Her last stages of pregnancy went relatively fast, as she stayed home and grew more tired. She had trouble sleeping and her back pain had gotten worse. Not even with Jack's frequent massages she got any relief. She was thoroughly done with being pregnant. She just wanted to have Grace out as soon as possible.
One morning after Jack left to drop Jake in his swimming lessons, Sam started to feel contractions and the most excruciating back ache. When she got up to pick her phone and call Jack her waters broke.
"Oh fuck!", she groaned, picking her cell.
Taking deep breaths, she prayed that Jack answered fast. He did.
"Hi honey", he said.
"Jack, my waters broke", she managed to said between contractions.
"FUCK!", Jack yelled. "I'm ten minutes from home. I'll be there as fast as I can, Sam. Hang on", he said speeding.
Sam let the cell drop on the couch and grabbed the back of the couch for support. That was how Jack found her, breathing heavily.
"I'm here", he said grabbing her arm.
"Take my bag", she said closing her eyes as another contraction hit her.
Jack put the bag on his shoulder and slowly helped her move into the Escalade. He had already called Lisa to let her know they were coming. As soon as she was inside the SUV, Jack speeded to the Mountain, noticing that Sam's breathing had changed to shallow pants.
"We're nearly there, honey", he said, speeding.
Sam was just focused on her breathing, eyes closed.
Fifteen minutes later, she was lying on an infirmary bed while waiting for Lisa to come and examine her. A nurse had already hooked her up to a fetal monitor. Lisa looked at the monitor beside the bed.
"Okay Sam, here comes another one. Remember, deep breaths", she coaxed.
Sam grabbed Jack's hand and squeezed it tightly. Her contractions were coming almost on top of each other now. She was exhausted.
"I can't do this anymore", she said with tears running through her face.
Jack moved his head next to hers.
"Yes you can, Sam. You're doing, fine, just breath. You're almost there, honey!", he whispered in her ear, moving the hairs from her damp face.
Another contraction began to build and Sam squeezed Jack's hand harder.
"God! Lisa I need to push!", Sam yelled.
Lisa came over and did a quick check, smiling.
"Looks like you're having a baby girl, Sam", she said.
Everything moved very quickly after that and after some more pushes, Lisa announced she could see the baby's head. With three more pushes and a lot of Sam's cries, Sam delivered the baby's head. After that she felt a slippery rush and Lisa quickly handled the baby to a waiting nurse. While she clamped and cut the umbilical cord. And then the baby took the first breath and the infirmary heard her first loud cry.
The nurse wrapped the baby in a soft blanket and brought the baby over to a crying and smiling Sam.
"Here Ma'am", she said, extending her arms to allow Sam to take the newborn child.
Sam grabbed her tiny crying daughter that calmed down as soon as she felt her mother warm body. She took one look at the baby she now cradled in her arms and felt immediately in love.
"Hi Grace", she said with tears in her eyes.
"She's so beautiful honey", Jack said putting one hand to touch his tiny daughter.
Sam stroke her face with one finger very gently and she opened her blue eyes. Moving her finger to the little hand, Grace close her tinny fingers over the tip of her mother's finger. Sam's heart swelled with so much emotion she thought her chest might burst.
"Want to hold your daughter, General?", Sam asked her husband.
"Yeah…", was all he managed to say.
Jack sat in the infirmary cradling his daughter with a grin that hadn't left his face since Grace had been born.
"She looks just like you", he said with adoring eyes.
Grace indeed had very blue eyes and the few hairs she had on her tinny head were blond almost white. She was indeed a Mini-Carter.
"Do you want to feed her?", he asked after some minutes of bonding with his daughter.
"Yes, she should be hungry", Sam said adjusting her position in the bed.
Jack passed Grace over to her and Sam lifted her top and placed Grace at her breast. She latched immediately. Like Jake had. Apparently both their children had no problems breastfeeding. At least that. She sighed and watched her daughter eat.
"How are you feeling?", he asked passing a hand through her hair.
"Exhausted but very happy", she said with a smile.
"You were extraordinary. Again", he said kissing her forehead.
Sam grabbed his hand.
"I couldn't have done it without you", she said kissing his hand.
Jack suddenly remembered.
"GOD! I have to pick up Jake!", he said grabbing his cell.
"Ask if Daniel or Cameron can pick him up", Sam told him.
"Good idea", Jack said trying Daniel first. His old buddy said that there was no problem. That him and Vala would pick him up and them would go to the Mountain to visit the most recent member of the Carter-O'Neill family.
