The morning sunlight caused small splattering of colors on the walls and floor when Daryl opened his eyes and he looked over at the mattress to his left. He saw Caroline was missing as his heart slammed in his chest and he sat up.
"Over here," made him look at the trunk and Caroline was looking through the trunk.
"What'd you find?" Daryl asked as he placed on his work boots. He stood up as he walked to his sister and she looked up at him.
"Found some clothes," Caroline said as she showed him the gray shirt, a black denim jacket, a black woolen scarf and a clean pair of jeans. "Look like they'd fit you."
"What's wrong with what I'm wearin' now?"
She gave him an annoyed look when she removed a backpack and she placed the backpack on the floor. She then removed a white shirt, a black denim jacket, a black woolen scarf, a black flat cap and a clean pair of jeans from the trunk and she placed the flat cap on her head.
"Why do you want us to change clothes?" Daryl asked.
"It's so we blend in with the crowd. We kind of stick out wearin' these."
"Hmph."
They changed clothes and Caroline placed her leather jacket, the shoelaces Daryl had tied around the legs of his jeans and Daryl's leather vest with the wings on the back in the backpack. She had also found the double capper acorn in his shirt pocket and she wrapped the double capper acorn in a cloth before placing the cloth in the backpack. She then rubbed the wooden cross before placing the leather cord around her neck and she closed the backpack.
"Ready to go?" Daryl asked.
"Yeah," she said, placing the backpack on her back. Daryl opened the door as they left the room and Caroline saw another wooden basket near the door. "Think we should open it?"
"Nah," he said and they headed down the hallway. Daryl walked to the front door as he opened the door enough to look outside then he opened the door a little wider. They walked outside then headed down the alleyway and Caroline saw some Macabre bodies lying on the ground. They saw the wounds to the Macabre heads and Daryl took hold of Caroline's right hand. They headed out of the alleyway as people walked by them and Daryl looked toward the docks. "Think we should try our luck and go back to the dock."
They started walking down the sidewalk when Caroline saw a small cart with pastries and small rolls filled with cheese and roasted chicken and she pointed to the small cart.
"Do we have any money?" Daryl asked.
"Yeah. I found some money in the basket Nanette gave us," Caroline said.
They walked to the cart as an old woman with gray curls, a round face and sparkling brown eyes smiled at them. She handed Caroline two of the small rolls wrapped in wax paper after Caroline talked to her and Caroline nodded. Caroline walked to Daryl as she handed him one of the small rolls and they headed down the sidewalk.
"See? Told you changin' our clothes would work," she said and Daryl nodded, biting into the small roll. They kept walking when a strong feeling moved through them and they stopped. "Did you feel that?"
"If you mean the feelin' like we should go back the way we came? Yeah, I felt that," Daryl said.
They turned around as they headed back to the carts and Caroline bought some supplies, four knives with holders, some food and bottles of water from the sellers. Daryl placed the supplies, food and bottles of water in the backpack and they strapped the holders to their belts. Daryl checked the knives as he nodded his head and they placed the knives in the holders.
"Which way do you wanna go?" Caroline asked.
"That was sounds good," Daryl said as he pointed down the road and they started walking.
Down on the docks, the men removed the bodies of Trask and the two men who had gone with him to the inn from the cart and the blood from the deep gashes in their necks, the bullet wounds in their chests and the deep gashes on the sides of their heads stained the front of their shirts, their faces and their necks.
Alexandria
Carol walked down the stairs when she entered Daryl's room and she walked to the couch. She saw his old poncho on the couch as she picked up the poncho, sat down and held the poncho in her hands. She felt the tears in her eyes as she held the poncho to her chest and she sighed. The soft sound of flutes, drums and chanting filled the room and she wiped the tears from her eyes.
"Hello, Jeb," Carol said.
"Hello," Jeb said as he stood on the other side of the coffee table.
"Any word on Daryl and Caroline?"
"Not yet. How about you?"
"We believe they were attacked and taken somewhere by truck."
"Got any idea where the truck went?"
"The tire tracks led east."
"There's a lot of places east of here. Like that base near the ocean."
"You mean Oceanside?"
"Yeah."
"Hmmm…"
"What are you thinkin', Earth Mother?"
"That I need to go to Oceanside."
"Well, you better take some backup."
"Don't worry. I will."
The sounds of drums, flutes and chanting faded while Jeb faded and Carol looked at Daryl's poncho. Nodding, she placed the poncho on the couch, headed for the stairs and ran upstairs.
France – unknown location
Daryl adjusted the straps on the backpack as they walked down the road and Caroline looked for signposts.
"Got any idea where we're gonna spend the night?" Caroline asked.
"Nope," Daryl said with a shake of his head.
"Wish we had our bikes."
"Yeah."
