Jack stopped in front of a two-story building with a minimalist design and his smile slowly formed. He took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, this would be the beginning for him to let go of the past.
He entered the building and climbed the stairs that would lead him to a room devoted to his one best buddy, someone who would probably scold him for leaving without saying goodbye and not giving him any news except, I am going to Italy, three years ago.
He chuckled as he reached the doorway only to find Kristoff, his best buddy, scolding someone on the phone. He waited for him to finish before finally deciding to announce his presence by knocking on the door.
Kristoff looked up and looked frozen for a moment. Jack imagined like Kristoff was having a brain freeze and that made him smirked.
"You! Who's your name again?!" Kristoff stood up and pointed at Jack, his brain slowly processing the arrival of his friend who he really wanted to give a piece of his mind to.
"Have you eaten, Kristoff?" Jack asked casually.
Kristoff gasped at that. "Are you serious that's what you just asked? You asked that as if we just parted yesterday."
Jack just laughed and then turned around. "I'm starving. Come on, buy me lunch."
Kristoff huriedly followed Jack and a few minutes later they both were already on a local restaurant enjoying lunch.
"This is heavenly." Kristoff shoved a mouthful of pasta into his mouth and chewed eagerly. Even though he looked busy with his food, he secretly observed his friend who, although he looked much better than the last time he saw him, there was still something that made him look gloomy. Not always visible, but he knew it was there.
"How does it feel to be back after three years. Do you think the city has changed a lot?" Kristoff asked.
Jack offered his best smile. "The mowen are pretier."
Kristoff stopped chewing and tapped the table with a little bit of force. "Look at you, Jack. A smooth talker now, eh? They're sure catching your eyes, I see. Did you call your mother?"
"Later." Came a short answer from Jack.
"She doesn't know you're back from Itally?"
Jack shook his head. "I'll call her when I'm settled."
"What did you do in there?"
"I quit photography."
Kristoff stopped chewing again and stared at Jack a few second. All he knew was that photography was something Jack really loved, back when he was with Evelyn. This made him curious.
"Did you hook up with a girl?" He knows that this question might make Jack uncomfortable but he felt the need to ask the question.
Jack looked up from his food and sighed. "No. I didn't. I can't. Not until I find someone like Evelyn again."
Kristoff looked at his friend sadly. He knew how deep Jack's love to Evelyn was but he really wanted Jack to move on.
"Then what were you doing for the past three years?"
Jack just stared at him emotionless untill finally he cracked a laugh. "Just busy breathing. Now eat your food, Kristoff."
It was a cue to drop the conversation down. Kristoff understood that and tried to change the topic, mostly about his job as an architect. And from that, they both agreed for Jack to work with him as an interior designer.
"You look really tired. Are you sure you're not pushing your self too hard?" Reynold asked as he and Elsa were walking by the seashore later that evening.
"Can you not to worry about me for just a moment?" Elsa tightened her grip on Reynold's arm, looked up and smiled broadly.
Reynold only took a slight glance because he knew he wouldn't be able to stand the sight of that adorable smile. "How can I not to worry about you? What if you collapse or something because you push your self too hard. Anna told me how passionately you've been working and, well, your plans to go to the mountain tomorrow."
Elsa pursed her lips and sighed, staring at the stretch of white sand in front of her. "Off course she told you about that, after you gave her a box full of Italian Chocolate." She wishpered, more to herslef than to Reynold. But then she looked up again and tugged Reynold's arm.
"I'm telling you, Rey. I'm really strong now. You want me to prove it? Try to catch me!" And the next second Elsa was already running away, leaving Reynold who for a split second was dumbfounded by what had just happened.
Reynold just chuckled and immediately ran to catch up with Elsa who was running fast. He tried to run as fast as possible so that Elsa would not have to run too long when he caught up with her. And it was only a few seconds until he was able to grab Elsa by the waist and make her stop running. Both burst into laughter.
"Alright, alright. Point taken. You are really strong now. No need to prove me anything." Reynold said when they both catched their breath after laughing so hard.
"Then get rid of your worried face whenever you see me. I'm really fine now." Elsa said sitting on a pile of rocks not far from where they were standing now. Reynold followed and sat beside her.
They both fell in a comfortable silent for a while, eyes far away to the sea which twinkles because of the moonlight that fell on the surging water surface.
"That man... " Elsa said suddenly. "I wonder what he was like."
Reynold turned his head and titled his head not understand about who was the man Elsa was talking about.
