Hello! Ducky's back and ready to share another chapter with you all! Thanks for popping by. Before we get into it, I'd like to know, after this chapter, should I keep doing POV? Let me know what y'all think.
Alright, enough chat, let's get straight into chapter 5!
Sunny's (POV)
The rainfall is still steady and shows no signs of relenting. I sigh, knowing I'll be trudging in this awful weather for who knows how long.
The two SkyWings, who we later learned that their names were Carmine and Valley, told us to run. We decide to run towards the Rainforest Kingdom. They might be of help.
My scales are soaked to the point where they're slippery and ears and wings are sagging, tail dragging on the rain-washed, very muddy jungle floor. My talons are so cold they can barely feel the mud beneath them. I long for the desert, even though I've never been. I bet the heat there is unbearable for most dragons. But right now, I'd do anything to be in such warmth.
I feel a sudden pang of guilt and realize that I'm sitting here complaining over weather while Glory could be being tortured or in some worse condition than myself, for all I know.
It's getting dark out. It's probably early evening, but the stormy weather is making it seem later than it actually is.
"Guys," someone calls out. I realize it's Starflight. "Can we take a break?" He stops running, panting.
Starflight never had good stamina. While there wasn't much room to run around in the claustrophobic, limited caves we grew up in, he never even tried to work out and get muscular, instead spending his time studying and reading.
Which is very unlike Tsunami, who could probably run for at least an hour longer than Starflight, having spent most of her time in the caves swimming in the river and trying her hardest to beat Kestrel in battle training.
As much as I want to get to the Rainforest Kingdom and find Glory as soon as possible, I don't object. I'm pretty tired too, and nearly out of breath.
Clay stops too. "Alright. Yeah, let's take a break. I'm gonna go look for a snack." He runs off into the trees, which are hanging with colorful fruit.
Tsunami stops running too, seeming to have realized that everyone else is resting briefly. She apparently didn't notice Clay run off. "Where's Clay?"
"Getting a snack," I say. Tsunami rolls her eyes. That was Clay, always looking for something to eat.
"Many of the 'snacks' here may not be edible, depending on what he's looking for," Starflight points out.
"Probably a fruit or something," I say.
"I sure hope not," Tsunami says.
"Yes, I wouldn't advise looking for fruit. We don't know what's poisonous and what's not here," Starflight says.
"That's not what I meant. I just think he should be looking for something more substantial."
"Fruits can be plenty substantial!" I argue. Being a tiny dragon who only eats a lizard or so a day, I would think so, but the bigger ones like Clay and Tsunami want real meat for a meal.
"They can be, if you have enough of them and if you're craving them," Tsunami says. "I'm currently craving…a monkey. I'm gonna go find one, if you don't mind."
"No!" I protest, clinging to her tail. "The monkeys here are cute! Don't kill one, please! Clay will be back here with some food shortly."
"Fine," she says, trying to wriggle her tail from my grasp. "How do you know Clay isn't hunting for a monkey or some other animal right now?"
"I mean, Clay wouldn't do that, right?"
"Oh, I bet he would, especially if he's hungry. Now let go of my tail," Tsunami growls.
I let go. Starflight is staring at the ground, picking at one of his claws. I can tell when he's deep in thought because he always has the blankest of expressions pinpointed on the most boring of things such as the ground and picks at something, whether it's his food or a stone or his own claws.
"Whatcha thinkin' about?" I ask, trodding over to him. He shakes his head, startled, as if he's trying to rattle all his thoughts off, and looks at me with those soft eyes so black, you can see your reflection.
"Oh, nothing." He chuckles. Then his face changes into an expression that seems to show that he's considering telling me something. "What–what do you think we'll find in the Rainforest Kingdom?"
I shrug, not really knowing where this is going.
"I mean," he continues, "do you think they'll help us? Help us find Glory?"
"Ahhh, so that's what you're thinking about," I say. "Trust me, I'm worried about her too. But there isn't anything we can do until we devise a proper plan. I'm sure the RainWings will help us. It's one of their dragons."
"I don't know. RainWings aren't known for being helpful, you know."
"And how would you know that? We barely got any scrolls on the RainWings when we were stuck in the caves. And you only think that because Kestrel always called Glory a 'lazy RainWing'. I'm sure that's not true."
"Yeah, you're right," Starflight agrees, but he doesn't seem convinced.
"Look, Starflight, I'm sure they'll help us, or at least try. And if they don't, well, we'll get Glory back one way or another."
"Yeah, you're right." He sighs and resumes picking at his claw, which he had paused while speaking with me.
"We should get going," Tsunami says. "It's getting even darker and from what I can see, if we don't get moving we'll practically be treading through water."
"Where's Clay?" I ask, suddenly worried. "Don't tell me he was captured too!"
"I'm right here!" a voice shouts through the thick of the shrubs. Clay stumbles out, carrying an assortment of fruits and small mammals. He was currently stuffing himself.
"Hey, I'm hungry too!" Tsunami exclaims, snatching what looked like a lizard from him.
I grab a mango and began peeling it.
"We can eat on the way, but we should really get going," Starflight says, grabbing a papaya.
The four of us snack as we walk–well, more like run–through the rain, trying as best as we can to keep our food dry. Of course we're unsuccessful. The rain, however, does subside, and I see that it's not as dark as we thought.
About half a mile into walking, the leaves on the tree to my left move, although no wind or anything provoked such a motion. I stare at it, but nothing is there.