They came to a signpost as Caroline looked at the map and she wished the man she loved had taught her how to read French.
"Shit," she whispered.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"I can speak French, but I can't read it."
"Great."
She looked at the map when she found the road they were on and the town they had left and she moved her right index finger to the left.
"Looks like there might be a small town in that direction," she said as she pointed left. They started walking when Daryl looked at her and he sighed.
"You told me that man of yers and his brother took you to yer first Halloween party," Daryl said and she snorted a laugh.
"Yeah, they did," Caroline said.
"Where was the party?"
"It was where they worked."
"Where was that?"
"They worked at a meat packin' plant."
Boston
Caroline watched the horror movie when she heard a soft knock on the door and she got off the couch, turning off the television. Someone knocked again when she walked to the door and she looked through the eyehole. She saw Connor and Murphy standing in the hallway and she could barely see that they were dressed in black sneakers, black jeans, black leather belts, black sweaters, black knit caps and their black Navy pea coats.
"What the hell?" she whispered and she moved the handle of the bolt lock back, removed the chain and opened the door.
"Trick or treat!" they said at the same time and she smiled.
"What are you supposed to be?"
"Longshoremen," Murphy said.
"Oh-key."
"Look, we know you're still not used t'goin' out. But we were wondern' if you'd like t'go t'a Halloween party," Connor said.
"I don't have a costume."
"We thought of that," Murphy said with a grin. She moved back as they went inside her apartment and she closed the door. She walked to them when she saw the black Navy pea coat hanging over Connor's left arm and he was holding onto a black knit cap. "Do you have any black clothes?"
"Yeah."
She walked to the dresser when she removed her black jeans and a black sweater and she found her black ankle boots next to the dresser.
"Close yer eyes," she said. She watched them close their eyes then turn around and she quickly got dressed. She walked to Murphy when she tapped his back and he turned, looking at her. He nudged Connor as Connor opened his eyes and he smiled.
"Right," Connor said as he placed the black knit cap on her head, carefully tucking her hair under the black knit cap, then he held out the black Navy pea coat. She put the black Navy pea coat on when she buttoned the coat and Connor pointed to the door. She picked her purse off the coffee table when she checked to see if she had her keys and they left the apartment.
A short time later, Connor led the way as they headed for the meat packing plant while Caroline looked at the other people dressed in costumes and Murphy had his right arm around her shoulders. He felt her shaking as he pulled her a little closer and she smiled at him.
"Now…," Connor said as he turned to look at them and he started walking backwards. "Th'main party is in th'cafeteria, but there is a haunted house set up in th'plant."
"Oh-key," Caroline said with a grin.
"I don't think that's a good idea," Murphy said as he looked toward the plant. "I heard one of th'guys is gonna be dressed as this mad butcher."
"So?" Connor asked.
"He has a meat clever in one hand and…"
"And what?"
"He has a meat hammer in th'other."
Caroline's body stiffen as she glanced at her right hand and her fingers started twitching.
"Right!" Connor said as he moved her toward him and he pulled her into a hug. She slid her arms around him as he held the back of her head in his left hand and he rocked her. "We'll jus' go to th'party."
"But only if you wanna," Murphy said.
"I felt so guilty. They just wanted me to have a good time," Caroline said. Daryl moved to placed his left arm around her shoulders and she leaned into him.
"What did you do?" Daryl asked.
Boston
Caroline followed Connor and Murphy as they walked in the cafeteria and they took turns introducing her to the people they worked with. She looked at the costumes the people were wearing while music played over the speakers and Murphy led her to the table where the caterers had set up the food. They filled their plates with what they wanted to eat as Connor walked closer and he balancing three plastic cups between his fingers.
"Take one before I drop 'em," Connor said.
"What'd you get?" Murphy asked.
"Two beers and some soda fer Caroline."
"I like beer," Caroline said and Connor rolled his eyes.
"Now you tell me," Connor said and they laughed.
As the night wore on, Caroline danced with Connor or Murphy, both of them stayed close to her while talking with someone or ate something and she admitted she was having a great time. She did see people going outside and Connor told her it was either for a smoke break or they were going to the haunted house.
"Let's go," Caroline said and they gave her a sad look.
"I thought you were havin' a good time," Murphy said.
"I am. I… I just wanna go to the haunted house."
"You sure?" Connor asked.
"Yeah."
Smiling, Connor and Murphy placed their arms around her shoulders and they went outside. They followed some other people going to the haunted house when they went inside the meat packing plant and the scary music filled the air. The flashing lights cast a red glow around the room and Murphy held her close to his left side. They walked on as people wearing bloody face makeup and clothing jumped out at them and Murphy and Connor snickered when one of their friends screamed in a high pitch scream.
"Bet he pissed himself," Connor whispered and they laughed.