"The man that gave me his heart." Said Elsa explaining. She saw the change in Reynold emotion and then sighed. "You don't like to talk about this, do you?"
"No, I don't." Reynold answered quickly. Eyes were on the sea again. "And we still don't know whether it was a he or she. It was only an anonymous."
"I know." Elsa breathed. She looked down, but her mind was still racing. "But somehow I think it was a he. I don't know about you but I'm so curious what he was like."
Reynold tried to understand. He gave Elsa a small smile and his full attention. "Why be so curious?"
"Sometimes... I feel like two people are living inside me. You know, since the surgery, my personality has changed,"
"Elsa," Reynold cut off gently. "You are the same person you are. A transplant doesn't change a person. You're still the same Elsa Winters I fell for." He put his arm around Elsa's shoulders and pulled her closer. Her head rested on his shoulder.
"Don't dwell on it anymore." He added softly. "You are the keeper of the heart now. Just be thankful to him."
It was a signal from Reynold that they should not talk about it anymore and Elsa only let out a long sigh before finally nodding in response.
"I didn't get you a present. Aren't you upset about that?" Reynold slightly pulled away from the side hug and stared at Elsa fondly.
"You don't have to give me a present everytime you get back from Italy. You gave Anna those chocolate and that means, that you've saved me from her ranting about her weird craving of chocolate. Besides, you are here. It's the greatest gift of all." Elsa said, smiling.
Elsa's answer made Reynold smile. He then cleared his throat and released his hug. "Then I hope my effort hasn't been wasted."
He pulled something out from his pocket and showed it in front of Elsa. It was a small, fancy-luxury black box. Like a jewelry box. Elsa didn't have the time to asked what's inside because Rraynol had already opened it, revealing a very beautiful diamond ring. He took the ring and put on Elsa's finger straight away. Elsa was to stunned to react.
"You will marry me, won't you?" He said almost certainly. They had been dating for all the years they knew and he was so confident that Elsa would say yes.
Elsa stared at the ring, and then at the man in front of her. She loved Reynold. There was no doubt about it. She always felt safe and comfortable around him. And she knew that Reynold loved her so, so much. He was so lovely, caring, kind, and never, not even once did Reynold hurt her in any way. It was just that, she was still not sure what kind of love she had for him.
They grew up together, they shared childhood together. Even after the death of both her parents years ago, the Reynolds family took care of her and her sister. She didn't even know what would have happened to her, or to her sister when her heart decided to stop working three years ago. If it wasn't for a miracle that someone gave her his heart, she would surely be dead. She already considered Reynold as her own brother.
But somehow, she couldn't possibly say no. It would probably hurt Reynolds heart.
"I'll answer your question later." Elsa said in a joking tone. She looked at the ring that was now enthroned beautifully on her ring finger. Her heart felt heavy. But she tried to smile.
"What?" Reynold couldn't believe what he just heard. He was so sure that he would get a yes as an answer. His eyes went wide.
"Are you turning me down?" He laughed dryly.
Elsa giggled, trying to find her best answer without hurting anyone feelings. "It would be meaningless if I answered it right away. Give me some times."
Reynold was laughing now but he understood what Elsa meant by that. He pinched Elsa's cheek and smiled down at her. "Okay. But don't make me wait to long. I love you so much, you know that?"
"I know." Elsa smiled but this time didn't reach her eyes.
And without Elsa's knowledge, Reynold texted one of his men to find information about the person who had given his heart to Elsa. He didn't like it when something disturbed Elsa's mind. As much as possible he would make Elsa's mind at ease and make sure she was always happy.
"Jaaaaack!"
Jack heard Evelyn's voice again for the first time in three years. He was sitting on the couch in his old apartment and for some reason he wanted to see some of the videos of him and Evelyn. What he was seeing now was when the two of them were on a mountain and Evelyn was trying to shout his name to the expanse of the surrounding hills.
"Evelyn." He heard his own voice calling.
"What?" Evelyn turned around and now was looking at the camera. At him.
"Come here and shout that again."
Evelyn complied and walked cheerfully to him. "Jaaacckk! I love youuuu!"
"I love you tooo." He whispered to the camera more than to her, making her explode with laughter.
Jack heard his own voice from the video and chuckled sadly. The video ended there and he was back in the darkness of his living room, his tears flowed slowly.
"Anna, come on! We're gonna be late!"
