It was now dark outside and the camp illuminated with torches and the full moon, to be honest and made for a perfect atmosphere given that we were going to see a monster of some kind I certainly got a chill like what you'd get from watching a horror movie. We arrived at a tent with several armed guards and I don't just mean lightly armed either, they are the thing could jump up any minute kind of armed guards with grenade launchers and what looked to be high-powered rifles. as we entered the tent and approach the table Regina let out of gasp and covered her mouth while I just stared at the creature. It looked like an emaciated hairless human with sharp jagged teeth that stood probably 6 or 7 ft tall when on two legs however the way it's joints were bent it indicated that it often must have traveled on all fours.
"A Wendigo?!" I said admittedly a little louder than I intended which caused Caesar and Lanius and Regina to look over at me equally surprised.
"So you have heard of this creature master." Regina asked with a look of amazement and I think admiration I really couldn't tell with this girl.
"Well sort of I mean it's not supposed to be anywhere near this side of the country." I said The three of them listen to me with bated breath, "It's supposed to be over in and around West Virginia. I don't think..."
I stopped talking because I had to collect my own thoughts the more I thought about it the more I realized fallout 76 made almost no sense at times like why there were so many creatures from folklore appearing I mean they used FEV for a lot of them but creatures like the windigo weren't products of FEV at least to my knowledge. The game is set 25 years after the bombs dropped so it's theorized by fans that either these creatures didn't last long after that point in time or they we're just products of different genetics around that area in particular. If that was the case could there have been other cryptids from all over the country given how much folklore there is who's to say that in this world they didn't exist at one time under the right conditions. West Virginia in particular was full of different cryptids and creatures that appear from time to time, many of which my Grandpa told me about when I would stay with him when I was little given that he was from there specifically up in Appalachia where fallout 76 took place.
"Well this thing was if my knowledge holds out a human at one time." I said which earned another gasp from Regina and troubled and disturbed looks from Caesar and Lanius.
"I've been avoiding the subject but how do you know about our world specifically." Caesar asked which at this point I wasn't surprised.
When I first arrived in this world and met Caesar and Lanius I was so surprised that I kind of let it slip that I knew about their war with NCR and the shady Lord of New Vegas Mr House as well as there were mutated creatures. Now that I actually think about it I should have held off on some of that info but hindsight is hindsight you can't really change what's been done.
I didn't know how much info I should give them as too much would have likely led to them keeping me on a shorter leash. I started with what a video game was fortunately they had some Tetris and simple games in this world, but it took a bit more of an explanation to tell them the scope of it. I couldn't tell if they were amazed or horrified that their lives and everything in the world was recorded and is being sold for entertainment in my world, but I couldn't blame them considering that if there was a book about my life where people were laughing at all the embarrassing for painful moments I've had I'd probably want to crawl in a hole and die. I did tell them that there's likely several differences given that the windigo was never in any of the other games aside from one called fallout 76 and it was likely that there were several other differences as well which did make them look a little better about it that it wasn't exact.
"How does it end." Regina said causing us to stare at her before Lanius and Caesar look to me expectantly.
It's a surprise that she was the one to ask but this was the question I was dreading from the beginning should they learn the truth. Well the explanation was easy enough to answer with a simple no one wins, The reason I love fallout New Vegas above all the other ones was probably because it was the most realistic in terms of a "hero" given that no matter what you do in the game there's suffering there's no real winner in the whole conflict. I explain to them that even if the legion comes out on top and Caesar is cured of his illness everything is open-ended, so even if by chance one of the four endings were to come to pass there would still be suffering on all ends from casualties to completely uprooted settlements so in the grand scheme the choices were just what you thought was the best option for New Vegas and its individual settlements. As I finished my explanation of the basics of the four endings I made sure to leave out companion endings as in reality most of the companion endings had a little effect on any major faction. In truth I only put in the major details of the individual endings.
"So can't you just pick what you believe to be the best ending helping the people who you want to help." Caesar asked clearly absorbing the information I gave him.
"There has already been confirmed differences between this world and the game I played so in reality none of those endings stand to be true at all and focusing on them is just a waste of time." I said which seems to put their minds at ease a little at the very least I wasn't going to try and screw them over, "In truth the game fallout New Vegas only had one protagonist and according to you there's going to be four."
"The game did not feature The four heroes?" Lanius asked.
"No, in truth there was another series that featured a similar concept this was a book and an anime." I said realizing that they probably didn't know what anime was, "It was a Japanese cartoon I don't know if you had them in this world or not."
Caesar shook his head having never heard of it probably but other than that it seems they're questions were appeased but next Caesar looked at me seriously and asked, "I have one more question. What do you really think of the legion?"
"To be honest I don't like the idea of slavery nor do I like the idea of brutal torture and executions because people have problems." I say bluntly to the point that I caught a gasp from Regina and even Lanius made a sound I guess at how blatantly I said to Caesar himself that I don't agree with him, "However I do understand The legion because I'm not some stupid idealist that thinks wars are won on principle and belief and that you keep the women in a low place assigning them roles as breeding stock because you need soldiers not because you particularly hate them or think of them is a lower species.
"So you will still help us." Caesar asked looking a little more relieved as I could tell he already knew what my answer would be.
"Yes, I've already said I would help you because I know that there are civilians and innocent people in your territory I already said that I would do that much." I said walking over to the table with the wendigo, "However I think you know that there's going to need to be a ceasefire considering a war on every side as well as the waves of monsters coming will make the war pointless if everyone dies anyway."
"I've already considered that and sent a messenger requesting an audience with the leaders of both New Vegas and the NCR president Joe McClintock."
"Well that's another difference between our worlds already I think it was Kimball in the game."
"That's good, every difference is a weight off my mind."
"Is that all the questions you had?"
Lanius stepped forward and said, "I have one question, after all you said that there was no mention of the holy weapons in fact all you talked about is the ending to the story. What did the game itself entail?"
"The game starts off with your character getting shot in the head and then after you wake up in the doctor's office in good springs you go about creating your character and assigning their stats." I say a kind of absent-mindedly naming off the start of the game something I'd done before, "after that you get wrapped up in a conspiracy involving a particular item where it will take you all across the Mojave wasteland from the NCR to Mr House's faction to the legion."
"Your character is shot in the head and then revived?" Lanius asked for the sake of clarification cuz let's be real even back in my world that would be pretty unlikely.
"The gist of it is don't take it too seriously I mean he was dug up by one of Mr House's securitons that he had stationed in goodsprings after being shot in the head and buried in a shallow grave." I said shrugging my shoulders cuz even I'll admit it didn't really make sense, "All in all a nameless courier has to deal with deciding the fate of an entire wasteland I mean let's be real for a sec anyone in that position due to a twist of Fate shouldn't have anyone question them no matter how bad it turns out."
"I agree, master Derek there's no way someone could be forced into that situation and come out without having to make some hard choices." Regina said looking at me with some sympathy.
I couldn't help but smile a little at Regina she might have been a slave but she wasn't the stereotypical ignorant and kept in the dark girl that you think of when you hear the words slave she really did think for herself and that's why bringing her along is a good idea. With Lanius and Caesar satisfied with my answers they allowed me to get to the wendigo that laid lifeless on the table.