They were near the end of the haunted house as they headed around the corner then they saw the exit light and a sign which read THE MAD BUTCHER in red paint was to their left. They heard screams as people walked by them after going to see "the Mad Butcher" and the people were laughing. Murphy looked at Caroline as she tried to decide where she wanted to go then she stood straighter.
"Let's go," she said. Connor and Murphy nodded as they headed toward where The Mad Butcher was and the screams grew louder. They came to a stop when they saw the man dressed all in white with a wild white wig on his head and blood covered most of the clothing standing in front of a large table. He had a large, bloody clever in his right hand and he glared at them as they walked closer. Fake human body parts were either on the floor or on the tables and Murphy moved Caroline to one side to stop her from stepping in the blood.
"Hey, Bobby," Connor said with a grin.
"Hey, Connor," Bobby Williams said, looking at Caroline. "Who's this?"
"This is Caroline," Murphy said, pulling her against him.
"She's Murphy girlfriend," Connor said.
"Ah," Bobby said as he wiped off his right hand and he held his hand out. "Pleased to meet you, Caroline."
"Pleased to meet you, too," Caroline said, shaking hands with him.
"I thought you were supposed t'have two weapons," Connor said.
"I was, but they couldn't find the meat hammer," Bobby said.
They talked for a while when Murphy looked to see people walking closer and he looked at Bobby.
"Well, we better get goin'," Murphy said as he pointed to the people walking toward them.
"Right," Bobby said with a nod then he smiled at Caroline. "Night, Caroline."
"Night," Caroline said with a nod.
"After we left the haunted house, we decided it was time to go home," Caroline said with a sigh and Daryl hugged her shoulders.
"What did you do after you got home?" Daryl asked.
"We went to their apartment. Connor ordered a pizza and we watched a horror movie."
"Then what?"
Boston
"Well….," Connor said as he stood then stretched his arms over his head and Caroline could just see his lower back after his shirt rose up. "I'm goin' t'bed."
"Then I better get goin'," Caroline said as she stood up and Murphy looked up at her. He stood as they headed for the door and he opened the door.
"Let me walk you home," Murphy said.
"What is this? Th'fuckin' eighteen hundreds? She jus' lives down th'hall. Ain't like she's gonna get mugged or summat," Connor teased.
"Shut it."
Caroline tried not to smile as they left the apartment and headed down the hallway. She removed the key from her purse when she unlocked the door, turned and she locked eyes with Murphy.
"I really had a nice time," she said and he smiled.
"Me, too," Murphy said.
"Guess you'll be wantin' these back," she said as she removed the knit cap and the black Navy pea coat then she held them out to him.
"No. They're yers."
Nodding, she opened the door then paused and he waited for her to say something.
"Um… Does this count as a date?" she asked.
"Why?"
"It's just that… It's just that I never dated anyone before. I mean I have had guys ask me out, but… Jessie… She would run them off. Told them I wasn't worth their time."
She saw the anger in Murphy's eyes as he flexed his fingers in and out and she sighed. He moved closer as she started backing up then stopped when he shook his head.
"I ain't gonna hurt you," he said while he placed his hands on her shoulders and placed his forehead against hers. "T'answer yer question. Yeah, this was a date."
"Does that mean Connor was our chaperone?"
"If you wanna see it that way."
"Do you wanna go on another date?"
"Yeah, I do."
"Connor wouldn't mind if it was just us?"
"Nope."
She locked eyes with him when he leaned closer and he gently kissed her left cheek. He moved back as she smiled at him then he tapped the tip of his right index finger on the tip of her nose. She watched him walk back to his apartment when he went inside then she turned, going into her apartment.
"Ok. Laugh," she said and Daryl looked at her and Caroline started walking faster down the road.
"I wasn't gonna laugh," Daryl said as he half-ran to catch up with her.
"You were smilin'."
"I was smilin' because you look so damn cute while you were talkin' about it," Daryl said while they walked side-by-side.
Caroline knew Daryl could tell when someone was bullshitting him and he also knew she was a lousy liar. Not by what she said, but how her face shifted when she was lying.
"Did you two go out on any more dates?" he asked.
"Yeah," Caroline said.
"Did Connor go with you?"
"Only if he had a girlfriend or if he wanted to be a pain in the ass and tease us."
Caroline felt some uneasiness coming from Daryl and he wiped his face with his hands.
"Got somethin' to say to me?" Caroline asked, looking at him.
"Just thinkin'," Daryl said.
"About what?"
"You, me, Murphy and Carol goin' out on dates together."
"Are you sayin' you'd be glarin' at Murphy so he didn't do anythin' and ignorin' Carol while we were out on our dates?"
"Yeah."
"Bet Carol would have loved that."