Elsa put her essentials into her backpack, she was already prepared in a white t-shirt covered with a flannel shirt and pants, ready to go. But the problem was that Anna, her sister was still lying on the bed in the room next to hers. She half-heartedly agreed to accompany Elsa to go to the mountains.
"Anna!" Elsa was now already in Anna's room, tugging her arm out of the bed. But Anna did not budge.
"Anna, we're sure gonna be late. You know the sun sets faster on the mountain, right? Come on, get up, sis."
Anna rolled over and looked at her sister pleadingly. "Elsa, you work with flowers all day long. Aren't you sick of it? Why do you have to take pictures of wild flowers from the mountain anyway? But the wild folwers aren't even the issue here. I'll sweat like a pig and my make up will run under the sun, Elsa!" She said dramatically.
"Should I go alone?" Elsa had no other choice since Anna was acting moody. She put her hands on her hips and titled her head slightly.
Anna's head snapped hearing that. She sat up right and hugged her blanket. "I can't let you do that. How will I face Rey-rey if something happens to you. He did bribe me with those chocolate after all." She lowered her stare and her eyes fell on the ring on Elsa's finger. She gasped, her eyes almost popped out of thier sockets.
"What do you have over here?! Is my sister going to be Mrs. Williams soon?!" Anna grabbed Elsa's hand and examined the ring.
Elsa didn't know what to answer. Even Anna didn't know about her true feelings towars Reynolds. Everyone that close to her believed that they both love each other.
"It's a fate maybe. You've been with him for as long as I can remember. It's about time for him to ask you to marry him. You know what, Elsa? If love is fated to be, your heart will race and pound even with the slightest touch. Don't you think so?" Anna said dreamily, unaware of the effect her words had on her sister.
Elsa couldn't answer that, since her mind was drifted to a strange incident at the airport yesterday. The moment when her heart suddenly beat at an odd speed. Now when she recalled the incident carefully, her's shoulders and the other person's shoulders were brushed a little. And the beat speed was only increasing when she turned around and saw that person's back.
Reynolds never made her heart act like that. Either before or after the transplant.
Clearing her throat, Elsa tried to control her emotion. She silently conviced her self that, I do love Reynold, after everything he had done to her.
"Hurry up and get ready." She told Anna and then went to her room.
"Don't worry, Mrs. Williams-soon-to-be! I won't go to the mountain naked!" Anna yelled, making Elsa gigle and shake her head.
There was a mountain to the north of the city where the forest around it was a conservation area. There were hiking trails that mountain hikers used to pass and in the area around the entrance to the conservation forest there was an inn complete with several restaurant facilities. So it was fairly safe for the two of them to come here, as long as of course, they didn't get lost when the night falls.
And after about two hours drive, the two of them arrived at the forest entrance parking area. Elsa only brought one backpack because she didn't have any plans to stay overnight, she was just going to take some pictures of wildflowers and then head home. Lately she's had a slightly odd fascination with activities in the wild. She liked to breath in the fresh air.
"This is really a hard work, Elsa." Anna whined, taking out her sunblock cream from her bag. "If I didn't put on my sunscreen, I would get a bad sunburnt."
Elsa just sighed and continued to walk towards the entrance. She couldn't argue with the moody Anna, she would always lose. It took only less than an hour of walk when Anna said that she was tired.
"Let's take a break, Elsa." Said Anna, out of breath. She had kept her hands on her knees as she walked. She should increase her cardio training, really.
Elsa who was already walking ahead had to stop and turn around. She waited for Anna to catch up with her. "Already? We still have to go all the way to the top, Anna. You can't get tired on me now."
"I know that, Elsa." Anna scratched her neck that was starting to sweat.
"If you are tired, you can wait for me at the inn." Elsa said, moving her legs to walk again. Anna slowly followed behind her.
"No, I can't do that." Anna said, holding her camera tightly. She found new determination to keep going. "I have to finish my collection."
"Collection?" Elsa asked confused, but Anna only grinned and somehow walked faster than her now.
"It's my private collection, Elsa. You don't need to know."
And Elsa's confusion was answered when she was busy taking pictures of some wild flowers and matching them with the thick book she was carrying, while Anna, she actually pointed her camera at the hiking trail where several handsome hikers passed. Elsa just chuckled seeing that and went back to being serious with wild flowers in front of her.
Elsa was so carried away by her activities that she didn't realize that she was already far from the hiking trail. She looked around and found Anna nowhere, and most likely she was on the hunt for a handsome hiker. She smiled at thought. Anna would still be Anna.