"So Daniel and Vala are picking him up and bringing him here. Expect visits", he warned.
"It was a matter of time", she said moving her daughter to her other breast.
After a while Daniel and Vala arrived with a talkative Jake. Who stopped talking when he saw his mother in the infirmary bed.
"Thanks Daniel, I'll take this from here", said Jack picking his son.
"Hi buddy, are you alright?", he asked noticing his son looking very quietly at his mother.
"Mama sick?", he asked.
"No, she's okay. Your baby sister was born today. Want to see her?", Jack asked. Talking very slowly as he started to approach Sam's bed.
Jake nodded.
"Hi Jake", Sam said extending her hand to him.
He grabbed her hand, continuing in his father arms. Then he looked down to where Grace was.
"See this is Grace, your baby sister", Sam said as Jack sat on the bed next to her.
Jake continued very quiet but his eyes were quickly moving from his mother to the sleeping baby in Sam's arms.
"Baby", he finally said.
"Yes, Jake. She's a baby", Sam said.
"Baby can play", he said with a smile.
Jack coughed.
"Yes, buddy, you can play with her but we have to wait a little. She needs to be bigger. Now she's sleeping and she will do a lot of that. Sleeping and eating. That's how she'll get bigger and ready to play with you", Jack explained.
"Okay", Jake said putting one of his hands in her tinny head.
Both Sam and Jack held their breath while he gently caressed his sister's head.
"Baby", he said again.
Sam had tears in her eyes. "Yes, Jake, she's your baby sister", she said sniffling.
Vala who was next to Daniel a little far away from Sam's bed was watching the scene.
"I think I'm going to cry", she said grabbing Daniel's arms tightly.
"Yeah, they are adorable", Daniel agreed.
The sweet moment was interrupted with the arrival of Dr. Bloom who decided it was time her patients got some rest. So she ordered everyone out. Including Jack and Jake. Sam needed to sleep and so did Grace.
"Are you sure she isn't related to Janet?", he asked in Sam's ear.
Sam muffled a laugh.
"I've already asked. No. Just the same style", she said kissing him goodbye.
After everyone had left, Sam finally could take her time with her daughter. Although she was very tired she couldn't stop staring at her. So she just stood there, lying in bed, looking at her sleeping baby. Eventually she also felt asleep.
After the clearance from Lisa, Jack was proudly taking his family home. He had already put a second car seat in both cars. So, very carefully, he put Grace in her new car seat while Jake stood very quiet looking at what he was doing.
"Now Jake you take a good look at her, okay?", he said looking at his three-year old son.
"Okay", Jake said.
After securing his two children, Jack helped Sam get inside the Escalade. She was still a little sore from the labor but very grateful that she had recovered most of her usual movements. No football belly anymore.
"You okay?", he asked as he put her seatbelt.
"Yes dear", she said with a smile.
Jack gave her a quick kiss and closed the door. Then he got inside and drove out of the Mountain and towards their home. He never drove so carefully in his life. Once there, it was a repeat of the movements but the other way around. He only took a deep breath when Sam was finally in their bed with Grace, breastfeeding and Jake at the end of the bed closely watching them.
"Okay, now we just have to stay like this for the next two years", he said siting on the chair they had in the room.
Sam smiled and lowered her head, reminding him of their times at SG-1.
"You don't like my idea?", he asked.
"Oh I like the idea, theoretically. I just have a hard time seeing it in practice", she said trying very much not to laugh.
"I can always lock the bedroom's door", he suggested.
Sam gave him one of her mega-watt smiles.
"Well you can try…", she said.
"It was just a wishful thought", he said sighing.
Sam changed breasts.
"And a very sweet one, honey. But not very practical. We'll manage", she said.
Jack extended his long legs.
"Yeah, I know we will", he said with a smile. All he loved in the world was in that room. He just wanted to keep them safe. Forever.
As soon as Sam's finished feeding their daughter, Jack took her and putting her in his shoulder, started gently rubbing her back to make her burp. It took her just some minutes. After that and with Jake closely watching what his father was doing, Jack changed her diaper and dressed her again. He rocked her gently and then put her in the bassinet, next to Sam.
"Thanks", Sam said with her eyes almost closed.
He gave her a quick kiss, tucking her in.
"Sleep. Come on, Jake. The girls need to sleep", he said picking his son.
"Bye", Jake said waving.
Jack closed the door and went downstairs.
