Author's note: OK so this is a straight idea-to-paper story. I literally thought of the idea and then started writing. There are also a few fan theories or headcanons in here so yet...I hope you enjoy it.

End of Author's note

"Dada." said the little dragon as the sheriff of Maretime Bay, Hitch, who was eating his breakfast.

The stallion froze in shock and looked at the dragon. "Sparky, Did you just speak?" he asked.

"Dada," Sparky said while reaching for the stallion.

Tears began to form in his eyes and he went for the dragon and he gave him a big hug. "Your first word. I wasn't expecting you to actually speak but still. I am so proud of you. I have to tell everypony." with that he raced out the door and darted for the Crystal BrightHouse.

In a matter of minutes, Hitch was at the BrightHouse and ran right through the door startling all the girls. They all looked at him with food in their mouths wondering what was going on.

"Listen to this. Sparky spoke and he spoke his first word," Hitch said excitedly. He then placed Sparky on the ground and said, "Say it again Sparky."

Sparky looked around and when he saw the group of mares he instantly said, "Mama."

"Mama?" Hitch said in confusion.

"AW." all the girls said in unison. The way Sparky said it filled them with joy.

"So sheriff Mama, how does it feel to have your kid say their first word?" Zipp joked.

"Surprised. He said Dada before." Hitch said, still confused.

"Well, then who is he calling Mama?" Pipp asked.

Just then they all noticed him walking towards Izzy and once he was at her he gave her a hug and again said, "Mama."

Hitch and Izzy both blushed at this since the implication was very embarrassing. However neither knew how to correct the little dragon. To him, Hitch was his father and since Izzy dragon sat him a lot it made sense he would view her as his mother. The idea of them being labeled as mom and dad was still a bit embarrassing though.

"Hey, Spark-spark. I am not your mama." Izzy said as gently as she could.

Sparky just stared at her and then repeated, "Mama." he was not understanding.

"Well since that is what he thinks, how about we just let him be until he is old enough to understand." Sunny offered not really seeing a problem with the labels.

Hitch and Izzy were still a bit red but Sunny was right. It was just a label. Something Sparky would call them. It won't mean anything. At least that is what they thought.

Later that day while Hitch was patrolling with Sparky they noticed Izzy doing business at 'Izzy does it." the moment Sparky saw her he loudly said, "Mama."

Quite a few ponies turned to him. Surprised to hear him speak but also surprised he called Izzy Mama. Some even began to whisper, especially the earth ponies who knew how close Hitch was with Sunny. Many expected Sunny to be with Hitch not Izzy, so hearing this did cause some confusion.

Meanwhile, Izzy heard his loud call and looked at him with a blush. She was still not used to being called mama and felt it wasn't deserved after all she was just a dragon sitter, not his actual mother. She didn't even know what a mother was like since she never had one. After thinking of this her blush disappeared and she got a sad expression. She lost her creativity and closed up shop and walked off.

Hitch noticed her sudden change in mood and thought maybe she really did hate being called mama. He thought maybe she hated the implication of it.

In this instant, he felt a weird prick in his heart. It was very unusual and something he never felt before. He was confused about the feeling but one thing was clear: he was worried for the unicorn and wanted to check up on her.

Since Sparky might be part of the problem and Hitch didn't want Sparky around for the conversation he went to Sunny and asked her to dragon sit until he returned. After hearing his reason Sunny agreed and wished him luck.

Hitch went back to the brighthouse and Izzy was at the cliff behind the Brighthouse watching the sea. She was so quiet and since it was Izzy Hitch knew something was wrong.

Since Hitch was not used to cheering up anyone but Sunny he was nervous. "Ok, Hitch take it easy. Just ask what is wrong and do your best to help. " He told himself to try to pump himself up. He took a deep breath and walked up to her. "Hey… Izzy?"

She turned to face him and it was apparent she had been crying. She wiped the tears away and smiled at him, "hey Hitch. What's up?" she said, trying to act normal.

"Are you ok?" Hitch said with concern.

"I am fine. Just…" Izzy began before looking at the sea again. "...Unsure. I guess."

"About what?" Hitch asked.

