Yuki checked the levels of the Reactor. The room thrummed with the life of the engines like the rest of the ship, a constant drone that lulled her to sleep. The long, glowing tubes stretching up the cylindrical contraption bubbled the liquid within in intense heat. Cool air flowed in from the vents, making her shiver. This room was cooler than the other so that the liquid in the Reactor wouldn't overheat and shatter the glass.

She checked the gauges on the long pipes spreading from the Reactor's left and right sides; needles in the green, she moved to the electrical panel. The room sat awash in a light blue glow as she worked, the bright overhead lights turned off for the time being. Wires in order, Yuki turned the lights on and closed the panel. Sighing, she went across the hall to Security.

Her husband sat at the computer, watching for any sign of mischievous activity. As usual, nothing. He jumped when Yuki placed her hands on his shoulders.

"Boo!"

"Yuki!" Yuki giggled.

"Surprised?" Jesse rolled his eyes.

"Do you have to keep doing that?"

"You know, for someone with combat training, you sure don't have good reflexes." Jesse frowned.

"You know how many times I've almost smacked you out of reflex? It's a good thing I recognize your voice." Yuki wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him on the cheek.

"Whatever you say, Bunny." Jesse blushed; he hated that nickname.

"I do say, Sparrow." Now it was Yuki's turn to frown. She hated that nickname, too. She turned to the computer monitor.

"Anything interesting?" she asked, knowing there hadn't been.

"Nope," he sighed.

"Man, who'd have known this job was so boring?"

"Um, I did?" Jesse laughed. "I've been doing this for the last seven years."

"Right," Yuki said. "Say, what do you want to do for our anniversary?" Jesse paused for a moment, leaning back in his chair and holding his chin.

"I don't know," he said. "Picnic?" Yuki giggled.

"Where?"

"The cafeteria," he said as if it were obvious. Yuki shook her head.

"As if. You know how many people would come in there? Besides, it has to be romantic."

"Exactly! Nothing speaks romance like oatmeal and fried noodles." Yuki laughed, his jokes somehow worse than when they met.

"I don't think so."

"Well, what do you think we should do?"

"What about... a movie night? We could set up the projector and use the sheet in our room to display the movie on. We could even have the picnic while we watch the movie." Jesse gave her a sad smile.

"That sounds great." He moved to kiss her on the cheek, but she stopped him with her hand.

"What's wrong?"

Lips still against her hand, he garbled, "What do you mean?"

"You've got that 'I'm sad and don't want to tell Yuki face' on." She softened. "What's wrong?"

"I can't give you an anniversary that you deserve."

"I chose this life, Jesse, and you were thrown into it. We'll do our best with what we have. As cheesy as it sounds, our anniversary will be perfect because we have each other." Jesse gave her a crooked smile. Craning his head, he kissed her on the nose.

"Did I ever tell you that I love you?" Yuki chuckled.

"I have a husband you know."

"He's a very lucky guy."

"I know." She gave him a loving smile, making his heart skip a beat. Turning, he gently grabbed her chin and pulled her to him. She stood behind him, leaning on the back of the chair as they kissed, tender and sweet. Someone cleared their throat behind them, making them jump apart.

Ajani stood in the doorway, wrench in hand.

"I just got back from fixing the Upper Engine," he said. His thick accent distinguished him as one of the few who hadn't lost theirs after the war. Green suit covered in fuel, he looked no less intimidating. Jesse and Yuki blushed. "I thought you might want to know that the electricity has been acting strange. You might need to restart your computer."

"Thank you, Ajani," Jesse sputtered. "Will do." Frowning, Ajani left in the direction of the Lower Engine. Yuki and Jesse broke out into fits of laughter.

"I guess we'll have to be more careful," Yuki said through pants.

"I guess so," he conceded. Laughter dying down, he became more serious. "What do you think his deal is, anyway?"

"Oh, come on, Jesse. Don't be like that. We've all got something."

"Yeah, but he's just so..." Yuki raised an eyebrow. "Grouchy." Yuki smirked.

"And you aren't?"

"What? I'm not grouchy," he said.

"Have you met morning Jesse?"

"I'm a morning person!"

"After you have half an hour to wake up," she teased. Jesse frowned as she ruffled his hair.

"Face it, mister: you're unhappy because someone's after your grumpiness record." Jesse scoffed.

"Oh yeah? We'll just have to see about that." Yuki screamed, breaking into fits of laughter as he picked her up and showered her with kisses. Connected by vents to Security, Hassan shook his head as the couple's laughter filled the Med Bay. Those two will never learn, he thought with a smile.

Taking a vial from the shelf, he placed in its proper compartment connected to the computer. As it analyzed the sample, he couldn't help but wonder if he'd chosen the right profession after all. He could have been a doctor on the ground, but his parents had told him to become an Astronaut. So he did. He worked hard, got into the University, and passed all of his classes. Then, he passed the exam with flying colors. Now aboard the Skeld, he wondered if it was all for naught. They'd told him to find a new world, but he couldn't help but feel he was missing out on the world he desired. His wife came into the bay, holding another set of vials.

Blonde hair tied in a tight bun, she looked no less beautiful in her white spacesuit. She looked up at him through her eyelashes.

"What are you looking at?" she asked flatly.

"Nothing, my love. Did you bring the new samples?" She nodded, bringing them to him. He placed them in the computer, analyzing them all at once.

"Do you think we'll have a chance if this works?"

"We'd better, otherwise this will all have been for nothing." They watched as one of the vials turned a dark purple. The computer blinked red, large letters illuminating the dimly lit room.