Daryl went silent as he thought about Carol and they walked in silence.
"Sorry," Caroline said.
"No. It's ok," Daryl said and Caroline lightly nudged his left side as she smiled,
"You're a great big brother," Caroline said.
"Stop," he said and they headed down the road. The sound of jingling bells made them stop while a wooden cart being pulled by a large, brown horse moved down the road and they saw the man sitting in the driver's seat. The man was tall, had lean, but muscular build and he had black hair and dark brown eyes. He was wearing a black denim jacket, a white shirt, black suspenders, black pants and black work boots and he had a black felt hat on his head.
They moved to get out of the way of the cart as the cart moved by them and the man nodded his head. They nodded back then started walking, but Caroline felt like she should turn around. Turning, she saw the cart had stopped and the man was looking back at them.
"He's watchin' us," Caroline whispered and Daryl glanced behind them.
"Just keep walkin'," Daryl whispered.
They kept walking as the sound of the cart and horse came closer and Daryl stopped, turned and saw the man had turned the cart around and was following them.
"Shit," Daryl grumbled and he slid his right hand for the handle of the knife. Caroline already had the knife in her right hand and they went into a defense position. The man stopped the horse as he looked at them and he placed his forearms on his thighs.
"Are you lost?" the man asked in French.
"He wants to know if we're lost," Caroline translated then she looked at the man. "We are a little lost."
"You speak French?"
"Yes."
"Where are you heading?"
"Nowhere really. We're just travelin'."
"Not that many have the guts to do that since the world fell."
"Guess we like to live dangerously," she said with a grin and the man laughed.
"My name is Luc. What's yours?"
"Caroline. Daryl," she said as she pointed to Daryl.
"You two are family, yes?"
"Yes."
"Thought so," Luc said as he leaned back and looked up at the sky. "There is a town not far from here. But it will be dark before you reach it."
"I heard that it's not a good idea to be out at night."
"That is true. It's when the Macabre walk."
"Is it mostly at night?"
"Mostly. Though we have had sightings of them during the daytime."
"Do you know of a place where we could stay?"
"Yes. If you want, you can stay at my home. It's not far from here."
"He says we can stay at his place if we want to," she said to Daryl and Daryl frowned.
"You sure that's a good idea?" Daryl asked.
"Beats walkin' to the next town in the dark."
"Are you sure it's alright fer us to stay with you?" Caroline asked in French as she looked at Luc.
"Yes," Luc said.
They headed for the cart as Daryl sidestepped the horse and Luc noticed the slight worry in Daryl's eyes.
"You're afraid of horses?" Luc asked as he looked at Daryl.
"He had a bad experience with a horse once," Caroline said and Luc nodded.
"You can place your backpack in the back."
Caroline pointed to the backpack then the cart and Daryl placed the backpack in the back of the cart before he climbed up onto the small bench. He reached down for Caroline's left hand as he helped her onto the cart and she sat next to him on the small bench. Luc watched them then turned, clicked the reins and the horse headed down the road.
Oceanside
The gates opened while the carriage headed by the gates and Carol, Ezekiel, Judith and RJ looked out the windows. Several Commonwealth soldiers were on either side of the carriage and behind the carriage and they were armed with rifles.
"Whoa," RJ said after seeing the ruined buildings, the smashed boats and the scattering of waterlogged Walker bodies on the ground.
"Did Hornsby do all this?" Carol asked while she looked at Ezekiel.
"Yes. From what Aaron and Jerry were able to get out of Luke, Hornsby came in and destroyed the place," Ezekiel said.
The carriage came to a stop as one of the Commonwealth soldiers opened the door and Ezekiel got out of the carriage. Ezekiel helped RJ and Judith out of the carriage as he smiled at them and they smiled back. Carol got out of the carriage as she looked toward the water and she wondered if the people who took Daryl and Caroline brought them to Oceanside.
"Governor," the soldier walking closer said with a small nod.
"I need to know if any strangers have been seen in Oceanside over the last few weeks," Ezekiel said.
"Not since Captain Trask and his crew were here."
"Who is Captain Trask?"
"He's just this cargo runner. Governor Milton…"
The soldier cleared his throat from the cold look Carol and Ezekiel gave him and he pressed his lips into a thin line.
"Governor Milton used this place to ship cargo?" Carol asked.
"Yes, Ma'am," the soldier said with a nod.
"And this Captain Trask? He was here recently?" Ezekiel asked.
"Yes, Sir."
"What is the name of his ship?"
"It's the Blue Dolphin."
"Did he take any cargo onboard his ship?"
"Not that I know of."
"Did he log in at the command center?"
"Yes, Sir."
Nodding, Ezekiel motioned for Carol, RJ, Judith and the Commonwealth soldiers to follow him and they headed for the command center building.