After a few moments, she began to feel something was wrong when she heard foot steps behind her. She straightened her back and out of the corner of her eye, she saw the shadow of a person sneaking up on her from behind.
"Don't move."
A deep, low voice said and it made her heart beat a little faster, though she obeyed the voice not to move.
"Don't look back, stay still." The voice ordered again.
And that was when Elsa slowly heard a buzz, like the buzz of a bee. She tried not to move and she even subconsciously held her breath. She closed her eyes in anticipation.
And when she heard a whisk sound behind her, the buzz disappeared. She opened her eyes but somehow her heart wouldn't stop racing.
"It's okay now." The voice said, not so deep and low like before.
And because Elsa was curious about who it was, she turned around and her heart was not only beating fast, it was racing. She let out a silent gasp.
"Were you scared?" The man asked, turning around slightly to shake the hat he had evidently just used to keep the bee away.
Elsa recognized that back, that silvery white hair. The man was wearing a white sleeveless shirt, dark brown pants and a bandanna around his head. He was carrying a backpack that seemed to be completely filled with various climbing needs. It was the man she saw at the airport yesterday.
"There are bound to be beehives with cedar trees around." The man said again, he gave Elsa a small smile.
Bu still, Elsa couldn't say anything. She was busy trying to comprehend what she was seeing and feeling.
The man, who at first acted normal, became a little confused when he saw Elsa who seemed speechless. He chuckled and then looked at Elsa as if to tease her.
"I just saved your life, Miss. Shouldn't you be thanking me?" He asked, his words filled with humour. Elsa's face with that kind of expression he thought was a little adorable.
Hearing that, Elsa came back to her senses. The man had indeed chased away the bee that had flown towards her earlier. He had indeed saved her life. She guessed.
"Oh, yes. I-i'm sorry and thank you for that. I really appreciate it." Said Elsa, nodding her head.
The man nodded as well. "Are you here alone?"
"Uh," Elsa looked around her. She gulped when she realized that she didn't even know where she was now. Oh, and Anna? "I'm with my sister. But she must be around somewhere."
"Really?" The man looked around as well. "I didn't see anyone around here." He then turned to look at Elsa. He seemed to concern about something.
"You should tell your sister to be careful. It's easy to get lost in the woods, especialy when the dark comes. Excuse me." And with that, the man bid Elsa goodbye. He walked to continue on without giving Elsa a second glance.
Elsa kept watching the man's back as he walked away. Her heart was still beating fast and erratic to the point it made her feel dizzy. She clutched her chest and let out a shaky breath.
"What is wrong with my heart? It's still working, isn't it?" She whispered to herself.
Jack was still smiling to himself moments after leaving the woman he had just helped. Her face was so innocent and looked like she had just seen a ghost or something. He just chased away a bee around her and yet, she looked so scared she couldn't even speak.
But to think about that again, he felt familiar with that woman. It wasn't that he had known her before, but her existence that made him feel like he had known her before. How could that happen, he had no idea.
He decided not to think about it and continued climbing. He went to places he had been with Evelyn. Until finally he reached the highest hill he had ever reached with her.
He stood looking around, at the green that stretched wide below him. His hands on his waist and he let the sweat drip down his body as he climbed nonstop without rest. He took several deep breaths to calm himself before finally screaming Evelyn's name at the top of his lungs.
His coming to this mountain was an attempt to come to terms with reality. He knew the memories would flood him back but sometimes we had to face the fear to get through it. And he hoped that after today, his heart could truly find peace and he was ready to move on.
He then looked at the watch on his wrist and considering the sun's current position, he felt he still had a few hours until sunset. So, he decided to sit here and rest.
Elsa gulped hard and looked around for the umpteenth time. It was already dark around her but she still couldn't find the hiking trail. She felt she had been walking in circles since an hour ago.
"I'm too smart to get lost. As long as I have my wits, I'll be fine. Yes, I'm sure I'll be fine." She just kept muttering to herself. She tried not to panic but the forest getting darker and the wind blowing like it was carrying the smell of rain made her nervous.
She squinted as she seemed to see a clear grass-free path not too far in front of her. Maybe it was the hiking trail she was looking about. She didn't want to get too excited yet because maybe it was nothing, but she still walked closer towards it.
She was too focused on the path that she didn't pay much attention to where her feet were going, what she stepped on, until she accidentally tripped over a tree root and it made her fall. The slope of the forest she was currently in caused her to automatically roll down into the thickets while she could only scream.
"Aaahhh!"
to be continued...
