Chapter 15 - No Return
Mobius was on his way to Renslayer's office when he caught her coming out from behind the golden doors of the Time-Keepers' dwelling. He jogged to catch up to her, she was walking fairly quickly.
"Hey! Ravonna!" he said just as he got to her side. She slowed so he could match her speed but she couldn't look at him.
"Have you seen C-20?" he asked her, but she refused to answer. "Hey … are you okay?" he asked sensing her anxiety.
"No, no, Mobius. I'm not. Under the best of circumstances, it's jarring to stand before the Time-Keepers. And this is not the best of circumstances," she spat quickly in a low tone so no one else could hear.
"Well, what happened? This wouldn't have anything to do with Loki?" he asked walking next to her down the hallway. She stopped abruptly to face him.
"Yes Mobius!" she hissed through her teeth. He blinked at her confused.
"Ravonna … he made a mistake … he's doing fine now-"
"Do you have any idea how impossible it is to keep the timeline stable? The Time-Keepers are all that stand between us and full-scale calamity," she whispered harshly.
"And I'm glad they're on our side. But his slip up didn't even make a branch on the timeline," he said calmly. She still could not look at him. He put his hands in his pockets scanning her face with his bright blue eyes. "Did something else happen? Hunter B-15 told me she was assigned to one of my missions, but I don't recall putting her on one recently," he started. Judge Renslayer looked around the hallway carefully. Everyone seemed to be minding their own business.
"That's because I did Mobius," she uttered. His face dropped.
"What? Why? Without telling me?" he asked sincerely. She pulled him aside so they were not so exposed.
"I sent her to the wizarding world first Mobius … it was standard procedure, but she never came back … that's when that wizard showed up," she whispered. The agent's eyes grew wider. Dumbledore had used her TemPad, the agent realized.
"What …" he breathed.
"Other than the Time-Keepers, no one knows about this … We don't want people to panic. Can I trust you to keep that between us?" she asked sincerely. Mobius finally understood why she was on edge.
"Of course. Yes. I'm sorry." he said quietly. The agent hoped he didn't send Loki on a suicide mission.
