A few days later, Rae hadn't heard from Voight so she started gathering her things to make a trip to the precinct.
Before she could leave the hospital, she was stopped by security, "We have an active stabbing in the building, ma'am. You need to get down and stay safe until we give the all clear," he advised as she helped her creep under the nurse's station.
Rae took a deep breath as she sat in her hiding place, hearing gunshots in the distance, wondering if she'd ever see any of her friends or Voight again.
"Sarge," Jay announced, "We've got an active stabbing at Med. Should we respond or let the team on-site handle it?"
Voight's mind flashed to Rae. He knew she was working and she would be in danger he responded, "We're taking it," he responded as he pulled on his jacket and walked out to hop in his SUV.
Once the Intelligence Unit arrived, Voight was the first out of his vehicle as he made his way to the security guard currently in charge, "What's going on? Have you caught the suspect or is everyone inside still in danger?"
The guard shook his head as he turned to address Voight, "All we know at the moment is that someone was stabbed in the communal area. No one has been apprehended and there hasn't been a second victim," he shared.
Voight nodded as he closed his eyes, knowing Rae was both brave and stupid enough to leave her area of safety to help.
"I'm going in," Voight announced, disregarding the warnings of everyone around him.
Meanwhile, inside the hospital, Rae noticed Dr. Charles was wandering outside of a safe space so she jumped up to join him, "Are we looking for one or yours?" she inquired. They'd become close friends since she'd joined the staff.
Charles shook his head, "They aren't my patient currently, but they could become one. I think you should sit this one out. It's not safe," he added, concern evident in his voice.
"I'd feel a lot better if I could help," she replied, "My anxiety can't handle sitting there in hiding. Tell me what I need to do," she pleaded, causing Daniel to shake his head as he glanced at the floor.
Dr. Charles finally responded, "Ok, if you insist on helping then you need to look for someone whos agitated by this situation. They are our most likely suspects. Don't approach them alone if you find them. Sigal to us and we'll come to you," he instructed, his tone conveying how serious he was.
"I'm on it," Rae nodded as she wandered away to find anyone who fit Dr. Charles' description.
As Rae left the safety of the ED, Voight entered and made a beeline for Dr. Charles, "What's going on?" he inquired.
Dr. Charles turned to face the Sergeant, "We suspect one of the mentally ill patients is in the middle of an episode after being moved multiple times because of the storm. We're grateful for your assistance," he added.
Voight almost resisted asking, but he couldn't, "Do you happen to know where Dr. Anderson is?"
Charles nodded, "She wanted to help. I just sent her off to help find the patient."
Charles' answer caused Voight to glance at the floor, shaking his head, he knew she wouldn't be able to stay out of it. "Can you point me in the direction you sent her?"
Dr. Charles nodded as he pointed, curious about Voight's interest in his coworker as he watched Hank march off in that direction.
Rae moved through the hallways in her search area before she found a woman holding open a door to one of the lower roofs.
"Ma'am, it's not safe out there," she shouted, "Can you come with me?" she asked as she reached out to the woman.
The woman, who was clearly homeless, shook her head, "No, I need to get out of here."
"I understand," Rae replied, "But, you can't leave from there. If you come with me then I can help you get to the right exit. Would you like that?" she asked as she offered her hand to the woman.
The woman seemed to hesitate for a moment before she agreed, noticing that she couldn't leave where she was. She reached out and took Rae's hand who started guiding her back to the entrance of the ED to help her leave a clearly uncomfortable situation.
As Rae and the woman neared the ED, they came face-to-face with Voight, "What are you doing, Rae?" Voight questioned as he moved his hand to rest on the gun holstered on his hip.
"I'm helping this woman out of the hospital," Rae replied, "And, she's nervous so it would be best if we could make this as smooth as possible," she said, in a warning as she realized that this woman was the stabber.
Hank wasn't sure if he should take Rae's lead or not. In all his years, he didn't have enough experience with the mentally ill as he needed to feel comfortable in this situation. He went with his gut as he drew his weapon, "I can't do that, baby. This woman stabbed an innocent man," he stated as he stared the homeless woman down.
The woman shook her head before she pulled out her knife and pulled Rae against her body until she had the weapon against her throat, "You're going to let me out of here. If you don't, then I'm going to kill her."
Rae took a deep breath as she locked her eyes onto Voight's, "Drop your weapon, please," she whispered, almost mouthed to him before she felt the woman walk them forward closer to the exit.
Voight shook his head, "I wish I could, baby. But, this woman needs to answer for her crime," he stated as he watched in horror as the homeless woman pressed her knife deeper into Rae's neck, drawing blood.
"I would have turned her in once I was at the exit," Rae mouthed to Voight before she felt herself being thrown to the ground after the sound of a gunshot rang out.
One of Voight's team was positioned behind them and had a clean shot to take out the homeless woman, releasing Rae.
The woman's knife grazed Rae's neck drawing a small amount of blood as she felt hit the ground while also grasping at the wound.
Voight was at her side in a matter of seconds, holding his handkerchief against her wound, "I'm so sorry, baby. I didn't realize you had the situation under control. I was just trying to protect you," he whispered as he pulled her up and guided her back down the ED to be evaluated.
"My injuries are superficial and I understand why you did what you did. Thank you for coming to my rescue," she replied, her voice hoarse as she grasped his handkerchief to her neck. "You're my hero," she added before she placed a gentle kiss on his cheek.