Then, on my other side, the air ripples, and I realize something. But I wait to confirm it.
Watching my surroundings carefully, I see another ripple of air and some artificial movements in nature. That's when I confirm my suspicions. RainWings. RainWings are all around us, but they're invisible.
That means we're getting closer to their kingdom.
I then see another ripple on my left. This time, however, I lean towards the left and whisper. "Psst."
The RainWing jumps. Or I think it jumps because a sudden drift of wind blows my direction and the ripple distorts. Then the RainWing recovers after a couple of seconds. "Who are you?"
The question surprises me. Shouldn't everyone in Pyrrhia know who we are? But then I realize we may not look like ourselves, all covered in mud and soaking wet.
"That doesn't matter right now, but–" I'm cut off by the RainWing.
"Wait, are you intruders?" the RainWing asks.
Gosh, this RainWing is stupid. Who asks that kind of question? I think, but shake it off. He might just be one of those care-free dragons.
"No, but we need your help."
"My help?"
"Well, your entire tribe's help, to be more specific."
"Why?"
"You'll understand later, but first, I need to know where your kingdom is."
"Um, okay. About a quarter mile ahead, you should run into some huts. That's our village."
"And that's your kingdom?"
"Yes."
"Great, thanks." I catch up with the others, who I've seemed to have fallen behind quite a bit. "Guys. I just met a RainWing."
"A RainWing? Where?" Tsunami asks.
"They're invisible. You can't see them. But they're all around us."
"Fascinating," Starflight breathes, clearly the most intrigued.
"Were they suspicious of us?" Tsunami asks.
"Not in the least."
Tsunami looks skeptical. "Are we sure these dragons are the right ones to go to?"
"We can't turn back now," I say. "Oh, and the kingdom is about a quarter mile ahead. Let's just keep going. We'll be there soon."
After a little less than a quarter mile, a dense wall of tree leaves and shrubs blocks our way. We stop.
Then suddenly, to my left, I hear a voice. It's the same voice of the RainWing I met earlier. "Hello, again," he says, still invisible.
I flinch slightly, then reply. "Hi. So, how do we get past this shrub wall?"
"Oh, you can't. I mean, you can, but that's kinda sorta our defense system. Here, come with me, there's another way around."
"Wait, I can't even see you. How am I supposed to follow you?"
"Oh, right." The RainWing chuckles. Slowly and beautifully, he reveals himself. The air ripples and colors of all sorts take the place of what seemed like air. He's magnificent, even more so when the sun glints off his scales. I've only ever seen Glory do this, and I thought she was stunning. But he's a whole new level of dazzling. He's mostly a joyful orange and yellow mix with shifting blue spirals and gradient wing webs. He has a goofy smile with sharp white teeth and soft green eyes.
He's very attractive and must not be too much older than us, maybe a year older.
"Now you can follow me." So we do. I'm in the lead of the other three, following the colorful joyful RainWing.
We come to a spot that's much less dense but there's still a curtain of long leaves covering the entrance.
"Right past here is the RainWing Kingdom. Ready to see?"
"Yes." I nod. "Wait, before we do, I never got your name."
He grins. "My name's Parrot. Yours?"
"Sunny. And this is Tsunami, Clay, and Starflight."
"Nice to meet you," Parrot says, smiling. Gosh, he smiles a lot. "Just to warn you," Parrot starts, "That the other RainWings may not be quite as welcoming as I was."
"Are they violent?"
Parrot snorts. "Violent? No, no, no, not that kind of unwelcoming. They just might not be as comfortable with having strangers in their kingdom as I was."
"So, what will they do to us?" I ask.
"At the most, shoot you with our tranquilizer darts. But I doubt that. And if they try, I'll try and give them reason not to. Everyone in the village likes me. Don't worry."
"Okay," I agree. I'm feeling slightly nervous but not scared to enter a foreign kingdom. RainWings are obviously not violent dragons, unlike SkyWings.
With that, Parrot pushes aside the leaf curtains and walks inside the village. I follow, and so do Clay, Tsunami, and Starflight.
The sudden bright light of the village is blinding compared to the dense forest, which seemed very dark with all the trees blocking the sunlight.
I open my eyes to a bright colorful village full of life. RainWings are flying through treetops and picking fruit and eating and sleeping. Sloths are everywhere, but no one seems to be eating them. I'm amazed by the Rainforest Kingdom's beauty.
I glance back at the others, who also seem mesmerized by this wonderful sight.
One by one, RainWings begin to stop what they're doing and stare at us, perplexed and curious.
I make eye contact with a few of them. They're all different colors, each so beautiful and unique.
I take a deep breath. Now that we've arrived, the next step is to convince them to help us rescue Glory.
Okay, guys, that was chapter 5. Sorry it's a bit of a longer chapter. I just had so much to write. Anyway, as I asked in the beginning, should I keep doing POV? Because I love doing POV but I wonder what you guys would like. Just normal third-person or first-person? Also, if I continue POV, the chapters will go in the POV order: Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, Sunny. But I might change it up. Especially if I want to tell the story from Glory's perspective because she's in a whole different setting than the rest. But anyway, hope you enjoyed the chapter. Again, reviews are encouraged about my questions or just anything in general. Please. I've not been getting any reviews lately, and I'm really begging you guys. If you do and you have a username, I'll shout you out. Thanks for considering and thanks again for reading.
See ya in the next one.
Ducky :)