"Me being Sparky's mother." She said, This statement made Hitch's heart beat and he got a bit red.

"W-what makes you unsure about it? Do you hate being called mama that much?" Hitch asked. Asking this saddened him for some reason but he had to know.

"It's not that. I just don't know if I should. I mean to tell you the truth I never had a mother or father if I am honest." She said with a sad expression on her face.

"Really. I didn't know that." Hitch said in surprise.

"Well Alphabittle and his family were like family to me but I never had a real one. At least I don't think I did. Because of that, I am not sure I can be a mother. I barely pass as a dragon sitter." She said, chuckling to herself.

"I say you do great and I think you can be his mother," Hitch said, walking up to her and sitting down next to her.

"Really?" Izzy said with doubt.

"Yeah. The fact Sparky called you Mama proves that. He sees you as a motherly figure. And you care for him don't you?" Hitch asked.

"Of course. I love the little guy." Izzy said with a smile.

"Well, that is all you need. To be a parent you need genuine love and care for the child, in this case, Sparky."

"What about Sunny, Zipp, and Pipp," Izzy asked since they all love and care for him too.

"They could be mothers too. Not all families only have one mother or one father. But Sparky called you mother so you are the one he thinks of as a mother. The others might be something like sisters, aunts, cousins, or some other family members. Just like with being a parent to be a family you need love and care." Hitch said.

"Does that mean Alphabittle and his family are my family?" Izzy asked.

"Well, do you love and care for them?" Hitch asked.

"They are very important to me. Before I met you guys they were the most important. So I guess yes." Izzy asked.

"Then yes," Hitch said.

Izzy thought about it and smiled. She was happy to finally realize she had a family. A real one. "Thanks, Hitch," she said looking at him with a bright smile.

At that moment Hitch finally figured out his weird feelings. He was surprised with himself since they did not start out on good terms but it was true. He realized he liked Izzy. However, he wasn't sure if she liked him too. But thinking about her blush when Sparky first called her mama he wondered.

"So Izzy, there is one more thing I wanted to ask," Hitch said nervously.

"What?" Izzy asked in confusion.

"Do you hate the implication of me being the father and you the mother?" Hitch asked with red cheeks.

Izzy instantly blushed and stuttered, "N-n-no. N-not really. I-I mean it is a bit embarrassing but it is not too bad." She said,

"Why?" Hitch said still nervous but kind of happy with the development.

Izzy looked away but her ears were still obviously red. "B-b-because…" she stuttered but she could not get it out.

Hitch found her cute at this moment but didn't like the uncomfortable feeling he was giving her so he came out and said, "I like you."

Izzy was so focused on getting her thoughts together that she didn't really hear him. "What?"

"I like you, Izzy," Hitch said again, looking at her with as much seriousness he could give with a face as red as a tomato.

"R-r-really?" Izzy said, stunned. Hitch just nodded. "That's great," she said with a bright cheering smile. "I was so nervous I was wrong." she calmed down and looked at him, "I didn't want to destroy our friendship so I never could bring it up but I like you too."

Hitch took a sigh of relief. He was so nervous he was wrong but now he was so glad he was right.

"By the way, where is Sparky?" Izzy asked.

"With Sunny," Hitch asked. "Which reminds me I better get back."

"I will join you. Better thank Sunny for watching him for us. I also better open up shop again too."

With that, the two took their time walking back to Sunny's cart. They talked all the way there mostly about random things. They had fun with their talk and other ponies took notice. Some even began to admit that the couple could be cute and secretly wished them luck.

The moment they made it to the cart Sunny asked, "That took longer than I thought. Everything okay, Izzy?"

"Everything is fine now. Thanks, Sunny." They couldn't help but look at each other and blush. Sunny noticed and got a sneaky grin.

"So you finally confessed, right?" She said, They both instantly got red and Sunny laughed. "Good for you. Well, I better get back to work." She said passing Sparky off to a still-red Hitch.

"T-thanks." He said taking the dragon into his hooves.

"Dada," Sparky said, giving him a hug. He then reached over to Izzy who was also still red and said, "Mama." Izzy looked at him and the three went in for a group hug before they went their separate ways for the day.
