You remind me of somebody I used to love. Her name was Josette". she blink, what a familiar name.
"Josette? I know her". Grayson's sharp eyes met hers. "I have dreamed about her since I was a little girl. She looks like me". he smiled, he knew exactly who she mentioned. His beloved wife. "I saw her last night. I saw her in a reflection in a puddle, and she reached out to me, as if she was going to..."
"Shh. I'm here. I'm right here". calming her down. "You need to rest. I cannot promise your word, if it will happen between us or not. I cannot.." he let out a sigh. "Rest. Your friends need you at college, they've been missing you especially Olive and Billy".
She nodded weakly, he had to stay for her until she went to sleep. After she was fully asleep, Grayson leaned to kiss her on the forehead.
He whispers something at her that she wouldn't remember for the next day.
You're mine no matter what they try to keep us apart. Staring at her face. I belong to you.. and you belong to me.
Grayson gives her another kiss.
